The class is what you'd expect. A survey, or rather a long string of power points, of art from the past 4,000 years. It contains no interactivity and seems as if he's still trying to figure out the curriculum. He changed the test layout from the first one after noting that we apparently got too high of a grade. This screwed most of us and here we are now. He has a stutter, which is bearable, but after the 8th "uh, um, uh" it gets old. If you're looking to fulfill a GE category, I'd suggest you take a more upbeat class.

This is an interesting class and an easy one. The class is graded on 3 exams. There are readings every week you have to do but those are fairly simple and are not long. The lectures can feel long sometimes and it is easy to get distracted because you are allowed to have your computer but if you do listen the information is interesting. Professor DePasquale really knows his art history but his speaking can sometimes be lacking, he often stumbles over words but gets the main point across in an easy to understand manner. There are multiple choice question lists that coincide with the lectures. Some of the questions on the list appear on the exams, so if you memorize the questions and answers and corresponding artwork, you'll be good. Take notes in class! And study the readings before the exams! Take him for an interesting GE. Its worth it.

Professor DePasquale is amazing. He's a really interesting lecturer and I actually really enjoyed his class. I've always loved History but he did not disappoint in terms of knowledge and skill. His actual class was also rather easy, he gave out question lists of about 300 questions of which 50 would be on the exam (he said that some of the exam questions weren't on a list but I don't think that's true - or he just prepared us really well). The only homework is reading which isn't actually graded, just discussed. He said he might make it graded next quarter but the readings are only about 5 minutes bi weekly anyway. All in all I found the class really easy but I also learned a lot about Art and the Western Tradition. I highly recommend Professor DePasquale!

This guy knows his stuff, but listening to him for 2 hours makes you want to stab your eardrums out with a q-tip. Very monotone and he stutters a lot. Don't skip lecture because he says things in class that aren't anywhere on the material he posts online.

It's a pretty easy class and he's a really nice guy.

Professor Depasquale is a new professor and though it is evident that he still getting used to teaching here at Cal Poly he is a genuine and nice professor that knows his art history. *This class consisted of three exams, each worth a third of your grade. Each week he prepares question lists that coincide with the daily lectures that are an effective way of checking that you are comprehending the material that he is relaying during lectures. For each exam you are tested on lectures, questions from the question list, and weekly readings. Overall, I enjoyed Professor DePasquale's ART 112 class, and would recommend him as a professor to anyone interested in taking "Survey of Western Art."

Professor makes his lectures very interesting and his assignments are straight forward and consistent. By far my favorite class, and I'm not even a huge fan of art or history.

Salve! This has been the best class I have enrolled in so far. Every night that this class was scheduled I looked forward to being there 6-8 pm. The work-load is very manageable. The three tests are all fifty question multiple-choice and most of them take someone who just studied (even just a little) under half an hour to complete. There are also weekly reading quizzes online but they are open-note, out-of-class, and the exact questions on the quiz are pinned up with the readings (so you can learn the answers as you read and get 100% every single time). There are no essay questions... you just have to come to class with the art pieces and questions printed and sit back to listen. Mr. DePasquale has a very engaging class and most of my peers agree that he is funny, interesting, and has a great knowledge of the material that may even make you want to take more Art History classes! I highly recommend this class and this professor because I really learned so much valuable information from a subject I knew almost nothing about.

Professor DePasquale is great. He is a really interesting lecturer and I never skipped class because I genuinely looked forward to going to his class, despite the fact that I had it at night. You can really tell he knows his stuff and is really passionate about the subject which shows in the way he teaches - this could have very easily been a boring class with a lot of memorization but he made it enjoyable and worth my time and not at all a drag. The work load is very manageable and his assignments are super straight forward. There are two multiple choice midterms and a final that are noncumulative and worth 25% of your grade each; he gives you question lists to fill out based on lectures that he chooses about half of the exam questions from, so as long as you go to class and pay attention, it's easy to do well in the class. There are also weekly online quizzes that are based on the readings he posts online and are open note and easy to get 100% on. Overall, I found the class to be super informative and enjoyable and I feel like I learned a lot. I highly recommend DePasquale if you're looking for an easy, fun GE to fulfill a req!

