Fantastic instructor, hard to get an A in the class (she nitpicks but she's nice and overlooks things when you are not doing well), she limits what you can do for topics (it has to be political or policy-basied) which can make it boring but it makes you an educated citizen.

Dr. Conway does not teach REC 140. She is a Communication Studies Professor and has never taught a Recreation class. The exact review above has been posted for other professors on Polyratings. This and other fictitious reviews have been posted for virtually every Cal Poly professor. The site has been contacted about the problem, but apparently "no one is home" at Polyratings.

Professor Conway Silva is not a good teacher in any way. For COMS 218, we had to read a chapter of our book and then take a quiz on it almost every class. It was so poorly planned and she makes it so difficult to get a good grade. I completed all the readings, took notes, studied as hard as i could for the midterm and final, and was not happy with my grades in her class. She is not helpful. You can tell that she does not care about what her students learn in the class, and every lecture is just the book chapter that you read the night before. It is so boring. Every class period our lecture hall was half empty because the class was so damn unbearable. And the people who were there did not respect her whatsoever because she cannot control a classroom. For example, on the first day of class, she told us that her classroom was a "technology free class period"; meaning she was not going to allow any lap tops or phones for the whole quarter. Then the next class, she made us use our phones or laptops to take the weekly online quiz. After that, everyone just kept their electronics out the whole time. It was actually kind of funny because every single person would be scrolling through Facebook or texting or doing homework for other classes except the same 3 fucking kids who would ask unnecessary questions and drag the class on longer. I am not writing this because I hate Mrs. Conway. I am writing this because I went into this class excited. I was so interested in learning about how media effects our society; it seemed so applicable! But Conway just "teaches" you the exact same stuff you already know about media. Please, don't waste your time and energy in this class. Trust me. Ask ANYONE who has taken it and you will get the same answer from them

Conway Silva is smart, but also kind of rude to students if they ask a lot of questions. I expect a B in the class, but then again there wasn't incentives to be involved in class. It's an odd class. I'd take her for another topic, maybe. Do not recommend this class.

Expect weekly reading quizzes where you have to remember the most obscure ideas. The midterm and final weren't too bad.

overall, the class itself was pretty easy. there is slight amount of reading and online quizzes every week. the the midterm and final were both straightforward. however, professor Conway is not the best professor. she seemed annoyed with student questions and pretentious. I would still say take this class, but just be prepared to be annoyed with her.

She is very political which is fine. However this is a course that needs little political commentary. But what was probably the most annoying thing is that she’s very politically biased and if you are on the other side of the political spectrum you will find yourself routinely annoyed if not upset because of her lack of concern or even awareness that there might be people in the audience who disagree.

Professor Conway-Silva was pretentious. I'll put it at that. Maybe it was just my year and my class, but she always seemed to place herself on a level that was far more superior than you. She would ask questions in class and honestly nobody would respond just because her lectures were dry and bland, and her personality was dry and bland. There were daily quizzes which were pretty easy and weren't the worst, but the lectures were absolutely painful to sit through. She alternated lectures with Professor Mary Glick, which is the head of the journalism department. I actually preferred the days where Glick lectured over Conway, because Glick didn't treat us like children. I just felt like Conway would have taught the course (which is actually super interesting) in a better light, rather than asking questions and trying to get "classroom involvement."

When I saw the ratings for this professor I was terrified. I thought having her as a teacher for a major course in my first quarter of college would make me hate journalism. To my surprise, Professor Conway was super easy to talk to, made class lectures very interactive, and was a teacher AND friend to students. She is very straight forward with everything in her class; If you do the reading, pay attention in class, and just make an effort you will get at least a B in this class. Yes, the course was hard and the reading was time-consuming, but that's college and people need to stop complaining about the work they signed up for (boom roasted). This class is quiz and test heavy so if test-taking isn't your strength then I would say maybe don't take this class if you don't have to. Personally, I thought I wasn't a good test taker, but maybe my grade in the class doesn't support that claim haha. Overall, Conway has the attitude of any college student and having her as a teacher made me excited to come to class. She knows what she is talking about, but isn't entitled and will still joke around in class. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and would recommend taking it if you don't mind doing your fair share of work.

Conway is a fun professor who talks a lot & has a lot of energy all the time. The homework, however, is a lot; the chapters are really long with a TON of information. Conway gives a presentation about the chapters we read, & then at the end of each class period we take a multiple-choice quiz that won't make any sense unless you read the chapters. Often during presentations she'll drop in answers for the quiz but won't always call attention to it, so pay attention & take notes. This class is a lot & feels like you're regurgitating information every day in class. The midterm & final are non-cumulative. The essay highkey sucks but she graded mine pretty easy. Participate often in class discussions & your grades will benefit from them. I had a C which she rounded up to a B at the end of the quarter.

