Greenwald is does a great job of presenting the material. He answers all questions very clearly. His tests only consist of questions from the book, and are curved. I would reccomend him to you. P.S. If your reading these evaluations, hopefully you're submitting a few yourself. You should put in at least as much as you get out.

He presented material well in class but he was very monotone. Reminded me of Ben Stein in Ferris Buehler's Day off.

I only had him for a sub for a week and he taught me more that week than I learned the whole quarter! It became so simple that I felt good about my math skills for the first time in my life. His lectures are not dull but quite entertaining. He tends to pace around the room and use random comments but it keeps your attention, especially when he brakes some chalk. I know I wasn't the only one that liked him. When he left at the end of the week everyone shook his hand and thanked him for filling in. Many of us wrote down his name and inquired what classes he taught so that we could be in his class again. Definately take him!

Professor G.- I would have to say he was a very good teacher of mathematics and his only weakness is his intense pace when he is presenting or reviewing material, it is hard to keep one's notes organized enough for easy review. His tests are difficult to say the least, but if you want to do well in his class you must do the homework he assigns first thing when you get it and before all other homework - this helped me remember what I did on the homework better, and thus helped me on my tests. And if there is ever anything unclear in the homework or lecture go to his office hours, they are extreemely helpful. Besides all this Professor G. is a very nice person. So you can chat with him if you like, he will listen.

I personally loved Dr. Greenwald. He may seem kind of odd but once you get to know him he is funny and he really loves what he does. He is very good about letting you know what you will be doing each week and he explains the concepts very well. I went to his office hours a lot and he loves to have people visit him so do it! He always has a question and answer time at the beginning of every class period. One of the better teachers i have had at cal poly.

He presents material very clearly.... he has a very interesting way of lecturing, so you never really get bored in his class. His tests are pretty difficult but he grades on a curve. He collects homework, but I had an easy grader...hopfully you will be that lucky. He answers ALL!!!....questions on the homework, so you shouldn't get anything less than full credit. I recomend you take his course.

Dr. Greenwald is one of the best prof.s I've ever had. I'm actually a sophomore now, but had to say something about this teacher after the fact. He explains things in a tight, concise manner, and holds your attention (despite his slightly monotone voice; his personality is not). Tests are hard, but if you pay attention you'll know how to ace them. If you make some comment about his appearance (new haircut, shirt, etc.) he'll blush like a tomato too.

Dr. Greenwald I believe is one of the few Dr.'s at CalPoly that actually deserved to receive his PhD. Dr. Greenwald knows math very well and his manner of teaching it is excellent and very helpfull to students. As others have said, he is not an easy instructor, so don't go into this class if you want an easy ride, his final is a bitch!! I received a C in the class because I have to work hard to do good in math, but if you want a good understanding of math, this is the professor to take!!!

Greenwald is as good as it gets. Hes always willing to answer homework questions and wont start the lecture until all the questions are answered. He doesnt give any quizes, your grade is based on three midterms a final and homework. Homework is 10% of your grade and is worth doing. His test are fair, if you have a good understanding of the material you should do fine. If you dont understand the material, greenwald is awesome in office hours, i also recommend taking a math workshop along with the class. If you can get this guy take him!

Dr. Greenwald is an excellent professor! He always takes the time to make sure everyone in the class understands whats going on. He even spent an entire class just answering homework questions from the day before. Great professor, take him if you can.

I thought Greenwald was one of the most decent math teachers I've had since my freshman year in high school. I was one of those students that took Calc AB my senior year of hs and failed the AP test, so I had already seen most of the material that Greenwald taught. He has HW due every tuesday and friday and it is worth 10% of your grade, 3 midterms - each worth 20%, and a final worth 30%. He gives you a really good feel of where you stand in the class and really cares about how well his students do. He presents all the material really clearly in class and his tests are all very fair. He never tries to trick you and all the tests are based off HW so as long as you understand all the HW, you'll be fine on all the tests. I would definitely recommend taking Greenwald for calc 141.

Will go as slow as you need to, very clear, and very gentle grading curve. If you are lucky enough to take his course do. One of the best professors at cal poly.

Greenwald is probably the best math teacher i have ever had! Although extremely monotonous, he thoroughly explains the material over and over again until you understand it. His midterms are based 100% off the homework problems (final was a bitch) and collects homework twice a week. Very helpful in office hours.

Dr. Greenwald is the best professor I've seen at CPSLO so far. He explains everything so well. However, he's very repetitive on the materials, but if you take it as a reinforcement, it will help you a lot! Also, he uses class time very effectively! If you don't get something, you can go to his office at his convenience office hour and ask him until you fully understand! So, if you really want to learn math, take Dr. Greenwald. I greatly recommanded! =D P.S. curve on some tests also.

Greenwald is a great teacher. He sincerely cares about his students and does what he can to help them. In lecture he starts by fielding questions. Once questions have been answered he moves on to new material and gives a thorough explanation of the topic and useful examples. He checks frequently to make sure everyone understands and if you don't he happily explains it till you understand.

Dr. Greenwald is rad. If you're looking for an easy A, look for another teacher. If you want to build a good foundation in calculus (which will more than prepare you for 143) pay attention to Dr. Greenwald's lectures. He'll do homework problems on the board, and he is very approachable during office hours. Don't get discouraged... I had a B- going into the final and was able to pull and A simply because I decided to study. Do yourself a favor and memorize as many of the basic integrals as you can because his tests are tricky and oftentimes call upon random properties/equations. His tests have an enormous curve, so try to do as well as you can on the first two midterms. Dr. Greenwald is the best calc teacher I've seen at Poly.

Dr.Greenwald is an excellent teacher but he goes through material to fast and he writes really messy. He is willing to help during office hours. There are no quizzes and homework is collected regularly. The tests are unbeliveably hard. If you don't study every single subject than you can't expect to do good. The curve was the only thing that saved my grade.

I've had some the best Math teachers at Poly but this guy tops the chart. He will be a professor you will remember. It seemed like he would go over all of the homework if we were having difficulty with it and he doesn't have a big ego with his PhD. This guy would win my vote for any teaching contest. His final was the hardest math test I have ever had, so be ready for it(or let him get you ready.)

Harvey is the man! He is great lecturer and a very nice guy. He's easy to talk to and makes sure you understant the material. He assigns just the right amount of homework so if you pay attention and do the work everything is fairly easy to understand. His tests are not too hard and all questions come off of the homework. So if you do the homework the tests aren't that bad. I would recomend Greenwald to anyone taking and calc class. I am going to make sure I take him again down the calculus road.

If you want to learn calculus, take his class. Dr. Greenwald is an OUTSTANDING instructor who is passionate about his field. He is extremely helpful in office hours as well. He answers your questions both in and out of class. Make sure you do all the homework problems - each problem is fair game for an exam. The tests do require thinking and applying, so you MUST know all the integrals and derivatives by heart. He is a very intelligent man who is extremely knowledgeable of the material. He is a fair grader, and overall is a nice and helpful guy.

