Goldenburg was never very helpful as far as understanding the material presented. In fact he made the subject matter (which really wasn't that hard) harder than it should be. His exams were 10 questions (short answer essays) that were based on about 10 chapters and were practically impossible. I think that the average test score was about a 60%. He grades by looking at a graph of how the grades look along a line. Then he says," These look like about a B." It's ridiculous. Stay away from this professor.

This guy is a poor teacher. Fisrtsly, he goes through math at a pace that nobody can keep up with. Then secondly he does a bad job explaining concepts that are already difficult. And lastly whenever anyone asked for a clarification he would put chalk scribblings up on the board grunt at it and then ask smugly if everyone understood. He was also rude if you then persisted in asking questions. His lectures was a waste of time. I basically had to rely on the textbook to understand tough math. If you can avoid him do so!!

I absolutely hated this class the first week, but by the end of the quarter, it was my favorite. Dr. Goldengerg is knowledgeable in many areas, and he shared bits of info that were fun and interesting. He has a really good sense of humor, and wants everyone to succeed. He is patient, and expains things to the best of his ability. He moves fairly fast, but is always willing to answer tons of questions. His office hours are helpful. There is homework every night but we didn't turn it in, there were quizzes on it twice a week. He allows you to use your homework and sometimes take the questions straight from the book. I would recommend doing the 'problems plus' at the beginning of the quarter because it can't hurt, its not that hard, its an easy five points and they only get harder as the quarter goes along. I would recommend Goldenberg, his class is very enjoyable and you learn the material.

He's a little strange, and pretty dull, but he knows how to get you to understand the material. More importantly, he lets the class have a pretty good say in what goes on. If we needed another day for a subject, we got it. If we needed another day before the tests, we got it. You don't have to turn in homework, you just take a measly five point quiz every other day. You can have your homework with you, and it's often a question from right off the homework. So basically, if you know the material and can get the question right, you don't need to bother doing any of the work.

This is a tough one. On one hand, Goldenberg is a very nice, albeit somewhat odd guy. On the other hand, his lectures were often pretty difficult to follow for someone who hadn't taken Calculus before. On the plus side, there aren't very many lectures. Generally, a day in class consists of going over questions from homework the night before, which honestly isn't that bad an idea. He's always willing to answer questions, and tries to get you to talk to him. He gives two tests, a final, and two quizzes every week. The quizzes are the same problems on the homework, and you can use that assignment as notes. The tests are very difficult, and I found myself convinced I would fail the class miserably, but ended up with a C. The lesson? Beat class average and you'll be fine. Only recommended if you aren't afraid to ask questions, and have a good handle on math.

First off, this guy is not a bad guy. I liked him and his personality. Sorta quirky, but other than that a nice guy. But his teaching techniques are totally not my style. He baisically goes over questions off the homework, which is not collected but a 7 point pass/fail quiz straight off the hw twice a week, for the first 45 min of class and then spends the remaining 10-15min going over a section out of the book. I aced my calc class in high school but I still failed his class. The concepts were simple, but they took away my calculator. If you were taught on the calculator, I hope you can do math in your head well and now your basics. If you learn well by example after example, take him and hes not too bad. If not, stay away. Also he does curve quite a bit and tries to get you a good grade. Do the problems plus, I didnt...

Dr. Goldenberg is only slightly hailed on this site because he inflates his grades after everyone fails. He also gives way too much extra credit(which he is toning down the next quarter he teaches). I think I got about 15% extra credit. I took the equivilent to Calculus 141-143 last year at Cal State Fullerton and got C's, so I decided to just start over again. This year, without the extra credit, I actually would have gotten a lower grade. He did nothing but confuse me. Stay away from him if you have to move on to any higher Calculus classes.

