I think that Breitenbach made this class way too difficult for an introductory level course. He expected students to know a great deal about circuitry and to quickly figure out the complex workings of the lab instruments. I read the prelabs before coming to lab each week and I still encountered a great deal of difficulty in performing the labs (the explanations he gives about the lab in class is somewhat skeletal). The homework assignments (based on the lab) are ridiculously hard; even with some assistance I still had a lot of difficulty with the questions being asked. There are no tests except a final - which is open lab note book and somewhat easier than the homework. He does grade on a curve which helps a lot. Nonetheless, I felt overwhelmed and incapable of performing the labs due to a lack of instruction at an introductory level (his explanations are at the level of upperclassmen/grad students).

This guy is a straight-ahead no bullshit professor. His tests are real pains in the ass (averages were 60% and 47%), and his homeworks are some of the most time intensive problems you'll ever see....BUT, you will learn the material. Sure I'd take him again. Only complaint - he doesn't hand homework back, and he doesn't post solutions online. That means you have to go to the library and photocopy the solutions if you're serious about studying.

I am hours before taking his final and just thought I would write something here before I get my grade for the class. First off I would like to say that I don't think it matters what professor it is, the class itself is bullshit and personally I feel that it has way too much to cover for one quarter (yet sadly not enough for two). Anyone who has an easy teacher for this class IMO is simply not teaching you all the content. Part of the bad reputation for this class is not entirely Breitenbach's fault. Having said that, I think that his teaching methods are weak, and his ability to help students is mediocre. Does he know this material? Yes. Does he care if you do? Debatable. He is not Mr. Personality, but I'm pretty confident that if you asked him GOOD questions he will help you out pretty well. One time I got his O.H.'s wrong, came on the wrong day and he was there, but he wouldn't help me. Kind of lame, but maybe he was in the middle of something more important than his students. For those of you double checking, yes that last statement was sarcasm. He wants you to show up on time, he really hates laggers. Lecture runs the whole time. Don't even think about getting out of this class early. I wrote an average of 15 pgs notes a week. Tips for this class? Show up every day. Make this class your top priority over all others. I'm sure that he doesn't have favorites, but he does hate slackers and laggers. The book we used was terrible, and if you decide not to go to lecture and just read from that on the day you missed you're going to be in some deep shit. Good luck, the class royally sucks. I'm not even sure if he's curving, which is swell since we had an avg 55 and 41 on our midterms.

Lets just say that I am dreading my next quarter b/c I get him as a proffesor again. But if you do have to take him make sure you talk to him after class or during office hour to clarify his otherwise bland and sometimes hard to understand lecture. It is also a good idea to do your assignments with a partner and make sure you REALLY do them, because if you are familiar with his HW it will benefit you on his tests and finals.

by far the WORST professor i have ever had at cal poly. all he does during class is write notes non-stop. its really tough to keep up with him since he always stands in front of the notes he writes so that you can't see them. he will erase everything instead of moving to another board, so note exchange was commonplace after class. he doesn't use the book at all so the only study material you will have are the homeworks and their solutions. he does not post the solutions on blackboard for "intellectual property" reasons so you will waste your time checking out course reserves from the library while spending over $10 in photocopies. the homework solutions are extremely long, dense, and near impossible to follow (since each "step" usually has 5 hidden steps that you will have to figure out). he will use words like "clearly" pretty often to avoid explaining non sequitur steps. as a result of not being able to understand the homeworks you will not get enough practice with the material, and the exams will destroy you. this is my 3rd year at poly and i have never gotten less than a B in ANY class, but i am worried about failing this one.

Why is this guy still here? Terrible professor, he really doesn't know how to teach. His tests were absolutely insane and rather than curving, he simply failed the majority of the class. Everyone in the class was really looking forward to nailing him on the course evaluations but they never came. I would rather wait an entire year to take a class then have this ass again.

