Bailey, Karl  

Karl Bailey is the son of C.Bailey. Like mother like son. This teacher does not teach the material. He expects you to learn it COMPLETELY from the book. He even tells you the first day of class if you pay attention. This guy tries to save as much paper as he can. so almost all the things are on his website or on blackboard. check his website often. It is more of a teacher than him.

Believe me, compared to the rest of the 124 teachers, karl is way better. (I already had his mom and I have seen some others lecture, adn they are pretty bad). Some people may think that he sucks because he does not go over everything in class, but there is no way any prof could. There is not enough time, and there is so much material. Overall, you have to skim the book and do all of teh homework. he is really not that bad. He is a young guy too, so he does not have a stick up his ass like a lot of the older chem profs. He even lets you out early a lot. He is very good in the office hours too.

he is good at understanding students because he is young but he doesnt have much experience teaching. be prepared to read your book. to get the real answers.

Dr. Bailey cannot teach very well. In fact, he doesn't teach. He warns you of this on the very first day of class. You actually have to read the textbook and do homework problems like resourceful college students. This sounds terrible, but it is status quo with the horrendous Chem department, especially for 124. The tests are hard, but you are expected to do poorly on the tests. I thought I was failing, but I got a B since I was over the class average. Dr. Bailey is cool. He makes up for the terrible class he has to teach with his attitude. He is young and lets you out early a lot. Basically, he cannot teach very well, but no one in the Chem department can and he is cool so I would recommend him. By the way, this class is taught using Blackboard, a system where everything is supposed to be online. Lectures consist of a powerpoint presentation prepared by either the author of the book or written by his mom. All of the assignments and grades are online. Check his website often to survive in this class. One more thing the class is taught using Macs, so have fun attempting to get them to work.

Karl is by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. If you're willing to put in the time, he's willing to give you all the help he can. He's honest with you and treats you like a colleauge rather a subordinate. Use the text, but after all, we are in college...that's what they're for. If you tell him you don't understand something, he will explain it in a million different ways until you understand it. He wants you to succeed. He's really on top of blackboard. All you need to know about the class is there. It's not an easy class, but chem never is. Don't expect to slack. He's young and still remembers what it's like to be a student, therefore he relates much better than most. Karl is a great guy and I would trully recommend him to anyone.

This guy does not know what he is talking about. He is a very nice teacher but he just doesnt teach so you have to learn everything pretty much on your own. I suggest not to take this teacher.

He is a down-to-earth instructor. His tests are brutal, but he fairly grades. His labs are easy and he doesn't really care about the yellow sheets. If you have to take Chem 124, take him.

Bailey's class was boring, long, and suprisingly easy. He can't teach to save his life, but the fact that the other studio prof do the work for him helps. The tests and labs are easy. Having to do mandatory worksheets reminds you that you're still in high school. Hopefully you remember chem from high school cause you'll need it

Karl Bailey was a pretty good teacher overall. The lectures were a little boring, but he was more than willing to help during labs. He gives a lot of in class time to do homework while he and his TA's walk around helping everyone. His tests were overall pretty fair. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Karl Bailey.

This guy raises my test tube! WOW, what a hottie. Why waste your time going for bitchy, stuck-up PolySkanks when you can stare at a piece of eyecandy like Bailey? I'd have done better in the class if i could stop staring at his rippling pecks, suave hair, and enormous...ego. Take this guy and you'll be blasting entropy all over the ceiling!!

given that most of the chem professors suck, karl bailey kicks ass. his lectures make sense, he is always in his office, and will explain something a million ways unitl you get it. hes also just a cool guy to have. we screwed around so much in his class, and he thought it was as funny as we did. you do have to do the work though. labs are good, just a worksheet usually, and he acutally knows whats going on with them. hes a fair grader, but he takes off 2 points for a math error, so that can screw you over if you make as many as i do. but hes the best one to take.

