Chi, Haoyan  

The first thing you should know about Professor Chi is that she has an incredibly thick accent. Now that we've clarified that, let me start off by saying that she is very nice and puts a lot of effort into making sure she communicates herself and her material thoroughly. She follows the book very closely, so make sure you buy it. She provides practice problems which are similar to the ones on the quizzes. The quizzes, in turn, reflect whats on the two midterms and the final. There is one homework assignment per week, and its a pretty small chunk of grade. You will be tempted to not do it. I'll tell you now, do it, because it will be on the quiz. If you can past the language barrier, she is a good teacher, follows the syllabus, and makes herself available to her students. I would reccommend her for your Math GE.

Professor Chi is very sweet and very caring towards her students. Although I never took advantage of office hours, she always encouraged people to go and even went out of her way to extend them. She moves at a relatively fast pace but she doesn't ignore student needs. If students look confused, she spots it. Homework collections are mandatory as are quizzes. We had lots of those but it's was good because it meant our overall grades weren't exclusively based on midterms and the final. My only complaint is that she could be pretty unorganized with test dates and communicating some test material. Clarification was always needed and highly crucial to doing well. Overall though, she's a sweetheart who cares a lot about her students and making sure she does the most she can for them.

she has a very thick but entertaining accent and is reaaaally nice. she will go out of her way to help u and make sure you understand. I didnt really try or go to class often and ended up with a C.

Haoyan (Sarah) Chi does have an accent, but I don't feel it affected my understanding of the material in any way. She is very kind and walks you through the lessons, giving practice problems and even walking around and checking the students' work during class. For the homework, which is due every Monday before the weekly quiz, she only grades the front page. Disclaimer: I did take calculus in high school, so most of the material was very easy for me; however, the two midterms had problems that were significantly easier than the problems she assigns on the homework.

Ms. Chi is probably the most caring and reasonable instructor I have had here. She is extremely fair in the way her course is set up and she genuinely cares about her students and their understanding of the material. In class, she gives a definition followed by an example. After the example she gives the class an exercise to try on their own and walks around the class and helps anyone who got it wrong. The homework she assigns directly correlates with what she teaches in class. There are weekly quizzes which are almost exactly like exercises she gives in class, and her midterms and final directly reflect these quizzes. She is an extremely fair grader and gives plenty of partial credit. While she has somewhat of an accent, she is still understandable. I would definitely take Chi again and I recommend her class for anyone who struggles in calculus and wants an instructor who is intelligent and fair!

I really like Dr. Chi. She was very helpful, would stay if there was time after class to explain stuff, she's very knowledgeable, and writes all the notes on the board. My class was at 8:00 am so that was terrible and I attribute that a lot to my grade. She does a fairly thick Chinese accent that can be hard to understand. However, she says on the first day that if you have any questions or you don't understand what she says she'll repeat it for you. Take her class!!

First of all, Dr. Chi's accent is very clear and she would make sure that everyone understood the concepts and problems. Her teaching system involves introducing a concept and the necessary background information, doing an example problem on the board, then having the students complete a similar exercise problem. She would come around and help anyone who had any trouble. Then, she would complete the exercise problem on the board so everyone could understand how to do it. She gives lots of partial credit on quizzes and tests and the homework problems are not too bad. Dr. Chi is very kind and it is clear that she wants everyone to succeed. 10/10, would definitely take another class of hers.

She is absolutely wonderful. She does have an accent but it's not too thick. She tries really hard to help her students and does a wonderful job. Her tests were easy and reflected what she taught. You should take her

She's incredible. Does a lot of example problems so you understand the course material. Her practice exams for midterms and the final are almost exactly what the test will be. She only tests you on things she's done in class. Very nice during office hours as well.

Literally one of the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life. Professor Chi is very effective at communicating information in class. Everything she does in class will help you for the tests. She does multiple examples of each problem and gives lots of practice problems to make sure you know the material. She has an accent, but that is not a problem at all; you will always be able to understand what she is trying to tell you, and she communicates information exceptionally, better than other professors in my own opinion. You can really tell that she cares about all of her students. Professor Chi really does have a heart made of gold. She is always enthusiastic to teach the class, and she will go to great length to make sure you, individually, know what you need to know. Professor Chi is generally a very kind person and she wants to see you succeed. I've only met one other person in my life who is as kind as Professor Chi. If you can get her, take her class; I promise that you will not regret it.

