Being his first time teaching, he did a very good job at preparing us for the final. He's a bit of an easy grader when it comes to the midterms. Gives lots of partial credit. Gave out quizzes but graded them as homework problems, so it didn't hurt you too much. For our term project, we created our own statics problem and had a partner in class to solve it. It wasn't too hard to create nor was it harshly graded. Overall, I actually enjoyed the class.

Deuel made classtime go by fast because he made his lectures interesting and to the point. I appreciate that he lectured rather than making us read from the book. He then gave us a problem to work with in groups which helped me understand more. He always tries to understand our questions. He gives a lot of homework but it gave me good practice.

Deuel was my favorite professor I have ever had at Cal Poly! He never made some feel stupid for not knowing something simple and he never assumed you knew something. He explained material clearly and homework really helped. My only negative and I mean negative, was I end up with an 85 in the class and on the common final and was curved down to a C plus. This broke my heart to get an 85 on the common and get curved down. So just be careful if you sitting at a 75 that is not a C!!

So I had Duele for 212, and I feel as if I did not learn a fair amount of dynamics. While he would be a great study session leader, I personally don't think he is cut out to be a teacher yet (he is nearly our age, around 23-25 yr old!). While he did keep us interested and made class go by quickly because he is so quirky, all of us felt as if we weren't really learning as much when compared to the other classes. Average on the midterm was a 57%, but it was heavily curved. Grade was distributed among a wide array of areas, and he uses the same syllabus as Cooper. He did probably learn a lot on how to go about 212 next time, but I'd stay away for a while.

I agree with the post below. I felt as if I did not learn much from his class. The terms project did take up a chunk of our grade and was kind of useless. We basically had to create our own dynamics problems and it took up the time we could have used doing more example problems. The terms project most likely hurt our grade more than help it since he was really picky about how it should look like. Students got -5 points off just for not putting the papers in a specific binder he wanted. Deuel was extremely picky about the homework. It was more important to align everything in one column, use a ruler, and put one equal sign per line, than it was to solve the problem correctly. There were hardly any examples in the class. Deuel would go over the formulas and then have us figure out one problem for the rest of the class. Sometimes, he wouldn’t even go over the problems and would just give us the answer. It was expected that we finish the problem at home. Deuel liked to give out pop quizzes. Most of the pop quizzes were just the conceptual problems that came out of the book. During the first half of the class, we only had one official quiz total. It wasn’t until he realized that the average of the midterm was so low that he began to give us more quizzes. We had about three more quizzes after the midterm. Deuel also had a couple of labs incorporated into his class. I thought it was unnecessary that they took up the whole class period. This class was actually not an easy A. He has a bell curve system and I just found myself to be lucky to be on the higher end. The Final was a bit challenging and I felt unprepared. On the other hand, Deuel is a nice professor and this is his first time teaching Dynamics, so he might improve more as time passes by.

Coming into this class, I thought Deuhl would be fairly understanding since he went to Poly and is really young, but he was exactly the opposite. Since he's a new, young professor, he has to prove that he's got rules and whatnot. He had no sympathy on us. Yes, he was really funny and quirky, but every time I asked him a question outside of class he was really condescending. I even went to his office hours multiple times. His first study session was completely pointless, but he learned by the final. There's only one midterm btw. That's how I got screwed over because I didn't do well on it. Most professors have a high average for their projects, his was at least 10% lower than their averages. Also, the project is the dumbest thing I've ever done at Cal Poly. He was so nit picky on format. It had to look like it was being sent to a publishing company...how many Cal Poly engineers go to work for a publishing company? He's not a bad teacher, I just think he has no sympathy right now and isn't quite sure what is the best approach when teaching. I'm sure in a few years when he takes things less personally, he'll be a good professor.
