Great lecturer. Really knew his stuff. Workload consisted of a midterm, a 3-page essay, and a final. The essay I winged pretty hard and still got an A-. The tests aren't tricky or anything, just off of his lectures. Take him for easyish grade, learning about the time frame, and little outside work.

This guy is the man! I'm an mechanical engineering student, and never had the patience or desire to learn about history. This professor totally turned my view on history upside down. He is a fantastic lecturer. He is one of the funniest teachers I've had, and he always knows how to spice up his lecture. His presentations were so entertaining I found myself looking forward to his classes, which doesn't happen much for me. His tests are really fair, and I got an A without too much effort based solely on the fact that he's such a good teacher, you don't really have to study that much outside of class. Anywho, any levelheaded person should take this professor. Anyone who does not want to take this professor is likely a terrorist, and should be avoided.

Carver is an amazing teacher! This is how a GE teacher should be and honestly one of the best teacher I have had so far. He makes lecture interesting and entertaining and gives a straight forward study guide and test. There is one paper and it's easy to do well on it if you email him and make sure your on the right track or talk to him about it in office hours.

Mike (yes he prefers to be called Mike) is the BEST guy. He actually made a GE interesting, was funny and super flexible, often postponing quizzes and not taking role for days when he thought no one would show up (ex: before thanksgiving break). The only graded assignments were a couple of 5 question quizzes, a midterm, one final paper and a final test. He even gives the essay questions ahead of time. Perfect way to fulfill a GE requirement

Michael Carver is the George Washington of today only with better hair. This man is AWESOME. His accents he uses are hilarious and spot on, his lectures are easy to follow and really funny, and the only person more intelligent than Michael Carver was the person who chose to hire him. He understands that we are all busy and if you talk to him he only wants to help. If I was 10 years older, my life goal would be to become best friends with him. I don't do polyratings, but for Carver I felt like I had to. I couldn't have asked for a better history professor because of his humor, fairness in grading, and understanding that this class is a GE and majority of us don't want to be there. Carver actually made me enjoy learning about history (for the most part, because some history is just too dry and boring), and sympathized with us because many of us didn't care. He doesn't worry about you knowing the dates of events and such, just more the "why" of history and its relevance to events today. He's one of the greatest teachers I've ever had and definitely knows his stuff. Take his class, I guarantee you won't regret it. Also his tests are fairly easy and if you just read his notes (you don't have to take notes!!!) you'll ace the tests.

This professor is legit as hell. He is a gifted speaker and does well carrying the class morale through some of the heavier subjects like the great depression. Carver is probably one of the best teachers I have had! I was lucky as a freshman to get blocked into his class. He is very knowledgeable, funny, and overall the class is not difficult. He understands that we have other classes that are more important to us. We did not have to write a paper which was great! He is such a funny guy and really wants his students to do well. The only downfall is that I purchased the book for his class but I did not actually need it for any of the quizzes or tests. Overall he is probably one of the best people ever! Go Big Mike!

Carver is the best first experience to a college GE professor. He's got a unique sense of humor, and at some points lectures like it's stand-up. Carver is definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had. He understands that the class is a survey & general ed and that you don't necessarily want to be there. He doesn't act like this class is your most important class. His lectures aren't super boring, and he always adds his own personal (and often colorful) comments. He's super nice and funny in general. We only had 5 quizzes (which often took < 1 minute to complete), one midterm, and one final (which was not cumulative). In my opinion, this was an easy and stress-free class, so I HIGHLY recommend Carver's HIST 202 class.

I took his class last quarter and damn he is my favorite professor of all time. Class is usually two hours long but it isn't much of a problem in his lectures. He thoroughly accepts that being a student may be difficult and works around his own schedule to suit yours. Carver is the man. He makes history so fun and hilarious when it needs to be. He is always bringing humor into class to lighten the mood of a general ed class. Make sure to go over class lectures and take notes. When the study guide comes out make sure you know the general points about each topic and you'll be set. IF YOU ARE TRYING TO CRASH: If you are trying to crash just go to class everyday and ask him at the end of class if you can get in. Waitlist doesnt mean anything to him. Its based on if you attend class and are actually participating. Give him a couple weeks to get you a code because he usually has to clear with the board to go above the class limit which he fights for. I think he was a good 10-20+ over limit in my class but there was still seats for everyone.

