Anderson is so cool! He is extremely enthusiastic and nice. Not only that, but his methodology of teaching German is excellent. Always excited and in a good mood, Graf von Anderson's German courses are for sure a great choice. Der Graf ist der Hammer!

Graf von Anderson is a wonderful professor. He makes learning a new language very fun and easy. German is a difficult language, but he presents the material in a clear fashion. His humor is great, and his tests are straight forward and to the point. I would definitely recommend him as a professor.

Graf von anderson is the man. Helping me to learn Deutsche, something ive wanted to do for years. Trying to teach myself online didn't compare to his awesome lectures and activities. Couple tests and quizzes and HW every day that doesnt consume your life at all but helps you learn. He is hilarious too.A

Der Graf!! Best teacher here at Cal Poly, he is awesome. He focuses on grammar so it isn't a bunch of mindless vocabulary quizzes. The grade is dependent on four quizzes, participation, a midterm, and final. If you pay attention and do your homework you should do very well!

Honestly, nothing to add to that the masses of other students didn't already put down. Thought I'd put some fuel on the fire regardless. Excellent language and culture professor who takes the time to know his flock of students. A bit uncertain about the requirement to purchase Rosetta Stone, but he used that as an independent supplement - All of the essentials, ie. grammar, pronunciation were taught by him, and well. Hoping to learn German and perhaps bash on the French students a bit? Take this class!

I highly recommend you take Edler Graf's German classes. He is not only an engaging Professor but has such an enthusiasm for the material it is infectious. As a History major we are required to take a language, and I wouldn't take anything but German. Edler Graf adds into the course German culture, songs, and movies. This included included watching Star Wars in German to singing German Christmas carols. He is a vast encyclopedia of knowledge having lived in Germany for extended periods of time. TAKE THIS CLASS! that's all I can say, he is highly influential not only as a professor but as a person as well. What other professor has you call them a noble count? this dude rocks!

I do not want to sound repetitive...but, best Professor ever!! He is crazy funny, and teaches German extremely well. The 101 class does not have that interesting of content because you learn how to conjugate and stuff, but he still made me eager to go to class. He is the kind of prof you want to be best friends with.

After three quarters of German with Graf, I think I might understand German grammar better than I understand English grammar (and I'm an English major). The way he teaches the language is completely logical and perfectly paced, aka nothing like what your high school spanish experience probably was. You'll walk away having learned a lot while having the most fun you might ever have in a college class. This class is what you make of it; you can either skate through an easy, light work-load quarter and then cram for the final, or you can put in work throughout the year (as is necessary anyway to actually get a good grasp on speaking and understanding a language), and the quizzes and final will be a breeze. Highly recommend Graf, whether for learning German better than you think possible, or purely for the "psychedelic experience" that is his class.

Sometimes I wonder if Graf von Anderson writes some of these enthusiastic PolyRatings himself. I have to admit, Graf von Anderson really is kind, really is caring toward his students, but I felt as though I didn't learn any material in his class. He constantly raves about how well his class structure is as compared to high school language learning structure, but I have to admit that his structure does not work. His structure is as follows: learn grammar first, then learn vocabulary on your own. We learn HOW to do the past tense, HOW to do the future tense, and HOW to structure a sentence. However, he gives us ABSOLUTELY no vocabulary to supplement this learning, and allow us to actually form sentences. He does not give us a single vocabulary list, almost no worksheets, and teaches none of the basic conversations you go over dozens of times in high school language class (ie: Hello, my name is _____ , what is your name? / My name is ______ / good to meet you/ likewise. How are you doing? .... ). Even though these basics can be frustrating by their elementary level, I believe that learning these basics are ESSENTIAL for understanding the language. By the end of the 101 class, I had expected to understand at least one basic conversation. Instead, I learned german grammar that rendered itself useless because I have no other vocabulary to apply it to. Even though I do dislike the structure of the class, I cannot deny the charisma and care that Graf has for his students. He's a great person, but not the best professor.

If you want to learn german in the class, he basically expects you to just study the book while in class you don't get any instruction or your questions answered. His 'lectures' give you more questions than you started with. He's nice, but man I seriously didn't take away anything from this class.

Graf von Anderson is not a good professor. Good at Entertaining? Yes. At Engaging? Yes. But instructing? No. This class basically boils down to "Do you have the discipline and free time to do the homework he assigns? Do you learn best through reading? Do you know how to teach yourself?" If you answered no to either question, he isn't the professor for you. The class lacks structure. He teaches no vocabulary and barely touches on proper grammatical instruction. He teaches through examples. Not concepts. I do think he has written most of these positive reviews himself. I do not suggest taking this class for a grade. I do suggest sitting in on this class or taking it credit/no credit. Because while it causes more stress than it is worth, he is an absolutely entertaining professor. You will not know your grade in your class until he submits it at the end of the quarter.

Graf is god and Graf is good. Extremely approachable and helpful teacher if you actually talk to him. The bad reviews are most likely those who showed up to class and expected to learn without doing any of the homework.

