The BEST professor at Cal Poly! Makes labs interesting and has the best dad jokes. Really cares about his students. It's easy if you come to class.

I assumed chemistry would be a difficult course as this is a general education course and is unrelated to my major; however, Eagon explained everything in a clear manner that was easy to follow. He kept class interesting with throwing in jokes and random facts to keep the class stimulated during lectures. He was a great professor and I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend. I rarely studied for this course and was always able to finish my homework during class. I ended up taking this class pass/fail and therefore put little effort into this course; however, I have an A+ in the course and regret taking it pass/fail.

I highly recommend Dr. Eagon for anyone taking Chem as a support course. As someone who hated having to take 2 years of chemistry classes when I'd rather focus on other subjects, the only thing that kept me focused on lecture and the overwhelming pile of information is an approachable professor that tries to keep things interesting. I had Eagon for two quarters and wouldn't have chosen any other professor. Ochem is hard, so if you want a professor that tries to be understanding and is easily approachable, I recommend Eagon. Prep for the quizzes, complete all the homework he provides, and the tests are relatively easy and straightforward.

Professor Eagon is one of my favorite professors I've had at Cal Poly. He understands that Organic Chemistry is difficult, and does his best to help his students succeed. I recommend going to his office hours frequently--I did, and he is very helpful. He will make models for us to look at, he'll stay late to help his students, and he is very personable. He will tell the class what sort of questions he will ask on concepts, and even at times state that something will absolutely be on the test. His quizzes and tests aren't too difficult if you put in the time to study. This is a hard class, so don't expect any professor make it easy--but Eagon does a great job of presenting things clearly. Take him! He's awesome!

TAKE EAGON. Dr. Eagon is a great professor. I always enjoyed his 8am lectures because he made Ochem fun by throwing in jokes and corny puns--which enlightens the mood in the morning. For most people, they would say Ochem is hard or they couldn't keep up with eagon because they just don't practice enough problems. All of the homework problems eagon assigns really help you understand the material--he sometimes even uses some of the homework and lecture problems on the tests and quizzes. The make-up of the course is extremely fair. 2 midterms and 1 final, with the final making up a review section and a new material section. You can drop one of the midterm or review section tests. Quizzes and Tests were always very straightforward and there are never/rarely any curveball questions. If you want a professor that cares and makes ochem fun to understand, take eagon! He is extremely friendly and pretty much always in his office if you have any questions.

Probably the best professor at cal poly. He was really good at conveying the material and literally would tell us you have to know this or we're skipping this chapter because its irrelevant. Very fair grader also, the only negative reviews are probably due to the fact that the material is really difficult but Eagon makes it really easy to understand! I would take him over any other chem professor at Poly

Honestly the best professor I've ever had at Cal Poly so far. I have never had a professor who was better at explaining concepts than Dr. Eagon. Even after his class was over, I still went to him for a good explanation when I had a chemistry question. Highly would recommend taking him for the entire ochem series (myself and many others were quite upset he did not teach ochem 3 this year). His class is extremely fair and there is no guessing or basing your grade relative to your peers in the class. He does not round/curve, but his tests are extremely fair and contain all material you have seen in the class. He also makes his class entertaining by making a large number of ochem dad jokes to keep you awake at 8am.

I took Professor Eagon for both OCHEM I and OCHEM II. He is THE BEST professor in the chemistry department! Going into organic chemistry I had heard how it was the most difficult, challenging class I would ever take. I knew many who had to retake the class. Dr. Eagon put all those worries at ease. He really does the best he can to set you up for success from the start. His notes are extremely straight forward and he gives good suggestions for study habits, such as flashcards or models (seriously, do flashcards, they help so much!). He is willing to answer any questions in class and slow down if a student needs help. I highly encourage going to office hours and reviewing difficult homework problems and old tests because Dr. Eagon is extremely helpful working through the problems with you. Besides the flashcards and office hours, he also posts old exams that you can practice before the midterms and finals. I would recommend timing yourself when you practice these. On top of all of that, Dr. Eagon is a really entertaining lecturer and a professor who really cares about his student's success.

This class was great. O chem can be incredibly dry, but Eagon makes it fun and keeps you awake and laughing during early morning classes. He's always around the 4th floor of baker and willing to answer any question you might have. He gets to know all of his students and really makes an effort to know something about your life. He gives weekly/every other week quizzes, always scheduled, and almost always easy if you studied exactly what he taught the week before. He often gives you straightforward reactions straight from the notes or reuses homework questions. They're 15 minute quizzes and are good practice for the test. He also gives 2 midterms, and a final that consists of a "3rd midterm" and a "final review" section. Together he basically counts these tests as 4 separate tests, and the lowest one can be dropped (except the final review in some classes). He gives old tests for practice and they are pretty much exactly what the test will be in terms of context and format. He's a cheeky bastard, but you'll love him unless you're some uptight weirdo concerned about profs wasting 15 minutes of lecture time to make corny jokes.