I loved this class; I find it super cool that I possess some knowledge on art history and art movements. Pasquale is a great teacher, he's not an old fart, tries to make the class interesting, and offers cool stories of his own about his life. This class is extremely easy. There's no daily homework, except a quiz that you submit on Sunday night based off of some readings. The readings are fine - and he posts the quiz questions beforehand so you can answer as you go. Classes are just lectures - download the art image slides beforehand on your laptop so it's easy to take notes under the image itself, and download the question list as well and answer as you go as well. Most of the question lecture list appears on the exams, so take the time to look those over before the test and have every one answered. Before each exam, just have a basic understanding behind each image (but take really good notes in the lectures), and memorize the dates! Don't want to screw up basic answers like that. Just make timelines on your own to help you memorize. Easy and enjoyable class overall.

I loved this class! Super easy and super interesting, his lectures made me want to go to class. There are three exams, all which he pretty much gives you the questions for ahead of time in class on his handouts you print out or just highlight on you laptop. All three took me no more than 20 minutes and all three I got an A on. Just study the dates of the art and know what century it is in as well as the handouts and you are guaranteed an A. There are also weekly readings that have an online quiz with them but they probably take an r45 minutes at most if you are one of those people such as myself that throughly read things. He's a really cool fella and is obviously extremely passionate about art. I'd recommend this class fully.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class by Professor DePasquale. Some of the comments on his Polyratings really don't do him the justice he deserves. Based on some ratings I walked into class on the first day expecting some mumbling old prof relying on tenure to get by - which is not the case! Sure, he may be a little awkward, but that really just adds to the enjoyability and humor of the class as a whole. I really did look forward to this class on MW nights when I had it and time usually passed quickly because I enjoyed what I was learning. He made the class very straightforward and puts a lot of thought into how his instruction materials could best benefit his students. His PolyLearn was easily accessible, the tests were graded on time, the power points were easy to follow, and the quizzes and question lists were helpful when studying for tests. DePasquale teaches very well and is able to meet his students on a level in which we can connect and understand. His personal stories about art were always entertaining and connected to course conceptions and showed his passion for art and teaching students. The class was interesting and I was able to learn a lot about art as well as successfully study and do well - and I might add that visual memorization is one of my stronger study skills, so flashcards really helped when studying. This class and professor has probably been my favorite at Poly so far and I would definitely recommend!

Easy class, average professor. He is obviously enthusiastic about the material, which is always a plus, but lectures can be somewhat dry. This may not be due to the professor though, but more a product of the subject matter. If you enjoy art history, then you will enjoy this class.

Definitely take this class. Dr.DP is a really professor and cool guy. He's fluent in Italian so it was pretty cool to hear him speak and translate some of the things we were learning. His midterms are super easy and are almost the exact same questions as in the packets you do in class.

This was such an easy GE. He gives a question list each week that you fill out during class (or find online). Half of the questions on each test come directly from the question list, the other half are still relatively easy to answer. There were 8 online quizzes that correspond to readings which you have an entire week to finish. Not a hard class at all. He also makes the class interesting and not completely boring to go to.

DePasquale is an amazing professor who, you can tell, truly loves art and enjoys sharing his knowledge with his students. He is really funny and makes each lecture enjoyable to listen to. His class was very interesting all quarter long and his assignments are fairly simple. You will have a weekly quiz that he gives you all the information for. There is no required textbook, so he gives you the readings for the quizzes/midterms on PolyLearn. Not difficult at all and he pretty much tells you what you need to pay attention to. He also provides you with a weekly questions list that has all the notes needed for each lecture, and most of the questions are on the midterms verbatim. Midterms are 50 questions multiple choice, and if you look at the images and study the lecture notes, you'll pass with flying colors. He's a super cool guy and is extremely easy to talk to. One of my favorite professors at Cal Poly.