Harvey is a good teacher. Keep up with the homework. He is really friendly in his office hours. I enjoyed this class because I could tell that he enjoyed teaching. I think this is what makes him such a good teacher. I have had two classes with him, and I found him very fair in the way he teaches and grades, and I did learn everything he taught. For the amount of work I put in to the class, I got the grade for. It is as simple as that. It is very possible to get a solid "A" as long as you put the required work(don't worry, its not an insane amount). Thants it.

Greenwald explains concepts well without wasting time. Class is fast paced and full of information. He is more than willing to explain a problem, more than once if necessary.

Excellent teacher. Gives you a basic listing of just about all the homework at the beginning of the quarter, and the workload isn't difficult to manage at all. He quickly goes over concepts, and is more than willing to help students out both during class, and during his office hours. Tests essentially cover what was on the homework, and his grading curve is pretty lenient. On top of that, he's a really nice guy, and easy to get along with. If you ever get a chance to take his course, take it, you'll enjoy it.

Prof. Greenwald was a very great professor to have in my first quarter at Cal Poly. I am pleased to say that he made a very great impression, and has given me hope despite more disagreeable professors teaching here. He is genuinely concerned about his students' learning and does his utmost to help. He is funny and animated, making his lectures more interesting. Tests are not overly hard, although they can be challenging. His grading is very fair when it comes to partial credit. Not too much is taken off if the mistake is small and arithmetic, and at the same time, not too little is taken off for significant mistakes. His office hours are VERY helpful, and he is always eager to help. I highly recommend taking his class if ever possible.

Greenwald is the best. His lectures are split halfway between "recalling" material from last lecture and half with new material. If you happen to miss a lecture, don't worry because you can get it when he "recalls" next time. His test are pretty tough but not if you learn the stuff. One plus is that he curves all the tests (and the final). I got a 73% on one test and still got a B+. Highly recommended for every calc course (142-242). Recommend following his honors system, you'll have him every quarter.

He is a great professor because everything he says is crystal clear. He uses the first 15 minutes of class to go over homework (which is graded!) and the previous lectures, then he teaches the course. There aren't any slides but the way he teaches could NOT be any better!! He explains everything step by step while pacing across the classroom! He also makes the course interesting because he knows everything there is to know about the course (and probably much much more). There are 3 midterms and 1 final, which if you pay attention in class and prepare aren't that hard but not very easy either.

Here is a true 'A' professor. He answers any question imaginable, even if the questions take up more than half the period, and he still has time for an informative, memorable lecture afterward. His little catchphrases are entertaining. You can tell by just looking at that half-done hair and those chalk-covered fingers, he's a true Mathematician. I'm a CPE major, so I'll be taking a lot more math courses, and I hope that I get him again. Greenwald is da man.

This guy is a riot. He is a completely awesome professor. He repeatedly asks how "you're all doin'" to make sure everyone is following. But with his teaching style, it is hard not to follow. Plus in office hours, he'll spend all the time you need. He has a bad pacing habit in front of the black board, but as long as you aren't distracted by excess movement, he is great and with minimal effort you'll do great.

I can hardly believe I am saying this but even though I got a "D" I think he has to be probably the best professor at calpoly. His lectures are so clear that it almost seems too easy. His homework can be a little difficult but not overly. His midterms are hard. On the midterms there are 7-8 questions that are equivalant to the hardest problems in the homework. That is why I got a D because I could hardly pass the tests. He even has a huge curve, his C range is from like 80-60. Overall, if you want to learn something, he is the best. If you want an easy class I would be careful taking him. Enjoy.

I just don't get it. How can a teacher so similar to Ben Stein be so effective? He's amazing! Never in my life have I seen anyone get so pumped up for math. It must be his hardcore pacing that keeps me awake. Whatever he does, it works. Homework isn't bad, and the tests are basically the hardest homework problems. There are no tricks, but you need to know your stuff. Overall, a great, great teacher!

I loved everything about Greenwald but his tests were too goddamn hard. I studied more for this class than my other two classes combined together and I still endeded up with this crappy grade. You better know how to do everything single problem on your Homework and review them like million times. Don't just chill before a test just becuz you think you understood some of the homework. Harvey will destroy your ass on his test.

Proffessor Greenwald is the best math teacher I have ever had. He explains the material very clearly, takes a lot of time to go over homework and answer questions, and curves the grades nicely.

Professor Greenwald is probably one of the most consistent and knowledgeable math teachers I've ever had! With that said, his lectures are always the same and to the point. Being as objective as I can be, his lectures are helpful but go by fast so keep up with the note taking. He tends to have messy handwriting but you'll get used to his notation a week or so into the course. I'm sure you've all heard of his mannerisms in class ("And that's where we are up to the minute", "Any other questions?", "Are we okay so far?", "In the ultimate test of wills, the e^x wins out" etc...) I personally found them hilarious from time to time but people may get annoyed depending on who they are. In all honesty, I enjoyed having Dr. Greenwald for Math 142. He was a genuinely nice guy and is willing to accommodate his students in any way. He even will let you take a midterm on a different day if you have a major test in another class on the same day! Just beware of his exams...I had AP Calculus and even retook Math 141 and got an A in it so I felt good going into this course and got too comfortable. Wrong idea because he'll put those difficult homework problems that are towards the end of the assignment on his exams. Not to say they're not fair because they're on the homework, but don't underestimate how much you study before his exams!

So pretty much I'm not gonna say what everyone else has said already. Everything good I want to say about Greenwald can be found from other reviews...with that said, my only warning to you about him is that he gives you tests that are, on a scale of 1 - 10, a 8 or 9 in difficulty! DO ALL THE HOMEWORK and STUDY HARD (2 or 3 days in advance) or Harvey will destroy your ass on his test! Here's an example of how he'll generate questions for his tests...if you have a homework problem where you have to differeniate something with chain rule, instead of just using chain rule once, you'll have to do it like 2 or 3 times before you reach the answer and the function won't be a conventional one. It'll be something like ln(cosh(sinx)). But don't let that deter you from taking him. I feel like I understand Calculus a lot better now. I only got a C because I underestimated his tests.

Greenwald is a straight up stallion. He is one of the best math teachers I've ever had and totally knows his stuff. He gives three midterms and a comprehensive final. The midterms come at three, six and nine weeks and he always tells you how many problems are on them ahead of time (usually seven and eleven on the final). He always hands tests back right away and with worked out solutions to help you study for the final. He has extra office hours before his tests and is very, very helpful if you go. He is willing to go over material even if you don't have specific questions on homework problems. Each of the test problems directly correlates to a homework problem and his solution sheet tells you which problems. He is very clear and explanitory in his lectures and always gives time to answer homework questions. Whenever asked a question he never stumbles for the answer but solves it straight away. Basically Greenwald just knows his stuff and is an excellent professor that I would recommend to math enthusiasts of ages and abilities.

