Babu is a genius and a hilarious professor and gets that no one wants to actually be learning bio, so he sticks to the basics. He is absolutely hilarious and will tell stories about his life and they are the highlight of my week and you will be laughing out loud. While he is a great person, the downside of this being a "joke" class to him is that he doesn't respond to emails and doesn't tell you how to study for his midterms and finals. I would recommend knowing the slides really well and reading the textbook (which is fantastic and easy to read) to supplement. Do not miss lecture if you're someone who has a hard time teaching themselves because it really is easy to just sit there and listen to what he's saying (slides are provided). If you work hard or are just good at memorization, you'll do fine in this class. It's very easy to get a B, slightly harder to get an A but doable. Great professor, would recommend for this class.

Babu is awesome. He presents the material concisely and holds the class's attention well with hilarious jokes and ridiculous stories. His test's are pretty easy too. I read each chapter, took notes on each lecture, and studied for a few hours before the tests and I was fine. The final was easier than the midterm in my opinion. He says he will deduct points for not going to class but I guarantee you he never did for anyone and I know that lots of people stopped going to class after a while.

Professor Babu makes a two-hour long lecture with no break go by super fast. His jokes and hilarious anecdotes not only keep the class engaged, but also help students to remember material, which can be difficult to do in a class that requires so much memorizing. He is an excellent professor with an excellent handle on teaching. He is happily willing to help any student who asks for clarification. Homework assignments and quizzes are given weekly and are administered online through Connect. This class is easy if you go to the lectures. Definitely recommend Dr. Babu!

Professor Babu really loves biology, it's plain to see from day 1 that he is there to teach because he loves it and he wants to. He know that most people take the class because they have to and isn't gonna drill you with work, he just wants the opportunity to educate you a bit on something he enjoys, which is good. He makes a lot of jokes and tries to tell some stories to make the class a little more enjoyable, his jokes are usually funny but sometimes his stories seem to drag on far too long which can be annoying if you just want to get information and get out, but he means well. He has a weekly online homework assignment and occasional quiz, that he takes a lot of exam questions from so that's the only thing really worth studying (never took notes once, just powerpoints in class and study homework), his exams are pretty simple. The only big problem is he chooses to dim the lights during lecture which makes it very easy to zone out or doze off, seemed like I was always fighting the urge to fall asleep, but if you have coffee or can stay awake during lecture the rest of the class is easy.

Babu is a super cool guy, definitely take this class. It's difficult/impossible for him to seek out students doing poorly due to the nature of the class (big lecture), but he is more than willing to help if you seek him out. Classes are very engaging and funny and tests are fairly easy, just make sure you study well because there are only 2 and they determine your entire grade! He realizes that most/all of his students wouldn't take the class if they had the choice so he does his best to make the class as painless as possible and does a great job. Easy A, you just need to put in a little effort.

Dr Babu knows a lot about bio...however, he does not understand that his class is not essential for engineering majors...... if you are a BIO major, you better take his class....otherwise, be prepared to memorize a lot and read like a lot.....It is a fun class, but is a lot of work.....And he just does not care if you blew up your first midterm,,,,,,, he will not curve!!! I would take this class at Cuesta or back at my CC..

Babu presents things very clearly, his tests aren't too difficult (all MC) and to top it all off he is a hilarious guy. I definitely enjoyed the whopping two BIO 213 lectures I attended over the course of the quarter, hence why i got a D. I am a Junior, I work, I have 300 & 400 level CE classes to worry about, so as much as I hate to get Ds, i must say I dug my own grave in this class. And frankly, I don't care, I got As in all my upper div major classes, just thankful I passed.

His homework is all online work which is pretty easy, BUT sometimes you'll forget to do them because he doesn't tell you when homework is due so you have to check the online website all the time. He makes you buy an online code to do the online program ($60 down the drain). I got a C+ on the midterm but B+ on the final so I thought I had gotten a B in the class. NOPE! I forgot to do one homework and that literally dragged my grade down from what I thought was a B to a C...This class is just a review of high school Bio and correlates with the materials from ENGR213 most of the time. Much harder than ENGR213 though. He makes you work for your grade even though it's just a 2 unit lecture class that meets once a week. If you want to stress out about a 2 unit class, take him. If not, don't bother.

This class is easy if you like Biology and Life Science... I'm an aero engineer, and not a bio med engineer. So this class wasn't entirely fun. It was interesting, and I would've definitely gotten a higher grade in the class by studying sooner, but you really just need to read the book. Lectures are totally optional- because you can get everything from the book.