Homie Chi is great. She's a super nice lady - very approachable and you can tell she cares about her students. Her teaching was straightforward (and usually straight from the book): theorem/formula, class example, individual examples. Tests and quizzes reflected what was covered in class / homework. Grading (including partial credit) was fair and equitable. Don't worry about her accent, it's slight and you get used to it really fast. I would definitely take Chi again.

Honestly the only reason I got a D was my own lack of responsibility. Sarah (Chi) made the class very easy to follow and she is very straight forward with her examples which derived from the textbook. Her examples she gives she will match what she puts on her midterm/exams. Overall, an excellent teacher who understands her students. If I wanted to continue on the math series I would choose her to teach me again!

Sarah is a very nice woman who knows math very well and explains it with ease. She does speak softly, so listen carefully or try to sit closer up. She is very understanding with students who struggle and never makes you feel bad. She does have a tendency to move from step to step a bit too briskly, so again, pay attention or just ask her to clarify. The homework load is very manageable, a weekly textbook assignment. One thing that I think is very important to know about her class is that the final is definitely harder than the quizzes and midterms; even if you get A's on the midterms, you may get a B on the final, so prepare more for the final. And for incoming freshman, note that all calculus classes at Cal Poly are taught without use of a graphing calculator so you will need to be able to comfortably do everything by hand.

Turns out this professor is a Finance Major. Now because of the that, I'm decently impressed that she was told to teach Calc 3. First off, heavy accent; the first couple days may take a while to get used to, but after you eventually understand what she says. Other than the accent, I'd say everything else about this teacher is what you expect from a math professor. Bunch of theorems and examples done during class. One special thing she does is walk around the class while you are working on a example. She'll actually walk around and help you if you look stumped. She's always also smiling, its adorable. She's also very helpful; she knows she has an accent and knows sometimes it can get in the way of her lectures, so to make up for that, she's very approachable. Always extends her office hours on test weeks. I took this professor because I was toward the end of the rotation. Overall, I'd say she's good for Calc 3. Not the best I've had my 1st year, but know that you'll be okay if you get her as a professor.

Chi's way of presenting material is different than what I'm used to from math teachers. In almost every class she would give us a definition or a formula, show us an example and then have us do an example. This process would repeat for every new formula that we needed to learn for each chapter. Based on her class, I don't understand why people complain about calc 3 being the worst of the calc series. She doesn't test on material that she has not given an example of in class which I really appreciate. I'm not sure if she is the best teacher that I have had at Cal Poly but I think that she was a very good teacher.

She is super sweet and even with an accent, everything she explained was very clear. She gives you exercises to do in class which are really helpful. She was always open to answering questions in class (which could get a little annoying because students might take up like half of class with questions but it wasn't a big deal). The homework she gave was pretty reasonable and it helped but you do get graded on it which can either help your grade or hurt it. She is one of the bast calc teachers I had

Chi is a super sweet professor. you can tell she really cares about her students and really wants everyone to succeed. she presents material in a very logical orderly way building on itself very well. for every point she follows with an example as well as a practice question which really helped ingrain points and solidify understanding without too much extra practice. she also gives you credit for homework which is SUPER NICE for a college course giving you even more incentive to complete it. could at times explain points more thoroughly (how things relate to each other, where formulas derive from, and the real life significance and application of the material being taught) but for such a high level calc class i felt i understood the material pretty well. does have weekly quizzes and midterm exams on Mondays which gives you time on the weekend to study, however you dont have the benefit of friday quizzes while the subject matter is still fresh. overall a great calc experience.

Professor Chi is truly one of the nicest people I have ever met and is a wonderful professor! She truly cares about all her students and is always more than willing to help in any way that she can. She gives you tons of practice problems for the midterms and final, and the actual problems on the test are very similar to these. She does have a bit of an accent, but it is not a problem at all and you can understand her very easily after a few days of class. If you get the opportunity to take her class, do not hesitate!

