If you are taking going to ASCI 351 with Campos, then don't take any classes with Burd at the same time unless you want to not have a life. This class was basically 4 exams and a final (which is ridiculous since that comes to be about an exam every other week starting at week 3), roughly 7 quizzes and a research paper. He expects you to be able to read and understand 4 chapters from the book alongside his lectures and slides for each of his exams. By the end of the fourth exam you will have read the entire book. His quizzes are usually very short but they are extremely random in terms of difficulty as they are based on the pictures from the book and an entire quiz can be based on one diagram out of many. The exams are multiple choice along with two free response questions that are worth A LOT of points. The exams are fair enough except for his notorious true or false questions in which he would only change one word or add one additional breed to throw everything that you thought was correct to be wrong. The free response questions can either be drawing images or writing paragraphs or both. Expect about a half of the class to be getting C's and bellow on the exams. Campos as a person isn't terrible at all, he really wants everyone to learn and be prepared for vet school and he himself is very kind and funny. It's just how he teaches that really bothered me a lot since he did he have an accent which made his lectures difficult to understand at times. He does also like to speed through his slides since he assumes that the class has read the chapters beforehand. He does post his slides but if your the kind of person who skips class and just go over the slides, your going to be screwed since the slides have little to no written explanation on half the material there and he does put what he says in class on the exam. The labs in this class are legit. Expect them to be really fun and hands-on. There are also lab reports but they are not too much work. I got a C at the end of the quarter and I really had to study my butt off for it. "Remember this is a learning experience" -Campos (as he returns everyone's exam)

He is very nice and approachable but ASCI 351 is a hard class. You'll be expected to read 1 to 2 chapters each week and take a quiz on those chapters before the lecture is given those topics. There are 4 exams which can seem excessive, and a lot of his exam questions are tricky and specific. My advice is to keep up on the reading. DO NOT GET BEHIND and this class is totally do able. Go to lecture because he gives you information not given in the book and what he focuses on in lecture is what much of his tests are on.

Dr. Campos's class is not easy, and is incredibly worthwhile. You will probably study almost every day if you want to get a good grade. HOWEVER, Dr. Campos teaches in a way that emphasizes what's important, he is very helpful in office hours, he's entertaining, and you get to do amazing hands-on activities in lab. Don't expect to do well if you don't care about the material, but if you find repro-phys to be interesting (and it's incredibly useful) then this class is a blast. I kind of sold part of my soul to get an A, but as a pre-vet student I'm incredibly grateful to now have a solid foundation of repro-phys knowledge. The tests are fair, the quizzes are mostly straightforward, and don't procrastinate on your project paper. If you are an equine minor: take this BEFORE Dr. Burd's ASCI 333 class.

This class is hard. Like really hard. The class is worth a total of 1000 points. There are 4 midterms that are incredibly difficult and nitpicky. He tries to trick you by changing just a few words or having multiple questions about very minuscule topics that weren't discussed in detail. There are weekly quizzes to keep you on track (which were actually ok) but they are pretty random and deal mostly with graphs and diagrams. Having a midterm every 2 weeks was draining and by the end of the quarter I had read the entire book. His lectures were super hard to follow, powerpoints are just made of graphs and pictures so take notes (or just rely on the book). Only good part of this class were labs which were super hands on and very fun. Overall, I studied a lot, read the whole book, and still struggled to get a D. Crazy hard, no curves, not a great teacher, but a cool dude.

Dr. Campos is extremely enthusiastic about the course, however, he is just as unreliable. His powerpoints are difficult to understand, even when he goes over them in class. In the last week of class, he never showed up and made a grad student in charge of his office hours. Our projects were not graded on time, and the average test grade was a C or D, with no curve or extra credit. RIP GPA.