Greenwald is a straight up beast. He's not just a ballin calc professor, but get this: he was a Marine Nam and was with the 32nd Artillery. He calculated the trajectories of moarter rounds and heavy artillery. What a savage! You better salute Greenwald every day you walk in class you're unamerican. Greenwald is the fucking man!!!

Professor Greenwald is by far the best math professor you could take at Cal Poly. I took him for all my Calculus classes, and he turns an intimidating series of classes into something easy to understand and grasp. He's extremely helpful whenever you ask a question and won't make you feel bad. I couldn't imagine the man yelling or getting mad. If you do the homework and pay attention to and study the lectures (which are clear and filled with great examples), the tests will mirror those almost exactly. Another bonus, he gives partial credit like CRAZY! Whatever you do, if you get stumped, don't leave it blank, because honestly, that's the ONLY way you could get 0 points for that problem. Even if you just write the problem back down onto your work paper, you'll get 1 or 2 points. He's a good teacher, and if you study and do the homework, he'll make Calculus a great experience for you.

What can I say, Greenwald is awesome. clearly displays material, always asks if there are any questions, and spends half the class period or so going over homework. the only thing I would watch out for is his finals, which are always extremely difficult. He puts things on there that you have seen before, but just twists it to look funny. but his midterms are straightforward from the homework, so do the homework, ask questions, and you'll do fine.

Greenwald is an awesome professor. He's one of the few math professors I've heard collect homework, and it helps you stay on track with the material. There are 3 exams, and a final. The exams are usually 6 to 7 problems graded with a lot of partial credit. Don't ever erase anything you write down for a test! I've always felt that I've better understood the material from his teaching style than any other professor. He's great at helping you with anything you may become confused with.

Harvey is a great teacher. He presents the material excellently. Homework is pretty easy. The tests are pretty ridiculously hard though. You better study. Harvey makes calculus interesting and easy to understand. He says some funny stuff. And he's Jewish

There is a reason that he has a high polyrating. He's a good teacher and he's a cool guy. Definitely nerdy. Go to his office hours with questions and he'll really help. Also, he gives a lot of partial credit so write down anything you know on the tests. Also, he loves the word straightforward.

Greenwald is an awesome teacher! His method of explaining tricky topics such as integration ensures that you can clearly understand the material for the exams. Oh, and speaking of exams, make sure you look at the homework because he almost always puts problems similar to hw on tests. He also heavily curves grades on everything except hw, so you can still get an average grade even if you didn\'t do so well on midterms. He is also very helpful and approachable in office hours. Taking his class made me better prepared to do MATH 143!

Prof. Greenwald is a great guy. Calc II is a hard subject for a lot of people and he was very good at explaining the work. He\'s one of the best calc professors out there and the curves in the class are really good. I failed the final and one of the midterms but I still passed the class with a C. So as long as you do your homework and study for the tests, you\'ll be fine. He\'s also extremely helpful in office hours. He\'s also really funny if you\'re actually paying attention in class. If you ever get the chance, take Greenwald.

Excellent teacher. Worth taking if you\'re forced to take calculus. Although I got a D in his class and hate calculus, he made sitting through the stuff tolerable.

Dr. Greenwald is one of the best math professors I\'ve had. He is enthusiastic in his teaching and explains concepts and does examples in an easy to understand way. Make sure to ask him questions whenever you need to because then he does an excellent job in clearing up the concept for you. Overall, just pay attention and ask questions when needed and you\'ll complete the class greatly prepared for 143! I definitely recommend him for anybody who wants to successfully learn Calculus.

THE BEST TEACHER for calculus period! he honestly knows everything, unlike most math teacher that says \"it wont be on the best so dont worry\" when they dont know the answer. Ask questions, and u will the right answer. the thing i like most about him is that he is confident when he goes through a problem. he never has to double check his work, and he is always right. NOTE: weekly homework due, and if you do this part, you will get a high grade because all his tests are very similar to hw questions.

Greenwald is probably one of the best Math teachers I have ever had. He does move rather quickly through the lectures and if you don\'t already know the material you will struggle to keep up the first time. he presents the material. However, he will answer any question and typically spends a third to half of the class answering questions about the homework. He also has a sense of humor that will keep you entertained. He gives a lot of partial credit on his tests and as he himself claims his tests do look a lot like the homework. Generally he will take a homework problem and add something to it to make the answer a little more messy but the method to solve the problem is still the same. Greenwald also realizes that on applications problems if you can set up the calculus correctly you can do the problem so all of the applications problems on tests only ask you to set the problem up. Greenwald is an excellent teacher and it\'s a shame he doesn\'t have a 143 section next quarter.

I thought Greenwald was an above average teacher. He goes very quickly through material and makes his midterms pretty tough. Its almost impossible to fail the class because of his grading scheme.

Greenwald is a very fair professor. In class, he spends the beginning portion of the time answering homework questions, asking at each step whether or not you understand him up to that point; if not, he will provide a thorough explanation which I found really helpful. His lectures and examples were very clear-cut. His tests were all based off of homework problems, and everytime he returns a test back, he provides a key which includes where he got the problem from (problems you've done for homework). His homework policy is easy, twice a week, with a few questions being chosen for correctness. His final consisted of problems that combined several topics you learned over the course of the quarter into one, such as several types of integration in one problem. None of his tests had any word problems except maybe integration regarding the work required to pump up water from a volume, which was rare. There is no curve whatsoever, and I don't believe there is one for the final either. He isn't a unique professor but just a professor that does the course right. I would recommend him to anyone.

'harv' is the shizznit, that fool be hella tight(yeah, i be from nor cal) and be teachin that calculus ish clearly as a crystal. he be gradin fair on this big ass curve so dont trip if you be fuckin up on a test or two, jus dont be makin a habbit of that ish. if i was you, id be doin my homework cuz that fool be havin it graded and that fool be givin it back to yo ass with a red number on the top of yo paper so that y'all can be seein how you be gettin dem problems wrong. don't trip though, cuz if you be slippin', that fool be there to catch yo ass like indiana jones in the temple of doom and shit...he be all fired up to answer all yo questions and even tackle a bunch of them homework problems in class like he was ronnie lott rippin' that fool dan marino in the supa bowl on a saftey blitz to that fool dan's blind side...ouch! get the picture??...cool then...bottom line is that this fool is my dog and i be recomendin' this fool harv to the fullest. so harv, if you readin this, thanks dog, you tight and i gots yo back fo sho...aight? peace then y'all, im out.

best freaking teacher at cal poly, based on step process of how to do problems and gives examples, adn goes over hw in class, can it get better yes it can he not only has the huge C range 0f 60-79 but he also curves on top of that so on average you could get a 55% on the test and still get a C- on the test, hells yes....take him if you ever can

If you can look past the 'Ben Stein' ethos and quotable catch phrases ('Does anybody have . . . any other questions?'), Dr. Greenwald would be worth spending a priority on, that is if registration were an issue in the honors program. Homework questions, if requested, are solved in class in entirety. Class is a good mix of reviewing homework and new topics. He makes sure supporting ideas learned elsewhere are understood before venturing into new subject territory.

