This class is really a trip. I can't believe it is allowed to continue on like this. Is there no administrative oversight at cal poly? What the heck is going on!! I really felt like I was in the twilight zone this quarter. There is absolutely no structure, coherence, thought or life to this course. Every week there is a different speaker who lectures on some random topic having nothing to do with the previous lecturer or the bio half of the class. The material covered is so boring and cluttered with bio terms that have no meaning to anyone who is not a biologist that it is nearly impossible to understand what they are talking about, even if you manage to stay awake. To make it even worse, the only information outside of the lectures are the powerpoint slides from the lecture posted on blackboard. These slides are the funniest thing I've ever seen. I can't believe it! They look like they were constructed by a fifth grader after getting high for the first time. There is no information on them that is comprehendable and they break every rule of creating a readable powerpoint presentation. Then there are the quizes. I think we had two pop quizes which consisted of two completely random questions from randomly selected lectures. The midterm and final are even worse. They're filled with specific questions like "how many watts does the corn chopper 2000 need", that are impossible to anticipate and study for. The worst part is there is a 30 page powerpoint presentation due at the end. No information is given on what is expected from this, what topics are out there or where to find information. So, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH GOULD-WELLS. I know I've read about bad teachers on this site before but taken the course anyway without much of a problem. However, I assure you this will not be the case with Gould-Wells. This is by far the worst class I have ever been subjected to in my college career. This class really puts a bad mark on Cal Poly. I hope somebody will take notice of students concerns about this class and do something about it.

Expletives aside, she's about as understanding as a bullet and as intelligent as a stop sign. In fact, she IS a stop sign. You'll walk into her office, hoping to get maaaaybe five minutes of her time, and she'll send you packing in three seconds. 1) She doesn't consider you class to be important. 2) She is locked up in the aircraft hangar, and hates all of humankind because all she ever hears are electric saws and engines. 3) There is an upside: if you don't care either, she'll give you B's. BUT if you try your best on a project, she'll stare at you with her lazy eye and defend her notion that you must have "stolen" your idea from someone else and staunchly defend her theory. Tell me, how many articles have ever been written about the effects of chromium exposure on the digestive tract of the lesser Flamingo of Africa's high-alkaline (and very small) Lake Nakuru??!??! Just don't take her. If you have to, then maybe you should consider that God's punishing your for something.

She was by far the worst professor I have seen at CalPoly. She did absolutely nothing for the class. She had her TA's do all the grading. She was not ever at her office, and if you could find her she was absolutely no help. Everytime someone asked her a question she would either avoid it or answer something else. I think she just doesnt know anything. She was rude, and difficult to talk to. Overall, try to avoid her. Hopefully Cal Poly will catch on to her and kick her out soon.

This teacher is the most rude, moronic, patronizing, and evil bitch I have ever met. Way worse than Brady (CSC 141, avoid!). Avoid this teacher, and this class in general if you can. On another note, the Bio213, that goes with ENGR 213, taught my M. Ritter, is cool.

she doesn't teach it...she just makes hard tests where her answers are not the same as the lectures that we are being tested on....and the TAs grade maliciously for no reason what so ever....I got a D on the test when realistically I should have gotten a B....class is total BS since we have to make a 30 slide powerpoint presentation w/ notes for each slide and then we have one more test....each is worth 1/3 of the grade.....she is lazy and evil....take something else if possible....

She is the rudest and most useless professor I have ever had. The tests are ridiculously hard and impossible to study for. Don't bother to ask her a question, she will basically side step it and imply you are an idiot. The requirement of a 30 slide presentation with notes to go along with it is such a pain in the A$$. It's a time consuming waste of time. Avoid her at all cost.

