Grady, David  

Dr. Grady knows his stuff very well. The problem is that he turns his labs into lecture periods. Almost every lab he spent the first hour to hour and a half lecturing. Then you have to rush to complete some of the labs. What is worse is his tests. He requires that you retain pretty much every thing in the lecture even things that are way beyond the level of the class. If you have Dr. Grady be prepared to spend a lot of time taking notes and studying all aspects of them. If possible i would take a different teacher.

Dr. Grady writes difficult but do-able tests but grades very strictly and since most people sleep or daydream during his interesting pre-lab lectures it brings down to curve. So if you get a 70% on the exam or final that is probably going to get you an A/B. Dr. Grady is very approachable and nice during office hours. He shows great enthusiasm for microbiology. The lab is quite fun and if you ask questions and get to know Dr. Grady you will be successful and take home an appreciation for bacteria.

I only had Dr. Grady for lab, but I thought he did a good job. He would ramble on for about an hour at the beginning of lab, but he was very helpful during the lab. The lab quizzes were hard, but mostly fair. His favorite questions are matching from a large word bank; it's hard though because you can use the terms more than once and he takes off 1/2 point for wrong answers. Most people finished 30 minutes to an hour early, depending on the lab. The best part is you don't have to turn in a notebook, just two reports (easy points, just follow the directions and make it look pretty). I would take him again.

Dr. Grady is a really smart man, but he was terrible for this class. He taught the section on immunology. His lectures were extremely in-depth, much more so than they should have been for a class that did not have any immunology as a prerequisite. He lectured over just about all of our heads every class because he didn't start with the basics, he just dove right in to really specific details of the immune system. I studied really hard for his test, and felt ready because I could describe the processes we learned about, but his test was mostly really detailed facts...I didn't feel like I could have been prepared for it even if I had another week to study for it. I think the average was in the 50's. The class is worth taking, but his section makes you regret ever signing up for it. My advice...suffer through his section and take the class.

Dr. Grady is a very inteligent person and I'm sure that he knows his MCRO. But, as far as explaining the material to others, and noticing student's difficulties, he is clueless. He cannot bring himself down to the sutdent's understanding level and try to see the infomation from their point of view. His tests are extremely hard, and unless you've been a microbiologist for a while, scoring good on the tests is difficult. He is not fair and taking the class with him would be a great challenge. If I were you, I would take the class with someone different and if the class isn't tought by any other, just wait till next time.

Dr. Grady is Incapable of presenting material clearly. His lectures are extremely disjointed and give the impression that he's just telling us whatever happens to pop into his head at that moment. His tests are near immposible, with class averages around 50%, It's been so long since he's had to learn this stuff that he seems to be unable to recognize its difficulty. The only saving grace is the massive amount of extra credit available in the lab, which make up for the horrible test scores. He also has a very cruel sense of humor, where you'll never know if you're getting a straight answer because he gives wrong answers as a joke if he thinks it's a stupid question. Worst of all, he doesn't seem to want to improve, his was the only class this quarter where we didn't get to take student evealuations. If it's possible to take a different teacher, do it. If he's the only one who teaches a class required for you major, like medical microbiology, consider changing majors rather than taking his class.

Dr. Grady is truely something else. He knows sooo much and will try and teach you everything. He is a difficult instructor because he goes off on tangents and you wonder if what he's saying will be test material. To be safe yeah it will. Lab is a HUGE deal to him especially in med mcro it can make you or break you. He gives you so many chances for extra credit its crazy take every chance you get. This class is the best I've taken at poly. He provides old exams and quizes which are very similar to what you will get. He's great at emailing you back if you have questions, and provides a weekly update of your grade. I can understand why some people don't like his style of teaching since it requires you to actually understand what and why you're doing something not just memorizing it. Yeah he docks points in lab for putting pens in your mouth, not usisng aseptic techniques but you have to remember that many of the organisms you're working with are opportunistic pathogens. He's very helpful during office hours and is always willing to keep lab open longer or to open it for you at other hours. So yeah that means that lab usually requires a lot more time out of class but if you enjoy the class you really don't mind it. He has a pretty decent curve. Best advice take good notes and study them use book only as reference he tests only on notes don't be shy go talk to him during office hours.

For those of you who thought Dr. Grady was a poor instructor or his lectures too boring and tests too difficult, you need to rethink why you were in his class, this major or this college. He expected a lot, but was also willing to give a lot, if you were prepared and enthusiastic. His graduated students were far better prepared for careers in Microbiology or as Clinical Laboratory Scientists than students from other universities.

Immunology and Serology is a very challenging class, do not take it if you are not interested in it. Dr. Grady is not an easy teacher, but he is knowledgable and friendly and will help you out with the material if you ask him in lab or office hours. The lab is harder than lecture, and that is where all of the midterms are given. Be prepared to come into lab to check results or do an additional step on days when you do not have lab. However, the lab is also one of the most interesting I have had and doing procedures like the anti-nuclear antibody test makes you feel like a real scientist. Do not miss lab, as you can't make up some of them, but it's okay to miss lecture now and then, but make sure you get the handouts. Lecture was a little over most students heads, but occasionally you would learn an interesting obsure fact. He focused a LOT on the immune system and also blood types and transfusion reactions. Work hard in the lab and on the reports, they are just a simple sheet from the lab book, but your results need to be correct to receive full credit, towards the end with the blood testing. Also, the supplemental books he gives out in lab, are just that, supplemental, use them for reference and nothing more. Try to get ahold of old tests if you can, although he does not test exactly the same material, the format is the same. Still, there are some curve balls, I remember on one test we had to draw the Ig-A antibody totally from memory and label the parts and it was worth about 25% of the test. Most people did bad on the final, but he does curve the overall grades. I think most people got Bs and Cs, a few As and maybe one or two Ds and Fs (also, some people dropped). There is an opportunity for extra credit with a research paper. Overall a good class, but don't take it if you would have more than one other heavy science class, or two if you don't need to sleep.

As a microbiology major I had Dr. Grady for many classes. I had him for intro to micro, medical micro, immunology & serology, hematology, and others I am sure. I found him to be an excellent teacher. He is hard, and his tests are flat out hard, but doable. I thought he was extremely interesting and very challenging. I guess I chose the right major for me because I was never bored with the subject matter and loved his in depth explanations on things that were perhaps over the heads of a lot of people in class who were just space fillers in my opinion. If you are looking for an easy A, this isn't the teacher for you. If you are looking for a good understanding of your subject with a challenge, then take him by all means. He is very approachable and offers lots of help and genuinely cares about your success. He won't approach you about problems you are having, you must approach him. Overall, one of the best and most enjoyable teachers I have ever had. Thanks Dr. G!!
