This teacher is the worst teacher I have ever had. I went to class for four weeks then gave up on her and only read the textbook and did the practice problems. Not only does she present material in the most confusing manner possible, she answers questions in the same exact way. (Also, you have to pay 100$ to get the online textbook and homework?) For example, I did ok on the midterm and final and got 90%+ but I knew the material back to front, the only reason I missed questions was because there were two ways to interpret the way she worded the question and I did it in the "wrong" way. Again, I'm not writing this as a vendetta review I did fine, I'm writing this to let you know that if Doremus is your only option, avoid this shit at all costs, save yourself that 100$, and punt this class until you can get a semi decent teacher instead of this poor excuse of a professor.

*I would not recommend her as a professor for “Microeconomics.” However, keep in mind she is a new to teaching to Cal Poly. Her class consisted of Participation (5%), Online Aplia Homework Assignments (15%), One Midterm (35%), and a Final Exam (45%). Though she comes to class prepared with her lecture notes and motivated to teach, her lectures are difficult to follow. Her lectures are very surface level and though in theory they are there to supplement the online homework assignments and reading, the two are not suffice for preparing you for the Midterm and Final Exam. Her class requires you to do a fair amount of self teaching. Nonetheless, just like any class, if you are willing to put the work in you’ll do fine in this class.

I would NOT recommend her. while she is a nice lady, her lectures are awful and hard to follow. The online and homework and lectures do not prepare you in any way for her tests. She lectures on something completely different than the homework. There is on midterm and a cumulative final that basically make up your grade. However, she did curve the class in the end, which I think saved a lot of people from failing. Better off learning from textbook than going to her class.

DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN. She is smart and knows that she is talking about, but she has difficulty overlaying the curriculum to her students. She has a hard time figuring out what our difficulties are and tends to speed through her lectures. She ends up curving the class, since the average grades on midterms and finals were super low, but would still not recommend taking this woman. She also kind of has a stick up her ass.

She is a new professor, and her lectures showed that, but overall she was pretty good. She is clearly smart and knows what she is talking about. Sometimes it was hard to follow, but if you actually do the homework (not just copy the answers from friends which most people did) and go to office hours you will learn a lot and do well. I got the impression from friends that not very many A's were given out, which sucks. If you show up to this class expecting an easy A, you will be in for a surprise. I think the others complaining about this class thought it would be super easy, since its a freshmen econ class and then got upset that it wasn't. Bummer for you, sometimes school is hard go cry somewhere else. If you take this class just ask questions, actually do the work and go to office hours (she will take her time to help you understand a lot). Do that and you will get a decent grade and maybe accidentally learn something.

She was not very helpful in class, often confused herself by her own notes. This in turn confused the students. She only had office hours one day a week for 2 hours, sometimes it would be impossible to even get chance to ask her the questions that I was confused on from the last lecture.

Doremus is very enthusiastic about what she teaches, however, she is a very average professor. She IS new so keep that in mind. She is a very nice person, but she has difficulty explaining concepts to students. Takes her lectures right off of the textbook with the same examples but with a slight twist. Oftentimes she would confuse herself and skip a whole concept. This class is a lot of self-studying. I skipped class several times and I feel like I never missed anything that important that I would have taught myself anyway.