I learned a lot and worked hard in Baileys class. The good thing was that he's really nice and he'll spend as much time as it takes (in office hours) to explain something till you get it. He definately rewards people for going to office hours -- he tells you what kind of stuff to expect on tests, etc. Its not an easy class, no matter who you take, but he does a good job with it. He listens to suggestions and almost always goes with them. OOh... and beg him to do hand-written notes that you have time to write down. Power point seems convienent, but you learn nothing.

Bailey is a great chem professor, I am terrible at chem but he was always willing to put in the time during office hours to help me out and I ended up getting a B in the class even though I probably should have gotten a lower grade. From what I heard from friends my workload was way less than with other profs also.

Bailey Rocks! If you have a choice between another prof and bailey, get karl. He is fresh out of his doctorate and enthusiastic as hell, and he since he is so young he still remembers everything he learned in college and remembers what it is like to be a kid. really nice, really outgoing, and when you are done getting help in his office hour (which he is ALWAYS available for) you can just sit and talk about surfing. My number one choice for chem, i had him for both 124 and 125, very satisfied. And he curves like a champ!

Wow, I didn't know that his dad was the dean -- that just don't seem right. Anyways, he's not a terrible teacher, but he really does seem to be trying too hard to be cool. I ended up having to learn most of the material on my own. Meh...

This guy was okay. Tests are pretty hard, but if you do the worksheets youll be fine. He does get pretty boring at times, but he does have a cool demo every once in a while.

I started out not really liking Karl that much but I ended up having a favorable opinon of him. Doesn't really matter because he's not teaching here anymore.

dr. bailey was a great ochem professor. he was easy to understand and i looked forward to going to his lecture three days per week. he is always available during his office hours and wants his students to ask questions if they do not understand the course material. also, he is pretty cute so it made it easy to go at 8:00am on fridays. the tests are fairly graded and not too difficult.

Dr. Bailey has given me a better understanding of chemistry. His O-chem class was by far one of the best and I love the way he teaches. If you can take him Go for it. You will enjoy the quarter.

I've always struggled in chemistry, but Dr. Bailey's lecture and handouts helped me understand the material better. It also helps that he knows the material really well, and he seems to really enjoy teaching chemistry. He is the best chem teacher I've had at Cal Poly. He really wants his students to pass the class and he will spend a lot of his time outside of class to help you understand organic chemistry. His practice exams are similar to the actual exams, and for our class, we were allowed to replace our lowest test score with our final exam grade.

Tries too hard to be the cool professor. Decent teacher but there are better and brighter ones.

At the beginning of the quarter I thought he was a cocky young professor who thought he knew everything. But by the end of the quarter I realized he was just simply a genious, he was willing to help anyone at anytime. He was always available when you needed him and genuinely cared about each and every student and will work with you to recieve the grade you need. Take advantage of office hours, I wish I would have sooner!

This teacher is mildly cute, not that skilled and definitely not a genius. His enthusiasm, I think, is a smokescreen for not being all that bright. How come he never teaches upper level classes? Not a bad experience, but someone has to set the record straight.

Pretty average teacher. Not the best but not the worst either. His dad is the Dean and his mom is the Chemistry Department Chair, so you know how he got the job.

First off, let me say that in no way, shape or form is Bailey cute. He tries way too hard to be cool and has this annoying lisp that he tries real hard to conceal, but just always seems to come out. Not only that, but his teaching style is extremely hard to follow. He blasts through his lectures and at the end you have no idea what just hit you. Often times at the end of his spiel, he will ask if their are any questions, but by that point you are so lost, you don't even know where to begin. When you do ask questions, he proceeds to make you feel stupid for not being the chem nerd that he is and knowing all this bullshit. To top it all off, his tests are completely awful and no matter how much I studied (which was a lot), I never felt completerly prepared. The only reason I was able to pull a B in his class was due to the online quizes each week (easy 40/40 points as you can do them as many times as you want) and doing well in lab. If you understand chemistry already, then Bailey might be the prof. for you, but for the many of you who don't and actually want to learn something... stay away!

