With Beaman's help you will become an excellent communicator. The assigned speeches are not meant to be memorized and presented from behind the podium. Instead, your speeches will be like extended conversations with the audience. Although an A is hard to achieve, here's how to get one in this class. 1) Don't memorize the speeches - know the three main ideas you are going to talk about and let your personality fill in the rest. 2) Be genuinely enthusiastic about the topics you choose and show it - She will give you high marks for this. If you are excited about what you're saying so is your audience (and the teacher). 3) Interact with the audience - pose questions, get them involved in any way possible. If the audience is entertained and interested, you will get high marks. Make sure you don't pass up the opportunity to take this class. ----

Ronda is the BEST teacher at Poly! If you still have to take speech, then take her! Going into the class, I thought I was a pretty good speaker, and that I wouldn't learn anything, but I ended up learning a helluva lot! I actually looked forward to going to her class. She is peppy, spirited, caring, really makes learning to be a better public speaker fun! The speech topics are really fun, everyone in your class becomes your friend, and most importantly, she treats all students with great respect. Don't expect an easy 'A' though. There is no busy work to help your grade. You are graded by you effort and improvement. So if you don't actually try to get better, it will be obvious to both the class and the teacher. If you try to be better, this will be your favorite class by far!

I have only had one quarter here at Cal Poly, but i can say with confidence that Dr. Beaman is one of the best professors here. Her teaching style is original and effective, much like her personality. I know speech is a class a lot of kids dread, especially shy students, but by the end of the quarter EVERYONE had totally improved and seemed way more comfortable speaking in front of the class. It's rare to find someone this passionate and full of energy in a subject like speech. If you can, definitely take her for scom 101.

Ronda is awesome! she is one of the best teachers i have ever had because she cares so much about her students and the material. she only teaches one class so if you can get her you are EXTREMELY lucky. The class is a lot of fun and you get to know everyone in it, so we always ended up doing crazy speeches. Ronda grades fair, and recognizes effort even if your not that good at public speaking. Take her but only if you are willing to care as much about the class as she does, and you won't have any problems.

Rhonda is the most incredible woman I have ever met, and this is by far the best class I have ever taken. Everyone loves her, and everyone loves the class. She realizes that public speaking can be difficult, and she doesn't require you to be perfect. I didn't list my grade because I haven't recieved it yet. However, she is a very fair grader and I am confident that I will get the grade that I deserve. You should really take this course. There isn't any unnecessary busy work, and you will really get a lot out of it. TAKE HER!

I don't think anyone walked away from my 7 am speech class disappointed. She is willing to help and really cares about her students, not that they walk away with an A and happy, but that they walk away having learned something... something fun, different, and useful. She grades you not on how well you can remember facts about speaking, or how perfect your speech was, but rather how you improved from speach to speach. Her grading is both honest and reasonable. Though the class is not difficult, don't go in expecting to breeze it off. The people who did best in the class are those that showed the most improvement and showed the most creativity. She is extremely personable, and gets to know everyone in the class. Not many classes I look forward to... ESPECIALLY ones that are early in the morning. I'd take her 7 am class again in a heartbeat if I could do it all over again. If you want to have fun in speech, go for Dr. Ronda Beaman.

Ronda is absolutely awesome! I'm in her 7 a.m. class, and I must say that it's a class I don't mind getting up for! She is so energetic and highly experienced in the field of public speaking. She creates such a friendly environment too! She has 2 people volunteer to bring breakfast every morning so that it's one less thing we have to worry about that early. Ronda gives short quizzes on the reading maybe once every 2 weeks or so. They don't count for much at all and she gives you hints about the answers. She really takes the time to recognize each individual and their strengths/weaknesses and helps everyone improve on their speeches. We had to give a total of 5 speeches, one of which is a group presentation. She doesn't give a midterm or a written final (unless the class is really bad, which is impossible with her as a teacher). As a matter or fact, for our final we're all going over to her house in Avila and having a speech contest with her other class over breakfast! How great is that? She was even nice enough to invite us all to her house for Thanksgiving if we didn't have a place to go. Ronda is an amazing professor, and I know that she will continue to stand out in my memory as I continue on at Cal Poly. If you can manage to get in to her class, even if it's at 7 in the morning, TAKE THIS CLASS! You won't find a better professor for this class.

Professor Beaman is one of the most caring, thoughtful, and maternal people I have ever met. Every day I walked out of this class, (on public speaking, which is not one of my favorite things) I felt as if Cal Poly was giving me a gift to counter all the stresses of college life. Ronda is the only person who can make an SCOM class at 7:00 AM, yes that's right, 7:00 AM, and make it into the brightest part of your day. I concede that I will never be a great public speaker. But Ronda made everyone feel like they could do whatever they wanted to do in life, that we matter, and she explained how people really love you for your flaws. I took this class last year, but it has really stuck with me. Professor Beaman is an inspiration and a great teacher of living life in front of other people.