Jacqueline Doremus is not a very good professor. She's extremely smart (undergraduate degree from Stanford and PHD from Michigan), and she has done some incredible research in the Congo. That being said, she has no idea how to teach an intro level micro class. First of all, she makes you buy an Aplia account which is over $100. There's online homework due every Friday at 5pm. You get three attempts for each problem, but she takes the average of the three instead of the highest score. I found that it was pretty difficult to get above a B on the homeworks (which was frustrating because it would've been nice to get some freebie points to balance out the midterm and final). The homework was pretty tedious and didn't even really relate to the material on the midterm and final. I usually had to dedicate about 5 hours every Friday to completing it. Also, it didn't really relate to what she talked about in class. The final grade consists of (roughly- I didn't remember exactly)- 5% participation for online experiments (sometimes she would hold these experiments instead of class which was nice because we could tune in from anywhere, but on the other hand they were completely pointless and unhelpful), 15% Aplia homework, 35% midterm (multiple choice) and 45% final (also multiple choice). The tests literally didn't relate to the lectures or homeworks, and I didn't do well on them. They were NOT easy. Luckily, she curves the class a lot at the end. I'm guessing she got some negative feedback about this class, because everyone I sat around felt the same way. She seemed like the kind of person who would be really receptive to feedback, so hopefully she'll only get better from here. I think she's one of those teachers who is too smart to be teaching such a basic class- she doesn't understand that most people need to spend time on "simple" concepts. If she works out the kinks of the curriculum and relates her lectures to the tests more, she could be a really valuable teacher! But for now, steer clear.

Contrary to the other reviews, I enjoyed Dorms as a professor. She is a very nice person and will do anything to make sure you understand the material! I was very active in class and asked a lot of questions and it was very helpful. She wants to see you succeed, I recommend taking Doremus. Be prepared to put in time to study, bring questions to class and talk to her in office hours.

Even though she really sucks at teaching and explaining anything, take this course! Honestly go a C- on the only midterm. But studied my ass off using Aplia (she makes you buy it for $100) and got an A on the final and an A- in the class. Really not sure how, but if you put the effort in on your own, you can do well. Plus she gives practice tests. Just don't rely on her lectures. It's really all self-taught, but she is very sweet and wants you to succeed.

I actually liked Doremus. She's a pretty spunky lady and knows her stuff. I didn't have a hard time in this class, and found it more or less pretty easy stuff. I did take AP Macroecon in high school so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I hear if you take Econ 222 first (Macro) it makes this class a LOT easier. Do the Aplia online HW, pay attention in class, and do the practice midterm and you should be fine. She is a fair grader and does an overall pretty good job teaching.

This professor was so boring. She would get confused by her OWN notes, and when asked a question she would never actually answer your question. I hardly went to class (it was in the bus silo which had too many people to focus). She got mad at us for doing poor on the midterm but shouldn't that be a sign her teaching isn't the best? Plus she uses a textbook online which just wasn't a good fit for me personally.

Lecture can be hard to follow and definitely boring at times but Doremus gives you everything you need to succeed. She sets up homework, readings, and additional practice problems for you and is super helpful during her office hours. She is not the best lecturer but she gives you the resources you need to do well. She even gives you 2 full practice midterms and finals to help you prepare- and her tests are almost an exact copy of the practice ones she makes available before.

At the beginning of this course, this teacher said to ignore these ratings because it is mostly students trying to rip on her. I will do my best to not do that, but instead give a respectful evaluation. If I could ask this teacher any question, it would be: "Why would you use a CHALKBOARD in a classroom of over 100 students?!" It is the 21st century and every teacher I have ever had (besides in math classes) use PowerPoint to present information. On top of that, this teacher has sub par handwriting, which causes students to be confused with what words she is writing on the board rather than trying to understand different concepts and theories. For this reason, students fall behind and get lost in her explanations. Then, a student will ask a question and she will openly embarrass the student by saying something like: "I just explained that!" However, this teacher is very smart and knows what she is talking about. She can just be intimidating towards students, which is why I never raised my hand personally. This class is manageable and you will do fine in it, but all the ratings are pretty much true.