Very fun and entertaining professor. I came into organic chemistry very nervous, especially since Eagon was new to Cal Poly. I was pleasantly surprised to find I enjoyed the class immensely. Eagon is a fair grader who gives a lot of partial credit. His quizzes and exams are exactly as he describes, and the midterms are very similar to the practice exams he gives. His lectures are very clear and he states exactly what he expects you to understand. He is also a great lab professor, no quizzes just a bit of prep work before lab. This is a funny, kind professors who genuinely wants his students to succeed. Take a class with him if you can!

Eagon is really a terrible instructor. His lectures were painful and his personality is dreadful. You must avoid him! There are plenty of other awesome teachers in the department, Eagon is the LAST person you should take! Cal Poly needs to give him the boot promptly, and Eagon, if you're reading this.... enough with trying to be a comedian, work on your teaching skills.

Dr. Eagon is an excellent teacher to take for organic chemistry. He is very clear about what he expects for quizzes and midterms, his homework problems accurately reflect what is covered in lecture, and he is very helpful in office hours. Eagon keeps the course fun and material manageable.

Dr. Eagon is by far the best teacher I have had at Poly. He makes every class lecture interesting by relating all of ochem to life and spitting hilarious chem jokes throughout the class. He was always completely fair with grading and never threw curveballs on midterms or the final. His quizzes are weekly and open note and he always provided a practice final and practice midterms so that you would know exactly what to expect. I had him for lab too and couldn't ask for a better professor. He is so passionate about chemistry and you can tell through his teaching. Two thumbs up for Eagon!!!

Eagon has 2 midterms, week 4 and week 8, and a final that is made up of a "midterm 3" and a comprehensive test, which are both on the day of the final. He makes practice midterms and finals which are somewhat like the real ones, so as long as you do well on those you should be ok with the tests. Quizzes are open note and are very straight forward. He covers all of the material, but sometimes doesn't go into great depth about certain things that might need it (actually reading the book helps with that). Overall, I really enjoyed his teaching style. It probably wouldn't hurt if he stepped up the difficulty of the class a little. Also, he cracks a lot of cheesy jokes, which I find keeps the class interesting, but I guess depending on the type of person you are you might not enjoy that style.

After reading the reviews, I noticed that a lot of the bad reviews are because of his jokes. If you can't handle a professor who is trying to make a hard class more light hearted, then maybe you shouldn't take it with him. Yes, his jokes are extremely cheesy, but they're fun. And the class can be daunting, so a little stupid humor is nice. His quizzes are easy, his exams are more challenging, but fair, and I was able to use what I learned in his class for the rest of O chem. His class was not easier because he didn't expect anything from us. His class was easier because he explained the concepts well.

Dr Eagon is AWESOME! If your terrified of OCHEM take Dr. Eagon! Some people complain about his jokes but seriously like you have to lighten up OCHEM in some way. If you are super serious about OCHEM and like want to know like every MINUTE detail take Dr. P otherwise get over it! He is funny and approachable and willing to help you with your time at Cal Poly in any way possible! His office hours are super helpful and he's really easy to ask questions to. Even if you completely screw something up he will sit there and help you understand why you got it wrong and how to fix it for the next time! (but don't just go into his office hours unprepared! try to fix the problem on your own!). Dr. Eagon is my favorite prof at Cal Poly and if you get the chance to take his class do it!!!!! (also just a little note to people starting ochem: Dr. P is also a good prof BUT I would only recommend taking him for CHEM 317 or 318 if you took him for CHEM 316 because he builds a very different foundation from the other profs! Additionally, CHEM 316 is like the "fun ochem" where you learn like stereochemistry etc while the other two ochems are about memorizing reactions, so keep that in mind!)

In response to second post down: "If I had taken organic chemistry with any other teacher I never would have realized my passion for chemistry." LOL. I'd like to see you take it with Palandoken and see if you still have this "passion." Eagon is easy, but you won't leave the class having truly LEARNED the material. Everyone likes him because everyone gets A+ on his exams. I like him, but that's mainly because his tests are easy, you just need to study and memorize reactions and mechanism. I'd take him again, but I would probably also supplement my studies with the textbook just to learn more than "so and so with HCL makes so and so."

I had Dr Eagon for both 316 and 317. I was super nervous to take ochem because it doesn't necessarily have the best reputation, but I ended up loving it. I wouldn't have wanted to take it with any other professor. He understood that a majority of the people taking it were not ochem majors so he made sure to go over all the material in a very understandable way that made it simple and straightforward. He was super interactive with everyone, and I personally found his sense of humor hilarious. This is the type of teacher that it is worth taking a priority or crashing his class to make sure you get in.

