Professor Castellano is one of the nicest people I have ever met, teaching or otherwise. He is more than willing to help any student with a problem and sit with them to work through language difficulties. He may not always show up for class and his lectures may wander from time to time, but he is interested in his students and willing to work with them.

This was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. He is the nicest guy. I didn't learn a whole lot. But, I enjoyed the class. We never actually stayed the whole two hours. It was cool. I totally recommend this teacher he is like a grandfather.

This is one of the nicest professors at Cal Poly. He really is there for the students. His accent tripped me up sometimes but it made my listening skills much better! Take this guy and you will improve your Spanish!

what can be said about this guy? he really is a great teacher. he is very fair and extremely personable in office hours; always willing to help you out no matter what. he'll teach well in class, but i advise to go to his office hours. he's a poet and a writer besides the fact that he used to be some intellectual in chile a long time ago. he's got some stories to tell. great teacher, great guy. highly recommend him.

This guy is a sweet old man, but I hesitate to recommend him. In 121 I got A's on all my papers, in his 122 class I got it sent back to me and I was told to hire a tutor. Bring a hearing aid, and try not to fall asleep because he knows his stuff but doesnt present it all that well. I had a really hard time paying attention and didnt learn much. If he's your only option, sit in the front and go to office hours if needed, he's really understanding and helpful.

Castellano is an outstanding teacher. As for the person who said he is "not a teacher," perhaps they just weren't willing to learn and work. Cal Poly has been extremely fortunate to have a gentleman such as him teaching here. He is an accomplished poet, and is highly respected by scholars and poets alike. Castellano does speak quietly; I suggest you simply LISTEN to him and try to soak up some of his quiet brilliance. He is very understanding--especially to the students who offer him the respect and attentiveness that he deserves.

Castellano-Giron is like a teddy bear. No matter how frustrated you may get because the lectures go off tangent, or becuase he speaks so softly you cannot hear what he is saying..you cannot get mad at this guy. He appreciates student participation so much he won't correct you if you're interpretation of a literary style is WAY off..You can tell he has a true passion for what he teaches...It is not hard to get a good grade in this class...HOWEVER he is very strict on written assignments, so if you're spanish grammer sucks be prepared to see some harsh red pen comments.

One of the best things about the Modern Language Major is how personal all the teachers are. They are passionate about what they are teaching and passionate about the students that they are teaching it too. Castellano is no exception. Because of how much he has expierenced in his life, he is able to teach in a much more interactive way, versus just reading out of a textbook. If you are looking for a read and memorize type of class, this isn't it. Most of the Modern Language classes aren't. He is a kind teacher that cares deeply about his students. If you go into his classes wanting to learn, he will inspire you to do so. And on top of all that, he's pretty funny too.

Dr. Castellano-Giorn is the best Spanish literature professor at Cal Poly. I am fortunate to have had him for two Spanish literature classes. He is truly an inspiration for all genres of literature. He is a literary, artistic and creative genius. I have learned so much from him about Spanish literature and literature in general, than I have with any other other professor. I love his personality. He is sensitive, soft spoken and has a great sense of humor. There are more students who love him and his classes than those who think "he is not a teacher" or "he is boring". Those students were just not willing to learn from nor take advantage of the brillance and intelligence of a great poet, novelist, and artist. Thank you, Dr. Castellano-Giron for your inspiration!

Boring, old man. He should retire! Hard to understand Chilian accent. Unfortunately, the Spanish dept doesnt have much of selection of good faculty to choose from. So, far ive been dissappointed. i m transferring out to a better program elsewhere. Dont major here!

I have had Dr. Castellano for three classes, Span 305, 305, and 410. He is an invaluable resource to Cal Poly because he has lived the literary movements he teaches. He has met the writers and poets he teaches about, with true insight into their writings. He is a Vanguardist and Surrealist, whose artistic expression include: novels, poetry, painting, singing, etc. He is a literary geneous and has published many books internationally. Since he is a surviving writer from the time period, he is an irreplaceable resource for Cal Poly. Others may talk about Neruda or Huidobro, but how many have actually lived it? His life experiences flavor his teaching. Hearing a Chilean speak Spanish, boasts a clear Castellian accent that is cleaner than "Mexican" spanish. Learn from someone who knows what he is talking about! Plus he cares about his students success!

One of the best professors I have ever had. He has a unique teaching style that makes you want to learn the material. He has had so many life experiences that he uses to teach his courses. Take his class if you ever get the chance.

Truly an inspiring professor. The experiences that Castellano-Giron shared with us and the study of Pablo Neruda's work have really been incredible. His unconventional style of lecture is to be appreciated once you grow accustomed to it. I will always carry the memories of this class.