There is no doubt Dr. Campos' contributions to Cal Poly are vast and his knowledge even greater. I will celebrate with tears of joy when Cal Poly stops hiring researchers to teach classes, however. And that's just what this class is. You take a researcher who doesn't know how to teach- and make him in charge of whether students can progress to the next required course in their major. Well, I knew this was going to be a painful class. I can't tell you how many nights past 2am at Denny's drinking coffee I spent for this stupid class. Not to mention the subscription to the online polling service you need for the quizzes. And oh yeah, the expensive book (that I have scanned and made available for free to people as a PDF). This class was a pain to say the least. Here's what you need to know for the quizzes. He starts them the first minute class starts. There are 50 minutes or so of class. Yet this guy decides to start the quiz right at the onset of class. So it doesn't matter if you are driving from work, have 10 minutes to get from one class to the next or what have you. He will start his quizzes right away. There was only ONE day he started his quiz in the last 10 minutes of class. That was nice. Also, on the quiz: 90% of the questions are of EXACT images from the book and labeling structures, while 10% of the quiz questions will ask misc questions kind of related to the pictures but more...conceptual. Also, he only did this once but make sure you show up on Fridays. When enough students don't show, he offers quizzes on Fridays to award credit and punish other students who don't show up. Also, there is rarely enough time on his quizzes. There is no set amount of time per question. Usually you get 50 seconds for each question. He is of the belief where "you either know it or you don't." Therefore he moves onto the next question when about 48/57 people have submitted their answers. So don't rely on pity from him. Here's what you need to know for the tests/exams. They aren't impossible or very hard. The only thing that is hard about this class are the damn hormones and how they affect other hormones in the animal. Some of the questions are tricky. You don't need to memorize the book but you need to understand what causes responses and why. Throughout the quarter you will need to know the levels of hormones throughout the life cycle of animals. This is one class you cannot skip, sleep through or take bad notes on. Despite Campos' difficulty with pronunciation, you need to take excellent notes in his class. There will be some questions on the tests that are only from his lecture. On tests, be aware of his wording. On plurality vs singularity, specific breed of animals. Take the labs with Plummer if you want a good lab grade and to get out early. Take the lab with Campos (if offered) if you want the most relevant information for his dumb tests. Last but not least, do not get comfortable with his tests. The quizzes may seem easy. The first test is easy, second extremely hard, third hard and final exam is medium in difficulty. You will need to draw a diagram of hormone levels at each stage of a cycling female species. While not passing this class has ruined my chances of graduating this quarter and giving this school more of my money and wasting it on overpriced rent, its a big lesson learned; put in the work up till the very end of the quarter. Don't slack because it can hurt you really bad on the last final.

We began in week one at chapter 2 and in week ten ended at chapter 15. That was page 14-333. So, I highly recommend staying up on the reading and making weekly study guides. Review them every few weeks! He is from Columbia so some students complain about his accent. Another thing I highly recommend is asking him if you can record his lectures (PLEASE don't be stupid-> share them on quizlet-> ruin it for the rest of us who rely on the recordings), this allows you to listen to a difficult concept multiple times at your own pace. Go through your notes after class and develop a CONSISTENT highlighting system. I learned so much about reproductive physiology, loved the straightforward, well written textbook and found this class to be fun, challenging and very rewarding. I feel privileged to have taken this class with Campos as he works very hard to make the lectures interesting, engaging and even humorous. Enjoy it!

Let me start off to say that Campos does a good job of teaching pre-vet students to be successful in vet school with this subject. However 75% of his class when polled at the beginning of the quarter was not pre-vet and they were just students that were just taking this class so they can graduate with an ASCI degree. You are tested literally every week whether it is a quiz, test or both. Ya I said both. A good written test for him is a 65% average, 3/4 tests were literally a D and he considered this to be a good level of question difficulty on a test. At least my OChem teacher had a 70% average on his tests. Anyways. Testing wise, all quizzes were taken on a phone app that you have to pay for that is made by the iClicker people and tests this quarter were done all on your lab tops. Except the final, we went into a library computer lab. The book is really helpful though at explaining some of the concepts! The quizzes weren't so bad though and lab helped your grade a lot if you did well on all the papers. Don't take any other hard courses the same time as this class because your GPA WILL tank and you may have to retake the class or one of your other classes. You have to stay on top of you stuff or you will for sure fail this course. I worked my butt off all quarter and walked into the final with a 75% and didn't do so hot, overall grade became a 69.8% and he gave me a D+ so don't expect him to pity you and round your grade. Especially pre-vet students because he will say that you can get into vet school with a C. I would say to avoid him at all costs except he's the only one that teaches it. Campos knows a lot about repro, however this class is certainly the hardest in the ASCI major. If you want to pass make sure to do well in lab. Go into his office hours Every time! If he sees you are trying he will feel a little bad, however he still expects you to learn a lot and sometimes cant understand why a concept that he got a PHD in is confusing to you. If possible try to take this class with a light load.

Campos is very knowledgeable on the subject. His test are extremely unreasonable and often cover questions never addressed in the textbook or in lecture. He takes the slides directly from a different professor so sometimes he isn't quite sure what the information is saying on the slide. Be prepared to give up your life for repro. This all being said I did find the information fascinating and learned a lot. This class is just very stressful and could be made much more effective

One of the most knowledge teachers I've ever had about the subject he is teaching, but by far the worst teacher as far as convening material I've ever had. Lectures are too fast and very confusing to understand; the tests are all on the computer and the wording of the questions and answer selection choices make them extremely difficult to understand and pass, and you have to by a subscription for iclicker to take the online in class quizzes and buying one more thing when your a broke college kid just sucks. Campos was not thrilled about working with the DRC and my learning accommodations through the DRC but eventually partially complied with some of them and a ridiculous amount of emails and meetings. I was really disappointed with the whole experience of this class since repro phys is one of my greatest interest and a subject I plan on finding a career related to. Labs with Plumber can be fun when there is an activity to do but the weekly research papers are a little much (and time consuming). If you want to pass this class plan on devoting most of your life to it, using every resource you can possible find and going to every office hour even if you have to ask questions you already know the answer to. Campos knows so much about animal repro it would really be an awesome class if he could teach efficiently and effectively.