Never in 3 years have I completely failed a teacher on polyratings and I'm not just ripping on him because of the grade I got but because of the fact that he is the worst teacher I have ever had. Even if he gave me an A+ he would get the same rating with a little note at the end saying that despite how bad he is I still got an A. Honestly I haven't even checked my grade and if I do pull off an A or even a B I'll re-post saying something of the sort. The entire time in lecture we sat and watched him do proofs on the board then finally when it came time for examples he would half ass it and say that this equation is obviously this or that and skip steps. Also in his answers for the HW that we had to go to the library to print out he would skip so many steps that they were near impossible to really follow, and still were 11 pages long for 3 problems. In his office hours he's just as bad as in class and he literally kicked me out once to go get the answer key in the lib and come back with specific questions, then when I did he kicked me out again. Also he has last minute office hours at 6am before midterm and I know someone that got kicked out because he didn't feel like answering questions. His tests were designed for him to be able to do in an hour so most people weren't able to finish and they asked an insane amount of material. Also if you missed part A then you missed every part after that completely. Even if they were asked as separate questions. Also if you didn't fully explain yourself but got the right answer he still gave a big fat 0 if he liked. Maybe for classes where you have a stronger base on the material he's better but when it comes to starting a whole new type of material I say avoid him at all costs. I'm surprised his poly rating is as high as it is to the point that I think he posted his about himself so people wouldn't be scared to take him.

This professor is very difficult, but he is not terrible. If you take good notes and look over the homework solutions, you will do fine, if not well on all of the exams. The only hard exam was the first one, where we only were allowed one page of notes. However, if you know where everything is in your notes and the homework, the rest of the exams are doable. It is always best to just do the problems you know you can complete, rather than just starting a bunch of them because that will get you very little points, if any. As for lectures, they are definitely dry and he will talk to the board for 70% of the time, but everything is written out very concisely, which will translate well when you read it later if you copy down everything he writes. You probably won't have any choice to whether or not you can take Breitenbach, so just follow my advice and you will survive...

Worst professor at cal poly, possibly the world. My main issue was that he didn't provide enough material to study for the exams. He does give a lot of homework, but these are few in number, extremely dense, and don't really pertain to the exam problems. I would really prefer to have more practice problems that weren't as difficult so that i could become more comfortable with the material. The test questions are also really hit or miss. There are only a couple of problems (that you haven't had much experience with) and he is Mr. Scrooge when it comes to partial credit. Whether or not you pass the class is really arbitrary. Sure you could study non-stop (like I did), but it is more than likely that you will pass or fail the class on a fluke (because each test question is worth around 20-25%).

As a freshman at CP, I must say he is the hardest teacher that I have taken yet. Don't get me wrong...prof Breitenbach knows his stuff. However, as a lab instructor, I feel he does not fullfill his position adequately. The lab manuals we used were badly written (redundant, full of errors, etc.) and when you ask him about it, he doesn't give clear answers either. In addition, prof Breitenbach was out of the classroom ~50% of the time for my class, making the lab process harder. In summary, I don't know how he is as a lecturer. Perhaps he's better off when he teaches higher rank classes. However, from my experience, avoid professor Breitenbach if you're taking lower division lab courses.

Dr. Breitenbach is in my opinion one of the best EE teachers here. He explains things really well, and you learn a lot. When you come out of his class you know the stuff inside and out, even if you get a bad grade in the class. His tests were very very challenging, but his curve made it fair.

I think that he is the best EE teacher in Cal Poly. He explains materials very well. If you take his class, there is no need to buy the text (save your money). He expects a lot from his students (sometimes maybe too much). However, his class is extremely difficult but challenging. This encourages you to study very hard, because he has no mercy when it comes to exam time. I recommend people to take him if you really want to learn. If you just want an easy A, take someone else.

Jerome is a tough professor. He gives two hour tests in an hour's worth of time. Not only are the tests long, they are very difficult. He'll give at least one (impossible) trick question for each test. After doing a minimum of 10 hours of homework every week, he collects the homework and never gives it back, thus preventing you from getting any positive or negative feedback. Although he forces you to learn the material, you must ask yourself if all of this hassle is worth it. Incidentally, the homework isn't worth any percent of your grade and only helps if you are on the borderline between two grades. (Be prepared for a comment on your test such as:"You did it the hard way! +2")

Dr. Breitenbach is a very good professor, one of the best of EE in my opinion. He really knows the material and conveys it clearly. He did not let the class get behind, we went past the hour if necessary (most of the time). The homework was very difficult and deals mostly with theory, usually having us prove a theorem that was not gone over in the class. The homework only matters if you are borderline with your final grade. Tests were very hard and long for the 1 hour that we were given... pencils down at the top of the hour no matter what. Grading on the tests was tough but the average was below 50% in my class, so the curve helped. I would recommend this professor because even though he is very tough, you learn a lot, which helps you in later classes. (301 is a pre-req for everything else in EE)