Carver is the greatest teacher I have had here at cal poly. His lectures are informative and useful. I could listen to this guy talk for hours he is really entertaining. He does a lot of stuff that makes life easier for his students but harder for him like not requiring a Scantron or Bluebook because he always forget them when he was a student. He even gave his students different options on when and how they take the tests. I definitely have greater understanding of US history and fell like I have actually gained something from taking this class which i can't say for all of my classes. Take Carver, crash his class or just sit in on it its worth it.

Carver was one of the best professor's I have had at Cal Poly. He understands that you have other classes. I think I studied about 6 hours before each exam and that was it. Easy Quizzes and manageable tests. This quarter he did 3 versions of the final- M/C, essay and free response. I took free response and since I looked at the study guide, it was super easy. I feel very lucky to have had a class with Carver, he genuinely cares about the needs of his students and wants everyone to do well. This is my last quarter at cal poly and I couldn't be happier that I chose to take this course. As a very logical, scientific and analytic person, history has never been my strong point. However, Professor Carver made every day enjoyable with his witty remarks, quick banter and his ability to make a story of each little history fact. Look, I've been seein a lot of posts about Carver on this site and I wanted to set the record straight on the man. Will he threaten to "carve you up"? Yes, the man has a penchant for blood like I've never seen. I mean he really is clinically insane. But this is insignifant when you consider how good of a teacher he is. His lectures are amazing and I haven't learned this much in any other class at Poly. Carver has an unprecedented poly rating for a reason! He continuously made class interesting and one time on a nice day we even had class outside where he told us all to "run or get carved up." Mike is absolutely the greatest! He wants every student to succeed and this is evident in the way that he presents his class material. He makes it very clear what he expects you to know on the midterm and final by providing study guides. If you pay attention in class, you can easily get an A. He sometimes even rounds up grades (I ended the year with an 88.9 and he still gave me an A-)!!!! He has weekly online quizzes but they are very easy - I got 10/10 on every one - and they can help to boost your grade a few points by the end. I would highly recommend this class if you need GE or elective credit because Mike is seriously one of the best professors.

Take him!! I had to take this class as a GE and he made it fun and basically stress-free. The material was a little boring to me but he is such a great and funny professor. He understands that we have other classes and that most of us are just here because it's a required GE, so he was willing to work with us and help us in any way he could. For the midterm and final he gives you a really helpful study guide that tells you everything that's going to be on the test. Just study that and be semi-attentive in class and you'll be fine. I ended up with an 88.9 but he rounded it up to an A-!

Carver is the best!!! I genuinely looked forward to going to his class every day. Your grade in the class depends on weekly 5-question online quizzes, attendance, a midterm and a final. The midterm and final are the exact same structure- 50ish multiple choice questions and then 5 short answer problems. The short answer problems were super easy because he gives you 8 people/places/events to choose from and then you only have to write about the 5 you remember the best. He made learning about history really fun and he was HILARIOUS every single lecture (especially the last class and talking about Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky-lol). 10/10 would recommend taking this class as a GE!!

Dr. Carver, or Mike as he liked to be called because "Dr. Carver" sounds like a serial killer, is amazing and one of the best teachers you could possibly get, especially for a GE class. First, he recognizes that the classs you are taking is a GE and that you probably don't want to be there or put in much effort to pass the class. Your grade is based on easy weekly online 10 point quizzes, the midterm, and the final. There are no essays, and you definitely do not need to read the (online) textbook to pass the class. Everything on the tests are based on his lectures and he gives a study guide of everything that could possibly be on the test beforehand. Mike is also HILARIOUS, super approachable, and really willing to adjust to students wants/needs. Every time he said a cuss word in class, he tallied free points to give us on the midterm/final, and throughout the quarter he canceled 3/10 quizzes for almost no reason at all. I LOVE this guy.

Carver is an amazing lecturer. Quite possibly one of the best orators I have ever had the pleasure to experience in my entire life.