This is my second class, and my second comment on Harvey Greenwald. What can I say? He's one of the greatest math teachers I've ever had. His class had the same exact structure as 142. Homework due Tuesdays and Fridays, 3 midterms on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th week. Great curve. Beware though, 143 isn't nearly as easy as 142 was. Make sure you really understand series, otherwise you'll have a lot of trouble on the midterms and the final. Greenwald has made my whole math experience at Poly very entertaining, and I'm looking forward to taking MATH 241 with him next quarter. If you EVER get the chance to take a class with Harvey Greenwald, take it. You won't regret it.

This is my second time doing this for Dr. Greenwald. He's just as great as you can probably get in CPSLO. Frankly, I've been struggling with most of the material in this course, but thank to Dr. Greenwald's help (and office hour), I got a B. He's very helpful and kind. Highly recommanded!

I just found this web page. I had Dr. Greenwald for 143, 242, 311 and 319 back in 1974-77. He was great then and I'm glad to see he's still great.

I had another professor: VanLingen - horrible teacher. I was there for a week, understood nothing and was sooo lost, so I dropped it. Now I'm taking it again and this is the best math teacher I've had for a very long time. He's awesome. Great for office hours, very easy to approach. He lists the math step by step on how to do the problems. He assigns homework and give you credit for it so you stay caught up. The curve for the class is great too. 90-100 is an A, 80-89 is a B, and 50-69 is a C. etc... I'm not doing superb in class because I've personally had sucky teachers up til now and I'm behind, but he's awesome and waking up at 7am to get to class is so worth him. Seriously, I'm awake for his 8am lectures and that in itself proves how great he is. I'm done w/ math, but I'd def take him again if I had to do more.

He is a really good teacher. Everyday I went to class, I actually understood the lecture. He teaches in a way that you can really follow him. His grading is very lenient too. He gives lots of partial credit and curves all tests. Take him at all cost.

Greenwald is an interesting character. You will find this out if you take him. Greenwald does curve tests if the average is low and I honestly do not know how I received a B in this class. He gives you so many points on test questions for trying that it is hard to fail the class. I honestly got every single question wrong on the first Test but someone I got a B+ on it because of all the points he gives to students for effort and the steps you followed to get to your conclusion. Hopefully I will be able to take him for Math 244 but his class is already full before registration begins because everyone who used priority picked him first because he is just that great of a teacher. Did I mention that he is very helpful during office hours? He will also add more office hours the day before a test to help anyone with last minute questions. So take him if you can!

greenwald is pretty much the best professor i've had. he is very clear on how he presents the material. his tests are a little hard, but he gives a lot of partial credit and curves nicely. he is so awesome, he has a facebook group...that right there should be enough to convince you to take him.

I really liked Greenwald. He's a great teacher. He repeats several phrases all the time, which sounds like it would be annoying, but it's actually kinda funny. He always says it's his intention for tests to resemble homework, and they do, but the test problems are much harder than the homework. The final is tough, but if you do the homework (which I only did about 2/3 of the time) and look it over before tests (I didn't do this much either) you'll do well. I highly suggest taking Greenwald if you get the chance.

First off, Calculus 3 is a pain anyways. Thought he was an awesome professor. The only thing I hated was that he doesn't spend much of the time going over example problems. When it comes to do homework, most of the time I had no idea what to do. Get the calculus solutions: they will help. So I spent hours in his office hours. He was awesome. Extremely helpful. Probably one of the nicest math professors I've met! His tests were pretty hard. Make sure to look over EVERY homework problem before tests. He gives partial credit on everything. And he collects the homework. But he only gives 3 midterms and a final so study up. I loved him though. Definitely would take him again.

Greenwald is really an amazing teacher. I missed class a lot, because I could never wake up in time. BUT he really is a great teacher. He is very clear in his examples and is open to answer any questions from students. His office hours were right after class too, so they were very convenient and helpful. He does grade homework, but the assignments really help you understand the material better. His tests are really easy to get an A on, in my opinion; but you\'ll just have to take them and see for yourself. Overall, he is awesome. I\'m glad I took his class.

Greenwald is seriously a great professor. He has three midterms and a final, and collects homework twice a week. His tests aren't easy but they are very reasonable. His very approachable during office hourse and will help you with whatever homework problem you ask him, and he knows how to answer everything! He is also very understanding of all your problems with math and will always ask if people understand or not.

Technically, Greenwald is a great teacher. He definitely knows his stuff and for the most part the lectures made perfect sense. The reason I rate him so poorly is that he is by far the least interesting teacher I've had so far. I've always liked math but I so hated going to his class. Everything from the way his voice is a droning sound to how he repeats himself over and over again (if you do have to take him you'll notice his sayings) BUGGED me. To be fair I did have him at 7 am so I suppose that could have something to do with it but still. I can't see him changing much as the day goes on

Greenwald is a fantastic math teacher! Everyday is a lecture, of the same format, and he presents all the information very clearly. Every 5 minutes he stops to see if anyone has a question. It's a class where you have to pay attention, but if you do you end up learning and having awesome notes. Homework due twice a week so not much of a workload, no quizzes, 3 tests and a final. The tests are worth 20% of your grade, try to really well on them because they are easy and very possible to get an A. The final was harder than expected, so don't depend on it to boost your grade. Also, he can be funny with is repetitiousness with his sayings, it'll keep you a little more entertained during the lecture xD

Harvey Greenwald is the MAN. Seriously though. This guy is hung like a horse. Definition of a bromigo professor. Get this professor a soon as you can. He is the John Elway of math instructors. Excellent teacher, ridiculously knowledgable, extremely understanding. And he probably asks the class 48100104950181648383 times if the are "okay so far." Hands down best math prof I've ever had.

Dude Greenwald is so good! You can tell that he has been teaching for awhile and his lectures seem somewhat scripted. Not to say he is boring (he is not) but he just knows what he is doing up there. Also he is very approachable during his office hours. Each time that I have attended his office hours it is packed with students! The midterms(3) and final are very fair and reasonable. I would highly suggest this professor.

Greenwald is awesome! He walks you through everything is teaches you how to solve problems step by step. Exams are fair and basically just homework problems so redo all the homeworks before the tests - we had 3 midterms and a final. You'll learn to read the new language that is Dr. Greenwald's handwriting, but once you do, it all makes sense.

