Half the time he didn't even talk about math, he just babbled on about his construction work that he did over the summer. When he did talk about math, he scribbled it all down lightning speed on the board, barely explaining what he was doing.

Carlton was honestly the best stat. teacher I could've asked for. He always presented things so that they were easily understood and never, ever moved onto a new concept without giving ample oppurtunities for us to ask questions or get things clarified. Also, I think the fact that he's young helps a lot: he's not clueless to the lives of young people. He grades fairly and doesn't collect homework~but always goes over it. I'd definitely reccomend him.

I thought Carlton was a great teacher. I loved his nerdy sense of humor and I felt comfortable approaching him with Stat questions, before and after class. He was always concerned about whether or not his students fully understood the material and for that, I respect him.

Dr. Carlton was awesome. He was a young enthusiastic professor who you could actually tell enjoyed his job. He explained the material very clearly and actually made it as interesting as it could be. Suggested homework problems were givene every day of class, but were not collected. He only collected about 10 or those problems once a week. So, if you needed the practice with the hw, you could do all of the problems, but if you already knew the material, you could just do the 10 problems at the end of the week and turn those in. There were 2 midterms and a final. They were very fair and he didn't throw any "curve balls". He used to tell us all the time that his goal wasn't to trick us, but just to test how much we had learned. Take him, he was great.

Carlton is great! He presents information very clearly and is lectures are very collaborative with the students so no one gets bored. This class is the first major class stat students have to take and he really does a good job of keeping his students interested in the subject (he probably doesn't want to scare anyone away). The grade is comprised of a participation grade and a homework grade, but mostly 2 written project reports and a final exam. He grades pretty fairly but is a little harsh on the project reports. I highly recommend Carlton!

Great professor, introduces statistics as a major in a very interesting and easy way. The challenge of the class is definitely the projects - they are very straightforward and you SHOULD get an A on all of them, but Carlton likes to be a little finicky with grading so things such as code done not in the most efficient way, tables not organized correctly will cause you to be docked points. Besides that, a very easy, fun, and informative class!

Dr. Carlton is the best teacher I've ever had at Poly. I was totally scared about taking Stats, because I'd heard how hard it was, but with Dr. Carlton, it was easy. He is truly and amazing teacher, probably the best I've ever had. He's super nice and will go through the stuff with you if you go to his office hours. He's also really, really good about returning emails on homework questions. He usually wrote me back within an hour! The tests are really fair and manageable if you go through your notes and the workbook. The test questions are the same difficulty level as the ones in class and in the workbook. Take Dr. Carlton if you want to understand and enjoy taking Statistics.

Dr.Carlton is an awesome teacher. He is always wiling to go the extra mile to help students out. He has review seesions before both of the midterms and the final that I highly recommend going to and he is always very helpful at office hours. Each test consists of about 5 problems so they're worth a lot of points, so be sure you know how to apply all of the major concepts covered in class. Dr. Carlton makles a boring subject bearable so if you need to takes stats take it from him.

I love him as a person. but my class didn't learn the material. our class averages for tests were never above 70%. we learn something new everyday and never really have time to absorb it. the tests are WAY TOO hard and we never have enough time to finish them. they also don't reflect the problems we practice in class. he wants us to understand this stuff, but when he asks "so does anyone have any questions?" you can't just say "yeah, can you repeat everything you just said for the past two weeks?" don't take this class if 1. you've never taken a stat class before. 2. you're bad at math. 3. you don't have spare time. as much as he tries to tell us "don't think of this as a math class" it is one. buckle up for a rough ride kids!

Wow this guy is the worst Prof. I have ever taken in my 4yrs at Poly!!!!! His tests are way to long!!!!!!!!!! and the problems consist of multiple parts that are very tricky to understand. The whole class struggled with his tests avg was below a 70%!!!! that alone should tell you the way you teach blows Carlton!!!! and going into office hours doesn't help either, even if you tell him you are struggling with the material he just seems to reassure you that everything will be "OK" and your grade wont suffer thats bullshit. He goes over the material in class way to fast. The hand outs and homework assignment problems are nothing like the problems on the exam, and the book he uses for 217 is looked down upon in the stats department, avoid this guy at all costs!!!!!! The work load in this class is overboard. And the amount of reading required for this class is ridiculous if you are enrolled in more than 12 units. please take my word do not take him he sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and if you do take him watch for his twitching right hand fuckin weird. Dr. Carlton does a fantastic job of teaching Stat 217. Each week you are required to download and print out his class notes off his website and bring them to class, but they are so well structured and comprehensive it's worth it. He gives very well paced and easy to understand lectures, and he is extremely helpful during office hours or even over email. He responds very quickly as well. Homework assignments are quick, one a night and once a week he collects all of them. Come to class and ask questions, an A is VERY easy to get. He's friendly and understanding, I'd recommend him any day.