Never have I felt so relaxed in a college course. Usually Calc is stressful for me because it takes a while for me to absorb concepts, but Chi really makes it easy and straight forward. I wish she taught more classes because I would take her again

I am so thankful I got put into Sarah's class. She is extremely nice, very approachable, and always willing to explain a concept or let you argue for points on a quiz. Her class is very straight forward and presents the material very clearly and if you take good notes and do the examples, you'll be fine. She does have a Chinese accent, but it's really not that bad; if you can't understand her, you are not trying hard enough. Quizzes every Friday are fair, with two midterms and a final, homework is assigned but not collected. Never went to her office hours but I know she worked with a lot of students individually. Take Sarah if you want a Calc 3 class with minimal stress.

I love Sarah (she goes by her American name for ease), she's a very sweet person and has an excellent personality for a teacher. She has a moderate accent and soft-ish voice, but you get used to it, try and sit near the front if you can't hear very well. At first I thought she went kind of fast through lectures, but I think I've gotten used to it---she covers a lot of example problems and sometimes doesn't go through the algebra on problems, which is understandable for the most part, but it is good that she covers a lot of examples. She also walks around the class while we're doing example problems and will correct you or explain something to you if she sees you do something wrong, which is nice. FYI, If you don't have a strong foundation in calculus, you might have difficulty with this class, if you do have good understanding from Calc 1/math 141 this will be straightforward for you; I'm essentially retaking calculus (I took Calc AB in high school and didn't pass the AP exam) so I have a pretty strong foundation and its not difficult for me once I start doing problems. Overall, she's a good teacher, she doesn't give you crazy hard questions on tests or quizzes, and she tells you to not simplify answers if you don't have a calculator like on the midterms and final. I would recommend her for this class and perhaps any other calc class.

I FUCKING LOVE THIS MATH TEACHER. She's so chill and presents the material very well. The whole class you just learn the formulas and do practice problems which is by far the best way to learn math. Last quarter in Calc one I barely passed with a C- but this quarter in Calc 2 I was just 10 points away from an A-. She gave me the first A on a math test I've gotten in years! The test averages were high B's so it's not just me doing well in that class. Take her if you can!

Sit in the front of the class!!! She has a semi hard accent to understand and likes to talk facing the board. It's best if you pay attention 100% of the time. I am very good with numbers and good at calculus, so this class was basically review from high school and came easy to me, but I know many people who failed or barely passed the class. She gives quizzes roughly every other week and they aren't too difficult as long as you pay attention to the examples in class and do the homework. Exams are somewhat difficult, but like I said calculus isn't too hard for me in general, so it depends how you are with the subject.

While she does have a bit of an accent, that wasn't really a problem for me. My main gripe with her (and I haven't had this problem with any other teacher so far) is that I cannot read what she writes on the board half the time. And she will only say half of the problem while she is writing it. Multiple times, this has led to me copying down a problem from the board to do, and it being much, much harder than it was intended, because I read it wrong. My roommate who took the class with me had the same problem, so it's not just my eyesight. In spite of that, the homework assignments were spot on for material you needed to know, so I still did fine on tests since I did the homework. And she wasn't a super hard homework grader - half the time I'd only do like 3/5ths of the homework and still get an A on it. She definitely knows the material though, I went into her office hours a couple times with clarifying questions and she was very helpful. Overall, if she's your only choice I wouldn't avoid taking her class, but you'll definitely need to put in some work

She has a little bit of an accent which was fine with me. She is the sweetest person in the world. She only assigns odd numbered homework! She tells you what will be on the quizzes/tests. She doesn't try to trick you. She gives in class examples and you also do examples in class, which helps you figure out if you understand the concept. She isn't really into theory. She mostly tells you how to do things and use equations. This is good for me because I couldn't care less about theory. 10/10 would take again.