Greenwald is great for those of you who have a difficult time grasping the concept of business calculus or calculus in general. Every class period, he takes at least have the class answering any questions from the homework. His office hours are a little bit crazy with so many students but you can ask the same things in class and get your questions answered there. His tests can be slightly difficult but his grading system allows for a fair grade. Overall i would recommend him over many other teachers i have heard about.

Dr. Greenwald is a really good professor, I was just too busy with other crap to put the necessary work into this class. He has homework due twice a week, which is a definite bitch, but if you don't do it you'll fall behind. This class is not hard, just has a good amount of workload associated with it.

dr greenwald is a GREAT teacher. i got a c because math is hard for me, and no amount of clear teaching is going to change that. however, dr greenwald has a major curve (60-79 is a C) and is a really nice guy. he's super helpful, gives really clear explanations, is patient like nobody else, and will actually work around what his students need. dr greenwald's exams are pretty fair, and although he collects homework twice a week (which can be really tedious), it definitely helps prepare you for the exams (all test problems are similar to those found in homework). dr greenwald is REALLY nice, i'd definitely take him again and would recommend him to other students.

Harvey is a great teacher!! Definitely talk this guy. He goes over every point and really makes sure the class understands what he is talking about. There are three midterms and a final. There are no quizzes, which is nice. But there is hw, but the hw only helps your grade as long as you do it. Most other teachers make 10% of your grade quizzess, but harvey makes 10% of your grade hw. So just do your hw, its not that bad. And any questions you have on hw, he will answer in class. His test questions all come out of the hw, and he will always tell you that. So for tests, just make sure to review all your hw problems and you will do fine. He will curve at the end to. TAKE HARVEY! Hes the best!

Although I didnt get credit fore this class, I would recomend this prof. He is very organized and presents material very well. He goes through questions everyday, and his tests are very straightforward. I however am math challenged.

Harvey Greenwald was one of those teachers who actually cares about the well-being of his students and their level of success. Professor Greenwald lectured very clearly and always went out of his way to help the students who were failing to understand the material. Overall, I turned out to do a lot better in the class than I had originally expected. During the quarter you will have two homework assignments each week, 3 midterms and a final. There are many chances to earn points. Also, i think the SI class is very helpful to take along with the class b/c it makes you keep with it. Have fun in Greenwald's class. He is definately the #1 person to take.

I would take him again for any math class that I had to take. However, it is very difficult to get used to his horrible handwriting and unorganized notes. The most helpful thing was to do the homework...his tests match it. Look for concepts that have only one or two homework problems...he picks a lot of those for test questions. Overall, he was a great teacher and I learned a lot from him. He makes this class fairly easy.

Greenwald is by far the best math professor I have had. He teaches at a comfortable pace, and does a good job helping on an individual basis. He is also easy going and lenient on absenses and homework.

Dr.Greenwald is definitely one of the top math professors. His lectures are organized and he has this great ability of conveying the material at a level so that anyone can understand it. He's always willing to go over any homework problems no matter how long it may take, yet he manages to teach the students all they need to know. His lectures aren't boring at all and if you can't make it to office hours, he'll always have time for appointments. His tests are fair (problems come straight out of the book) and curved. Great math professor---take Greenwald just once and you'll see why.

He is definitely one of the better math prof's that I've had at Poly. Really helpful in office hours and is really willing to meet the students half way... His classes are pretty clear, since he is teaching some advanced concepts and he keeps the beat up enough that you're usually not falling asleep. Hmwk load is fair as are the tests.

He goes over homework before you have to turn it in, his tests aren't unbearable, He's not a cake-walk, but he seems eaisier because when it comes down to it, you know the stuff because he taught it well. highly recomended...

What can I say? Harvey is the best teacher at Poly. I've had him for every calc class I've taken b/c he's the best. If you actually want to know anything about math this is your man. One downfall, is that he;s repetitive, but it gets funnier everytime. The first thing out of his mouth everyday is "Is there any questions on the homework?" If you want he'll do 'em all. Don't pass up the chance, if you get it, to take one of his courses. He is pretty tough on the test but even if you think you did lousy, you come out with a B.

This is my third time posting here for Dr. Greenwald. I had a wonderful year of taking 142, 143, and 241 with him. What can I say? Class was awsome. I think I'm going to take 242 with him, even though it's not required for my major. I like his class THAT much. Everything was pretty much the same - homework due Tues and Fri, Tests every 3 weeks, awsome grading curve. And of course, a wonderful professor that is more than willing to help you out, be it during class or office hours.

Greenwald, is probably the greatest math teacher I have ever had, The quarter is only halfway over, and I must say that I have never regretted a moment to take a priority to take this teacher, I thought that my class was going to be insanely difficult, but Harvey makes things so that even a monkey can understand the problem, as he relates material as far back as little as 2+2, and is insanely willing to help when asked, and offers help even when not asked, he is the nicest teacher, and best I have had in the last two years here, I wish that I could've had him for 244, but unlucky me. Take this man if you ever wish to understand calculus

Harvey was overall a very, VERY good lecturer. As long as you pay attention in class and DO THE HOMEWORK, you shouldn't fail the class. Note that I said FAIL, not get a good grade... because let me tell you, his tests are some of the hardest math tests you'll ever take. They truely challenge you to make sure you understood the concepts you've learned, not just how to mechanically do a few different problems. Homework collected twice a week, 3 midterms (not 2, but THREE), and a final worth 30%. Bottom line, it's not his grading scale that gives people bad grades or even his way to teaching, but it is the class and material that is hard. There are definetly worse teachers than Greenwald, but not that many that are better from what I hear. Stick with Harvey, he's the man.

Dr Greenwald is the man...i know ive only had 3 math classes here so far, but i know this guy will be my favorite teacher through all my math experience. He knows what he's talking about and can relate it to the students in an efficient manner. The lectures arent boring at all, even though he's not the most hilarious guy, he has somethign about him that makes you want to listen to him. He's extremely helpful in office hours and he always takes time in the beginning of class to answer any questions. The homework load isnt too bad, but they take time. Theres 3 midterms, and the final. And he collects homework twice a week. His class isnt very difficult, but it is very hard to get an A. But overall this guy is an awesome teacher and i wish i could take him for more classes. Too bad im done with math now.

after having Borzellino for 143 I didn't think it would be possible to have a teacher as good as him. I was wrong Greenwald was just as good and even better in most or all areas. My favrit thing about this guy is that he told you the truth! He didn't tell you what you wanted to here, or tell you a lie to get your hopes up. You could put this guy up to a lie detector and he would pass with fling colors. at the start of a section hell just come out and say ok guys this is going to be hard so listen up! I'll try to make it easy but I don't promise anything. Ok guys this stuff is easy feel free to zone out if need be I'll tell you when to zone in again. His licture were never boring and were really helpful on the hw. Grading wise I think that he is easy as long as you don't want an A! I got an A but thas after getting 88,90, and an 89. and gettting a 93 on the final. I worked realy hard and if you want an A in his class it'll take a lot of hard work. If you want a B or a C then this guy is your mine he had generez curves for those grades. Take this guy if you can!

