Chen is a good teacher but she's annoying.

Hey i took chinese with this professor and i can tell ya if you already know chinese or is chinese then she will definitively decide to look the other cheek. Honestly she picks favorites and if you're wondering why your participation grade is so low it's because she doens't pick you when you raise your hand. avoid her at all cost she is an annoying bi*&h and she needs to get replaced by a more understanding and contempt prof

I\'m posting this for FORL 102 (which I assume means Foreign Language). The class was actually MLL 102, but MLL doesn\'t show as a prefix choice on Polyratings. This was a Chinese language intro class, and Dr. Chen did a first rate job. She was enthusiastic, easy to listen to, well-informed on her subject and helpful. I\'m glad we have a good instructor at Poly for such an important world language.

Her name is Huei-Yu Chen when you register but she goes by Sophia Chen, for anyone who is having difficulty finding this professor. She seems friendly at first, but is very bias towards certain students.

Professor Chen is an excellent professor. She keeps the class talking and it's fun. Learning Chinese is difficult, and if you don't put the time in, you won't learn. Students with a family background naturally do better and she understands this. If you start to struggle, she recognizes it and will work with you to overcome your obstacles, but you have to do the work. If you blow of the class or the work, she'll be disappointed you. She doesn't give easy A's, but you can easily get an A if you try and do well.

I went in this class not knowing what to expect, but I absolutely loved it. If you need electives and want to learn Chinese, I would recommend you take Professor Chen! She is entertaining in class and cares about her students. The one hour lectures go back really fast, and her class is pretty engaging. You converse with other students in the class so you get to know everyone pretty quickly. You really learn how to speak beginner Chinese, not just grammar and writing. The homework is mostly busy work: character exercises, listening activities, and a half-sheet conversation copy per lesson. The tests are reasonable, you just have to be learning in class and not cram last minute. Great teacher and totally doable class!

Well, Professor Chen really makes Chinese fun to learn. Almost all, if not all of our learning is not from doing exercises in the textbook or reading it in class, but rather interacting with your fellow classmates, much better than being stuck in a chair for 1 hour. She teaches extremely well and her English isn't bad. The only downside I would have to say is the homework can be quite tedious if you procrastinate (which everyone does anyways), tedious in the fact it will hurt your wrist writing away chinese characters of multiple strokes. The tests aren't so bad, and the Final Project is quite nice in that you don't have to study per say. I recommend this class to anyone.

Professor Chen is a great teacher. She presents the material really well and the tests are pretty easy, yet you still feel like you learned something coming out of it. My only complaint about the class was the ambiguity of when homework assignments were due,but otherwise I Highly recommend Professor Chen.

I waitlisted this class because it was a prerequisite and because I needed another 4 units to be a full time student and when I got to class she refused to give me a permission number even though there was more than enough space to add me. She said that it wasn't the class for me and that I was too advanced. I am fluent in chinese, but not because i learned it previously, but because I am chinese. I have to speak it to my parents. I explained to her, but she refused to add me in because she said knowing the language for more than 5 years is unfair to my peers. I asked her if she could let me in her intermediate class instead but she still refused to let me add her class.

Professor Chen is fun and quirky in class but she assigns a lot of homework and her tests are challenging. If you try to keep up with the work and study about 3 or 4 days in advance for her tests, you can do well. However, if you slack at all or try to study the night before, chances are you won't get an A. She is a pretty nice and fair professor and I think that no matter what learning a foreign language is difficult.

I think shes a great teacher! She's funny and tries to keep the class awake. There are a couple people that tend to fall asleep a little, but I think the language itself is interesting. If you do all of the work and study for the tests during the first quarter, there isn't a reason you shouldn't get an A. That being said, there is quite a bit of work, just as there would be with any other language. The teacher is from Taiwan, so it's not some American that doesn't know what they're talking about. Also, the final is really easy and I'm pretty sure I've got an A on this every time. My advise: take it for one quarter and see if you like it. Worst case scenario, you do the work and get an A or B to boost your GPA. Best case scenario, you end up liking it and continue taking it. By the way, this is my 3rd quarter taking it. The class is pretty consistent each quarter, but since it's a language, it builds on itself.