Jerome is known to be the toughest EE teacher ever. He is not hard. What IS hard is the material trying to be taught i.e. EE301. I got 70% on all my tests aftering studying all the homework and lecture notes over and over again. But in EE302, I studied half as hard as for EE301 and got in the upper 80's. Never miss a lecture or not do a homework because everything is fair game on the tests. I missed lecture once because I had to study for another midterm and one whole problem was asked for that ONE day, thereby making me miss the upper 90's on the tests. A clear, deep, loud voice that you won't have trouble hearing and writes and draws neatly for notetaking. Amazingly funny guy outside of the classroom. Beware of his hyena laugh. AND NEVER EVER BE LATE FOR CLASS!!! If you do, sneak in as surreptitious as possible. And always simplify your answers i.e. factor, lowest common factor, (4)(0.5) is wrong whereas 2 is right. Extremely fair in grading... a lot of partial credit earned. Never leave a problem blank.

Birtenbitch, oops I mean that's how hard his class is. This guy will stick a plunger up your arse and pull it out just after you finish the final!! Maybe I'm being too harsh, maybe you will experience this for yourself, just post it here. In truth this prof. has a difficult class that he teaches effectively, most of the time. Don't get me wrong, I take this guy cause I want to learn, but it's no picnic. He gives you the material, however he doesn't always present the tools for the solutions. Britenbach is a Math prof. under that EE degree, he knows his stuff, so don't go to office hour with dumbass questions, you will die! Hints: Get to know him, SHOW EFFORT (important), a 25% on your test doesn't mean you're failing, do the homeowork, go to office hours with thoughtout questions, and study a little everyday.

You have all heard the stories about this guy. "He is the this really hard professor at calpoly" "His midterms are virtually impossible" "He is the best lecturer in this school" etc etc.. In fact, I've heard him referred to as the "killer B" However, he is completely overrated. He is difficult, yes. But I have had more difficult professors here at this school. His teaching ability is a little bit above average. He is not that great of a lecturer. He gives you material but he never really shows you how to apply it. You can always look in the book but he uses different notations then the book. So if you go back and compare your notes to the book, they are quite confusing and you may spend pretty much the entire quarter trying to distinguish between the two. His averages are pretty low which might imply that something is wrong with either: A) All the students who take him or B) The teaching. You pick. Everyone says they learn a lot from him. I learned just as much from taking other professors. So, take him if you must. I would rahter take another professor if I could.

LolZ...One of the most talk about professors at Calpoly. Just mention EE 301 and Breitenbach to your upper class buddies, and they will laugh at your ass! Here are the 411 for this class: 1.) The text book sucks, don't even bother buying it. If you do, try splitting the cost with your buddies since you hardly need it. 2.) HW are from him, not the book (Library will be your second home...trust me). It also counts as 0% of the final grade. 3.) If you can get your hand on his old midterms, it will help a lot. He usually have 2 out 4 similar problems on the midterm. It's still pretty damn hard. Average on midterm is usually under 60%. 4.) Take him for your lab, since he wrote the damn lab book. And it seems as if he is the only one that understand it. It's cryptic. 5.) Get in late and you will here some sad comments from him. 6.) Don't ever miss his lecture, even if you don't understand it. The notes will make sense later on. 7.) Fail his class and you can visit his wife in the AP (academic probation) office. And she ain't gonna be too easy on you either.

The material that Breitenbach teaches is done very well. Unfortunately, very little of it is practical. In both these classes, I learned a lot of theoretical info but he failed to teach us PIDs and state variables. If you have to take him, do it just so you can say that you survived (hopefully) his class. If anyone else is teaching it, however, I'd suggest taking it from them. You'll learn just as much and probably have a more practical understanding.

One of the most comprehensive EE professors I've taken at Cal Poly. Breitenbach is an excellent professor. He pushes his students and expects them to put in the work. If you are a slacker and don't work hard and spend lots of time studying you will probably fail (as you should). However, if you are a hard worker, come to class, do all the homework and study your ass off you will be rewarded. I think it should be required for all EE students to take 301 from him, as every other class you will ever take will seem easy in comparison (I'm now a graduating senior). I wish every professor took their job as seriously as he does. Work hard and you will be rewarded with knowledge and a meaningful grade.

Okay kiddies, don't fuck around with this guy... Breit's class is INTENSE, and you need to give it priority or else face the wrath of his evil tests. Honestly, I agree with his high ranking as one of CP's best EE profs, he knows the material and knows the applications in the real world. It's just that he teaches you more in a quarter than most teach in a year. I made the mistake of taking his 301 lecture along with a couple other EE classes and a GE, and my brain melted about 7 weeks into the quarter. DO NOT PUT BREITENBACH'S CLASS ON THE BACKBURNER. EVER. If you feel up to it you should try to take him merely because he will teach you more than anyone else can (I retook 301 w/ another prof and we covered about half as much. But I got a B the second time around)... But if you're gonna have a full quarter or feel like taking it easy, you should not take Breitenbach-- the only way to survive him is to study as hard as you know how...