I truly believe that this man is the best professor on campus. Graf knows how to make learning fun. I never want to miss a day of class because every day is enjoyable; I've never gone to this class and not 1) learned something new, and 2) had a genuine laugh. He taught himself German and you can clearly tell he is invested in making sure his students also learn this beautiful language. He is compassionate and helpful during office hours, responds quickly to e-mails, and interacts with students in class, making sure they understand the important things. Your grade in the class basically consists of quizzes and participation; he assigns homework for us to practice what we are learning in class, but does not collect it. As long as you come to class, read his book (he wrote it himself--it's outstanding), and do the practice problems, you will learn... the few people who left bad reviews probably didn't do the homework. He also shows films and teaches us German songs! To me, it is a culture class as much as it is a language class.

Graf Von Anderson is fantastic. I would highly recommend. His teaching style is mostly example based and grammatical, but he wrote the textbook for the class and it is a fantastic resource for learning grammar. Like really good. We also used a coursebook meant for immigrants to Germany to learn the language. That is where a lot of the vocabulary, conversational phrases, and other essential elements come in.

Graf is so cool. He is the funniest professor I've ever had and never gave a boring lecture. He is also a good teacher. To teach a language, you have to be a good teacher, not just speak two languages. He does that well. He thinks a lot about the best way to learn a language and you barely even realize you're learning because it's so fun. If you ever have a chance to take a language, I recommend it. It is impossible to get anything less than a B. Expect to put in 45 minutes a night for four nights a week. I hope he comes back next year.

Where do I begin...Graf (count) Anderson is the coolest professor at Cal Poly. He teaches German in a very simple way that any poor foreign language student can grasp. He has extremely helpful handouts that he distributes every day that you should DO and REVIEW if you really wanna learn German. As for grading, a huge part of the class is based on participation. So show up, don't f around, and participate in class because he loves when students do that. He gave one midterm that he deemed 'too hard' so he curved it. The final was a review of a German film based on the Nazi party. Excellent class. Excellent professor. Take it if you can.

Graf von Anderson is probably one of the best professors at Cal Poly. He teaches the material clearly and effectively, and he makes his class fun with movies and jokes. Although I probably didn't need to go to class everyday to pass, I WANTED to. Going to GER 102 was my last class of the day, and it was the highlight of my day. I would not have missed Der Graf's class for the world.

Der Graf is literally the BEST professor at Cal Poly! I can't say enough good things about his classes. He actually cares about his students and doesn't give you dumb busy work or stupid assignments like some language teachers do. He genuinely wants you to learn German and will offer tons of help and many chances to do well and learn. I recommend his classes to EVERYONE even if you aren't interested in learning German long-term. His 350 class (taught in English) is a great GE that every student should try to get into! SERIOUSLY COOLEST GUY EVER!

Professor Anderson is honestly the best professor I've had here at Cal Poly. He genuinely knows what he's doing, and though he doesn't always agree with Cal Poly administration (honestly, who does), he knows how to teach German and make you laugh. Homework isn't too bad, and the tests are super easy. He basically gives you a practice test that is identical to the actual test. You have to try really really hard to fail in this class. Take anderson, he's amazing

Graf is honestly my favorite professor. I've had him for 3 quarters straight. His class is challenging, yet so rewarding. He is an amazing person, teacher, human being. He is incredibly insightful and helpful and understanding of his students. You get what you put into this class, but he makes you want to put A LOT of time and energy into it because he's THAT good at teaching. He is hilarious, intelligent, engaging, compassionate, and versatile. Hands down my favorite person. Der Graf ist am besten. Der Gras ist der Hammer!

Graf has been by far my favorite professor/teacher of all time. There aren't enough kind words! I recommend this class to everyone, whether they have a language requirement or not, just because he makes it so enjoyable, worthwhile, and easy to learn German. Plus, he's super helpful and willing to take as much time as you need to answer questions in his office hours. Favorite professor, favorite class.

Anderson is very likely the most fun, most enthusiastic, and most interesting professor at Cal Poly. He understands his students very well, and he teaches accordingly. He has some fun jokes that keep people interested, and his lectures are always well balanced and fun. Here is a step by step process to deciding if one should take Dr. Anderson's classes. Step 1: Stop reading this review and sign up for the class in question. Step 2: Enjoy life.

Dr. Anderson was probably the most down to earth professor that I have had at Cal Poly. He takes the time to get to know his students and makes the classroom feel like a community. The grade for the class was made up of a midterm, final, class discussion, and online posts. There was a good deal of reading but Dr. Anderson always focused on the main points and did not pick at details. The discussion in class was great. If you are looking for a good professor, look no further than Professor Anderson.

I am so happy that I was able to take a class with Graf before I graduated. This guy is awesome, and can make any subject entertaining. He does make the class fairly easy, so you could definitely skate by without doing much work. But, you really get out of the class what you put in to it, and if you take the time to go to lecture and really participate, you will be shocked at how much you learn.

If you want to learn a language, especially German, I highly recommend Dr. Anderson (AKA Graf von Anderson). The passion for life and the subject is out of this world. Graf does everything he can to make sure EACH student is both comfortable in his class and on the right track to learning the language. He constantly is looking for a better way to teach his students, and even wrote his own book (which is unlike any other book... it is helpful AND entertaining all in one book). Graf is the best professor and person, ever. Take his class, and you will see why he has such a high polyrating.