Doremus initially comes across as being extremely knowledgeable about Econ. However, as the quarter progresses you soon begin to realize that she has little ability to answer questions that aren't written directly on her notes, and when a student asks a very basic question that she isn't able to explain she'll find a way to dodge it completely to save face. The first midterm is basically review of Marco Econ, and then the final is a huge test worth 45% of your grade and covers nearly all of micro Econ. Unless you spend a ton of time studying on top of assigned work you will not do well in this class, and she definitely won't make an effort to reach out and help you. Additionally, she makes you buy an Aplia account, a website which provides all your homework, grades, practice tests, etc (basically, she doesn't have to do any work, just has students pay for a site that does it all for her). On top of that, unlike other micro Econ teachers, she does not allow a notecard cheat sheet on the final, which puts you at quite a disadvantage compared to other students taking the same course with a different professor. Finally, she always mentions a "curve" but never tells you how much it's worth, and with a final worth almost half of your grade you never have any sense of what your grade is going to be until it's over. The poly ratings don't lie.

This class is honestly just annoying as hell. I had the giant lecture so no attendance was mandatory and definitely not necessary to do well in the class. The whole book and all the assignments are online. She does not present material clearly and is just an annoying person in general. I went to class literally 4 times and got a B so if you've taken macro and did okay you'll probably be fine for this class too. Wouldn't recommend taking her but if you're already stuck in her class just read the book and retake the assignments until you get an A on them and you'll be fine.

DONT TAKE DOREMUS. Overall she's an intelligent nice women, but her lectures are all over the place and she would sometimes have to completely reteach a concept because she messed up the first time. You will leave class more confused than before. She started the quarter by using the white board for extremely unorganized notes, then transitioned into posting half of her power point slides online, then posted all her slides online for two lectures which helped, but then went back to the unorganized whiteboard. Her online homework assignments were tedious and if you didn't realize what the question was asking you would have to redo the problem three times. You end up having to read the book and teach yourself most of the material. THIS PROFESSOR SUCKS.

Idk why you all are hating on Prof. Doremus I actually really enjoyed her as a teacher. If you show up to class and pay attention (keep in mind she lets you out 45 minutes early of a 2 hour class) you won't have to study all that much for the midterm/final and you will get at least a 75%. There's only one midterm and one final (no paper or anything). PLUS if you do better on the final than the midterm she REPLACES the test score. I would say take her 50 student lecture class because then people ask questions more frequently and you don't look like a dumbass when you ask a question. Overall I thought she was a great professor, who very clearly explained the material with real world examples.

I honestly hate econ, I think it is really boring and I hated going to class. That being said, I don't understand why Doremus has such low ratings. Her classes were a little boring, but when people asked her questions she did a really good job at explaining the answers. If you work hard, an A is possible. I did not work hard. She has a midterm and a final, and participation quizzes each class. The quizzes are two questions and not that hard. She gives you a lot of materials to prepare for the midterm and the final, and she says at the beginning of the year that the second half of the class is a lot harder than the first, which is accurate. The weekly assignments online are really annoying, but if you go to the business tutors they help out a lot and it isn't as bad. She is a little quirky, but overall she isn't a bad professor. I would take her again.

Professor Doremus seems like a knowledgeable person but she certainly isn't. In this class you have to purchase an online textbook for 140 dollars. Honestly her lectures are so useless and confusing that it's better if you just spend this time learning on your own (I did). The class itself is moderately difficult. If you study hard on your own, you should get a B or higher. IF YOU CAN GET ANOTHER PROFESSOR, TRY TO GET THEM. Professor Doremus is a terrible teacher, she just lectures all class without really detailing how to do problems. Also her lecture has nothing to do with the exams she gives. She was also gone more than half of the quarter for classes and we were supposed to learn from substitutes that were terrible at teaching the class. I know that this is a 200+ class of students but Economics is not a course that a lot of people learn throughout their educational career. Overall, she was not qualified to teach this material in my opinion. Since she was gone for a lot of the classes she didn't review any material rather she just gave us an opportunity that she will replace our midterm with our final grade. I would have liked it if she just thoroughly taught the material so students would be prepared for the next Economics class. Also all her textbook and quizzes are online which does not help considering we all have to pay $100 for the online textbook but it does not correlate to her lectures.

