Trying to help out the people who read the polyratings above but DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFFESSOR. Treats the class like high schoolers and is a complete jerk. The dude gives a quiz every class because he knows no body will come to class otherwise. Never have I had a class where I dreaded coming to each and every day like this one, Save yourself and take a different professor.

Dickinson is the man! Presents information very well and is very personable. Super cool guy and he makes a pretty tough subject manageable. He loves the Dodgers, so wear some blue and he will love you. Also, I just decided to write this review because I was walking through campus and saw him driving by in his car. I haven't had him for over a year, but he recognized me from a far and waved to me from his car to say hi. Pretty solid guy in my opinion.

What a great guy! Probably one of my favorite classes at Cal Poly. Definitely recommend him. If you show up to class and pay attention, you'll get more than your money's worth.

Dickinson utilizes a distinct sense of humor, that is sarcastic at times, while dry at others to teach his students. He presents his material exactly how he will test you on it, so if you put forth some effort to study for quizzes, midterms, and the final, you will finish the class just fine. This was one of the first classes I took when I got here to Cal Poly and I didn't know how great of a teacher he was until I took some other courses. Dickinson didn't create the deepest personal relationship with me, but he did develop a relationship to the point where I can say he is my friend and he truly wanted me to learn and do well in his class. On the midterms, he gives you the "essay questions" prior to the test, so you can prepare yourself adequately. This guy is great. Recommend to any and all.

Go to every class, take very good notes of everything Jeremy writes on the chalkboard, and you will do fine in the class. There is assigned reading before every class. Plato was the easiest to understand but the other two philosophers were difficult. But it was fine because Jeremy presents the ideas very well. Midterms were multiple choice, true or false questions. 1 essay where you chose from a list of topics. No quizzes or homework other than reading. As long as you supported your argument, you got a good grade. He gave me a 95 on a paper about Socrates. To be honest, I heard bad things about philosophy courses so to be cautious, I decided to take it Credit/No Credit. I probably got a high B at the end of this class with some effort in the class. Take him for the C2!!!

Hands down the best GE professor I have had at Cal Poly. He genuinely wants his students to get a good grade in the class, and if you show up then you will. He had weekly in class writings that just required you to pay attention in lecture, which was easy to do since he made it so interesting and relevant. The readings are pretty hard to follow and he doesn't really expect you to understand them or even really read them, since he goes over them in class and teaches them to the class in a way that actually makes sense. He's also insanely passionate about his class which is so nice to see. He's also a really nice guy. Students were always talking to him about their personal life before class and during breaks, and he would listen like a friend, but then once class started he would go back to being the teacher. He didn't assign homework over Thanksgiving break which is appreciated. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!!!

Dr. Dickinson's class is, by far, the most incredible class I've taken at Cal Poly. He grades generously, and it's extremely easy to get a good grade in this course as long as you show up (don't take this course C/NC) and copy what's on the board to your notes. However, the teaching is extremely above average. He taught things in a simple manner, always making sure things were easy to understand, and class was always interesting. I felt like I learned more in this class than I did in my other three combined that quarter. In fact, because of this class, I've finally decided to make the leap from a physics major to a philosophy major, finding that I truly enjoy the subject matter at hand. Also, HORSE!

This man is a fantastic professor. If you show up to class every day and participate you will succeed. He presents the most verbose philosophies in an easy to digest manner.

Professor Jeremy Dickinson is awesome. He's a witty, intelligent, and an emotionally aware professor. He can be a bit of a hardass, but he is also very accommodating and he really makes the subject interesting and manageable. He wants his students to succeed and he does a good job answering questions and clarifying difficult topics. I really appreciate his teaching style. Day 1 of the week he lectures the whole time. Day 2 of the week he'll lecture for the first half/ two thirds of the class and then give a weekly quiz. Quizzes aren't too difficult and are based on the lectures from Day 1 and 2 of that week. I'd recommend taking his class if you want a low-stress and enjoyable Philosophy GE.

Jeremy is a really consistent and clear instructor. He definitely realizes that many students cannot afford to spend a ton of time on this GE class and really makes the material simple and easy to break down. He repeats what is important, such that we will remember those things when it comes to the weekly assignments. He also answers (most) questions, which I really appreciate. Some students didn't like how much time he spent on certain concepts or answering certain types of questions, but I think it really helped me remember things beyond the day we covered it in class. The class grade is composed of an easy weekly "quiz" on content covered in class and a final - no homework. Outside of class is technically recommended but you really don't have to do it to do well in the class at all. Overall, a really easy philosophy professor and class and I highly recommend you take him!

