PLEASE TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. At first I felt like she was going through the material too quickly, but the class just goes at an extremely quick pace. She will answer all of your questions whether it be regarding homework or an exam. I had an awful experience in high school math, especially algebra, and she worked very hard with me to make up for lost time. Her office hours are great, and she makes sure that everyone that attends gets their questions answered. She makes sure that you are very prepared for exams, and she will literally answer anything you ask. All together, I felt like this class prepared me to face math with a more positive attitude. She also really genuinely cares about the well-being and success of her students, which is a plus!

A good math teacher. Although she was my first math professor at poly, she was way more understanding and organized than my high school math teachers. I would recommend her for my fellow classmates

I recommend to take this teacher. One test a week which is easy to get a good grade on. Attendance grade is also a great thing bc if you go to every class, you have a easy good grade. 2 super easy midterms and a hard final. Final is too hard but you don't even need a good grade to secure a B in this class. The teacher is really helpful and well organized, it was a pleasure to go in this class and to learn with her everyday. Thank you Mrs Burnett!

Explains material extremely quickly and isn't very good at answering questions. Weekly quizzes are super easy but the 2 midterms and final are pretty challenging.

I took her for Precalc and would definitely recommend her. She is a very relatable professor and truly cares about her students success. She answers emails promptly, doesn't try to trick you on quizzes and tests, and had a very straightforward attitude about her expectations, which I appreciated. Definitely take her class if you get a chance!

At first I was so scared. The whole class did really bad on our first quiz so she emailed us and basically told half the class to drop (about 1/5 did or so). I did well enough, but I thought I was going to have a terrible quarter. However as the quarter went on, you start to see that she really cares and was trying to help us as best she could. Quizzes are easy, participation is easy, midterms are medium hard, but the final was SO HARD. I thought the entire class was going to pass out. But she is really sweet. I'd recommend having prior pre-calc knowledge before taking her, and you will do fine.

Shelby was kind of strange to start off. Being a grad student she understands what college students are going through, because she is one of us. The quizzes kind of sucked, her midterms were pretty easy (STUDY) and her final was medium if you studied. She cares more about the students than any teacher ive ever had. She sets up so many extra office hours (especially during dead week). GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND YOU WILL SUCCEED. She kind of dresses very lazy, but i could get over that. Her lectures kind of need some work but she gets the material across. But the key to this class is going to her office hours because they are very helpful. Also she says weird things every once in a while and emails things that make you think "what the hell did she just say?" all in all not a bad class and an easy 8 am class. Would be worth your while to take her class.

I do not recommend taking math with Shelby. I am not one to blame a teacher for the reason I got a specific grade in a class, but with Shelby she is certainly the reason why I did not do as well as I would have liked. I took Pre Calc in high school and got an A and understood everything, but with Shelby I could barely understand a thing. Throughout class we have to constantly correct her mistakes on the board and she is awful at answering questions, especially on a test her go to answer is "go with your gut" no matter what the question is. She is certainly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. If this is your first time taking pre calc or any math I would not do it with Shelby. While some of the information on her tests and quizzes come right from the homework or study guide, some of it is stuff that has never been covered and you are expected to just know based off of little snippets of information provided. She is looking at getting a job teaching math at cal poly after she finishes her masters program and if the school is to hire her they would be making one of the biggest mistakes ever. She clearly knows math very well, but does not know or understand how to teach it to others. Teachers should not be picking favorites in class and being lenient with them, while grading those who to correct her more harshly, nor should teachers yell at students for helping each other during class. When a majority of the class is lost with what you're trying to teach, are constantly not doing well on tests, and overall miserable in your class, you should probably realize teaching is not your cup of tea.

Don't listen to the post below. I don't know what that person's problem is, but I will note the suspicious date of their evaluation (the day after a midterm). I had no trouble following Shelby's lecture. I liked her style and her direct explanations. I never saw her picking favorites, nor yelling at anyone. I do remember certain rude students *cough cough [looks down]* who kept talking to other (which was annoying the crap out of me), and her asking them to stop that. Honestly, I don't know how she restrained herself from punching some of my fellow classmates in the face. I freaking hate it when other people act aggressively disinterested. (Let me ask you this: how likely is it that a student took precalc in high school and "understood everything," but then took precalc again at Cal Poly and was suddenly confused "because of the teacher"? Really? Graphing parabolas used to be as clear as day, but suddenly they're completely confusing and no in class knows what's happening? Yeah...that's why you got placed into precalc...again...) Anyway, I'm way off topic. Shelby rocks. Peace out.

Not being the best at math I was worried going into this course. Even though it was a faster paced math course Professir Burnett was able to slow down the pace down enough to where everything was explained clearly. Whenever a student had a question she did her best to clarify any confusion and this was done extremely well. Overall I believe that I got lucky when I was assigned a math professor because I didn't bother looking at any ratings for the past quarter but it turned out to be the best math class I have been in so far.

I want to start off by saying that Shelby is hands down the best math professor I have ever had! Though she is a grad student, I feel as if her teaching capabilities are above and beyond those of any math teacher I had in high school. She truly cares about the success of every student and was willing to take the time to make sure everyone thoroughly understood things. Coming from someone who has never been the strongest in math, I was able to really get the material and even enjoy the class. Attending office hours was also very helpful, as Shelby would answer any question I had. If you have the option, TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SHELBY. You will not regret it!