Professor Doremus gets a lot of hate, but I actually learned a lot in this course. That being said, I read the book and did the practice problems before every class, and I'd say this is important if you want to do well in this course. She moves through her slides super quickly, but gets her slides from the book, so if you read and take notes before class, you won't need to take notes as much during class and can focus more on applying the material to the many examples and practice problems she provides throughout the presentation. She provides previous midterms and finals as practice for the two tests, and some of the problems from the past tests are actually on the midterm and final, so definitely do those. However, I know students who prepared for class and tests in the same way as me and didn't do super well in the class so it comes down to how well you understand the material. She has office hours and two tutors and there are always people in the class who really understand the material, so seek those people and help and you should be ok.

Professor Doremus is the laziest professor in terms of teaching style I have ever had. She simply reads her powerpoints to the class, almost word for word. She also requires you to pay $100 for an online textbook. You can't even opt out of the book, since mandatory homework assignments must be turned in via the website you purchase it from. She posts these same powerpoints online, so save yourself 4 hours a week and just read them from home. I passed her class and although I am unsatisfied with my grade, I can confidently say it was not earned by laziness on my end. I studied harder for her final than any other, spent 25+ hours in the lib over the course of three days, with 6 of these hours being guided studying with tutors. I redid every aplia assignment I failed, and did nearly 200 practice problems in preparation for the final. I felt confident, and went into the final expecting to improve my grade. I was instead met with terms I had literally never seen before, overly complex problems, and deliberate answer traps (i.e. A) graph B B) graph C C) graph D D) graph A.) It's like she doesn't even want her own students to pass. Overall, a terrible professor who does a poor job of preparing her students for the finals. Luckily I passed the class, but I truly believe with any other professor I would've earned at least a B.

Doremus is extremely bright and knowledgeable of her subject, but her lectures are pretty weak. Being that this is my first quarter I feel it's mostly due to being in a lecture hall. If you end up getting her and want to do well, here's my advice. Highly suggest reading the lesson and doing the practice problems before going to the lecture. Was able to understand the lessons by doing that and using her actual lectures as an extra tool to fully understand the concepts. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. While I did just say that the lectures are pretty bad they are still important in making sure the concepts stick and reintroduce them in different ways you might have not thought about. The 3 things that really count for your grade in least importance to most are the homework on aplia, midterm, and final. I was able to get a 95% or above on all the HW's , these are pretty much free points and it's important you take your time with these to make sure you don't lose points through silly mistakes. The practice problems also help you solve the hw problems. For the midterm and final Doremus will post practice midterms/finals about a week before the exam date. It is a must to do these, not just once but at least 3 three times over, if you want good results on the big exams. I really think the best way to do well on her big exams is to study how most people are trained to study the ACT or SAT, by taking a bunch of practice exams and drilling concepts and types of problems they have issues with. The big exams are all multiple choice and the questions are really formulaic for each concept. So if you keep drilling the practice exams and work on fixing the type of problem or concept you are struggling with, I think you will be able to do well on the actual big exams. Through this I was able to get a 94 on my midterm and 92 on my final. This class isn't easy and your grade is ultimately going to be whatever effort you put into the class. While that advice is thrown around so much, your grade in this class is going to be dependent on how much you time you spend doing the practice problems and doing/re-doing those practice exams.

To be honest, I truly did struggle in this class, even with getting help outside the class. Professor Doremus is a very nice lady and seems like a cool person, but when it comes to teaching Econ, she isn't very good. Each class was often a waste of time if you pre-read before each class. She taught from her slides quite often and would just parrot what the textbook said. On top of it, it did not help that she would cancel class or get subs for lectures because she had some health issues. I feel bad that she was going through a rough time right now with her health, but it was very annoying being taught 5 different ways. Definitely unimpressed with Professor Doremus.