Breitenbach is the best lecturer in the EE department. He has a simplified way to explain complex theories. The workload is fair, 1 assignment per week, but beware the problems are challenging. His tests are extremely difficult. They are always too long and cover strange twists and quirks of the material. The tests are designed to be almost immpossible to finish. However what seems sadistic during the quarter becomes fair when the grades are curved after finals.

Whatever grade you recieved in Breitenbachs class you cannot deny him the fact that his lectures are well prepared, organized, and clear. Yes he is extremely challenging and don't let anyone lead you to think otherwise or else you will enter his class poorly prepared. Breitenbachs attitude towards education is that it should challenge you to extend the upper bounds of your percieved limitations and that the only way to do this is for him to expect more out of you than you think you abilities will allow. If you bust your ass all quarter YOU WILL LEARN and YOU CAN DO WELL in his courses. READ his "How to be a student" essay to learn what he expects of you and what you should expect of yourself as an EE. PROS: Clear loud voice, fair curve, very structured lectures, excellent notes, assigns extremely challenging homework that will twist you brain for hours but will make you understand the material in the end. CONS: Seemingly unapproachable, low test scores diminish confidence even though the curve probably makes it a B, lectures sometimes get too general without any specific examples of how to apply the theory. About the course, the Controls book by Naresh Sinha is terrible it serves more as reference guide more than a textbook and examples are sometimes numerically difficult to follow with too many skipped steps. You really wont need this book as he will thouroughly outline the topics in lecture and even clarify many confusions in notation. Test average was about 62 and the test ARE designed to by virtually impossible to finish. Key in Breitenbachs classses are to bust your butt and not get discouraged.

tests are impossible. grading is unbelievably hard. He knew I as well as other students were graduating this quarter.... and he failed us. Three students including myself are required to come back next year to take the course over. We all emailed him and he does not care... just wished us good luck. Dr. Breitenbach is a horrible professor. He lectures like he teaches at a UC and does not provide any practical application. Be prepared for overhead lectures everyday. Look, just simply avoid this guy at all costs. He wrote his own book that is impossible to understand and will make no reference to real books so dont bother buying the book. HW's(which count for diddlyshit) are written by him and are impossible. The only good thing about the HW's is that they are written similar to how his tests look. But since no one will understand the HW, no one will understand tests. Avg's on the two midterms were 33 and 21 i believe(out of a 100). You'd think hed curve like crazy at the end, but in my class not so much. Highest grade he handed out at the end was a C+(just one though). I know because there were only 10 people in the class. The class was on POWER as Chinichian, so first day there was 35 people and by next week only 10. I think that nicely sums up how students feel about this ass.

If you are prepared for a challenge, take Breitenbach. Take him if you want to walk out of communications feeling like you really get the stuff, because you will study your ass off so hard that in the end you will finally really get it. You will feel uncomfortable with it the whole quarter, but that's okay, being uncomfortable is how you learn. Class averages were in the twenties on both midterms, and he showed us ways to solve the midterm problems that I had never considered/seen before, but that can be attributed to a half-baked education in the preceding topics. It would help if he showed more specific problem solving techniques either in his lecture notes or in class. Regardless, I recommend him to any EE who aspires to be something more than mediocre, and who cares more about learning than GPA.

First off I would like to say to the reviewer below, rude pompous comments are a good way to NOT succeed in the real world. You may think you're the next Einstein but more likely than not without social skills you will be nothing more than someone else ticket to fame. Anyway I found Brietenbach gives quite insightful lectures. Its not extraordinary by any means but still very good. I find he does not somewhat understand why people have problems with his class. His tests don't test what you should have learned, they test your ability to take what you have learned and apply it to new types of problems. Not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. So how would I recommend passing this class, and doing well? First off, no question about it DO THE Homework. It is exactly as hard as his midterms. He doesn't give you a huge amount of problems so some thought and you should be fine. Study in groups! Next LOOK AT HIS SOLUTIONS. After every week you should know how to do his homework. In terms of his tests I suggest reading the book or at least the main concepts AND THEN doing homework problems. It takes a HUGE amount of time but you will know you stuff at that point. Be aware high point quantity problems have something tricky in them, LOOK FOR IT. Finally realize that his first midterm tends to weigh toward fourier review more than modulation schemes. Keep that in mind but don't dare neglect any topic. Good luck!