I don't know if I took a different Ronda Beaman then all you people, but I left this class feeling completely connived. She gave us all this inspirational crap and talks on self impowerment and how much she loves us when all she really wanted to do is feel better about herself. She picks favorites like no other. She kept telling us she wanted us to "become more like who we truely are" and she was all hippie and liberal, she just wanted the underdogs to suceed. The people who were naturally good public speakers, she shut down. All you people who hated this class as much as I did, please get to work on writing ratings and get rid of the ridicuous 4.0 that she has.

Ronda is the best teacher I have ever had!!!! Everyone in my class loved her!! i learned a lot of about public speaking, not the boring book stuff though. She taught me confidence. It really isn't scary to give a speech in her class. I don't know what these students below are talking about. She deserves the 4.0. You will walk away from this class knowing how to give a good speech and you will have memories that you will never forget. I will never forget Ronda's class. If you take her you will learn about public speaking and about life, valuable lessons on life and bestof all you will have a new friend. Ronda is a friend to all of her students. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! You would be foolish not to try to get into Ronda's speech class, although you usually have to take a priority to even get into one of her classes. 7 am class feels like nothing when it is Ronda's class. If you want to be excited everyday to go to class (which you will be) and if you want to learn everyone's name in the class and basically make 30 new friends for a quarter (you will) then take Ronda. It is easy she did not have us take any written quizzes and no papers to turn in, only short outlines. Visual Aids are very important and so is moving TOWARDS the audience while you speak. If this sounds like you then take her, and if it doesn't you should take her anyways, I know you will love the class !!

Very motivational, changes the way you think about speech. She even renames the class as "Person Sharing" instead of "Public Speaking". She demonstrates how communication is key to everyday life in our society, and really looks at the big picture. She appreciates creativity, uniqueness, and organization. She breaks many of the conventions of conventional, upright, boring podium speeches with notecards. We were taught to connect with our audience by walking among them, using our brains and personality instead of memorizing note cards, and creating professional looking presentations. Good class to take to learn about life in general, as well as communication. She is a very happy person, and IF YOU PUT IN THE EFFORT you can get a lot out of the class. Nonetheless, her grading was extremely tough; Rhonda will help you as much as possible, but your speeches must be worthy of a standing ovation to even think of an A.

Dr. Beaman was a really great teacher, funny, very motivational, and tried as hard as she could to reach out to her students. She cares about each and every one of her students, wants everyone to succeed and is always happy to help. There are never any tests, essays, or notecards to prepare. The only writing you will be doing is the "once-in-a-while" quiz (which are easy) and simple outlines for a speech every now and then. Beaman doesn't allow notecards or papers when you go up to present. It sounds hard, but it's really easier than you think, because you'll be presenting on topics that you already know about, or care about. If you prepare your speeches and practice, you'll do fine. Don't expect an easy A. As someone already mentioned, the "A's" demand a standing ovation. This may sound impossible if you hate public speaking, but is doable. I absolutely HATE speaking in front of classrooms and get all nervous, but managed to pull a B+ in the class. The first couple of speeches may seem daunting, but you'll get the hang of it, since Beaman really tries to make you feel comfortable. You'll learn a lot in her class -- not just in terms of public speaking, but about life in general. Yeah, this sounds corny, but you'll be secretly wanting to go back to her class...even if it's 7 in the morning! If you have a choice for a teacher, CHOOSE BEAMAN!!!

This is one of the best prof's I have had at Poly. She made the class feel like a family and didn't judge you. I really recommend talking speech from her. But to get an "A" you should come into the class pretending to be shy and afraid of speaking and then build youself up to be awesome. She grades a lot on improvement and creativity. I dont get how this teacher has a 4.0 rating...i mean her class was fun and all but i didnt learn jack about giving a better speech. I didnt really learn anything i didnt already know on how to structure specific types of speeches, but the one thing i did learn is that she considers your visual aids to your speech more important than the speech itself. So make sure you make extremely good visual aids to get an A in the class. And she always gives these annoying, sappy speeches on how you should live life to the fullest, how its too short to be sitting around not doing anything...give me a break, i'd rather learn how to give a better speech than listen to her whine about her philosophy on life. She totally favors people, and if you're not a good speaker to begin with (like i was/am) you're going nowhere in this class.

Dr. Beaman is a nice lady and a pretty good speech teacher. I think she really misses her own children, so she uses her students as if they were her own kids. If you take speech with Rhonda you will quickly learn that it's not really about speeking a certain way, but rather learning to communicate effectivley with your own style. She is not set on everyone presenting the same way. She wants to see you grow and change as a speaker. There are 4 graded speeches and nothing else: this matters to me, how to, persuasive, and the final group speech. That's correct, no written midterm or final. You can't use notedcards, yes, you can't usenotecards. I was freaked out to because I suck at speaking. But it made me a better and more confident speaker. It forces you to know your topic which in turn makes you less nervous and easier to speak. If you want to walk out of speech with more than a memorized list of terms take Dr. Beaman. She's a professional and she knows what she's doing.

I didn't like her class. I didn't like her teaching style. She made me feel uncomfortable. And yes, she did have favorites and everyone knew who they were. I was actually excited about this class based on the high ratings, but I was very disappointed. By the way, you are not allowed to use notes on any of the speeches which made it difficult for me personally. I never understood her grading system because I don't think there was one. And lastly, it was definitely NOT worth getting up at 7am, contrary to what other people may think.