I had Doremus during fall quarter and, like a lot of the other reviews suggested, she missed quite a few lectures early on. She explained that she had gotten sick several times and that she usually never misses class. We had substitute professors on most of the days when she was absent. Most of the classwork itself (reading quizzes, hw, etc.) was done through Aplia, but there were questions we had to answer on polylearn (an attendance question at the beginning of lecture and a short, 2-question quiz at the end). I thought Doremus was a very good professor. She was kind, professional, and put lots of resources online for us to study from. If you did the practice midterms and finals she put online, then you were well-prepared for the actual tests. I learned a lot from her explaining how to interpret the graphs and solve problems. She gives example problems for the class to do during lecture, and she goes around helping people who are stuck. I didn't have to do a whole lot of work outside of lecture, and I actually enjoyed learning econ from her.

Doremus is not the best professor I have had. You could totally get the same grade by just doing the reading and never going to class. I studied hard for the first midterm and got an A, did all my online assignments with a grade 95% or higher, and participated in the couple of "lab experiments" we did outside of class. The final was MUCH harder than the midterm and I ended up with a B+ in the class...salty. Her class is a waste of time and if you understand the reading and are doing well on alia assignments I wouldn't even bother going. I would not take her again.

She basically just reads off PowerPoint slides. She does not elaborate on topics very often and going to class is a waste of time if you read the textbook or even just her slides on PolyLearn. Okay she is a good teacher. Plain and simple good, nothing special, but not the worst. The lectures themselves were not great and I learned mostly everything from reading the textbook and redoing practice midterms. During class she was unprepared more often than not and on the final she forgot half of the test... There was not one time all quarter that I looked at the PowerPoints because frankly they confused me even more. She is very enthusiastic which makes it easier to try and on focus on what she is doing, but most of the time her explanations were confusing. The homework was not hard and the midterm and final will not be difficult if you study hard a couple days in advance. This is a good class because it teaches you how to self-grind and take the initiative to succeed. In my opinion I think she is learning from her mistakes and is slowly getting better as a teacher.

Doremus will also replace your grade on your midterm with your grade on the final if you do better I got a C on the midterm, even though it was really easy, but I was able to snag an A- on the final bc I went to class the last half of the quarter and grinded out both the practice tests she gave out which really helped for the final. I would 100% take a class with this professor again. This class was incredibly fast paced and heavy with new material if you didn't take Econ in High-school but she did her best to teach the 200+ kids in the class (took it in the silo). She was very helpful when I asked questions. Homework was given a week in advance and my average grade was an A. Midterms were hard, but she provided past midterms and study help through the portal. If anything, this class takes longer than it should have to because a lot of kids in the class mess around and talk during her lecture. She is incredibly educated, and if you really want to excel take advantage of having her.

Professor Doremus has COMPLETELY changed this class from her ratings above. Even throughout this quarter she has changed certain policies to help her students, for example she now gives us a skeleton sheet to help students pay attention in class and follow the lecture and giving us longer breaks. In addition she now gives three exams in this class. So, there is no midterm or final, just three exams on approx 4 chapters each. Doremus has honestly been such a good professor and is super funny. Econ may seem like a drag but she makes this class doable. Take her if you can.

Doremus is a perfectly nice, very smart lady but a terrible professor. Not only does she not teach the material well, she actually teaches it in a way that is far more difficult and confusing than it needs to be. You can do well in this class but only if you teach yourself everything. I had her class in the Silo and at the beginning of the quarter the lecture hall was completely full but by the end only about 60% of the class was coming on a regular basis because we all quickly realized that material actually makes way more sense if you read just read the online textbook and skip the lecture a together. I wish I had prioritized more of my time reading the chapters than actually going to her class.

