Hey everybody! Stop picking on the poor lovebug Joe Biggs! SERIOUSLY! He has a lovely wife who works in Facility Services, at the front desk, Anita. She gives away free candy (no joke), and loves to talk about the Lord! And if you ever see Joe come to class with a shaggy beard, let Anita know, becuase she hates it when Joe neglects his beard, never giving it a trim. Email her : abiggs@calpoly.edu, if Joe ever comes to class with that shaggy beard. Anita will straighten him up.

His tests are ambiguous, trivial, and don't focus on the major concepts in presented in class. If he didn't grade on the curve, my grade would have dropped two or three places. Superior students received 50 and 60% scores on the midterms and final. Take someone else for this class.

Well, he shows up for the lectures. Not that he can speak clearly on management topics, but he's there. DO NOT TAKE HIM--TAKE BARBER. You will get an A, but you won't learn a damn thing (it's straight from the book).

Dr. Biggs' tests are very ambiguous. He goes off on tangents frequently when lecturing. Loves to talk about his days as a machinist and other odd jobs in Ohio. Doesn't know how to do hw he assigns, since he needs the solutions to show class how to do the hw. Tests are a combination of straight out of book and some weird facts he may find relevant and important (they usually aren't!).

I heard a lot of things about this course before I took it. However, I found Biggs to be rather straightforward and caring towards his students. All you have to do is read the material once and there is plenty of other opportunities to improve your grade.

To put it as simply as I can, this was the worst class taught by the worst teacher I have ever had. His lectures are absolutely pointless, and the class has no structure. He doesn't write the tests, instead counting on stundents to come through with enough questions to get him through. As a result of this (remember, he grades on a curve) the tests are laughably hard and ridiculous. Most questions are based on something Biggs said as an aside during one of his lectures. I may have gotten an A, but I am sorry I took this class.

If the students are smart, you can basically run the class. If you organize a plan, you can decide the entire grading method for the quarter, including dropping tests, etc. That's about the only good thing about his class. His lectures are POINTLESS. He mumbles, has this blank look on his face, doesn't answer students questions, doesn't do anything right. Take him if you want an easy A.

This class was a complete and utter waste of time. I didn't go to class for most of the quarter yet I still got an A. Granted it's easy, but it is extremely boring when you do have to go to class. The tests are relatively easy if you use the study guide and do the homework problems. Dr. Biggs could really care less about the students and their needs. If you enjoy learning, do NOT take this class. It was a big waste of my time and everyone else's.

Despite all the crap Dr. Biggs recieves on this site, I decided to take the class. He ended up being one of the funniest teachers I have ever had. He makes what is a boring subject, semi-interesting. He DOES care about his students, and gives them the opportunity to get the grade they want in the class. He questions come RIGHT out of the book, no tricking involded. I like him a lot and think he is a old school, laid-back, kinda guy. Don't listen to all the low blows taken on him, see for yourself.

Professor Biggs sure was an interesting instructor. I give him the fact that he tried to associate his personal machining experiences with the topics discussed in POM, but he has the worst style of teaching, in my opinion. He usually just walks in, does his monotone explanation of what POM is, then walks out. The tests are extremely hard, and you must be very dependent on the book, because he isn't very clear with his lectures or homework. He does let the class choose the grading scale, which could be bad, but could be good. Overall, it's one of those "easy A" courses, but if you really want to learn, I wouldn't recommend him.

Biggs is the worst teacher I've had at Cal Poly by far. All he talks about is how to cut off your arm in a machine in his lecture. Halfway through the quarter only about five people would show up for class. There's no point to ever go to class until you do your quality circle, everything on the tests is in the book, which is easy to read.. If he makes the test and not you, you're screwed, 'cause they're impossible. You're guarenteed to not learn anything, but you can get a B or A very easily. The curve makes it ridiculously easy to do good, and he lets you throwout a test. Don't take him though, it's a complete waste of money and time.

I hate to talk badly about people, but honestly, Dr.Biggs is perhaps the worst teacher that I have ever had. His lectures are completely unorganized and it is often difficult to even figure out what he is talking about. Most of class he spends babbling about random stories or any other tangent he feels is necessary. In lab he didn't really even seem to have an understanding of what was going on. He seems like a fairly nice person, and I've heard that he is a really easy grader. I didn't stick around long enough to find out though; I dropped Dr.Biggs class after the third week. For those of you business majors like me, who are looking to graduate in the next year, taking Dr. Biggs class is a huge waste of the limited time you have left to learn at Cal Poly.