Professor Carlton is an amazing teacher! I had a horrible Stats experience in high school and was dreading taking it. Carlton was great. There are 2 midterms, and 1 group project. As long as you get a good group and stay on top of the project, it is really easy. In class, you work off of notes that you print and he does a great job of explaining new ideas and what will be on the midterms. For the midterms, you get one page of notes and for the final you get two. This is a great class to take and I would recommend Professor Carlton to anyone who has to/wants to take a statistics class.

Carlty is the nicest/cutest man you will ever meet here. He has these funny little sayings and is always happy. He is always prepared and provides really good notes. the only bad thing is that you have to print out all the course notes and you probably kill a forest through out the course. But there are 3 exams and then the final. You get to fill up one sheet of paper of notes to use on the tests, so that helps a lot. The exams are pretty straight forward and you should get at least an B on them if you prepare. The final is pretty tricky though, so study hard. overall, carlton is a great teacher and pretty easy. Professor Carlton is an awesome guy. If anything can be said about him, it is that he really cares about his students and makes sure they have the tools that are necessary to succeed. He repeats stuff you have already learned by incorporating it into his examples, so you get a pretty good grasp on the stuff from the beginning of the quarter within a week or two. He makes himself incredibly available, with office hours on just about every day of the week to answer the questions you will more than likely have on the homework. For the ten week class there are six homeworks, two midterms, a final, and a group project. The homework always refers to the stuff you have just learned, but is still fairly challenging (NOTE: If you have a mac, then make sure you know someone with a PC or don't mind using the library, because you will a need a PC only program for the homework). All the tests are pretty straightforward and not overly difficult, the only challenge is being able to finish within the 50 minute class period. As for the project, you turn it in in pieces, so it is impossible to procrastinate and in the end does not require a whole ton of time spent on it. Take Carlton if you get the chance, he is a great guy and really cares about making sure people understand what he is talking about.

Carlton is very easy to understand and is a really great teacher. His notes are clear and directly resemble his tests. Weekly homework is a lot different from what you go over in class, which can get a bit confusing. His tests are difficult, but you're aloud to use cheat sheets (just study your notes). Office hours are really helpful! There's about 6 homework assignments (drops your lowest) 3 tests (including final) and 1 group project.

He only has two midterms and a final in which he gives you all the stats and only requires you to interpret it because "it's the machines job(computer) to do all the heavy lifting"-Matt Carlton. Dr. Carlton is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is amazing at explaining information. If you write him an email asking a question, he will most likely respond in a couple paragraphs describing everything in detail so you fully understand. He writes out study guides for the midterms and test questions are very similar to the notes you take in class, so it's all very fair. You have one large project due at the end of the quarter, whatever you do, don't get flaky teammates. It SUCKS. Dr. Carlton is just amazing. I totally recommend anyone who needs to take STAT 217 to take this guy!! He presents the material with such clarity, I couldn't have asked for a better professor. His class is very structured and organized, and his class notes are immaculate. His exams are extremely fair because of how in depth he goes into each particular topic. You have two midterms and a group project that's a big chunk of your grade, and the project is enjoyable if you pick good group members. What's awesome is when you email him a question, he writes back with such an articulate description. He really cares about his students and tries to make statistics interesting. He keeps the class engaged, and his class is pretty interactive. The homework assignments require you to put quite a bit of effort because they are graded very carefully. Besides that, 10/10!!! Dr. Carlton is an amazing professor and he makes statistics very relevant and easy to understand. He posts notes to Polylearn before each week of class and I strongly suggest printing them out and bringing them to lecture. They basically contain a bunch of examples that he thoroughly goes through during class and they ended up becoming my study guide before all the exams. There is a group project, but it is not too much work and he is very helpful in office hours if you have questions about it. His tests weren't super easy, but they were fair and if you attend class you will be prepared. I was dreading Stat 217 at first because I have always hated math, but because of my experience in this class I have actually decided to pursue a stats minor.

Matt Carlton is a friendly, helpful professor. The first thing you will notice about him is that he looks like a student! However, he really knows his stuff inside out, and can explain the material pretty well. He is very straightforward in most of his policies, although he grades homework WAY too harshly! He "randomly" picks like 4 or 5 questions from your homework to grade, and (at least for me) he would invariably pick the problems of mine that were wrong. However, the two midterms and the final were all extremely difficult. Each midterm only had about five questions, but each question had anywhere from four to ten steps, and this made the tests very overwhelming. Also, he doesn't assign too much homework - just enough so you can understand the material. If you have to take stats, I would definitely take it from Carlton.