When I first noticed that I had Professor D. I was a little nervous after reading her polyratings, but her class happily surprised me! She presents all the information you need and the practice tests she gives before midterms actually really help. The textbook and homework are all online and the system she uses really prepares you, if you're willing to put in the work. There is no final in her class, just three separate exams which aren't cumulative, attendance counts and homework is about 10% or 20% of your grade (all submitted online through Aplia). Overall, I would recommend taking Professor Doremus

I'm honestly not sure why her polyratings are so low bc I don't think she's that bad. It is very clear she is interested in her topic very much which helps keep you engaged in a big room like the business silo. This year was the first year she did three, non cumulative mid terms instead of a cumulative mid term and final, and it wasn't too bad. I never got above a B+ on the mid terms, but I also probably could've gone in to her office hours for help so thats my bad. I have heard she is super helpful at office hours though. The biggest thing I found that helped me in her class is to come prepared. I took notes on the chapter from the textbook before coming to the class that we were supposed to learn that topic, and it was SUPER helpful. She tends to go fast in her lectures, so it made it easier knowing I had most of it written down already. She is also really good about listening to what the students want and find helpful in their learning which is nice bc it is clearly she is open to change and isn't set in her ways. All in all I honestly like her a lot and would recommend her class (though I am an Econ major, so her class might just be a bit easier for me for obvious reasons)

I hated econ the entire quarter and just find it a very boring subject, however I don't think that is necessarily Doremus's fault. She moved very quickly through her lecture slides, which made taking notes very challenging and most times I would have to go back to the lecture slides after class and fill in what I missed. She has an online textbook to read and practice problems for each class, but every time I tried to read the textbook, I just got more and more confused, even if I actually understood the concept. She has three exams throughout the quarter which aren't cumulative, and I felt they were very different and much more difficult than any practice problems she assigned. I worked my butt off before each exam, spending hours and hours going to office hours, tutoring, working with other students, and doing as many practice problems as I could, and didn't receive higher than a C+ on any of the exams, which was extremely frustrating, to not have the practice problems be applicable to the exam and it's difficulty. In class she barely spent anytime working through problems, but I managed to do alright with the homework problems, which thankfully brought my grade up to a B. In general you need to be able to put in work for this class to do well in it.

This is absolutely the worst professor I have ever had at Cal Poly. The first day of class she said "my poly ratings say I'm a bad, but I'm really a good professor don't worry"??????? Her homework is so hard and the midterm/ final is ridiculous. Definitely do not take this professor if you can help it I'm serious

She's a bitch!! Does not know how to teach, Cal Poly seriously needs to fire her and get a new teacher. Fucker is one half of the time.

Not the worst class to take. but this lady is pretty weird. Kinda felt like she was speaking down to the class the entire time. All in all, an easy B.

Pretty interesting class and not that hard. Doremus would just write on the board and fail to explain what was being written down. She disappeared the week of finals, not answering any emails and did not show up to office hours. She had another professor proctor the final completely unannounced and had some very unclear questions on there that the proctor could not answer since he did not write the test. Overall, the quarter started pretty standard with decent instruction and a nice enough professor, but the latter half was seriously bad.

I took Doremus for Micro my Freshman year and dropped that class by the drop deadline because she was a horrible teacher (at the time). I think it was her first quarter teaching so that was probably expected. And looking at her polyratings, it seems like most of her ratings are from that time period, which would explain her super low score. So when I signed up for this class and saw that she was teaching it, I was prepared for the worse. Fortunately for me, she seems to have gotten a lot better at teaching. Not to mention that teaching a class of 25 Econ students is much easier than teaching 200+ kids at the silo, half of whom are taking Econ as a GE requirement. She was super nice, always willing to answer questions, and tried to make the class as fun as possible. Her grading scheme is also pretty easy for a 400 level ECON class, as Homework was 16% of your grade (she gave 100 if you submitted it and answered every question), a project + presentation which was 35% of your grade, 8% for class participation, 1% for submitting a works cited page for your project, and a midterm + final which were 40% of your grade. If you need a 400 level ECON class and don't wanna be weighed down too much, I highly recommend taking this one.