Babu is the man. He is a great teacher and really interesting to listen to. He knows that not many engineering students want to take a Bio course so he makes it worth going to class with his hilarious tangents. He makes the course easy to get an A in, I just messed up on the final. You do have to spend about $70 to get an online homework program similar to Mastering Physics which is annoying.

Babu, Praveen is one of those teachers that expect you like know in depth about BIOLOGY. Obviously, almost 80% of the class is all engineering major that does not give a two-cent piece of shizz about your class. He makes this GE/elective style class which is 2 unit so harder than it needs to be. There is 1 Midterm and 1 Final (ALL MC Questions) & HW (you have to buy it from CONNECT and waste your goddamn money that you don't need to spent). If I was going to get A in the class then it was worth it, but this CONNECT site is so stupid and lazy for teachers. Teachers don't make any of the questions and they are all very difficult HW assignments that gave me such a hard time. He tries to make us interest in BIOLOGY, but seriously layoff our ass! Geez! You make this stupid class harder then it needs to be when we have other important classes that we need to worry about! The only good about this class was that he was actually Funny and tries to throw out jokes here and there which kinda lighten the class a little.

Babu was a really great professor for 213. The material is a lot of memorization, so his tests do require a fair amount of preparation but he is super funny which makes the lectures worth attending. He uses connect, which kind of sucks, but the homework was easy and the tests were straightforward. Take Babu for 213, put in a little effort, and you'll learn something and get an easy A.

Unavoidable curse. Mandatory for engineers and he's the only one for BIO 213. Terrible at presenting information and goes off tangent each lecture. What he does present does not match the self study quizes and homework. He forces you to use Connect, which costs near $100. You'll have to pay to fail his class. Worst class ever

where to start? I think to describe Babu, you have to understand that cool can be incarnated in the flesh. Example, he knows that drinking Coke is unhealthy, for a variety of reasons, namely because they can form kidney stones. This thug still drinks Coke even though he knows the chemistry of how unhealthy they are. Straight OG. His explanations of material are sufficiently detailed and also witty. I was sitting there thinking, maybe engineering isn't for me, maybe my calling is biology. I told the class a joke. He said, "Did y'all hear (so cool he said y'all) that Katy Perry adopted a cat?" He continues, "she named it kitty purry." Oh man, just another dimension of cool! This is another off topic, but relevant fact to his cool factor issue; the man knows how to shop for a watch. Sometimes I noticed he would do different poses just to show off his wrist bling. TAKE THIS COURSE!

Doesn't teach well. You'll have to self study the actual materal rather than listen to his ramblings that don't correlate to the homework. Why can't he use poly learn instead of the paid connect? I'll never know. To everyone else: Sure, he can be funny. However, who wants a clown as a teacher?

Babu knows most engineers don't care too much about this class, so he makes it as entertaining and gives you only the most important stuff to know. The material is similar to an easy high school bio class, nothing to stress about. I would recommend going to class because he will tell you what he expects you to know for the exams. The two exams were very fair, and the connect hw and quizzes were annoying but pretty easy. I probably put 1-2 hours into this class a week and studied a fair amount for the exams to get an A. However, you can pretty easily get a B with minimal effort. You get out what you put in. Babu probably had the funniest stories of any professor I've had yet, great guy!

Professor Babu is a great teacher. The class is not difficult, make sure that you pay attention in class because he will literally tell you what is on the final. As long as you do the online section of the class (it is worth it to pay the $70) you will do fine. Nice guy, definitely recommend him!

This guy is possibly my favorite lecturer since attending Poly. He speaks easy and gets the class rolling with laughter at least once per lecture. He presents the material in a straight-forward, "here's what to know for exam", way that can be picked up on even if you don't like biology. The exams are easy to study for and there is homework once a week that takes an hour or less. The only downside is he required an online homework program that was like $60, otherwise fantastic professor.