Let me first start off by saying that Shelby is an awesome person. She’s a grad student, so she’s only 5 years older than most of her students, so it was really easy to bond with her on a personal level and it was really easy for her to understand what we are going through as students, and accommodate us accordingly. I always got C’s/B’s in high school math classes, so i’m not really surprised that I got a C+ in Shelby’s class, but it had nothing to do with Shelby’s teaching. She really does everything she can to ensure that her students are successful. She has so many office hours set up during the week, and even goes above and beyond to have extra office hours during midterms and finals (something that is hard for her to do, considering she has her own midterm/finals to study for too). She presents the material as clearly/easily as she can in the 50 minutes she is provided for class. Some students get it in those 50 minutes, and some don’t (like me), but thats why she has so many office hours. The only people who are not successful in this class are those who are not willing to get extra help. The structure of her class is fair (weekly quizzes, two midterms, and a final. Homework not graded or checked). Some questions on midterms/finals may seem obscure while you're taking the exam, but just try to answer it, and always write at least SOMETHING down, even if you know it's wrong because she's really good at recognizing student difficulties and she'll always give you half credit or grade really easy on questions that many students get wrong. Overall, I’m very happy I ended up taking this class with Shelby. Side note: There’s a rating a couple posts down calling Shelby out on “picking favorites” and I would just like to address the fact that, although I was definitely one of Shelby’s favorite students outside of class, I still ended up with a C+ in the class. Shelby, in no way, “picks favorites, and is more lenient with them.” She’s equally lenient with everyone.

This class was lit *insert flame emoji* I never really enjoyed going to math classes because I always thought they were super boring, but Shelby managed to make her class interesting and enjoyable to go to. Sometimes she would do random things like jump on top of a table to get our attention so that we would remember something (I still don't remember what she said to us lol) and then she would get super embarrassed about it after which I thought was hilarious. Also, with those students who were AGGRESSIVELY DISINTERESTED and constantly radiated negative vibes, (aka 5 posts down) Shelby sure did a damn good job at keeping her cool everyday in class while dealing with da haters. Also, @the post that said she dresses lazy, "What do you expect?! I can't be a model, part time teacher, AND a grad student all at the same time!" In all seriousness though, Shelby is a wonderful person and a great math instructor. She knows how to present the material in ways that are easy to understand and is always really helpful in office hours. Shelby really cares about her students' success. Being a grad student, she can easily relate to her students and knows what we're going through. For the class, her weekly quizzes were pretty easy as long as you did the homework (the questions come straight from the homework), and then the midterms and finals are harder than the quizzes but they're not that bad if you take the practice tests seriously and go to office hours for help. She makes sure to set up extra office hours around midterms and the final which was really helpful. I definitely recommend taking Shelby's class! Shelby rocks, peace out.

I really did not connect with her teaching style. I respect that she tried to have students without a strong math background find a good place, but she went a little too far. She made a spreadsheet for why we shouldn't take her class. She sent us multiple emails about why we shouldn't take her class, so I already had a pessimistic view going in. She gave us the most complex problems from the book for our tests and taught us very long and drawn out ways to do simple problems. Maybe some people can deal with her teaching style, but I definitely couldn't. However, her class is passable.

She began the quarter by sending us a series of emails about how none of us are going to pass and how we should switch to Math 117. Then in the following weeks she tried to make it as easy for us as possible. Good teacher who knows that liberal arts students don't care about math, but tried many times to scare us. Very passable and I would recommend her.

Fair grader, sometimes hard on the homework. Really wanted us to succeed and always emailed us to see her in office hours. At times, she was hard to follow and skipped steps that made everyone confused. Did relatively good on the chapter tests but she gave us a final that I'm pretty sure half of the class failed. She told us all year she wouldn't curve the class or anyone's grade but after that final, she had to. I heard from some people that other professors were better and some were not. From someone who had no background in calc, I can say that Shelby taught me a lot. Overall, great professor.

Professor Szentesi is a wonderful teacher. The class is difficult as we have a lot of assignments within a short amount of time. She grades thoroughly but is always willing to help and go over assignments. Her lectures are clear and thorough. I believe everything she said in class was helpful and necessary. She doesn't waste time so the class goes by quickly. I worked pretty diligently all quarter long and will probably receive a B in the class. The assignments we did can easily be put in a portfolio or showed to a future employer as examples of what you are capable of. I enjoyed her teaching style and think she is a great person. She asks a lot of her students but I really think it is worth it because the assignments are all things that we could be doing in a PR job. I definitely recommend her class for students who are willing to put in the work and learn a lot. There is one midterm which is exactly everything we learned in class, no surprises. This includes the quizzes and assignment criteria. The test requires you to complete an assignment like the ones she gives in class, very straightforward. The final is a project which consists of several assignments on one company of your choice that she approves.

Shelby does an excellent job at previewing material before class begins, which helps out all the newbs. She also does a great job at motivating us throughout the hour to ensure we all reach out maximum potential. Honestly, I try to go to her class every week because I don't want to miss a single one (although sometimes she closes the door and I have to knock to get in). Very friendly after class and in office hours, and always demonstrates what I have questions on. Outfits always on point. 10/10 would recommend coming to Shelby's classes! Only downside, she mumbles sometimes, and can be confusing to follow. But once you know the material, you don't really need to follow her.