Greenwald is a great proffesor. He explains the concepts very well and gives interesting lectures. His test though are a bit harder than average, but if you are a good test taker you should do fine. Basically, if you want to learn the subject well, take this teacher hands down. If you want an easy A but not learn much...i heard Relick is the way to go.

What a great professor. His lectures are about as clear and as helpful as it gets. He never leaves anyone behind before moving on the the next part of the examples. He's almost excited when you show up for office hour, and he generally enjoys helping you out and seeing you grasp the concepts. Just a great person.

Harevey is an overall nice guy. I found that I had to learn most of the info myself and with a tutor, because he goes so fast in class which is not my style. But this is only because no one asked questions when he lets them every two minutes. There is homework due twice a week which is 10% of the grade and three midterms plus a final. The midterms got harder over the quarter and are difficult but not impossible. Harvey is a nice guy if you go to his office and is happy toaccomodate you in any way.

Very straightforward method of teaching. He knows exactly what he's teaching about and gives plenty of opportunities for questions. Office hours are extremely helpful. All homework assignments are given at the beginning of the quarter and if you keep up with that, the tests are no problem. Three exams and a final. Take him.

While Greenwald is very good at presenting the material clearly he talks in a kind of monotone. This made it hard for me (even though I honestly like calculus) to keep focused on the lecture. Also, midterms are, in general, easy. The final is a little bit tougher.

If you put work into you'd get the grade you earned. His tests are fairly straightforward if you did the homework and studied. Homework was collected every tues and fri. Overall, it's difficult to read his handwriting but he does grow on you. He's a good teacher and unlike other math professors, he's not out there to bring you down. He really wants you to pass.

There's a reason why Greenwald's classes always fill up during priority registration; he's the best. I had him for the honors program all last year (math 142, 143, and 241) and it took me a year of having other professors to realize how much better he is. He is one of the few professors who starts out every lecture doing homework problems people are struggling with. His tests may be difficult, but he is telling the truth when he says they're based on the homework. He's also a very nice guy who is never condescending or rude. So to repeat what others have said, I would take his class at 4 AM if he taught one I had to take. And I too would buy this man a beer.

best teacher i've had at cal poly. i have always been so bad at calculus (like never understood a SINGLE thing in class), but after Greenwald's lectures i'd walk out feeling like iactually understood something. it was unbelievable. the tests really do come right from the homework - so make sure to do it, plus it's worth 10% of your grade. he is so helpful, be sure to take advantage of his office hours. even though he seems really boring and monotoned at first, you'll warm up to him - he's actually quite a character. he's a just great guy. seriously, make every effort to take him.

Greenwald is the man!!! I've actually taken him for Calc 2-4 (Math 142, 143, 241) because he's that great! He presents material clearly, runs an extremely organized class, grades super fairly, and is super helpful in and out of class. Bottom line: Greenwald is the best math teacher at Cal Poly.

Absolutely awesome. He doesn't drop your lowest test like most instructors do, but I'm sure his tests are easier--the problems given are very similar to that in the homework. Greenwald gives extremely generous partial credit. One can almost argue his grading scheme isn't challenging enough. But lectures are easy to sit through and the examples are presented as clear as can be. After taking a multitude of profs for 141-143, I'm convinced Greenwald is the best prof in the math dept. The guy's definitely a genius and a great teacher to boot.

My only beef with him is that his tests are hard and long, but he is generous with partial credit. Other than that, he is a fantastic lecturer and really nice guy. Very helpful during office hours.

Greenwald is the sweetest man you will ever meet in your entire life! Here's the lowdown. He is lightning fast! He writes super sloppy! and you can't help but love him! I do have a few gripes though. I think he has forgotten how most students learn a few things in his class because he sometimes makes an assumption and the whole class gets lost. That didn't happen often though. He tells you that he makes the test problems look very similar to the homework problems, and for the first 3 tests that's true, but for the final, that's out the window. Most of the time the tests were worded exactly like the homework but the actual math part was considerably more difficult. If you didn't see the correct way to attack a problem right off the bat, you usually didn't finish the test. That's another thing, his tests are too long; it's frustrating but you learn to live with it. That really is my biggest gripe. If there were more time, I'm sure most kids would be able to sit down and figure out how to do all the problems he puts on a test, but there isn't enough time. If you can take fast notes and are willing to work your behind off then you may enjoy this guy. I can't imagine anyone dislike this man as a person, seriously, the sweetest man in the universe!

Best math teacher I have ever had. At first you think he is hard because he is very blunt and monotone when he lectures. But he is the complete opposite, he displays the material as clearly as possible and gives you many methods and algorithms how to go about a problem. His tests are similar to the homework but are kinda long. The final was extremely hard but its a math final. I wish I could take him again. Highly Recommend!

I had previously taken part of this course at another university with a professor who made the material much more confusing. Greenwald presented the material clearly and it was easy to understand. The key to doing well in the class was completing all of the assigned homework. He said that all the tests were like the homework problems and this was definitely true. The biggest complaint that I have about Greenwald is that it's sometimes hard to read his writing, but that is a problem easy to overcome. I would highly recommend Greenwald for any calculus course.

Proffesor Greenwald is awesome. He explains the material clearly and gives u the method to solve any type of problem. His test are kind of long, but they are exactly like homework problems, so study the homework well and go to class everyday and you will do fine.

Greenwald has a good presentation style- repetitive in case you don't hear the first time- so that the material gets pounded into your head. You'll leave the class with a good understanding. Watch out for the tests- they're kinda hard. One of the best math teachers I had a Poly.

Prof Greenwald kicks ass as in lecture. He is very good at explaining his material and gives very good examples in class. His homework is fair and not that hard, and he goes over any questions that you might have on them. Prof Greenwald also is a very nice guy. He understands that the material that he is covering is not very easy, so he understands when people have problems. However dont take him to be an easy teacher. Yes hes easier then most professors, but his test and a litte tough. He does a pretty good job preparing you for them, but the questions are a little tricky, and the finals a bitch. Overall is by far the best Calc teacher I've had here and recommend him.

"...and long days journey into nights..." - is just one of the quotes Harvey uses to captivate is audience, just before he finishes a long problem. Before the class starts he is just this normal guy - that all changes once he picks up that first piece of chalk. After that he gets this super human math energy and starts doin' his thing. What ever it is - IT WORKS. All of his material will stick with you, and he wont trick you when it comes to tests. He is an extremely fair grader - with a good weighting system. Super guy and great mathematition! My favourite part about the class is how he goes through about a pack and a half of chalk - he writes with such a passion that huge pieces of chalk break off and land on the floor - he breaks more chalk than he puts on the board ITS HILARIOUS. Take Harvey by all means possible!