Carlton is the best teacher in stat 251. He may not be the EASIEST but he most defintaely the best teacher. He is very helpful and will always answer any questions you have. Homework is not collected but quizzes and occasional pop quizzes are put in place of hw. The grade is composed of 3 midterms, a final, 10 quizzes, and a few group projects.

Carlton is very very clear and easy to understand. He relates all the lectures to eachother, and helps you understand concepts clearly. He gives 3 midterms and a final, as well as 10-13 weekly quizzes, where up to THREE will be dropped as your lowest scores. He is fair, understanding, and thorough. AMAZING stats teacher. TAKE HIM!

Here's the deal on what you're graded on: You will have 12 quizzes (that's roughly 1 per week if you take in the fall, the 2 lowest will be dropped, 10 points each), 5 team assignments (20 points each), 3 midterms (100 points each), and a final (150 points each). There are highs and lows to this class. First off, he is a good teacher, and does explain everything and will answer everyone's questions even if the same question was asked 5 minutes before. The team assignments are stupid. They are just a way for you to loose points because you will rarely get above 18/20 and their is not going to be anything remotedly as hard as them on the tests. Also, HE'LL GIVE YOU QUIZZES ON MATERIAL NOT ON THE MIDTERM, THE DAY BEFORE YOU TAKE THE MIDTERM. How lame is that? It sure is a good way to confuse his students. Overall, I just felt he rushes everything to much. Way to many quizzes. I'd rather see half the quizzes and have them be more indepth. One last thing, for the fianl he says that it is cumulative and tells you that "everything is fair game." Guess what happens...yup, you got it right. I wasted time studying past stuff and it wasn't even on the final. The final was like a 4th midterm, just a little bit longer. He's a decent teacher, better than most stat teachers, I guess it depends on how well you know statistics.

Carlton was a really good stats teacher. He went over everything very slowly and in a very organized manner.. There is homework everynight that is not collected. There is 11 quizes (drops the lowest). There are 3 midterms and a cumlative final. I totally recommed Carlton. He made Stats really simple and understandable.

Carlton is a very good professor and fully explains all of the material. He writes all important information on the board and makes sure that you understand it. Doing well on quizes mean nothing because they are not even close to the difficulty of questions on midterms. His midterms and final are incredibly difficult and he is a very tough grader! Overall though if I had the opportunity I would take him again.

Carlton is the best! Take him if you get the chance. He is so presise when he teaches the material and explains everything so well. He's a really cool guy and wants you to really learn. Take advantage of a great stats teacher like him! they don't come around so easily. He is pretty fair with the mid-terms and the final. They weren't too hard. If you study and keep up with the homework, you will do fine. You buy this big stats book that is needed for stats 252 also, but you don't bring it to class which is nice. He has you bring a separate stats spiral booklet that he wrote himself and you use it practically every day. He's the best teacher I have had at Cal Poly so far.

Cartlton does a really good job of presenting all of the information in a clear and understandable format, and he really tries to make sure everyone\'s questions are answered before moving on. Why I gave him a B instead of an A overall is because although he is good at teaching the material, his tests were much more difficult than anything else. I got almost all perfect scores on his quizes and studied for all his tests to where I felt prepared, but still had a really hard time and didn\'t score well, and his tests and final are a very big part of your final grade.

Dr. Carlton was one of the most knowledgable professors I have ever had. Not only is he organized, but he keeps us engaged in his class with his course notes that are just very helpful!! He is funny, entertaining and so knowledgable. Nothing is unexpected with him. He shows up to class on time every day, is well prepared with his course notes and activities, tells us when we're having quizzes and what material they will cover, creates really helpful study guides and is just perfect!! If I could take Dr. Carlton for any other class I would, but sadly I'm a CM and this is my only STAT class.

Dr. Carlton is young and that makes me think that he has an understanding of what it is like to be a student. He teaches a hard subject quite clearly and presents it in a straight-forward way. He doesnt assign huge amounts of homework, but at times can seem quite tedious, as all Statistics can. His tests are geared towards partial credit and that really saved my arse at times. His final was difficult, but i still pulled a B, works for me.