The best way to start this off is to say that this is the worst class and the worst teacher I have taken at Cal Poly. First off, I'll start with Gould-Wells. She is only the coordinater for this course so she doesn't teach a single thing, which is definetly a good thing. I don't think there was one day in class that she didn't start the day off by yelling at us. She is probably one of the least approachable teachers and wouldn't accept people projects they turned in, if it was 10 minutes into class. Keep in mind these projects are at least 1/3 of the grade. It seems that she has no respect for the students at all, and I am not sure why she is still here. Now for the course. Before I took this class I was really excited about it. It seems like this course has a lot of potential that it just doesn't get to. Probably the worst part of this course is the choice of lecturers. The only one that is at least decent is Dr. Crockett, and I found him very interesting. Besides him, the other lecturers just talk about whatever random thing they want using the worst made powerpoint slides you will ever see. There is no homework, but somehow they manager to put together a midterm and a final. Both of these exams were too hard for the material that was given. They go into way to much detail, luckily for me I nearly have OCD when it comes to school so I can study this random stuff. The class average on the first midterm was a 58%. There was also two projects for this class. The first one was a journal critique we had to write on a scientific essay that was written for a way higher level than someone in an intro class that teaches absolutetly nothing. The other project was a 30 slide powerpoint presentation on basically whatever you want. Luckily they graded easy on these to make up for the poor midterm average but it is kinda insane that they assigned them considering they have 2 classes each with at least 150 students. The final ended up being multiple choice which had 12 multiple choice questions and like 13 true and false. Considering it is worth 1/3 of your grade that is pretty insane. I would not recommend this class and I would definetly never recommend Professor Gould-Wells

She doesn't even teach this class, just is the head person. Class is random engineers talking about some biology applications. Typically boring GE. Go, try to stay awake, read notes as many times as possible off blackboard before test, rinse, repeat. PP presentation is a joke, just make 3 good slides for front and 3 for end, make sure it meets other req, staple then turn in

This lady is really a space case. She kept insisting to study professor "Clark's" powerpoint from the second week -- but she, actually, gave it! The worst part of the class is the multiple homework graders. After a group study, I got a 13, another 18, and yet another 29 out of 30. Funny how that works when we all have the same answers! It is really sad that people like this exist at a university level.

I thought I was taking Ward instead of Gould but I ended up with her anyway. ENGR 213 is a complete waste of time. I suggest taking another course to fulfill whatever you need to fulfill. They made us buy a book which they probably wont ever use again because it was so useless. The problems were graded pretty harshly. I'll admit though I didn't go to office hours for help. Most everything in the course was irrelevant to my major and the lectures are pure misery. Everything they teach is on power point slides which they post on BlackBoard and they test is directly ripped from them. Homework questions that are assigned don't even fill up 10 percent of the test. In conclusion, this class was a gigantic circus with a different clown "teaching" every week.

About ENGR 213: It is a 2 unit course and general ed, so it shouldn't be all that hard right? Wrong if you take this professor. Here is a summarized quote of what she said about the book they had us use for the first time, "Alright class, we have 6 homework questions this time. Yes, I know this book is a disgrace to all published books, and you will not know how to do most of the homework because I won't teach it and the book doesn't explain it." Oh yeah by the way these homework assignments are worth 30% of your grade. This class consists of multiple lectures, which were a complete waste of my time and registration money. I did not get much useful information out of this class at all. I wish i could get the 20 or so hours of my life back that was wasted in this class about nothing. About Gould-Wells: avoid!!! Avoid!!! AVOID!!! Eventhough she was only the coordinator of this class, this class had the least structure and organization of all classes i have ever taken. I mean if one person is assigned the majority of their time into doing just coordination and can't seem to pull it off, why should anything of what this person does be valid. Her testing was also redicules, she seemed to like to pull random things off what someone said, even if the fact was not very significant to what the lecturer was trying to say. One last thing, she got a hold of one professor's lecture and read it to the class. No elaboration of the slides, just read the 2 word blurbs or how ever many words happened to be on the slide at that time. Great teaching. OH YEAH!! In Summary: AVOID, DONT TAKE, RUN AWAY, WAIT UNTIL SOMEONE ELSE TEACHES THIS CLASS, PETITION FOR THE REMOVAL OF THIS COURSE FOREVER.