Depasquale is an amazing professor! The class is based off of about 7 or 8 quizzes, once a week. He gives you fairly short readings on polylearn in which he opens the quiz on Thursday and you have up until Sunday night to complete it. They're usually about 15 questions. Also, he gives 2 midterms and a final, all the same format (50 multiple choice questions, about half coming from the questions lists and quizzes that he gives you beforehand). His lectures and powerpoints are very interesting so coming to class is pretty fun since the topics are fascinating and he likes to add relevant pictures and details to his presentation so students will really grasp the concepts. He is extremely genuine and you can tell he spends a lot of time working to make sure he is prepared. Not to mention, Depasquale is very funny, approachable, nice, friendly, passionate, intelligent, and fair. He offers multiple EASY extra credit opportunities and truly wants his students to do well. Plus, he is always prompt, on-time, grades the tests quickly, and sends out e-mails with reminders to students. I'm so glad I took his class! Not bad to look at either.... & ladies he speaks fluent Italian ;)

Tom is an intelligent professor who truly loves art history. His passion for the subject makes the class slightly more interesting, however the material can be a little dense at times. He has weekly quizzes online based off the readings and lectures. But don't worry, he literally posts the quiz questions before hand, so you have plenty of time to answer them, then you just go into PL and transfer the answers over. Tom also gives you multiple choice lecture question lists each week, and if you study these lists you'll be in good shape for the 3 tests (all weighted the same). Overall, very cool professor who is understanding of his students.

Tom is a really nice and funny guy! There is an online quiz every week that he gives you the questions for ahead of time so you just have to fill them in. Make sure you do them! Missing 1 quiz could make a big difference in your grade! He really wants everyone to succeed in his classes by trying to make compromises with certain things. The class consists of the online quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final (that is the same length and worth the same amount as a midterm).

I enjoyed this class and also the professor's passion for the subject. The course is pretty straightforward and we review art from Ancient Egypt up to modern times, and the course consists of two midterms and a final (not cumulative), and online quizzes that you have to read some excerpts for on your own.

this class was really fun! Tom is very passionate about the subject so he makes it interesting and straightforward. If you stay awake during the lectures and take some notes you should be fine for the midterms/final. Also make sure to follow along with the question lists for each week, many of the questions on the midterms and final are from these lists! He offers easy extra credit oppurtunities so definitely take advantage of those :) Overall, this class is pretty easy if you pay attention during class.

Tom was a pretty funny professor. He presented all the information clearly, and posted all his lectures on polylearn for you to study later. You have to memorize a bunch of paintings in his class, but you go over them pretty thoroughly in class so it's not too bad. You have a weekly reading with an online quiz due on sundays, two midterms, and a final. Overall, it was a pretty basic class and Tom brought his own experiences into a lot of the presentations, so it made the art seem more personable.

Professor DePasquale is a great professor! I loved his class and I learned a lot. You can tell that he really is passionate about art history and he presents the information in a clear manner. It's definitely hard to pay attention sometimes given that it is a two hour lecture, but I would take notes and fill out the reading question lists while he talked. His tests are mostly questions straight from the reading question lists so definitely do those and study them!

Depasquale is a decent teacher. The lectures can be a bit of a bore at times, but the class is really easy if you take the time to actually learn the material. He gives a list of questions and answers to fill out, and some of those questions will be on the tests. The only hw he gives is to examine some documents that are relevant to the paintings he discussed that week. Then, you take a quiz on the documents. The quizzes are online and super easy. He's good at making what would otherwise be a dull and uninteresting class informative and understandable.

I highly recommend taking DePasquale's ART 112 class if you are looking to fulfill your C3 requirement. He presents the material with so much enthusiasm which makes the two hour long lectures better much than they should be. There's 3 assessments, all which are completely based on the material covered in class which is super nice. Overall super cool guy, easy work load and interesting material. One of my favorite professors for sure!