I'm only writing this in Biggs section to inform everyone that Grosse is the man to take for this class. A lot of his old test are the same, and you really don't even need them because his class is so easy!! Homework is credit no credit, and he gives you 2% bonus for having perfect attendance. I bet 50% of the class got A's in his class...and oh yeah if you take Grosse and have good eyesight, be sure to sit in the front row during the tests (you'll see why).

Dr. Biggs has the potential to be an awesome teacher, but he is very apathetic regarding the learning of his students. He has had some great jobs in industry that totally relate to POM, but he fails to teach us what POM is. I took the class in Winter of '02, and his grading consisted of two tests equally weighted at 50%. If you like reading you will probably do well in this class because you have to do all of the reading so that you can teach yourself. The first test covered 10 chapters and the second test covered 7 chapters and a movie. The content of the tests consisted of obscure facts selected from the readings and POM problems usually taken out of the book as well. I would recommend Grosse, but if Biggs is the only one left, you can squeak by with a C if you just need to take the class to get it out of the way. By the way, this quarter he graded on a skewed bell curve: 20% A's, 20% B's, 30% C's, 10% D's and 10% F's. It kind of sucks that you know 20% of the class is going to get a D or an F, but if he didn't have a curve the majority of the class would fail. On our first midterm, the highest grade was a 59/75 and the lowest was a 20/75. Good Luck!

I didn't learn anything from this class. Mr. Biggs is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. First of all his lectures are about nothing, he talks about places he worked, his old jeep, and stories which have nothing to do with POM. He has two tests, a midterm and a final, thats it. His midterm made no sense, he had questions such as "What kind of car do I have?" on it. This midterm was on about about 400 pages of text, which was impossible to read. He is very mean and made a few racial remarks in my class. In the lab it seems as if he is going extra fast on purpose, so that we wouldn't understand how to do the problems. Several times he himself didn't know how to do the problems. The only reason I even pulled off a B was because he had a curve, since most of the class failed his midterm. He gave the top 20% an A, the next 30% B...but still I know several people who got a D in his class. Please don't take this teacher, he is not an easy A and you don't learn anything. Teachers make a big difference in a class and he is one of the worst.

The only reason you should show up is... You know what, don't even bother showing up. The only reason you would is to catch the one or two tidbits of information about his personal life that are going to be on the test; but you're going to answer the rest of the non-math questions wrong anyway. HERE'S A BIG TIP ON THE TEST THAT WILL REALLY HELP: During his office hours, at least a week or two before the test, ask him to bring a sample test to class (he won't let you be the only one to see it). He doesn't think to do this but he will if you ask him to. I asked, only it was the week of the test and the next class period was the test, so it didn't happen. He repeats questions from old tests, so if you get an old one, you'll be much more prepared. Also, try to memorize the homework problems. He really does photocopy them out of the book and changes a couple of numbers with a pen. There are usually only about ten types of problems for the testing period so this is easy. Guaranteed 50% of the test will be all correct. And another thing (just trying to be informative here), do those stupid extra credit presentations. They don't have to be good since he's not paying attention when you give them, so they're just free points. Don't put too much effort into the Quality Circles. Again he does not watch you do the presentation, so don't worry about the details. You know what, just take POM from Grosse.

Biggs is absolutely horrible. In fact, he is so bad, that it is just flat out hilarious when students start laughing at him in his lectures because of how dumb and off topic he is. For example, he spent an hour talking about how he went to a restaurant and his omellet wasnt very good. What does that have to do with POM? Basically he comes into class, talks about his personal life or whatever else he has on his mind, and then about a quarter till the class is over, he goes over the problems, but so incredibly fast, everyone starts laughing because no one understood what just happened. We will be doing problem 1, and then all of the sudden we notice he's on number 5, and everyone is like "what the heck?" The saddest part of it all, is that students, including myself, ask him throughout the class to go over the problems, but he refused to do so. He keeps on lecturing, or should i say talking, about random tangents that have nothing to do with the class. He is very mean to students sometimes, and often rude. He doesnt make since a lot as well. For instance, he tells us to turn off our computers, because he says it makes the room hot, and immediately starts the problems, which require the computers. It's like he forgets what he just said. Or maybe is just not mentally there. I dont know. All i know is that you wont learn anything in his class, at least not from him. You'll have to teach yourself. Good luck.

