Dr. Burn was an excellent teacher. I seem to be telling you old information by saying that, but she made the class very interesting and easy. She will give you the notes and info you missed if you were absent, and she will try and solve any problem you might have with the class or her. she will print out notes or make study guides if the students want that. if you have a choice, choose her as your teacher.

Dr.Burn is a great teacher. Her lectures are very interesting and student involving, accompanied by over-head projector notes. The tests and quizes are multiple choice, on both the reading and notes, which are on the same topics. There is a short paper at the end. This is a great class, one in which you won't forget what you learned.

Dr. Burn was a great teacher! She's really a cool lady who knows what she's talking about. She explained everything about social psychology VERY well, using good examples to apply it to real life. Dr. Burn definitely knows her material, and she is very kind and sincere and thoughtful. I took her class as a freshman during winter quarter and, it was by far my favorite class. It was enjoyable coming, and I found the texts to be well integrated with lecture. Most of all, I enjoyed the opportunity to write papers and adapt them to personal experiences in my life, or rather explain and analyze them using social psychological concepts. I decided to write about some very heavy subject matter, some things I am reticent discuss with anyone, and I found her comments on my paper to be real caring and, it felt good to speak to somebody and receive that kind of feedback. It is a cold harsh world, but I feel things would be better with more people like her around.

Shawn Burn is definitely one of the better professors that Cal Poly has to offer. Her dedication to the subject along with her sincerity towards her students is a rare thing to find in any instructor. The course load is certainly manageable and doesn't take too much work outside of class. If anything, PSY 252 could stand to be more challenging. My only complaint is that sometimes Shawn made certain material seem too simple, or black and white, when in fact some of the concepts and studies could stand to be investigated on a more critical level. That said, Shawn is a quality professor that most students will undoubtedly enjoy.

This class was the most interesting class I've taken at Cal Poly. Just know everything from her study guides to do well on the MC midterm and final. They are straightforward, just like her lecture so take good notes. One five-page paper is due at the end of the quarter to reflect on what you've learned in her class and how it applies to your life. Make sure you understand and know every detail of her study guide questions, and you'll do fine on her exams.

Nice lady, very understanding, wants to help her students. This was a pretty easy class, I took it as part of my 22 units and it was easy. Two easy 3 pg. papers, and a midterm and a final. That's pretty much it. Easy material, she provides you with notes to copy down. A little boring at times because it recovers a lot of what you covered if you took PSY 201 or 202 and had Ryujin. Not a lot of reading either, the chapters are really short.

Lectures need more improvement. For a high rating professor, I expected a more lively class session. However, the typical day consisted of you writing whatever is on the powerpoint slide, zoning out as Prof Burn digresses a 4 or 5 minutes while she talks about an psych-related example of that slide, waiting for the next slide to pop up, and repeat. One hour of this would be fine, but two hours per day really gets tiring. What's also disappointing is that, because of those wasted minutes talking about the psych example (which are never important for the tests), we were behind two chapters and had to read about it ourselves. If you're reading this Prof. Burn, I recommend that you cut the time you take per slide because it's not particularly helpful to us. Good teacher nonetheless and the tests are pretty easy. Essays, you will probably fail unless you are a godlike writer, so even if you get A's on both the midterm and final, if you get C's on the essays, you will be stuck with a B.

Professor Burn is AMAZING! She is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had in all of the time I have been going to school. She made social psychology a joy to attend twice a week. The class was not only interesting, but also fun and exciting. Shawn Burn knows how to relate to her students and uses expletives when she thinks it is helpful to do so. She is also incredibly smart and has published multiple journals, so she knows what she's talking about! Burn tries to be as helpful as possible and is legitimately concerned with the well-being of her students. The tests can come across a little tricky but there are only 2 of them and they're not cumulative. I would take this class three more times if that wasn't a completely ridiculous thing to do.

I went into this class with very high expectations given the great ratings on here. While Burn is really cool and nice lady, I got so bored in her class. maybe it was because it was a bigger lecture hall so it was a little easier to get lost in the crowd, but it just wasn't that interesting. class is made up of 2 exams (one midterm and one final, final alone is 40% of your total grade), participation and 5 blog posts on polylearn. I did all of the blogs and for some reason got a low B total which I thought was weird. I went into the tests thinking I nailed them but I got a C on both of them. I don't know, maybe it was me but I was bummed I didn't enjoy and do as well as I thought I would.

If I could sum up my opinion of professor Burns in one word, it was probably be: "Meh." While the subject matter itself was somewhat interesting, Professor Burns weighs down the material by constantly going off topic, and all too often lets her own personal experiences manifest themselves into a general bias that is patently obvious. For example, she is supportive of the LGBT(Q?) movement, and while I am all for equality and alternative lifestyle acceptance, I don't pay $20,000 a year to listen to sermons about how gender differences are a so-called "social construction." She entertains even the most ridiculous of hypothesis from her students, and I cringed frequently as she used verbal acrobatics to avoid hurting the student's feelings even when they were completing missing the point of the concept. As far as her "academic prowess", which she so often boasts about, it's hard for me to believe that she is highly respected in her field with the kind of 3rd wave feminist/leftist issues she seems largely focused on. That being said, she wasn't a terrible teacher, and i do think that her heart is in the right place. I would suggest to her, though, that she removes her various agendas from her lectures -- its more obvious than you think, and it turns people off.

