Cano, Raul  

Cano is a poor teacher. He is unorganized, boring, and his lectures do not flow well. He is also a lazy teacher: his final exam was only 30 question instead of 50 because he didn't want to write a long test. He mumbles when he talks. This drove me crazy. When I went to his office hours, he acted like he was too busy to help me. I highly do not recommend this teacher for any course. I got a C+ in this course, but I don't feel I learned anything in lecture.

I do not think that Cano presents materials in a clear understandable way. The presentations he gives contains materials unessential to the tests and are also missing information. He is also hard to understand conceptually, sometimes verbally too. I thought the exams were demoralizing and we were all thrown off on test day. I also do not like how lab contributed less to the overall grade (25%)then it really should, lab was very valuable and most students did well there and could have balanced out their grades from lecture. Microbiology is an interesting subject, and if you want to struggle trying to figure out what the heck is going on (nothing follows the syllabus) and feel like getting a bad grade then take his class but otherwise I would suggest to take another instructor. Mr.Cano has a lot of passion for the subject, loves what he does and can make funny jokes but I am not in favor for his lectures and the way he structures his class grading and exams.

Very poor teacher. Exams were definitely NOT a representation of lecture or book material. He missed about 2 weeks of class and had sub lecturers, so it was difficult to know what material would be covered on exams. One of the exams was suppossed to cover about 8 different topics but almost all of the questions were from 1 topic that was covered by a guest lecturer - everyone assummed he was too lazy to write the exam himself. Some of the answers to exam questions were INCORRECT but he refused to change them or curve. Several times he would tell me to come talk to him in his office when I had questions and I would wait there for an hour and he would never show up. The only reason I got an A was because I was able to get 100 on everything else and I had to argue with him about exams questions that were incorrect or very poorly written. DO NOT TAKE HIM!

I agree with the previous review for Dr. Cano. While he obviously knows his stuff, his time and efforts are more driven toward getting grants and research money for the department. Not that this is a bad thing mind you, but students would be better off if he just concentrated on that. He has favorites in classes, that is for sure. If you are a student doing research for him or just like to hang out in Cano's labs, you will do well in his classes. I ended up doing research for him and it was amazing how his attitude changed toward me. He finally recognized me as a student rather than a blank face in class. I found his lectures extremely boring and his tests were a haphazard collection of questions written at the last minute. He cancelled a test once when he didn't feel like writing one. What is up with that?? The department is better equipped because of him, but they should give him the job as financial director for the micro department and leave the teaching to someone else. I had him for many classes MCRO 222, mycology, and cellular biology and he was boring for all of them. Grin and bear it.

I learned that if I were to take up hunting, I should shoot deer, not bears, because a bear will hunt me back if I successfully wound it. Fascinating! I didnt know that the key to production and operations management was so brutally simple!