Beth is a dumb, basic woman who constantly talks about dumb, basic stuff like how she constantly binges Netflix (get an actual personality, please). Her class PowerPoints are riddled with spelling and grammar errors, and do very little in regards to preparing you for her essays and exams. Her essay criticism and test text is also riddled with errors. Is she drinking while grading, or just that stupid? Overall, a boring, unprepared human being that shouldn't be employed by Cuesta College, let alone Cal Poly.

Professor Conway is so intelligent! Research methods was a hard course, but she taught it very well. Our quarter long project was very applicable to the topics we covered in class, and she explained things very thoroughly. She is an outstanding professor!

Conway was a great professor. This class was difficult and she has high expectations of her students. The material is complicated and you MUST read the book and pay attention in class or you won't get an A. Conway is happy to help her students provided that they show effort and are engaged in class. She is passionate about the topics and is very knowledgeable. This class isn't for those just trying to get an easy A, be prepared for a lot of research and reading. The class requires a quarter long group project but wasn't too bad. Highly recommended for those who seek a challenging but enjoyable class.

I didn't learn anything in this class. It's the textbook put into a powerpoint. She's also very rude. She should not work at cal poly.

This class had enjoyable subject matter. The textbook is extremely dry and confusing and I dreaded reading it, but the secondary text The Tipping Point was a great read and I'm glad I bought the book. Your grade consists of four papers, all of which were weird assignments. They're "building" essays, aka the first one you choose topics, then do research, then pick a theory, and then apply the theory to your topic. They were weird to me because they all felt like they were building to a research paper we never wrote, and I'd honestly rather have just done a normal research paper. Because they are weird, follow her syllabus EXACTLY, even if it makes for a bad normal paper. I got a B, A, A-, and B+ on my papers, depending on how exactly I followed the syllabus. Her tests were not hard, though. Just multipe choice, which were generally straight forward. Although the final questions were harder than necessary because she makes you choose the BEST answer, which means one might be sorta right, but not best. The essays were choose 2/3 or 3/4 for the final, which was nice. In the end she was kind and rounded up my grade to an A.

Professor Conway is an excellent addition to the Coms department. She is very knowledgeable on many aspects in communication and clearly articulates her expectations for the quarter. She is very approachable and willing to help students succeed at any given time. However, she does have high expectations for the class, so students in her class do need to work hard to get an A or a B. Professor Conway is very genuine and will be honest with you about areas in which you need to improve or are doing well in her class. She is very supportive and always has students' best interest at heart. I recommend taking Dr. Conway for any class!

COMS 386 was an interesting and fun class, and I am happy that i took it. Conway is a fun professor, making class interesting. The class overall really is not that difficult, there are two tests, a midterm, and a final. Theres one quiz in the beginning and each person has to write two small essays on readings, and I got an A on both papers. All throughout the course I had a solid B, and i was fine with that. At the end of the quarter, I got a C- on the large paper that was due and a D+ on the final thus dropping my grade to a C+. I talked to her about my paper and she even went through it with me and I still got a C- on it. The final i thought was easy and i got a D+ with a lot of studying. Even though this class was fun, I put in my full effort and I got a C+ in the class so overall I would've chosen another class most likely.

Dr. Conway-Silva is a great professor. This class has a lot of required reading. Can you pass without doing the reading? Probably not. The papers and exams are based heavily in the texts. However, the reading material is super interesting and some lecture time is spent going over the material that was in the readings. This is a rad class but it is not easy. Take this class only if you have the time to really get something out of it. If you don't like politics or talking about politics, this is NOT the class for you. Dr. Conway-Silva is passionate and knowledgable. I would recommend this class to anyone!

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I thought that this was going to a manageable course to take over the summer and it was not because of the professor! She was terrible and very unhelpful! If you ask her questions, she's rude and treats you like you are dumb! The work in this class is ridiculous and she grades super hard with very little instruction! I am a pretty good student and have only gotten a C in college once and worked really hard in this class and got a D! Good thing this was an elective and not a pre-req , so I still received credit for it but it was terrible!

This class is exhausting work. The readings, although interesting, are dense and confusing especially for those that are unfamiliar with politics. As someone who had a dense course load, this class was nearly impossible to keep up with. The midterm was a mentally draining examination and the final was just as difficult, even though I believed I had studied a lot for it. This class made me feel incompetent as a student, especially because it was too demanding for a GE.

Her classes are filled with tons of readings and lots of information on the PowerPoint. Not sure that I learned anything about Media Effects. She has two papers in the class and two exams. The papers are supposed to build on one another but don't really in reality. They are pretty long as well with a lot of research. The tests are difficult as well. There are multiple choice, 3/4 short answers, and 2/3 long answers. I like her as a person, but she's tough overall.

If you can avoid this professor, do. She is nice but her content is hard to follow & her feedback on assignments is vague & useless.