Babu is a solid bio professor. Like everyone else says, he knows that 213 is a class full of engineers that don't really know or care about bio. His lectures go at a reasonable pace, not so fast that you can't write everything down, not too slow to put you asleep. It's nice because he doesn't just read directly from his slides, he'll elaborate on points and makes it very interesting with little stories and jokes. The class is a large 2 hour lecture and homework/quzzes on this online service called connect. All the questions are on quizlet and are definitely google-able. His finals ARE DIRECTLY FROM THE TEXTBOOK. Look up the textbook questions on chegg and literally memorize the answers. It'll give you about 95% of the questions. All in all a fairly painless class with Babu

Prof. Babu was very straight forward regarding the presentation of the class materials during lecture and with his PowerPoints. The tests are pretty easy, but you will have to study the class materials from the online portion of the class and the textbook. The online class assignments are hard to complete, I continually got 80-85% on them for both the homework and quizzes. Prof. Babu has some great stories and he shares them during class which make it easier to sit through.

IMO this class is okay diffficulty-wise but a pain and a waste of time (that's just me cuz im an engr major that has done enough bio stuff at this point), but Babu's super cool and helped alleviate a lot of that!!! :) And pretty hilarious. He almost never smiles in class but he explains the material super well and randomly throws in hilarious and outrageously funny remarks and just goes "ANYWAY,....." and moves on like nothing happened lol. Willing to answer questions in class too. Had just online HW every 2 to 3 weeks (that was nice) and a midterm and a final. I just personally have no interest in bio details, but Babu's awesome. Always remember the Pee Pee MAT! :D

Babu is probably one of my favorite professors I've had at Cal Poly. Granted, I like his type of humor and I tend to like GE's more than support/major classes, but I really enjoyed the way he presented biology, a class that has never really been one of my favorite topics. He can be quite funny and his stories are GREAT (never forget the Russian intern and PPMAT). He is also very clear about explaining somewhat complex topics and prepares you well for the midterm/final (sit down and study the Connect homework/quizzes and the lecture powerpoints and you should be golden). A homework assignment from the (online) textbook or a quiz is due once a week on Sunday nights, but those require not much more than 1-3 hours per week, which is not bad at all. As people have said, he knows that we (engineers) mostly don't care too much about this class and usually honors that by making sure he doesn't waste our time (unless he's telling a story, but then I promise you you should be listening!). Large lecture of ~200 people. Take him! You'll enjoy it whether or not you enjoy the biology (which isn't always easy).

Being my first time writing a review here, it's clear Babu stood out. Even in a large hall (PAC) with a long, 2-hour lecture, this professor received a high attendance rate and the attention of everyone in the room. He is very thorough in his teaching and is easy to follow (granted you pay full attention). This alone is not enough to prevent students from ditching or sleeping, but it goes a long way when the professor is clearly motivated. What really impressed me is the way in which he presents the material. Amidst the content of the lecture he includes realistic, relatable topics, examples, and applications that students have actually heard of or witnessed (something other professors often try to include but do so poorly and thus are less effective). He also gets questions that sometimes aren't even necessary (curiosity-type), and answers them fully. This professor has way more knowledge than he has time to share it with everyone. Now the best part are his stories, pray that you get one every lecture. Usually the stories are the result of his digression from a topic, but these alone (if nothing else) are worth going to class for. Along with his jokes (and everything else, really), he has a talent for telling stories in an interesting and funny way that gets everyone's attention even if they were previously occupied on their phones/laptops. As for the workload, it's a weekly quiz and assignment that don't take a significant time at all. The multiple-choice midterm isn't exactly easy, but it asks the questions you'd expect (from class, and powerpoint lectures), so in that regards it may not be hard. Anyway this was a long evaluation but well worth it for somebody who deserves it. If I had to add more classes, I would consider looking for this professor despite no interest to involve myself in this field as a career.

Dr. Babu really knows what he's talking about, and loves it. Being in Computer Science I was not exposed to BIO that much and often dreaded it. I think if you don't go to class, you will not do well just because its bio! Bio itself is a very rigid and concrete subject that has so much to it, and if you don't take the 2 hours out of your day to go to class, that's on you. If you go to class and do the Connect homework, it makes his midterm and final very very doable. A lot of people says engineers can't do bio, and maybe that is true, but Dr. Babu really tries to make class very interesting and do his best to make engineers understand the content.

Really a great teacher and an interesting guy! He'll tell you a lot of cool stories in class, although sometimes I do wish he would keep them a bit briefer! A very good lecturer who moves through the material at a good pace and is good about letting students know directly what they need to know on tests. He has assigned homework and suggested reading, but as long as you take notes on class you should do fine on the homework. He also gives a huge amount of time to do each assignment. There's roughly 4 at home quizzes which aren't bad. The only other grades are a midterm and a non cumulative final. Overall a very good professor who understands that engineers don't give a damn about bio and will teach accordingly. Would recommend!