Honestly, if you enjoy extreme liberal views, and focusing only on the issues a liberal professor would focus on, go for it. If not, I hope there is another Social Psych professor for you. As far as a teacher Burn is adequate, she gets the lecture material across but not much else. She is going to tell you about every issue she has and every "struggle" she has gone through, but honestly, it seems very exaggerated. As a professor she is not good. She does not manage her classroom well at all and likes to micromanage every little thing, I feel like I am in a freshman high school class the way she treats the class. She also has her "Teacher's Assistant" and I stress the quotation marks. Really, Jon is like her little lap dog and pet, all his role in the class is to tattle if you are on your cell phone. He is supposed to offer a review session but I have not heard of any except for one. So many of the concepts overlap and the way she asks questions on her tests literally try to trick you. It is not a good test for knowing the content, but more so a good test of if you can pick the one she wants you to pick. It is not a hard course, but she is extremely boring. She tries to be funny and curse and talk about how she is the exception to this theory and this rule and how she is all accepting, and so on. But overall, the class is dull. Attendance is mandatory and she does check, but honestly, if you read the book, you may or may not do well, because it is her version of the theories not the books that she grades you on. Overall, she is enough to get by but a sad excuse compared to some of the other psych professors.

Dr. Burn is well versed in the subject and really wants her students to succeed. With that said, the lectures themselves are rather long and repetitive. Every class consists of simply copying down lecture slides. Luckily, the material itself is relatively interesting and relatable. Your grade is made up of 3 noncumulative exams (25% each), 5 blog posts (15%), and attendance/participation (10%). The exams are very easy to ace as long as you study the class notes and do the study guide. The exams are 50 multiple choice questions with about 35 questions directly from lecture and 15 questions from the textbook readings. Surprisingly, the blog posts are graded very harshly so spend an adequate amount of time writing them. As for attendance, missing 1-3 class sessions is fine, but if you miss a lot of classes it will hurt your grade. Overall, this class is topical and fairly easy to get an A in. However, there are a few downsides to this class. To begin with, Dr. Burn doesn't post the slides online, so if you miss class try to get the notes from a classmate. Moreover, she has a strict no electronics (no cell phone, tablets, laptops) policy in class. I usually take notes on my laptop, so this was a very frustrating rule for me. TIPS FOR GETTING A GOOD GRADE: spend a lot of time on your blog posts and EDIT them, allot 2 days to study for each exam (1 day to complete the study guide and 1 day to memorize it), only do the book readings from the study guide, and be aware that there are A LOT of "all the above" answers on the exams.

Professor Burn really isn't as great as many students have said here. That being said, she is an excellent lecturer. She can present a large amount of information clearly and in a humorous manner fitting for undergraduate students. However all of this is ruined by her two flaws: not sharing the slides and not permitting the use of laptops for notes. Her slides have a significant amount of information on them, so most, if not all, of my time in class was spent making handwritten copies so as to not miss out on any information. It really is a shame she is teaching in a format where students "learn" by making carbon copies of her slides. This style of teaching diverts focus away from her strengths, so unless you're a fan of frantically copying down slides with the occasional humor I would take someone else.

Dr. Burn is a fantastic teacher with a keen insight for individual student concerns. She is very open and easy to talk to and can be incredibly understanding, especially if you struggle with the course material (it can be very controversial at times). Her in-class discussions and special guests were motivating and inspirational. Class times is divided between lecture, discussion, movies and group stuff. The material is fascinating and I learned a lot, even when I didn't want to! She does have a slight tendency to repeat material from the book during lecture, but if you can put up with that, you're set. Dr. Burn, for the most part, is a great teacher. She wrote the book... yeah... I know what you are thinking.. but this is actually a GOOD thing. Out of the eleven chapters only a few are slightly boring, but the rest are so amazing. She is a very flexible teacher and is always asking the class how we wanted to approach the material or how we felt we learned best. The two projects/papers were easy, and she meant them to be. It is more what you got out of the experience which is important. First, you interview someone who has recently lived in another country and write a paper about what you learned and what you researched. Second, you do an activist project which was a BLAST! I think almost everyone in the class had fun with theirs, or at least those who chose a more creative group did. Her only major flaw is that she is always right. Every week you take a short quiz on the chapter you read (NO BIG DEAL). However, if you found a discrepancy between her freshly written quiz (maybe made five minutes before) and the textbook (which she probably spent a year or more writing) she would always claim the quiz to be right. It does not even matter if you quote the page number and read her the passage. Her answer will likely be,

I also made some very good friends in this class, if that is a selling point at all. How many classes have you been through, where you just sat there all quarter, did the work, and left? Well, not in this class. You will love it, I guarantee it. Hands down, the best class and instructor I have ever had.