In order to succeed in a Brietenbach course (I had him for 301 too) it is essential to have old homework solutions and old exams to help you along the way. In order to do well on his tests you must study your notes and know them inside and out as well as the homework. It is more important to study the many processes of the material as opposed to wasting time trying to understand the many twists he introduces in his hw problem solutions. Overall, I do feel it is somewhat of a reward to get a B or higher from him. He grades fair with his curve and lectures are very structured. Don't avoid him at all costs, he will be a teacher you will remember and be proud that you succeeded in his class (if you can!)

Okay, day one of class you are informed that the textbook assigned is flawed and he won't really be teaching out of it or assigning any homework out of it. Since he uses his own mathematical notation (which you are expected to know), he won't be bothered to use the same notation that the book uses (since he doesn't like the book anyway). So, basically you will spend 51 minutes per class period writing furiously to keep up with him, not really having any time to absorb what he is saying while he writes. If you ask too many questions (especially if they are too "elementary") he will be come a bit annoyed because you are cutting into his furious note writing session. Home work will be of his own mathematical design, mostly impossible to finish on your own (he wants to force you to come to his office hour for help for some reason), someone in the class will have solutions so you need to find them and try to figure out what the heck he wants you to do. Exams will be like the homework, impossible to finish in 50 minutes, when most of the class fails the test (average 20's to 50's) he will be disappointed and if the average is really low, he will be irritated, he will tell you that he expected the poor results because not enough people have been to his office hour. You will not learn anything practical in his class, its all theory presented in the most generic mathematical vague way as possible. Thanks for nothing.

You really have to work at a brisk pace to get any decent score. Oh and your score will probably be low. The class averages are in the 30's-40's. DONT LET THIS DISCOURAGE YOU. Do the Homework, look at his posted solutions and GO to office when you have questions. This man also has VERY little bedside manner but he does loosen up a little as the quarter goes on...but not much. You will learn a lot in his class if you are willing to put in A LOT of work and make it a priority.

The guy is genius, and there are no mistakes when it comes to him presenting the material. The homework he assigns wasn't a fixed portion of your grade; but rather, he used it to bump your grade up or down by + or -. You even get to bring the homework solutions with you to test day as well as the notes you'd taken during lectures. You will run out of time during every test, but some of the problems on the tests directly resembled those from notes and lectures. The key to passing this class successfully, in my opinion, is to photocopy the solutions he posts in the library, and make sure you completely understand how he solved all of the homework problems, every single detail. Also, just make sure you turn in most of the homeworks somewhat attempted. If you do these things, I can almost guarantee that you'll come out with at least a B after curving.

Took him a year ago. For undergrad he is terribly difficult, but now looking at grad school I think an ass kicker like him is the person I want to take. Just keep that in mind, he knows his shit, not for the faint of heart.

I took this class because I didn't want to graduate without having a course in digital communications (cell phones etc). I didn't want to take it with Breitenbach but didn't have a choice since I am a senior. Don't bother buying the required text for the class, Breitenbach won't be using it for reference (he used a couple of graphs from it that he modified to his notation, but were given out in class as handouts) or homework. Breitenbach really pushes his "learn the problem solving methods presented in class and homework" to be successful in his class, the problem is, that is the only place you will ever use them. For example, we dove heavily into the Max Quantizer analysis (class, HW and on the midterm), Breitenbach loves this weird obscure kind of stuff that you will NEVER use in real life, and requires a lot of ugly mathematical analysis. Also, if you use your calculator to bust out some integral on a test, you will lose points for not doing it long hand (integration by parts), he will legitimize his judgment by saying that not everyone has a fancy calculator. I also noticed that most of the favorable review for Breitenbach were all written on the same day, Aug 1st 2001, sounds awfully suspicious.

I was warned about him, but decided to take on the challenge anyway. I had to work my butt off, but I did learn a lot. You must do the homework, even though it is worthless. Many people I guess are intimidated by him, but he is actually very open and helpful if you pay him a visit during office hours. His lectures I found to be very engaging and interesting.

Thank god he is gone now. Poor ability to convey the material at a proper level. He is a good teacher for some one I believe, but not for most people.

This is the first C I have recieved in my entire life. I hope that says something to all of you out there watching their GPA. Do not take him--this class was a nightmare!