To start off I didn't go to class for 5 weeks and copied all the hw/quizzes from chegg... With that being said I had no idea what was going on in the class for the entire quarter. Fairly straightforward bio class with homework and quizzes that can be taken effectively with internet aid. First midterm was fair and what would be expected. I found the final to be unfair as it contained information not covered in class (questions exceeding material covered in book or lecture). Lots of questions on alleles, carboxylic acid, and R groups none of which were covered in class (Babu ran out of time in the quarter and told the class to focus on certain sections of the course). Biggest tip would be to go to class and write down everything he talks about. That's really the best way to approach this class, don't skip lecture and beware quizlets with wrong answers.

To start, the only reason I kept going to lecture was to hear stories about this guy's life. The class content is comparable to a high school level biology, and Babu recognizes that almost all of the engineers in the room have zero interest in how DNA is translated to RNA, and he teaches in an appropriate way. There is only online HW and quizzes, which are not terribly difficult and really due. The midterm and final do require some preparation, but if you cram the day of, you can expect to understand enough to scrape by with a high B or A in the class. Babu is a funny guy who attempts to keep engagement. He is the only option for professor, but I had to leave a review on how much I enjoyed his class.

Dr. Babu is a really funny, nice guy. For Biology majors his class was probably easy. I am a Psychology major and this human genetics course was a required support course for me. Dr. Babu assumes you know all the material beforehand. He goes SUPER fast and does ask if people have questions, but if people ask too many questions he pushes forward to finish the lecture, therefore leaving his students with material we don't understand. Like I said, he is a really funny, nice guy, but doesn't know how to approach this class to help everyone understand the material. There are three midterm like tests that are not cumulative, a final, and a paper. He grades the paper really easy as long as you wrote correct stuff and enough pages, and honestly the cumulative test was the easiest for me.

One of the best lecturers I've ever had at Cal Poly. I had this class from 7-9 PM Fall Quarter. This was my first time taking a night course, and I was worried that I would constantly have to fight falling asleep during class. Not the case at all - he is able to keep his students fully engaged during the whole 1.5 hours he keeps you in class. He would find ways to make each lecture entertaining, understandable, and incorporate his awesome sense of humor. His class was based off of 4 midterms, all of which were very fair and straight forward. I'll also admit that before taking the class, I was worried about having a professor with an accent judging by his name. Zero accent whatsoever!

Amazing teacher. Obviously you must go to class to pass his tests but his information is incredibly straight forward and well organized. He takes his time to assure that then whole class understands a topic before moving on and spends extra time when necessary to further develop ideas into full blown concepts. Dr. Babu is AWESOME! I'd highly recommend taking this class from him, despite it being from 6PM to 8PM. The material is super easy if you know genetics, and there aren't any homework assignments to worry about. He also gives extra credit questions and an assignment at the end of the quarter. Lectures do usually run the full 2 hours, but he sprinkles in funny stories and jokes that totally make it worth going. Personally I didn't use the textbook questions and just studied off the powerpoints, but I already know a bit of genetics so someone without any prior knowledge would probably benefit from reading the text and looking at the diagrams and such. The test questions also aren't always questions you can memorize the answers to, but with a bit of logic they are easy to figure out.

Dr. Babu is one of the best professors I have had thus far at cal poly. He has a great personality, and is extremely intelligent. If you have taken Bio 161 before, you will be prepared for this class and most of the material will be familiar to you. Listening to him teach, makes you wish that you learned the topics first from him because he explains it so well and has a way of getting the concepts through to his students. He is very helpful approachable and friendly in both office hours and in lecture. Go to his lecture! he explains things very well, and he has some pretty great stories he throws in there as well. Although the material is familiar to most people, his tests are not easy. Its not an easy A. The class consists of 4 tests (the final is just another test) which each contain material from 2-4 chapters. The final test was the hardest so if your grade is borderline make sure you know everything in detail for that test. This quarter he gave a few extra credit opportunities which totaled to 18 points. Some of them were from little pop quizzes in lecture, if you attended and the others came from a really hard book problem that you needed to explain in a typed half page. The extra credit points saved my grade and is the reason i received an A in the class.. another reason to go to lecture. If you have the chance to take a class with Dr. Babu, I would highly recommend him! he is amazing teacher and person.