Dr. Eagon is a great professor. He makes a lot of jokes in lecture. It keeps things interesting. The material, quizzes, and tests are really strait forward. 317 is a lot different than 316 in that 317 is mostly reactions with not as much theoretical stuff. Also, lecture is shorter so there’s really only time to go over what you need to know; however, the text book explains some and I recommend going to office hours or just stopping by for clarification and or amplification on certain things (he’s very receptive and wants to help). Like most classes you get what you put in.

Dr. Eagon is awesome! There is a reason his courses fill up first when registration comes around. He is the best ochem professor here at Poly. He keeps you involved throughout lecture (with random fun facts and jokes about science) and makes the material clear and understandable. Eagon gives his students a clear layout of what he expects from them throughout the quarter with his homework and practice problems he gives, along with practice midterms. I highly recommend doing them because it is what he bases his tests on. He has 2 midterms and a final (compromised of a midterm 3 and a review section) and drops your lowest test score, he also has 6 quizzes (also drops lowest). He honestly cares about his students and wants them to do well and succeed in his class. Basically, if you want to truly understand Organic Chemistry and enjoy it, TAKE DR. E! Dr. Eagon was by far one of the best professors I have had so far at Cal Poly. I was really nervous to take O Chem because I had heard so many bad things about it, and how hard it is to do well and maintain good grades. I had also heard the material was really difficult to grasp. Taking CHEM 316 with Eagon completely got rid of these fears for me - not only is his teaching style engaging, entertaining, and extremely understandable but his class is actually enjoyable. He has so much knowledge on this subject and has an extremely unique way of teaching it that will leave you with an unforgettable experience and an actual foundation in organic chemistry. You won't just memorize some material to pass a class, you'll actually learn something. If you go to every lecture, do the homework problems he assigns, and ask for help when you feel lost or behind you can do well in this class. He gives you so much study material and endless resources to succeed, and is very willing to help when you have questions or need more explaining to understand a topic. I took a priority the next quarter just to ensure I'd be able to take 317 with him. I highly suggest taking Eagon, because no matter what O Chem isn't going to be easy because it is advanced material that you need to put work in to learn, but at least he does everything in his power to make it easier.

Dear Dr. Eagon, I understand that you like to make fuckin cheesy annoying as fuck jokes, but guess what fucker, you aren't that fuckin funny. Also, I dont give a shit if your a fuckin chemist, stop acting like chemistry is superior to everything you bald fucker. Most students in your class dont plan on pursuing chemistry and are taking it as prerequisites or it's fuckin required for our goddamn major. So don't fuckin bash others who dont really give a fuck about it or who will abandon it after ochem. There are other careers/skills you don't know shit about so don't bash others who may not know what you do about oragnic chemistry. Just teach the damn class.

Dr. Eagon is by far the best professor I have had since I have been at Cal Poly. He presents the material in a very clear, organized way and makes it easy to understand even when the material is challenging. CHEM 318 was not an easy class and I had to put a lot of hard work and studying in the get the grade that I got but I enjoyed every class with Dr. E. He is personable and makes a great effort to get to know his students. He is very approachable and I would highly recommend taking his ochem series! The homework isn't required but I would suggest doing the homework because it helps to better understand the material. Going to every class is a must as well because so much information is covered. Plus you get to hear all of his fun facts and jokes when you go to class! Dr. E gives you many opportunities to do well if you work for it, and it is most definitely worth it.

Eagon is the best instructor you can have for lab. Compared to my instructors for 316/317, Eagon is by far the best. He is willing to help you, but also willing to challenge you (as in, he won't just give you the answer, he'll ask you questions and help you come up with the answer). He makes lab both fun and interesting. He makes running your first column (which is a challenge initially) easy. He lets you use your notebook for quiz/final! I found this to be awesome and helpful. Knowing that I can use my notebook for my quizzes, I work hard to keep my notebook up to date, with perfect notes about the procedure and answering all the questions throughout the lab. I now have a consistent notebook for 319 that I can use in the 400 level chem classes for reference. Unlike my 316/317 notebooks, which suck. The best part is that he does not grade on yield. So if you mess up and ruin your product at some point in your experiment, he'll be okay about it, because he understands that not everyone in there is going for a PhD in chemistry.

This class was great!! I'd totally recommend to anyone. Dr. Eagon's lectures are funny and entertaining while also being organized and educational. He doesn't take attendance and the class grade is based on two (long) quizzes, two projects, a midterm and the final. I got 100% on both projects and did very well on all the tests using nothing but the notes I took in class to study. 10/10 would recommend Dr. Eagon
