DeVos, Eric  

Devos just finished his first quarter. He's miles better than Dale Smith (who recently retired), and you should be thankful you got so lucky. Dr. Devos has a few issues that keep him from being a fantastic teacher, but give him time and he'll be one of the best in the ASCI department. His main problem is that he doesn't have time to spend on the class. He's got a full time job outside of Cal Poly running a practice, and doesn't really spend enough time writing the tests or reviewing the powerpoints. This makes him look lost and confused during lectures because he never knows what the next slide is, and his powerpoint flow is often an incoherent ramble. Some tests and quizzes had rushed questions that were confusing or too difficult. His other main issue is that he's such a nice guy, he marshmellows out every time someone has an issue. If you miss a question on a quiz and bitch about it to him, he'll concede you the points unless you're super wrong. He tries too hard to please his students, and it gets old fast. Expect multiple lectures wasted by students bitching Devos out for a point or two on a quiz question they missed entirely. Lots of point opportunities, some extra credit. Lab wasn't structured well but he tried hard to make it so. Dale Smith left a lot shit for him to clean up, and he did a good job. DeVos is a really nice guy, he knows the material well, and I'm sure he'll do better as he gets experience. This class is an easy A with even slight effort, and an easy B+ with no effort or skipping most classes.

Dr. DeVos is a nice guy, don't get me wrong, but he's not the greatest professor. He lectures straight from a powerpoint which he then posts online, so he doesn't add a lot of information that you can't find on your own. Also, when people ask questions its difficult to get a straight answer from him. I had already learned everything in this class in much greater detail in BIO 162, so luckily I didn't have to worry about making sense of his lecture. Take BIO 162 before ASCI 229 if you can because I think Dr. DeVos does not explain the concepts in enough depth or clarity to make it a quality learning experience. His test were mostly multiple choice with some free-response questions, so they were not hard. There is a lab practical at the end of the quarter which is fairly straightforward, however he does not allow you to check your answers before turning it in, so beware of that. Overall, it was an average class with an average teacher.

I absolutely loved this class. Not only was it extremely interesting but Dr. DeVos does a great job of presenting information. He always held my attention throughout the lecture and I enjoyed his quirky sense of humor. He made animal anatomy/physiology understandable (even funny!), and if you ever have any questions he is more than willing to spend some time answering them for you. The first midterm was way too easy, but he caught on to that and made the second one significantly harder. Lab was a mixture of fun and boring. It really all depended on what animal died on campus that day. One day we dissected a whole bull while another day we colored some diagrams. I am a pansy when it comes to blood so some of the dissections we did were difficult, but DeVos was very and worked with me to help me feel more comfortable. He won't let you just skip labs entirely, but he is understanding if you need to step away for a few minutes or watch from a distance. Do not underestimate the lab final! He gives you a bunch of anatomical terms, and I would definitely recommend knowing the general location of a good majority of them. Overall it was not a hard class, but you can't get away without studying! Oh, and please learn to appreciate his sense of humor. It makes class way more enjoyable.

DeVos is an awesome professor! For this class, it is A LOT of materials and you need to put yourself to study for this class as much as you can. The book is super easy to understand and very helpful to be prepared for the tests. I didn't have time to study so I got a C. So I cant argue with that. Overall, DeVos is very helpful professor. He is always caring and is willing to try his best to answer his student's question. For the lab, it's the only experience you can get at CalPoly by performing anatomy on decreased animals and DeVos is always helpful.