Geez, it seems like nobody using polyratings.com knows how to spell or use correct grammar and punctuation... Anyway, apart from the fact that most of the people who posted comments on this page are complete morons, they are all absolutely correct. This must be the worst class ever offered at Cal Poly. Seriously, what are they thinking? This class has been so horribly (dis)organized by Diana Gould-Wells, that it is almost funny. Even worse, I'm a Computer Science major and I have to take a class about ... cow manure processing? Alcohol production? Why?! I guess that's the CSC dept's fault though, not hers... By the way, I failed the class--actually I got an Incomplete--because I completely stopped going about halfway through the quarter. I will retake the class when Diana Gould-Wells has been fired and this class has been either reorganized or obliterated for the crap that it is. Does anyone know if there is actually a way to get the department to rethink the value of this course?

You would think with as much as I hated this class, that I failed it. Well I didn't, I received an A. I'm not sure if it was her or the class that bothered me so much. ENG 213 is taught by several professors, but she is the coordinator. I didn't so much mind the lectures by the other professors. The class was one of the most disorganized classes I have ever been in. No one really knew what was going on. I barely studied for the midterm or final because I had no idea what to study. Yet, somehow I received an A. This is not because I am brilliant, most students probably get good grades in this class, yet hate it. She also wanted us to come up to her office to get any of our graded work because she couldn't figure out an efficeint way to hand back papers. This is really surprising because the class had 120 students, yet my econ class had over 200 and he seemed to do just fine. As engineers, aren't we problem solvers? Well my econ teacher beat her out on this one. She wasn't very professional either, she actually fell asleep during one of the other professor's lectures. How pitiful is that? Unfortunately, I don't know if you can take another professor for this class. Well, we did our part by trying to encourage the department from dropping this as a requirement because it is a waste of time, but you may just have to suffer through it. It's not hard, just a waste of time.

Gould-Wells is the coordinator for the ENGR 213 and never really lectures; so, why even bother writing a polyrating for her? Because she keeps your grades and writes the exams. Seems like a simple task. But she is completely unwilling to help a student. She (or more likely, her grader) made numerous mistakes on the grading of the midterm. When these mistakes were brought to her attention, she replied that she would not grade just that problem, but the entire exam, and she would use strict grading standards for her grading. Basically, you were more likely to have a net loss in points rather than the gain that you would normally expect. You don't really have a choice on having her or not; if you take this class, she will be involved in someway, just beware of her.

ENGR 213 is the biggest turd floating through the flow charts. I can't believe that Dean lee or Baker can allow a class this poor exist. My view on this school is droping everyday. If I would have known Calpoly was going require such a useless class I would have transfered to Berkeley, despite the great reputation CalPoly has established. I'm sure when I become the next Burt Rutan I won't say I owe it all to CalPoly and ENGR 213 for teaching me the fundumentals of harnessing the energy of cow shit. Thanks President Baker for not standing up and asking why are we teachng this shit, wasting time, hiring waste-oids, and calling it required support. The only thing I have learned from this class is that if I don't graduate soon I'm going to keep supporting this crap. This girl isn't even a professor. Whoever refers to her as a professor is on crack. She is the first person to pursue a Ph.D. at Cal Poly, and is only a lecturer. She doesn't even lecture, she just writes the exams and grades the crap. She doesn't even grade the stuff. She has TA's to do that for her. She will only grade exams or homework that looks suspicious (she will crack down on cheaters. I was skeptical of the past reviews from the ENGR 213 class, saying that an A was pulled off out of nowhere. Somehow, though, I got an A, despite my having a low B before the last homework grade was inputted. Regarding the class, it is poorly organized and weighted. Gould-Wells is the coordinator of the class, so there are several teachers who teach the class. The homework was sporadic and ranged from very easy to moderately difficult, but some assignments were worth 70 points, while others were 25 (and it had nothing to do with the level of difficulty). It was hard to guess the general material that would be on the midterm and final, as we weren't told, and I wound up being very poorly prepared as a consequence. Overall, I learned very little of great importance and am glad that the class is over.

This class is completly pointless. It is a class to showcase the wonderful world of bio-engineering. Problem is that I have no desire to be one nor any intention either. Also, the class is composed of several differnet professors lecturing on random topics in the bio-engineering field with no logical flow from lecture to lecture. The homework was easy and the midterm and final were relatively easy. Only problem is that I had no idea what would be covered on either the midterm or final. This class should be dropped and Bio 213 (the class you're supposed to take with this class) should be raised a unit or so and go a little bit more indepth. That would be a better use for the units becuase most majors are complaining they can't add any more classes because of unit constrictions.