Professor Chi (Sarah) is the greatest math professor I've ever had. She made Linear Analysis seem so easy. I've heard other students in other classes complain so much and I don't blame them. I can understand how Math 244 can be so difficult. The coursework is fairly obscure. Sarah however, made the class so damn easy. She would never get into the conceptual, mathematical world of why things happen. Some students like to hear this kinda crap but usually this confuses me and makes me feel dumb when the professors go through proofs and whatnot. Instead, Sarah breaks down very concisely how to each problem in each section and she is very careful in making sure the students are following along. I have had her for Calc 2 and linear now, and those are easily my strongest math cources. If I had Professor Chi for every class, my GPA would be VERY high. Some students do have a hard getting past her semithick accent, but she addresses this day 1, and it honestly isnt that bad. I am great in taking notes in her class as well... I usually suck at taking good notes, but she makes things really easy. Pay attention in class, never miss a day, take good notes, and you will find great success

Alright, so I was ready to go all out for Prof. Chi, but the final gave me a change of heart. Linear was a very straight froward class because of Chi. Many of my friends hated their professors and I found myself not struggling at all. She literally told us what to expect on both midterms and all quizzes and then stayed true to her word. I received a 94 and 100 on the two midterms. Going into the final had a 98%, so I think you know I'd really have to mess up to not get an A or A- in this class. I studied a healthy amount for the final too just because I wanted to make sure I would do well. She rolls in and says I only want 2 or 3 students to get an A so I made the final really difficult good luck. Sure enough my grade falls to an 89.6 and I get a B+ no round up, even tried to talk to her about how I felt a B+ did not represent what I actually knew in Linear based on all of my midterms and quiz scores, she never responded. So, I was pretty upset considering I donated the class for 10 weeks and then got blindsided by the final.

Chi is a sweet woman. However, linear analysis is a completely new subject for almost all students (not calculus anymore!) and her accent, mumbling, and fast pace aren't a good combination for such a class. In her lectures she has examples (problems she shows you how to do) and exercises (problems you do on your own, and check during class). The only issue with that is that the examples and exercises just have changed numbers, and so they don't cover all of the homework problems. The homework is not too difficult and is due every Monday. Quizzes (on Mondays) are not incredibly challenging, but are not always like the homework, but moreso the examples in class. The first midterm is not too difficult (avg. this quarter was an 85) but the second midterm is more difficult by far. She doesn't curve the exams and she grades them very harshly (I got -3% from one problem because I said 60 instead of -60). The final is incredibly challenging despite her saying "it's not too bad" and I highly recommend studying a lot because she expects a lot from the students. She might be good for Calc III but she is not good for Linear.

Chi is a super sweet lady and she cares a lot about her students and making sure you understand what's going on in class. Sometimes she does make mistakes in class, but she is human and it's always a small algebraic error which is an easy fix. Her main focus is on the actual problems and being able to solve them rather than theory, theorems, and derivations, which I really like as someone who hates the latter. She does problems in class and then the homework gives you extra practice around the same difficulty level as her class ones, so doable and helpful. Her quizzes are based straight from class problems and sometimes homework, so it's easy to ace them. She also gives you a really accurate idea of whats on the midterms and again, they are similar type problems to the class and homework problems so it's not hard to do well on them. Also pro tip, if you got a problem wrong for something small, go talk to her in office hours because she will give you points back. Also, this class has some hard concepts regardless of your teacher, so I highly recommend not skipping class and Chi will say it too because it is ridiculously hard to teach yourself this stuff. Overall, Chi is awesome and super sweet and if you go to class and take good notes and of course, study, it is easy-ish to get a good grade in this class and you will 100% pass it.

Sarah is honestly one of the nicest professors I've had at Cal Poly. Her class is very structured and clear. She defines all terms and gives problems that she solves with us in class. The homework is class 2.0, the quizzes are class 2.5 and the tests are class 3.0. She always answers emails and stays after class to answer questions and is super approachable. She also drops the lowest quiz score which is great, because you have a quiz every single week and there are some chapters that are tough. Her averages on the tests were high because she explains everything well, and gives us every type of problem that is in the book, this means that there probably wont be a curve but you honestly dont need it. Overall, I would definitely recommend this class, and Prof Chi for any math class here. If you want to understand math and do well in the class, her class is definitely it.
