Dave is awesome. As owner of Native sons nursery he knows his stuff, and has a practical aspect to his teaching is refreshing when compared to many in the landscape department who are so institutionalized. The class is only taught by him as far as I know, which is a good thing. Class consists of a couple tests, readings and the mega 150 plant test at the end of the quarter. Unlike many in the EHS department though you actually get to see the whole plant.

Great class. I wish Dave was in the LA dept. because he shure would improve it. The lecture was prettty early, but i always went to lab cause you would just go hiking around slo county and look at plants. awsome class..

Awesome teacher. You have to memorize a lot of plants but it's actually worth it. The guy is really cool, not to mention, he definitely knows his stuff and gives you everything you would ever need to know about california plants.

The Fross Boss. This man is the epitome of what a college professor should be. Extremely knowledgeable and involved, while also chill and easy to talk to. Takes you on a relevant field trip each week (as the lab portion of the class) to show you plants in natural settings/in his nursery, which is super helpful and how I remembered pretty much everything. Teaches practical knowledge through field study and anecdotes rather than memorization, which causes the memory of plants to come naturally. By far the best class of my college career.

No homework but reading; straightforward testing (no trick questions); tends to talk too fast in lecture, but does repeat important info. Cares about his subject; welcomes student comments and input. I would recommend this class in a heartbeat (and not just to EHS majors).

What a great teacher! Fross really knows his plants and he teaches them to you in a very non threatening way. He gives a big list like the other plant material classes but instead of making you memorize all of them week by week and cramming for the lab tests, he takes you on field trips all over the place (Montana De Oro, Figueroa Mountain, Monterey,Poly Canyon, Cuesta Ridge and others)and shows you the same plants over and over again in all different natural landscapes which helps you get to know the plants and remember them without all the added stress. I learned and remembered just about as many plants in this class as I did in plant materials but I had fun doing it and didnt want to pull all my hair out by the end. It is true that he talks fast in lecture and it is impossible to write it all down, but you really dont need to write everything down- we wants you to enjoy the class and appreciate the natives around you and if you listen and take light notes youll do just fine. His final for lab, which is the most points in the class is in his garden, so you get to see the full plant instead of a twig like you go in the other classes. Its a great class and I would recommend it to anyone- you will see the world of native plants in a whole new way!