The problem isn't with Gould Wells...it's will this fuckin bullshit class. Crockett's the man, but the rest of the lectures provide little usefulness. One guest lecturer for one of the seminars actually told us before class started to be quiet or he'd kick us out....WHAT THE FUCK!!!??? ARE WE IN KINDERGARTEN....WHO DOES THIS BITCH THINK HE IS??!! Good for him for not telling me that personally, because I would have dropped him on his ass 10 times. Many of the Civil Faculty agree that this class is a crock, and should be elminated or revised. BIO 213 is fine, they should just incorporate some of the modern bio-engineering topics into that class. Use of polymers and ceramics to help people get a knee replacement, etc. is very good information and should continue to be taught, but the rest of the seminars are fuckin horseshit...except for Crockett..he's cool. So my advice Warren Baker....actually pull your head out of your ass, quit using our tuition money to fly down to Santa Maria instead of taking a car like normal people...(yes he does this...I suppose he feels his ass needs the additional confort he wouldn't get in the leather chair of a limo), make some sort of educated decision (you are a civil engineer), and get rid of ENGR 213. Thank you for your cooperation.

We watched a few movies, rode the bus, sat outside and counted cars, and turned in a couple papers and a final paper. The work load was very light. Plus she understands that 1 unit for 6 hours a week is ridiculous so she never makes you do any work outside of class. she dedicates a few periods just to work on projects.

We were supposed to meet twice a week, but only met 3 times the first 4 weeks of the quarter. Once she had a guest speaker come in to talk to us, she waited until he started speaking and then she left!!! She stopped class so she could go get a cup of coffee also. When someone would ask a question, she would say some sarcastic comment that wasn't very nice, and then ask someone else in the class to explain it to the person who,"wasn't paying any attention to me." The only upside to her is that she is the easiest grader ever. If you want an easy A or B, take her. If you actually want to learn, try and get someone else.

Don't plan on getting any perfects on lab reports, she always take a couple points off, but this really doesn't matter, you'll get an A if you just complete everything. All of these comments are so negative, but I really enjoyed Gould-Wells. I would definitely recommend for everyone to take her. There was rarely a class time where we stayed for more than 2 hours. Most of the labs were cancelled or given as work time or field trips to the bus or railroad tracks. She gives us plenty of time in class to finish our assignments. Overall this class is very easy, and she definitely makes it easier. She grades very liberally. Basically you get full credit if you make a good attempt.

Horrible professor. She wanted to change the class time because it was too early for her. boo hoo! yah so it's summer! Diana will not answer questions in class. When one is asked, she will find a student who knows, then have them do it on the board.. When no one knows, she will look to the solutions manual, or post something non-relevant on blackboard a week later. This was an intro to environmental engineering class, not thermodynamics diane! How hard can it be. I got a C because her tests are scandalist. Sure, she makes you do nothing the whole time, hardly any homework, and millions of overhead slides, but her tests are from outerspace. This is because she gets them from professors who taught the class quarters back. Diane is dumb. Soon she will be kicked out. Do not take her! you wont learn shit and your grade will suffer because of her laziness and stupidity.

This class ENVE 331 is very heavily weighted to know CHEMISTRY. It is absolutely necessary to have a very good grasp of stoichiometry to get an A in this class. There was virtually no hw, but the few assignments became critical to complete so you would know if you don't understand something. The tests are weighted more heavily on the material you learn in the first 3 chapters then in the rest of the book. I thought this was a very easy class, most people in my class thought she shouldn't be teaching. She specializes in air pollution and not ENVE 331. Take the time to understand where all the numbers in the examples in the book are actually coming from, and often directly tracing their source is very useful. Tests take problems from the book, but not off the ones assigned in the hw.

By far the worst teacher I have ever had at Cal Poly. She has no idea what she is doing. Throughout the whole entire quarter, she never did one example problem herself, and did not know any of the material in the class. If she did not have the solutions manual, she would not be able to answer any questions you had, and even when she did give you the answer out of the manual she could not explain it. Classes were worthless also. It pisses me off that Cal Poly's top ranked engineering program would allow such a lousy professor in their system.