Harvey is THE BEST MATH TEACHER ever! Plain and simple. I've had a few times now and he is so tight. He knows his stuff, presents it well, and knows how to be a nice guy, too. I see him around campus and he waves and talks to you -- really, from a math teacher? Yes. And adjustable office hours. I guess math can be fun...

Ok, there's a reason why I've taken Harvey every quarter for the past 4 quarters: he is one of the best math teachers I've ever had! I have never had a teacher that has been so structured. He lays everything out for you (almost like a computer sometimes), and when you ask him a question he tells you what you should know, what formulas you will need, and then step by step how to solve the problem. Greenwald will never make you feel stupid, except maybe on the tests because, <whew>, yeah those can be hard. The course is 3 midterms (1 every 3 weeks, and he always gets it back to you the next class meeting) and homework due just about every Tuesday and Friday. And man, make sure you do the homework because he grades it (10% of your grade is HW) and of course it will help you for the test. Also, YES, the tests are curved (on a bell curve), so it might not help you get an A but he will keep you from failing. He's a great teacher, and I've had an A all 4 quarters since 142 so he's not too hard. Well, I think I've said about enough. Professor, if you're reading this, YOU ROCK!!!

One of the greatest professors you will ever have in your life. DE's is a dreaded class, but taking it with Greenwald makes it very pleasant. His lectures are no-nonsense and straight to the point. Step-by-step, he will never leave you guessing about how to get from one point to the next. When you need to ask a question, he will clearly explain everything you need to know before being able to finish the problem on your own. Never wastes your time. He will assume that you had forgotten some stuff from previous classes essential to the material, so he reviews it in class. Very helpful in office hours as well. Homework is collected twice a week where the grader will check to see if you completed it and a couple problems are chosen to be graded. His tests are hard, the first two were not so hard but the third test and the final were killer, but gives really good partial credit. Your grade is HW 10%, 3 tests 20% each, and final 30%. Each test has 6 problems straight from homework problems varying from easy to hard problems. His curve works like this: 90% is an A and if you just miss it, you get an A- and 80% is a B where just missing it by a couple percent is a B- etc. If you are looking to really learn, then Greenwald is one of the very best at doing just that. He will say "I'll do one more example and then I promise to quit for the day" to end class. His class fills up quickly for these reasons, so do whatever it takes to get him. Do whatever it takes to get Greenwald for any class, you'll won't regret it.

This guy barely takes time to breathe; he's always presenting something new or going over problems. He knows his stuff cold, and he's very thurough in presenting the material. Weekly homework and tests are fair. He's also very helpful in class and ends up working through most of the weekly homework problems. He doesn't have much personality though. He's a good teacher, but a big math nerd.

I love Harvey. He is hilarous, once you realize he is a cross between Ben Stein and Mr. Rogers. He knows what he is doing, and conveys it really well. He is fair and approachable. Study hard, he gets you on the tests. The nice thing is he has a lower course grading scale, i.e. an 88-100 is an A, and so on, and the C range is 20 pts instead of ten. He's hard but good.

This is a very sad day. Only one math class left and I can't take it with Harvey. Harvey has been the most infulential teacher in my Cal Poly career. In short, Harvey is the man. Never has anyone been so dedicated and so enthusiastic about math. Everyday in class he never fails to entertain and educate. He has a one in a kind teaching style that is so effective you could get an ag student to differentiate. There is no question he cannot answer and spends the first half of the class making sure that all questions have been answered. His lectures focus on the applicable portions of the material and will only use a limited number of proofs to drive in the theories (exactly what every engineer wants to hear). Test are challenging, but with preparation are very do-able. He doesn't give you any curveballs and will be straightfoward with the exam questions. His final is hard. He puts hard and challenging material on the final to test the class and see how much they have learned. Even though the final is hard, Harvey bases his grades on accomplishments not percentages. Greenwald is the one professor that everyone must take before they graduate, even if you are a nutrition major. Rock on Harv!

DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THESE PEOPLE SAY. Greenwald is an atrocious teacher. I wish I hadn't listened to what all these people have said, because he is the worst math teacher I've had at Poly so far. HE DOESN'T TEACH THE MATERIAL. The book is high level, and pretty much just gibberish for people who aren't math majors. It does odd arbitrary things without justification. What makes this bad is that Greenwald doesn't teach a thing in class. He does a lot of useless examples of applications that have nothing to do with the homework due. As for the homework, he doesn't teach you how to do a single thing in there. He fields questions at the beginning of each class, but it's still a very bad system. Also, roughly every fifteen seconds, he says "And that's where we are up to the minute." He says this at least 20 times every day, and it gets very annoying. You can go to his office hours, where he will probably be of actual help. The problem is fitting into his tiny office hour schedule. If I could switch out of this class, I would immediately, without the slightest hesitation. Don't believe what these people say. Take someone else. If Matt White is available, he's a much better teacher than this geezer.

I LOVE Professor Greenwald

Greenwald is the best math professor I've ever had. He has a very methodical teaching style and his midterms are all very similar. He will answer any of your questions if you just ask him, so if you're lost, have him go over something again.

His handwriting took some getting used to (especially his y's). The first 20 minutes he would go over any homework problems that we had trouble with and teach for the rest of the period. He's not a bad teacher but it is a hard class so be prepared.

244 is a class where they try to cram D.E. and Linear in one quarter for engineers. At first you won't realize what this class is useful for or how it applies until you get to 3rd-year level classes. But that aside Greenwald does a fairly good job of explaining a very simplistic way of portraying that material. He's not easy but his questions are derived from homework. His handwriting is pretty bad but that will make you question what he's writing aside from just being a human xerox machine. i thought i could get through understanding the lectures alone but ended up getting a 54 (which he curved to a D) on the first test. he even asked me at the end of class while i turned in hw, "How you doing? You want to come into OH and we can talk about study tips?", this shows how much he cares for the struggling student. then i tried the hw thing and ended up getting 79's for the last two exams. his tests require knowledge in previous math concepts like completeing the square or incomplete polynomials so you might want to brush up on those or else you'll know what to do 244-wise but be stuck on simple algebra. a great teacher and he still recognizes me on campus! thanks harvey.

Great professor and a great guy. Always tries to be available to help students with their questions, even gives extra office hours on weeks with a test. He is very systematic in the way that he approaches the material and his class. Three exams on the third, sixth, and ninth weeks, homework due every tuesday and friday except on weeks of exams, where they are due on fridays (this allows you to have all your HW available to study). All his tests so far have seemed very fair, with no curveball questions to throw you off. I would take him for any math class I need.