I thought this class was alright. I don't really care for philosophy, but Dickinson did a good job of going through the material in detail and making sure it made sense. However, the lecture was literally him talking at us for 2 hours, so it got boring pretty quick. The reading is basically optional as long as you pay somewhat attention in class.

I would not take this professor as anything other than credit/no credit. He is a great professor and I learned from him but because since he is a good professor, he excepts a lot from his students. He has weekly quizzes about the course material and an essay final. Unless you study for each and every quiz every week, I suggest taking is credit/no credit.

Really Cool Guy! Does a great job in lectures of slowing down and helping you understand the material. Was scared to take Philosophy but after this class I have a much different viewpoint on the subject thanks to him. Would highly recommend!

Jeremy is one of my favorite professors at Cal Poly. Always fun and funny to be around and readily willing to discuss philosophy on any topic with his students. I highly recommend him for any of his classes

He sits on his desk and faces us and lectures the whole time. He has no passion about the subject and just reads off the paper. He then tests us on the material every week, but he quizzes us on the material HE JUST TALKED ABOUT THAT DAY. How are we supposed to understand and comprehend the material and be able to get tested on it that day??? he is a horrible teacher.

I took this class for a GE requirement, and am happy with my choice. Jeremy presents the concepts well. He writes all of the main points on the board, so it is easy to follow the discussion. The class is very low in workload overall: 1-2 readings a week (no more than 10 pgs long), 3 midterms (multiple choice, can be tricky so know the material), and a 4 pg paper (very open ended). He also gives study guides before the tests. Overall, cool and easy class.

Professor Dickinson is AMAZING. I took this credit/no credit, but could have definitely gotten an A in the class if I wanted to take it credit (one of my hardest quarters, so decided to just take it CR/NC since there were no reviews on him). He really made me enjoy the class, probably one of my favorite classes I ever took. If you have to take a C5, take HIM! He's amazing. So thankful I had him before I graduated!

He makes the readings easier to understand, and has a good sense of humor. Very straightforward teaching, great for taking a GE. If he doesn't write something down on the whiteboard, it's not on the test. It's pretty tempting to skip class with things being so simple, but you can fall behind fast if you do. Just go to class, copy the whiteboard down, go over your notes and the study guide, and you can ace every test without studying for more than an hour.

Professor Dickinson is a very unique lecturer and can have a sense of humor at times; he often improvised (or at least knew his lecture material really well) with little regard from notes or power slides. From what I can remember this class consisted of two midterms, relatively short readings, occasional pop quizzes on the readings, a term paper, an assignment here and there, and a final exam. I enjoyed social ethics because my section was typically entertaining. I'd recommend Dickinson for any PHIL class that he teaches because he made an otherwise lackluster subject somewhat appealing.

Dr. J is amazing. Very clear at communicating concepts, yet does not refuse to go into the details when students are interested. Some classes ended with students continuing debates with him for an hour (don't do this to him!). Went to every class, payed attention, did the reading, got an A. Not too challenging but not a waste of time. This was a great class.

From my experience with him, it seems like he does not respect students. He ignored my email requesting to enroll in his class so I went to his office hours the next day to ask in person. He told me he couldn't answer that right now (why?) and he "might" respond to my email later. He said he had to decide whether to let me enroll in PHIL 336 because I would be missing foundational knowledge from PHIL 231. However, PHIL 231 is not even a prerequesite. Any other GE C2 would have let me enroll in PHIL 336. I also told him I could take PHIL 231 over the summer before PHIL 336. I emailed him again and he never responded so I could not enroll in his class. Very rude and apathetic.

Professor Dickinson is maybe the least helpful professor I've had at Cal Poly. He comes off as callous, egotistical, and belittling. Take someone else if you can. I'm doing pretty well in the course as of now, but he has never once actually helped me when I've gone up to him after class or emailed him.

He is probably the worst professor I have ever taken at Cal Poly. He doesn't present material clearly. He expects you to agree entirely with his opinion or else you will be shot down. He is unapproachable in office hours. He is just an overall terrible professor, and he made this class a lot harder than it needed to be. He should pick a layout and stick to it instead of experimenting and letting half the class suffer because of it. Pathetic. Also i have never written one of these before... and I'm a junior. So you know it's bad.
