I was not looking forward to taking Eng 134 at all, as I thought it would just be writing essays. Stephen Cohen made this my favorite class of the quarter. He treated us as intellectuals and we learned a lot of interesting and applicable information. He assigned five essays, but we had peer review classes, and you could correct any essay as many times as you wanted. Also, we got to choose our own topics, which made writing the essays somewhat enjoyable. All of my friends hated their Eng 134 classes, and everyone I know who took Cohen loved the class. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great professor. Cohen is extrmeley nice and realizes that nobody is looking forward to their general education english class. He lectures on what he wants in his essays, and allows make-ups for every essay. He doesn't assign a lot of homework and overall presents a very do-able class. If you have a choice, take him for 134.

A great person and teacher. He made English at 8 am 4x per week enjoyable. That should tell you all you need to know. He's not that hard of a grader, and doesn't assign too much reading. I'll still see him around and say hi to him. I have yet to meet someone who didn't enjoy him as a professor. Take his class.

This was probably the best teacher I have had so far. Not only is he super friendly (he insists on knowing everybody's name in the first few weeks), but his classes and material are REALLY interesting. Can't say enough about this guy. He is a tough grader, but he wants you to be a better writer and shows you what you need to do. Not hard. I'd take him again if I could, he is just an awesome guy.

I loved Cohen! He is a really approachable professor who relates well to the students. Very laid back guy and that translates to his class. He says he is a tough grader and doesn't give many A's, but I got A's on every paper and assignments, i don't know if that's because of my abilities or his grading (probably a combo of both) but I got an A without that much trouble. You actually talk about interesting stuff in class and write on current topics which is nice. 3 longer papers and a group presentation but not a heavy course load at all besides some reading at home. Great guy, great class, TAKE HIM!

This class was great. A ton of work but it really helps you become a better writer. There are three papers and a group project but if you keep up on the work, and are a pretty good writer you can get an A. Cohen is awesome, funny guy and is there to help you when you need it. Not an easy A. Take this class if you want to be a better writer!

I have not been impressed with the Liberal Arts teachers at Cal Poly. They seem to have less qualifications and less passion than some of the other departments. I took Cohen for engl 145 because it was a required GE. His class it not "hard" per-se, but you have to outsmart the professor in order to find the "hidden requirements" for all of his essays and homework assignments. He doesn't do a very good job at clarifying instructions or giving detailed, written instructions beforehand. If you have to take him, make sure to ask lots of questions before the homework is due to make sure you did everything the way he wants it. He is not a hard essay grader, which is a plus. And he gives you lots of feedback afterwards. Overall, it wasn't the best or worst class I've taken.