This guy is the man. He's a very experienced teacher, knows the material perfectly from left to right, and knows how to explain it accurately and effectively every day. He is always willing to answer a student's questions, and he can come up with 5 ways to explain the problem. Differential Equations and Linear Algebra is quite a step off of Calculus, which is nice and easy, and the material in this class is somewhat simple, but there's a lot of work involved to keep up. Just do your homework and ask questions, and it should be an easy A in here. His exams are written fairly, based off of homework, graded fairly, and even curved so that most D's are C's. His classes fill up fast, so take him if you get the opportunity to. The 3 midterms are timed well. He's definitely the most solid professor that I've seen at Cal Poly so far. The final a bit tricky though.. (maybe it was just me) he added a twist to a problem that people were expecting, but it was fine. One of few teachers that actually curves math exams. I wish I had such a solid professor for all of my math classes. His handwriting takes a while to get used to, and his constant sayings of "we are arguably half way through the problem", "in a moment", only made him a more systematic professor. Everyone should take this guy for at least one quarter of math.

Greenwald is a good teacher. Keep up with the homework and you will do fine. I did most of the homework and didnt study much at all for the tests. If you want to just coast and get this class over with he is a good teacher. He is also very helpful in office hours. You ask him a question, and he will talk you through it as well as write it on paper. The best thing is he gives you the problem so you can copy it later and not have to frantically write everything down. He gives A LOT of partial credit on tests. He says as long as you know the method to a problem he will give you a lot of credit even if you just write the method out. If I had to take mroe math classes I would definitely take him again.

Great teacher. Very clear. Very organized. Very helpful. Assigns homework twice a week, which is kind of lengthy. Tests are hard but not too hard. I thought I would get higher than a C but I guess I didn't do well enough on the final. I would highly recommend him regardless.

Greenwald is the best math teacher I have had at Poly. He presents the material very clearly and does expect you to remember everything from previous math classes. If you have a question he will answer it and make sure you understand it before he moves on. He has 3 midterms which are worth 20% of your grade and the final which is 30%. If you do the assigned homework the tests are fairly easy. He gives a lot of partial credit and focuses more on the setup and procedure rather than the execution. He is very helpful at office hours and actually makes sure that you know the material. He is a pretty funny guy and very humble. I would strongly suggest taking Greenwald for any math class!

Greenwald is better than most. I think people make him out to seem way better than he really is. He's a good lecturer but his examples are usually the easiest possible, so they don't always help when doing homework. There are 3 midterms (20%) and a final. There is absolutely no curve so do well on everything. The tests are very straightforward and you should do fine if you do the homework. Overall, better than most but not the best.

Greenwald is a great teacher. He is very straightforward with what material you are expected to know and what material is going to be tested. Homework is due twice a week, and he will go over literally any questions on the homework in class if asked. That being said, homework is crucial. He pulls questions that are nearly identical to the homework for the midterms and final. Overall, not the most entertaining professor, but he definitely knows his stuff and makes the class extremely easy to pass. Greenwald is a yes.

Greenwald is the best math professor ever. If you have a chance to take him for any math course, do so. I took him for both Math 242 and Math 248. His lectures are very clear and he is very willing to help any student in the classroom and in office hours. He grades 10% on homework, three midterms at 20% each and the final is worth 30% of the total grade. His midterms can be pretty hard, but he curves. Greenwald rocks!

Everyone on here seems to think rather highly of him, but ihave to say this was my second time taking the first half of the course and he went too fast for me. I mean he was good at explaining but I got lost in the 6th or 7th week and I never came back. He just assumes you understand faster than most people do. He is rather good with partial credit, so if youwant to most likely pass, take him, but overall I don't think he is close to one of my favorite teachers yet.

I had Greenwald for 242 and 248 and honestly, he a premium and top-notched professor at Cal Poly. He is just great. Proofs are a really tough class, but he explains things in a clear-cut and understandable manner. Still lost in his lectures? He will take as much time as necessary with the homework problems in class if you do not get them. If that does not help, he is great in office hours and will explain everything you need to know about the problems. He is committed to ensuring that you understand the material well. The tests are really hard and require you to understand the toughest homework problems but they are fair. The first two are usually not that bad, but the third midterm is what got me a B+ instead of an A. He also curves, but does so such that getting an A is really hard, but it becomes nearly impossible to fail. This is a great professor if you are looking to pass a class and learn lots, but look elsewhere for an easy A. Never a dull moment with him as he will know you through your days at Cal Poly.

Just cannot say enough great things about this fantastic professor. He has been a treasure to the Cal Poly Math program. Try to get as many classes as you can with this guy. You will not regret it. He will always explain anything and everything you need to know. Can't get it? He is especially helpful in office hours, so take full advantage of it. He is one guy that you should not pass up.

GREENWALD IS THE BEST MATH TEACHER AROUND! When I was taking Methods of Proof (which technically is the biggest obstacle for Math majors), I was forunate to have taken CSC 141 to get a head start. The material is very tough but Greenwald makes it short and very clear--which is very hard when you have to cram at least 40 sections in 10 weeks. His tests come directly from the questions asked from book. He always ask students to ask him for homework questions before he starts the lecture--which is a good idea for you to bug him with homework questions. He's very understanding and he curves if not a lot of students did well. He also gives partial credit. It's very hard to get a D or an F in his class but very difficult to get an A.

Greenwald is amazing, when he lectures it's like a sermon on math, which somehow is interesting. He will help you with any homework problems and genuinely wants to help you. He does have a tendency to spend half of the lecture going over homework if you let him. He has homework due twice a week and once a week on weeks with midterms, surprisingly this isn't as time-consuming as it sounds.

Actually I graduated 20 years ago, but I have to say that Harvey Greenwald changed my life in college. Heck i used to go to his office hours (if there were none of his students waiting) and get help with any Math class...he was that cool. Professor Harvey Greenwald is the best math teacher that I have ever had. I've taken a lower division course (MATH 248) and a few upper division courses with him (the analysis series). He has an absolute command of the material that he presents, but that isn't the reason that Professor Greenwald is extraordinary; I've rarely had a professor who didn't seem to have a grasp the material. Professor Greenwald not only understands the material, he can convey it effectively, and with amazing directness and intellectual honesty. If there's a mental jump to be made, he doesn't gloss over it, or hand wave over it, or even leave it "as an exercise to the reader". He directly assaults the jump, explaining why it is valid, what other situations use the same trick, and how it was likely arrived at in the first place. Most importantly, he does not trivialize the jump, or present it as "obvious". He seems to possesses an appreciation for the difficulty of the concepts he is presenting (which is something that most professors seem to lose with time). Finally, he seems to really care about his students. He desperately wants his students to learn and truly understand the material, and he does everything he can to accomplish that goal. He is flexible with test scheduling, he makes himself available outside of office hours, and he is very responsive to e-mail. His tests are difficult, but not impossibly so, and are patterned off of homework. (Note, this does not mean that they are precisely like homework, just of comparable difficulty.) In closing, Professor Greenwald is something very special; in my mind Professor Greenwald's mathematical expository skill is favorably comparable to Halmos' mathematical writing skill. He is an able and effective teacher, and I treasure the time I have spent in his classes.