Ok, here's the deal. I have never had a worse professor. Ever. She is the worst. She has no idea what is going on. Disorganized, Ignorant, Bossy, Demanding. She never let us learn anything for free. It always reflected in our grades when we made an error on a paper. I honestly learned nothing from her. She should be used as an example forhow to deal with extremely bad professors. She is the worst professor on campus. If you get stuck with her, it is really not worth it guys. I consider myself a decent student, and I have given a lot of great polyratings to teachers, but I can't see giving her anything other than the worse polyrating ever. She deserves it. However, nobody ever deserves to have to be in her class.

I had Shawn for both Social Psych and Group Dynamics, and I have to say that she is one of the best teachers I have ever had anywhere! She truely cares about her students and that they take something with them from her classes. She arranges her syllabus to have alot of quizzes and work, but no stressful midterms (and low weight final). She encourages students to be more then just faces to each other, especially in group dynamics. Never before did I look forward to sitting through a three hour class every time! I wish all teachers were more like Shawn. After four years, I can easily say that they do not get better then her. If you are fearful of working in groups like I was, don't worry. The atmosphere is very relaxed and supporting. If you have troubles, even if not school related, Shawn is willing to listen and help. If you want a memorable class here at Poly, take her. She has touched the lives of many for the better.

The class was fun. It was well worth taking. First class were I met every student, and made some friends, and still see those people in my other classes. She would let class discussion go to long sometimes and I would feel like I was wasting my time. But other than that the class was pretty fun.

Dr. Burn is an awesome professor. She really cares about her students and how well they do in their class. She is one of the few Professors at Poly to have the desire to get to know her students on a personal basis. She presents material in the class very clearly and she has a great structure in the class. She gives out 8 quizes throughout the quarter instead of giving the usual two mid-terms and a final. I would strongly recommend taking Dr. Burns for any class that she offers.

Everyone's comments are right on. I recommended this class to all my non-psychology friends. Best class I have ever taken. Half of us cried on the last day of class. It was awesome. You really get to know other people, and I am no longer afraid of group work or public speaking. The quizes made it less overwheleming, adn easier to find time to read the text. The low points final really helped take off the pressure. The papers really help youto look at relationships in your life. I did not mind workign for Dr. Burn in this class. You didn't even realize the class was three hours!

I took this class for my minor. Out of any class I have taken in my 4 years at Cal Poly this class is the one i will remember for the rest of my life! Dr. Burn is probably one of the most understanding, compassionate professors I have ever met. She genuinely cares about her students and isn't scared to challenge us. This class does have three 4-5 page papers but each one I learned a little bit more about myself and how others perceive me. Also, I have met some amazing people and friends that I will probably have for the rest of my life! Amazing class. Amazing teacher. Amazing friendships. Take this class if you have the chance!

Psy 351 Take Shawn Burn!! There is a difference between other Psy 351 and Shawns class. This is the class where you do a Community Service Project, such an awesome class project, to work in a group to raise money for a nonprofit!! The class is worth way more than a grade it requires alot of time and energy but is worth it. You learn a ton about yourself and others and how to work as a group. I highly recommend this class to all Psy, CD majors, and the software - computer guys, as well as anyone else who wants to become a better group member, get to know others, and make a difference in the SLO community.

Unless you want to devote ALL of your time and energy for the quarter on this one class then TAKE HAWTHORNE FOR GROUP DYNAMICS. Shawn takes this class (and herself) way way waaay to seriously. You have to spend HOURS outside of class time with your group community project. I didn't like groups to begin with and this class made me dislike them more. Hawthorne allows you to just do a few activities within a group and take the tests in a group. Shawn makes you write 4 different essays (ranging from 5 to 10 pages) and take 2 individual exams which are very detailed. She treats you as if you have no other classes to do work for. Yuck yuck yuck.

Shawn Burn is an EXCELLENT teacher. She really cares about the students, and tries her best to help as much as possible. Group dynamics is an intense class though, so don't take it if you're taking alot of other classes. Leave time to work as a team! Overall I wish i could take the class again. I loved it, best class at cal poly. Oh and don't use cell phones in her class - eek!

I absolutely LOVE Prof. Burn!! the class was definitely challenging but very interesting at the same time. There are two major assignments. The first is an annotated bibliography. Definitely have her check out your articles so she can make sure that they're what she's looking for. The second assignment is basically designing an intervention/ program based on applied social psychological principles. It's a lot of work, but it is very interesting. Prof. Burn is easily one of the kindest, most concerned professors I have ever had. She really likes to get to know her students so try to stop by her office hours. she's very honest with her students. she expects a lot because she knows that we are capable of meeting her standards. so yea, difficult (but interesting) class and a really awesome professor!

Best Professor!!! 1 test, 1 final. 1 Annotated bibliography- make sure you check your articles with her to make sure they apply the concepts she is looking for. Lastly, a group project- this is time consuming, but if you all work well together, it is not that bad. Dr. Burn cares about her students and keeps the class interesting by throwing in an occasional F bomb. She is great! TAKE HER! The tests are difficult, but do the study guide and you will be fine!
