Remember those innocent-looking brain teasers of grade school? Well, they're back, and they count. ME 211 is all about applying equations to problems. You can recite "The moment of a couple is the same about all points" all day long and end up s-ca-rood at crunch time. Quizzes are 10% each (* 4 = 40%), so if you bomb one, you're sunk. Do your homework, every bit of it, it counts, if only for experience solving problems. He's got an oldish accent and is very difficult to follow. Follow along in the book during class for effective learning. Occasionally, the PE grader (John?) would come in to let us know why we were making all those mistakes and actually TEACH US SOMETHING. I assume that you're required to take ME 211, so I close with this: TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE ELSE.

Gascoinge doesn't really teach the material, but more just puts up the examples from the book on the board. If you are going to take his class be prepared to learn almost everything out of the book. Also, he doesn't curve the class and homework counts for 10% and is graded on the amount of correct answers, so be prepared to do lots of homework.

His lectures are a waste of time. I went, but I should not have. I think he does curve the final grade slightly, but don't count on him doing it.

Dr. "GAS-COIN" is ok. he's kinda boring but he's the type of teacher that is really helpful in office hours. his tests are very reasonable and not that bad. and the quizzes very very homework related. it's up to you,, if you can stay awake, then take him. STATICS IS HARD NO MATTER WHO YOU GET!!

This guy is a joke. He doesn't teach anything. His lectures consist of writing the poroblems down on the board and that's about it... When he is asked a question by a student, he'll give the most vague, unhelpful answer possible. I haven't learned anything from him in 5 weeks. This is not because I haven't tried; I've even gone to office hours... This guy just can't teach. He might be able to do the stuff as it's presented to him, but doesn't know a damn thing about education. Avoid this asshole at all costs.

Gascoigne knows his statics, but still mystifies the whole class. His lectures consist of drawing an example, vaugely mention a method to slove it, and going on to the next without ever solving the problem or explaining the ideas behind it. Office hours only confuses most students more. The guy is harmless in a way -- he confuses his class so much that the least confused somehow pull an A in the curve. I honestly thought the class was pretty easy, since I just recalled from Physics and ignored him. My recommendation is to still go to class, ignore him, and work on the homework probs. If you have a question (you will), try and ask him, but you'll probably find an answer quicker if you ask your old physics 131 teacher. Statics is easy if you get it, tough if you don't, and impossible if you expect Gascoigne to teach you.

What an idiot! Be afraid of his tests, they can have stuff he doesn't cover at all. If you want to take someone that lecture is worthless for, take him. I got a B by not being quite so confused as everyone else. He shouldn't be allowed to teach, as you'll have better luck sleeping with the book under your pillow. If you get stuck with him, go to lecture because he'll start doing quizzes late in the quarter, but don't pay any attention. It is statics, you need to put the time in, that's just how it is. His tests set you up well for the common final though, it was easy after his stuff. BTW, he propogates errors on tests and doesn't know what partial credit is, besides getting free body diagrams correct.

Hal had a way of confusing me with his lectures. He would write up on the board, indistinguishable diagrams and randomly sing, "I've been working on the railroad". Hal is a nice guy and smart but cannot teach at all. After a while I would go to class and just space out because the lectures were so worthless. I even had other professors laugh at me when they found out that I was going to take Hal. Anyways I would avoid his class especially if you want to pass and go onto intermediate dynamics with a decent understanding. He also doesn't rely on vectors solutions as much as he should. During office hours he would attempt to help the students out but would get sidetrack and just could not convey his understanding of the subject to the students.

I got a D from Hal Gascoigne, and the only reason why, is because half way through the quarter I gave up on trying to learn it from him. Instead, I started going to another teacher's lecture, and suddenly it all seemed so clear. The diagrams this guy draws on the board are so incoherrent and illegible, which is pretty bad because solving problems in this class often times requires clear and communicative diagrams. As far as example problems go, expect to see the same problems already worked out in the book copied word for word onto the board with not much additional input. So anyways, this guy sucks and I wouldn't recommend taking him.

Great in office hours, but not exactly the most engaging lecturer.

Fine teacher, but a little dry in the presentation. I wouldnt suggest having her at 8:00 in the morning, might be difficult staying awake.