Dr. Campos gets a lot of bad reviews, but I'm telling you, it's crap. People swear this is the hardest class they've ever taken. THIS CLASS IS NOT THAT HARD. You will absolutely be required to keep up with the reading and studying, but if you do, it is completely manageable. The tests are challenging and do have "tricks" in them, but the point is if you understand the concepts, you should be able to recognize them. I actually loved this class and am very interested in a career in repro now. If you go into the quarter expecting Campos to be awful, the class to suck, to get a bad grade, then you will. Go in with an open mind, and please just put in the effort, we are in college after all.

So, let me start off by saying that even if I had gotten an A in this class, my review would be the same. I have been waiting to write this review from very early on in the quarter. Dr. Campos seems like a nice guy. By all accounts I've heard he's great to work with outside of class (i.e. enterprises). Unfortunately, he is a HORRIBLE lecture teacher. His entire grading system is subjective. Let me explain how. He has you do 2 45 minute presentations, plus 15 minutes of "questions". The 15 minutes of questions is actually 15 minutes to rip on you for a presentation you've worked very hard on. This happened to everyone in the class. The 45 minute presentations are graded very subjectively, which is understandable, it's a presentation. But then there is participation. He never talks about it or explains it in class, so you assume it's probably like attendance or something. Until you see a random 30 or 50 in your grades. Took me a long time to figure out where the scores were coming from. I asked him multiple times and he'd say just talk in class. So, I'd ask questions and engage in discussions, but the grades stayed the same. By a freak mistake, I found out that he grades solely on discussing the random journal articles at the END of class. Do that, and you will get 100s every time, even if you don't show up for the other part of class. Additionally, his quiz scores are all over the place. My friend and I would put down the same answer and I'd get 2.8 out of 3 and she'd get 2 out of 3. For the same answer. Also, the quizzes involve a TON of studying. Each week you are responsible for knowing 2 (150+ slide) lectures, the 2 student presentations you listened too, the 2 student presentations you didn't even hear, and a scientific journal article. That's every week. So forget about actually understanding the material, you are just cramming and regurgitating. Finally, the final is an essay format test (subjective once again). Generally the questions are very broad and you have to REALLY study. Also, if you get a 79.99 in the class, that is a C. He will tell you that himself. Outside of the crazy requirements of time in this class, Campos' attitude is horrible. He laughs at students struggling and he is extremely condescending. If you try and answer a question, he often will not even listen and will just mock you. I have taken MANY upper level courses (including professors such as Burd and Peterson) and have not had any trouble. But this guy is on a power trip and should not be a lecture professor. Sorry for the lengthy review, but this quarter was hell purely because of this professor and his class. So, I want everyone to have more warning than I did. I thought this class would be valuable and fulfill a tech requirement. Unfortunately, I am left wishing I took the sausage class instead. I honestly probably would have gained the same amount without the hit to my GPA and the amount of stress I had to endure for a teacher that really doesn't care whether his students succeed or learn.

The best class of my life!

I have never enjoyed a class as much as I enjoyed 406. Dr. Campos is my favorite educator ever. It's a 5-unit, 400-level class, don't expect it to be easy or light work. The first commentator mentioned the presentations and the quizzes. Yes, the presentations are research-intensive and long, but not unfair and he will answer his own questions if they are too difficult (or you didn't do enough research on your topic). The "quizzes" are NOT in fact quizzes, they are full-on, short midterms, treat them as such. You don't have to memorize the presentations slide by slide, but you do have to study a lot and understand the big picture. Trust me, he will mention the important stuff again and again. He is very open to questions in class and will ask if everyone understands the material when the class gives him a puzzled look. I was very intimidated by Dr. Campos because the man has like, four degrees and REALLY knows his stuff, but he is great in office hours IF he can see that you are trying and came prepared with questions. He seems super busy so I'm sure he wouldn't take kindly to lazy people. This class has challenged me the most in all my time at Poly. After a couple meltdowns because of this class + 14 other units, I learned how to manage my time better and how to survive. I highly recommend this course if you want to challenge yourself, learn about very interesting material and apply the material you've learned throughout your Poly career! Good luck!

Dr. Campos is a great professor. The lab was much more manageable than the 406 lecture but was not by any means an "easy A". You'll choose a lab partner (choose wisely; who you pair up with will determine your experience in the lab and ultimately your grade) and work on a project throughout the quarter. You'll gain invaluable knowledge about the embryology field and it'll be a great opportunity to ask questions to someone very knowledgeable about the field.

What the guy/gal below said. Amen. I too took this class and have long since graduated from Poly, but I was cruising Poly Ratings for a kick and thought that I should pipe in and let you know how much of a joke this prof is.