She is horrible...really corny...and loves to pick favorites....if you love sucking up to a professor, then pick her...for one of our speeches we had to drive to fucking atascadero and talk about horses..and the worst part--she didnt even bother showing up. also, all quarter she makes a big deal about not using notecards, but at the end of the year "speech off" when she told us her poem, she didn tbother memorizing it...instead she had to read it...biggest hypocrite ever....AVOID HER

Student's who talk down about Beaman are dark and sad people. Seriously, this class will change you life. She doesn't run her class in a boring routine way, she has her own unique style. She is a professional speaker herself, she travels all over the world to give speeches to businesses and individuals. She is great at what she does, talks to you like you are a person, and approached every task with enthusiasm. If you care about building a relationship with a wonderful women or your education at Cal Poly, take her.

Wow, let me start by saying: major dissapointment. She is not inspiring and not interesting. I accepted getting up early in exchange for a great class experience. Don't do it. It is not worth it. If you want someone great take Stauffer. She is the real deal. My friend had her class and I wish I could have changed in time. If you want to go to a mediation class, this might work. If you want to learn how to speak - well- this will not. Have fun with your selection. Everyone has a different taste, but this one left a bad one in my mouth.

Ronda is an amazing professor. Coming into her class, I was new to Poly, HATED public speaking, and definitely had no desire to take a speech class. However, it was required, so I did. I can't say that I'll make a career out of it, because I still don't find it enjoyable, but I am now a competent communicator and will use the skills I learned in her class in the workplace.

So here's the deal....in a lot of classes you take at college, you have to sit through the MOST boring presentations because the presenters are HORRIBLE and just don't know how to communicate their points effectively. I can promise you, that if you take Beaman, you will never be one of those people that just flat out suck at oral presentations. She spares no expense for our education when at the same time she grades each student at a personal level. She is one of those teachers that really wants to see that you are trying. Dr. Beaman was the best teacher I have ever had in my entire life! With COMS 101 classes that my friends were taking, they would always be studying for tests and memorizing definitions. However, with Dr. Beaman, we learned by actually doing. She was always energetic and fun and even though I had class at 7 am twice a week, it was totally worth it. I always loved going to her class and am really going to miss it. We had speeches and a few small quizzes, but there was no midterm. Plus, the best part, we didn't have a real final. Instead, we had improptu speech debates with her other class. I recommend this class to everyone because she took the time to get to know us and was so helpful in showing us how to improve our public speaking skills! TAKE DR. BEAMAN if you get the chance because you will not regret it!

Note to those who hadn't noticed: SPC 101 is now COMS 101. Ronda Beaman is quite possibly the most charismatic, enthusiastic, talented teacher I've had in quite some time. She presents the class material in a easy-to-follow, entertaining way that draws on her many years of experience in the field. Speaking of her years of experience, have you Googled her yet? You'll see what I mean. Too lazy? here's a preview. http://www.secondwind4you.com/ronda.htm Her books on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books&field-author=Ronda%20Beaman&page=1 In short, she knows what she's talking about. I for one was not afraid of taking public speaking, having had lots of experience, but I saw classmates go into the class scared to death and leave more confident and better prepared for any sort of speech. A definate must-take!

It is so clear that she posts her own evaluations. There is always a response to a bad comment. She must be pretty insecure about hearing the truth. This "fake" buzz is not right way to go. I thought her class was o.k. I was not looking for a life altering experience, and I was able to survive this required class without converting to Ronda-ism. Be cautious of the times she teaches - it is well worth taking Erma Stauffer instead at a reasonable time as my roommate did!

Professor Beaman has got to be one of my favorite teachers so far, because she has such a bubbly personality, that i enjoyed coming to class. By the end of the quarter, i noticed i was much more confident with my public speaking abilities compared to the first day of class. We had quizzes, pretty straight-forward and if you studied, they were easy. We gave five speeches in her class and our midterms were our speeches. The topics were related to your opinions and you had to memorize them, but with this, i found that i could talk easier without a podium or note-cards. Overall, she is a wonderful professor, and she really cares about your speech abilities and notices when you've improves. If you had the chance, definitely take her!!

Dr. Beaman was an amazing professor! I came in, like I'm sure a lot of people do, dreading having to take a speech class. But I left feeling extremely lucky that I was able to have such a great experience with such a scary class. Dr. Beaman sets realistic expectations and knows how to connect with her students without making them feel intimidated. Even though she doesn't let you hold on to notes, she's open to letting you tape up notes to the backboard (but after the first and second speeches, she expects you to use no notes at all). But really, the class was set up perfectly and some of the best lectures I've ever heard came from her classes. One class, she walked in, told us she wasn't going to use her lesson plan for the day, and proceeded to talk to us heart-to-heart about life and how everything we do in life matters. Every part of this class was meaningful to me in some way. I'm sure not many people can say that about their speech classes.

If you have a bunch of free time and really are devoted to this class, you may enjoy it and get something out of it. But I can honestly say that every person in the class that I talked to said that this class is a waste of time and wished they could get out of it. Its just a bunch of pointless work.