This guy is great. His lectures are very straight forward and clearly show that he is always prepared for class. He has a supplemental notebook that is required for the class that contains almost 100 pages of examples that he works out fully in class. The midterms are almost cut and paste from this notebook but take a long time to complete. The final was harder than i had expected because the two midterms were easy so study hard for it. There are weekly quizes that keep you current with the material that are very easy. The homework is collected weekly and is usually only about 10 problems. He also assigns recommended problems for practice that should at least be tried if you want to get an A. There was one day where he emailed the class after lecture and told us that he could tell by the looks on our faces that the lecture was not understood, so he went over it again in greater depth the next day. I thought that Professor Carlton was a great teacher. He presented the information clearly. He was easy to understand. Everyday, he would lecture and write notes on the board which were easy to follow. He also has VERY neat handwriting and writes big so the notes could be easily copied no matter where you are sitting in the classroom. I never went to him during his office hours but he always announced that he would provide any help that was needed and said you could email him anytime if you had any questions. Overall, I thought he was a great teacher and would be glad to have him again. The only reason why I got a C in the class was because I had a lot of distractions during spring quarter.

Carlton is an EXCELLENT statistics professor. His lectures are clear, his notes are clear, and his course book makes the class doable. Too bad the textbook is required for homework and stuff... compared to the coursebook, it's worthless. Carlton teaches each section of the course the same way, so it's very easy to learn what to expect from his course after about the second week. He gives weekly quizzes and assigns a bunch of problems, but only collects about half of them, which is really great: you can do extra problems on concepts you don't understand, but you only have to turn in a subset of those, so if you do understand, you can breeze through the homework. His tests are *very* doable, too: he crafts the problems just like his course book problems, and he asks them in parts, so huge problems turn into managable bites on the exam that you can do. One of the best parts: he will help with homework questions over email... at 10 pm... on a Sunday night. Overall, a great professor; if you have to take STAT 321, take it from him!

Although many people will find stats to be boring, Dr. Carlton at least does an excellent job in helping you understand the subject. He teaches by providing good examples and picks the right homework problems. In class, he goes over the homework problems carefully. He's also very helpful in office hours and curves the tests. Since the teacher is good and the tests are fair, the grade you get basically depends on whether or not you do the homework and understand it.

Carlton is a rip. Sure he knows his stuff and you will probably learn a thing or two, but it will come at a price of lots of your time. Just in this one class, we had 9 homework assignments, each of which took 9 hours plus, a project that was assigned 3 weeks before the end of the quarter which, if you were lucky took around 30 hours, and then on top of that you have 2 midterms and a final which he grades for complete thouroughness. I know this may sound like I'm just being lazy, but I did the work and am still complaining. If you want to learn something but work your ass of for it, go ahead and take him, but this teacher is definitely one to consider lightly.

I'll add my voice to the choir and say that Carlton is an amazingly good professor. He is *very* organized in everything he does, which is very useful when you're trying to follow his lectures. He can also be very strict and is not generous with partial credit. Carlton lays out the test in great detail beforehand, so if you're not paying attention then, he can be merciless during grading. The handouts are *extremely* important; bring them to class religiously, fill them in as he does, then review them carefully before each test. Go to EVERY study session. He tells you exactly what (and what not) to study and practically writes out the equation sheet for you. If you do all that, it's very easy to do well in his class.

One of the best math teachers I've had. Carlton wrote a course booklet which he teaches from, and it is much more clear and useful than the course textbook. He assigns homework from the textbook but I'd recommend also doing the practice problems from his course booklet to study for the tests. He tells you what problems were old exam problems, and posts full solutions to his course booklet on his website at http://statweb.calpoly.edu/mcarlton/STAT350/. Carlton explains concepts succinctly and lucidly, and is helpful in office hours. Midterms are taken under time pressure, so be sure you can do the material quickly. There is A LOT of equations and notes to remember, but thankfully he allows you to use notesheets (one on each midterm, two on the final). Final was long but doable. He gets an A from me.

Carlton is THE professor to take for STAT 350. He does an awesome job explaining the material. The best thing about his class is that he wrote his own course notes, which is awesome considering the book sucks. The only time I ever used the book was to do practice problems to study for the tests. The class consists of 3 midterms, 1 final, and 6 homework assignments. The midterms aren't designed to be too tricky; they are pretty straightforward. The final on the other hand was significantly harder than the midterm. The content of the class is that for about the first 6 weeks you go over basic stats stuff like any other class. The final 6 weeks are all about EE stuff and EE 228 stuff like Fourier, and convolution. Overall, a great professor. I wish he could've taught 228 because I feel like he understands EE stuff more than the professor who teach that class

He is very clear and straightforward with his lectures and never wants you to be completely lost. Office hours are really helpful as he will provide the most helpful of hints to the homework problems. He uses handouts that have examples of problems so that we can understand how the material is applied to real world. In addition, he talks alot about the Price is Right, Cal Bears, and the SF Giants. Tests are really tough as they include problems never seen on homework (although for most there is a trick to make the problem look like one that you recognize) but fair.