I too am going to have to vouch for Biggs' gross inadequacy as a teacher. Why is he here? I would much rather have any one the the students teaching the class - at least that way I would learn something while I was sitting in the classroom for TWO and a HALF hours. Yeah, imagine that. He's totally racist and completely ignorant of how offensive he is, and really does not care about his students. I went to his office hrs once for help and could not get myself outta there fast enough. In class, after mumbling about absolutely nothing of relevance to POM for an hour or so, he starts whipping out these size 5 font transparencies on and off of the projector as if he were dealing cards or something. And then we ask him if we can see it for two more seconds (on top of the fleeting two he already graciously gave us) and he refuses telling us "you know what this says." Does he want us to fail? Because then he really would be earning his salary.

Ok, we're not supposed to use expletives, but this guy is so fucking bad he leaves me no choice. I'll elaborate. Our text for this class comes with a software bundle that he completely disregards. Instead, he uses an unbelieveably poor software program that mixes up terminology and spits out answers different from the homework solutions. It would bearable if he demonstrated at least a peripheral understanding of the additional software. He does not. The lecture section is a mix of anecdotal and colloquial dreck that only makes this material even more difficult. What is most frustrating is the fact that this class could be amazing! The text is actually very solid and thorough. Production and Management systems are integral to any business person. Given a motivated, expert instructor, this class could become a benchmark for the business program. Instead, we get a bloated, tenured disaster that couldn't teach a fish to swim. Joe, if you read these, you need to know that you are doing your students a gross disservice. Either change your teaching philosophy, or for God's sake, RETIRE!!!!!

I am really upset that this allegedly great institution is keeping a worthless piece of crap like Joe Biggs. I have never seen a more apathetic, worthless, mindnumbing pathetic excuse for a teacher or human being. Generally I am pretty generous in my polyratins reviews, but Biggs has dragged me down to a new low. I was honestly interested in POM before I took this class, but Biggs managed to suck me down to his own level. I really think that I became stupider ever minute I sat in his class. His lectures are completely worthless and I have never seen somone who is such a diservice to his students. First let me start by saying that this was my VERY first Business class at Cal Poly and I was very dissapointed. Professor Biggs has no clue about the real world and anything to do with Business. His grading policy is completly ass backwards but just turn in lots of questions for the tests and you will be fine. Don't ask him any questions about real life companies because he doesn't know of any. One student asked him about Amazon.com and he claimed he had never heard of them. However, students can write 20-25 questions that he will put on the test. I suggest to you write up these questions if you want to pass the tests. Also, he allows you three extra credit articles to present to the class. Do the articles because they take a few minutes to write up and then you talk in front of the class for about 1 minute. Dr. Biggs doesn't pay attention to you--easy extra points. If at all possible, avoid taking Dr. Biggs--it is a waste of money, a waste of time. I didn't learn one thing in this class. Biggs is probably a great guy, but so is my senile grandpa. He rambles on about god knows what, probably some dated information about his job experience with some trucking company. He has a VERY hard time keeping his lectures structured. He covers virtually none of the text material, which accounts for almost 70% of the test material. Attendance is a joke, and even when people come most of them end up playing solitaire or instant messenger, etc. As for the tests themselves, they are worded ambiguously and are overly vague. Even when you can figure the right answer, he often messes up the key so that you get it wrong anyhow. You can get a decent grade by studying last year's tests, or just cheat your way through it. He lets you use the computers for the lab problems, so just put everything you need in an email and open it up in class. To sum it up, take someone else if at all possible.

Professor Biggs isn't really as bad as everyone says he is. Its just that POM isn't an interesting subject, thats all. You could totally tell that he is trying to improve his ways of teaching, so give him a break. As long as you do the reading assignments and understand the computer concepts (which shouldn't take more than two hours of learning before each midterms), you'll do fine. POM is very much like OB, they're both self taugh courses. Its the hard teachers that you actually learn from, not the easy ones who assign grades based on the student's popularity in class.

Dear Cal Poly, I am seriously questioning your ability to provide us with quality professors. Joe Biggs is a joke and should not be taken by any student at this school. The students will not benefit at all and they will probably leave the class with a distaste for POM. He does not present information clearly. He will not listen to questions. He schedules his office hours between classes. (10 minute breaks between his three classes on mondays and wednesdays)How thoughtful of him. He is not approachable and mostly talks to himself. He does not explain things clearly. His tests are written by the students (20 questions from the students) and 20 from the book test bank. His tests are hard and of our two tests the hisghest score was an 80%. Study the turned in problems from the students and hope to god you can get half of the text book problems correct. Biggs is by far the worst professor I have ever had bar none. I am sorry to hear that he has a spot secured becuase of his tenure. He has not earned it and should not be in the profession. Cal Poly, please just sit through one of his classes and see how much of a waste of money he is.