This class definitely has a lot of studying because there is a lot of memorizing and just material in general. Prof. Bailey's lectures were very clearly outlined on an overhead which you could go online and print out before class to follow along with. the tests were really hard (3 midterms and a final) the class averages were consistantly in the 60's. At the end of the quarter he gave us a choice to drop our lowest test grade if our final exam grade was higher than it. He also has 5 take home quizzes that you fill in online and are EASY to get full credit on and boost your grade. Overall i never got better than a 77 on a midterm and still managed to pull a B, so Bailey knows the class is hard and adjusts grades accordingly. i would recommend him over other teachers teaching this class.

Dr. Bailey is the best chemistry teacher I have ever had at Cal Poly. This clas can be some what difficult but if you go to Dr. Bailey's office hours he will help you out a lot.

Oh man, this guy is truly the best teacher I've ever had!! No joke! He is so incredibly helpful, especially at office hours. He sincerely wants to help all of his students as much as he possibly can. This will be his last quarter here at Cal Poly, so if you are fortunate enough to have Dr. Bailey as your teacher, make sure to take advantage of his office hours, and don't pretend like this class will be easy, cuz it's not. It takes up lots of time, but as long as you study all the material and do your homework, you'll be fine!! If you read this, thanks Dr. Bailey, you made this quarter bareable, and enjoyable!

Dr. Bailey is a really good 0-Chem teacher. He really wants his studetns to get the material and is very helpful during office hours. This class is a tough class, so you kinda have to do your part and study your ass off though! It is a shame that he will be leaving soon...take him while you can.

THE best chemistry teacher I have had so far at Poly. I've never liked chemistry, but he made it really interesting. In general, I just have a better feeling about chemistry now. I feel like I got a lot out of the class. Tape his lectures. He talks really fast and I found it is the best way to get everything down. Thanks Dr. B!!

Dr. Bailey is the best teacher I have ever had. He presents the material clearly and efficiently. His knowledge of the material is as boundless as the far reaches of space. He finds a way to relate to the average apathetic college student and actually make organic chemistry interesting. He is great in his office hours as well, he is willing to answer questions and makes sure you know the material. He is cool guy as weel, a true swavage.

Karl really isn't that great. He a bastard grader and way overrated.

Can you say cutie pie?!? Well, I didn't actually have him, but my friend did for lab. When he'd walk by us doing our HW, he'd always stop to help us, even though neither of us had him for lecture. Oh, yeah, and he's cute as he ll.

This guy is awesome in lab! Ive heard that he isnt great in lectures but I highly recommend him for labs. I heard that everyone else had to write big lab reports and took really hard tests in their labs, but ours was stress free. We had lab worksheets and 3 lab writups that were pretty easy, and he basically gave everyone full credit. We did have 2 lab quizes, but they were pretty basic. They were about the reactions we did in lab, not shit from that useless, overpriced blue lab book. Chem labs can be so stressful, but he made it really fun and easy. He even took my stuff of the rotovap and corked it for me because i left for a bit!! It was seriously one of my favorite classes. If you can take this guy for any lab, do it!!

First of all Bailey is ten million times better than the lecture instructor I had who I will not name. He is actually helpful and a real sweet guy most of the time ;). Most of the girls think he's pretty cute and he knows it which is pretty funny. The little that I learned in 317 I learned from him. He took the time out to help people with lecture stuff which wasnt even his job but I think he realized the idiot in charge wans't teaching us anything. He's a great guy and you should definitely take him.

Okay, I just wanted to respond to the last entry. "How come he never teaches upper level classes?" Chem 312, 316, & 317 are upper level classes, and he teaches them because he's a intelligent and helpful teacher.

I learned that if I were to take up hunting, I should shoot deer, not bears, because a bear will hunt me back if I successfully wound it. Fascinating! I didnt know that the key to production and operations management was so brutally simple!