At first I hated the class because it (by far) has the worst scheduling (it's a Tue/Thur class from 6:10-8:00). Tom's a really cool guy though, and he always started the lecture right at 6:10, not wasting time like other professors do. He presents the information very clearly on organized slides (sometimes he'd have animations that he worked hard on, and I must say, they were impressive). He also gave us 10 question list worksheets for lecture which all correlated to the material, and most of those questions would appear on the midterms. The coursework was very light, consisting of weekly online quizzes and readings. Grades are based on those quiz scores and 3 midterms, which aren't too difficult. Tom genuinely cares about his students and he tries to keep everyone entertained. He also sounds like he knows what he's talking about, which is always a good thing. If I were you, I wouldn't take this course just because it's easy, but because it's a genuinely interesting course. I didn't mind the scheduling after a couple of lectures and saw myself looking forward to them. As long as you're good at memorizing years and names/appearance of art/architecture, it'd be an easy GE C3 for you. And remember, the pants are from Banana Republic.

Professor DePasquale is the most passionate, intelligent professor i have had the privilege of having at Cal Poly. i took this course because I needed an easy GE to boost my GPA. However, I found out this course required more work than I anticipated. That being said, as long as you show up to class and fill out the question lists, it should be a breeze. I learned so much in this class even though I didn't expect to learn anything. This course is definitely worth taking to fulfill a GE requirement or even just for fun. Again, Tom is the man and you will love him as a professor even if you don't think the material is super interesting at first. THIS GUY KNOWS HIS SHIT. I can't say that for most professors.

This class is amazing. The lectures are long and packed with information, but I was able to pay attention the whole time because Dr.DePasquale is such an amazing professor. He made us laugh every day and I truly looked forward to going to his class. Thomas DePasquale is an incredibly genuine person and you can tell how much he loves art history. If you have any interest in art take this class!!!

Thomas is the cutest and sweetest. He is extremely passionate about this subject (ART!), he has superior knowledge and can present it in an entertaining and educating way. I had little knowledge regarding Renaissance art and Im not an art student, yet I found the class well taught and instructed. I'd recommend him and maybe even ask him out.

I really like Tom. He's just a cool guy. He probably isn't the best lecturer, but he is pretty knowledgable about the subject. I never took lecture notes, but I would take notes on Khan Academy videos later, which were super helpful, and basically just said what Tom taught in more detail. The class consisted of lectures (mandatory attendance) and readings (usually 5-10 short readings for the week, probably about 20 minutes of reading total). His tests were 5 essay questions (three identification, two comparison). He seemed to be an easy grader. So basically, take Tom, watch Khan Academy, get an A.

Prof. DePasquale was an amazing professor! He was very passionate about every lecture and connected each topic with previous topics and modern life. A lot of the test/quizzes are multiple choice, and a lot of the questions are about overarching themes and you don't really need to know a lot of super specific facts. No need to know the exact dates of a piece, just proximity. For the midterm essays, he wants you to discuss the three S's (first discussed in class one) and likes when you reference other pieces from the course. Overall, he wants you to learn and enjoy the class, and doesn't try to trick you like some professors. He's fun and easygoing, and there isn't a ton of work outside the class. He assumes everyone taking his class is in the Art and Design track, but if you even have a passing interest in art history, this is a really fun and relatively easy class that I highly recommend.

Tom was the best professor I've had by far. You'll have a mix of lengthy and short readings and quizzes to go with them every week, but I found it very manageable. He makes question lists for every lecture so you don't even have to take notes if you don't want to, just fill out the sheet as you go along. He's a professor who tries to memorize everyone's names so he can call on you randomly to share about some art piece, and he's super receptive no matter what you say (and if you don't know anything he's also good about giving you an easy out). There are three exams that are pretty easy to study for if you just look over your question lists and make some flashcards of the art pieces, and the final exam was non-cumulative + a fairly interesting essay. Overall it was a good mix of challenging and genuine enjoyment of the class, he's a cheerful guy, a good lecturer, and genuinely passionate about the subject. I'm an art student who sucks at history and analyzing old art who LOVED this class. Not sure how a student outside of the art & design major might view the class, but every art student I know loved him too. Take his class!!!