I hate to bag on Stu. He really is a nice guy, but his class was close to torture. Some days an hour felt like 5. He takes his time with problems and is pretty monotone. I found myself nodding off half way through the lecture. He does answer any question you have on the homework although he'll only "set it up", which means you get the fun part of solving the rest...which is usually where you screw up. He has quizes every mon and wed which is one homework problem. He had 2 midterms and a final. Usually 10 problems each. I have to say the tests were ridiculous. Not difficult, just questionable if they were even considered math problems. He likes to use cyclist analogies a lot. I took calculus before in High School and that definately helped me through the course. If you're new to calc...I guess you are on your own. I would say, do the homework, use office hours to clear up any questions on the homework and study. Oh, and go to class...as tempting as it may seem to sleep in and not go, I found that only adds to the procrastination. So not that you'll learn anything in lecture, it'll just keep you focused. Stu is so so.

Goldenberg was a really nice guy. He had a dry, yet entertaining sense of humor and he was always smiling. But the class wasn't very helpful. I'd already taken AP calc. in high school, so it was frustrating when I knew he was skipping important information that we needed to know. If MATH 141 is required for your major, definitely don't take Goldenberg. But if you're taking it for fun (yeah right!), don't worry.

Like everyone else I hate sitting here and talking about how horrible a professor Dr. Goldenburg is because he's a pretty good guy. He'll entertain you when he's not lecturing, but as soon as the chalk comes out so does the pillow. Having never taken calculus before I was lost the majority of the time, learned to love reading my calc book, and was continuously frustrated by hearing, "you've never had it before! I have and I'm confused, you're screwed." Tread carefully when taking this one, if you're taking the class for the first time, run like hell! If you've had it before, well, you should probably run like hell too. Nice guy though.

If you have never taken Calc before, i do not recommend Goldenberg. He is very nice, and has a nerdy sense of humor, but makes himself available in his office and answers any of your questions. In class, do not be shy to ask questions because he goes. people say they are so confused, but in class they never ask any homework problems and wonder why they get bad grades. Again, if this is your first calc class ever, maybe take someone else. if this is a refresher course then he is fine.

Kinda hard to understand during lectures because he skips steps in problems. Very nice and will try to help you during office hours. If you do the homework which isn't required, you will ace every quiz and if you study a little youll get good test scores. Overall was an ok class, but maybe take another teacher if you didn't take calc in high school.

Well, I took MATH 141 in high school and passed the AP test but decided I wanted to take it again without a calculator freshmen year. Stuart has daily quizzes which were cake for me but a little difficult for some students that the material was new to. He did an OK job presenting the material but skipped some steps that confused some of the new guys, but believe me, the stuff he did doesn't even come close to the horrible teaching habits some PHYS and MATH teachers have that completely lose most of the class. He'll go back step-by-step if you ask him to. He's a really nice guy. He also has a really quirky sense of humor in that he puts these weird comics he draws in the corner of every quiz. I found it refreshing because I had 7:00AM English and 8:00AM Math and it kind of gave me a reason to stay awake. However, I'd imagine the people who had him as the first class in the morning just found the comics dumb and annoying because it was way too early for that kind of shit. I heard he retired from teaching and that's a huge bummer for me. I definitely liked him more than I've liked my last set of Calculus teachers.

Professor Goldenberg is nice man but is really not a good teacher to have. PROS: He'll help any student that has a question, weird/funny sense of humour, and seems like he enjoys teaching math. CONS: He gives you simple problems in class and on quizes, but when the test roll around he gives you the hardest, most impossible problems to slove. He moves very quickly through class in his lectures and most of the time half the class is completely lost. You really have to know the concepts well to pass the class. Also every time I got out of that class my head hurt, very stressful. I would not recomend this teacher for anyone unless they are very confindent in math and enjoy tough problems.

Stu is a great teacher who is always willing to take some extra time and explain any problem. Hes rediculously smart and sometimes gets into modes where he just flies through complex problems and everyone gets lost but he never hesitates to help anyone with questions. I had no calculus experience at all and started off horrible but i started attending several of his office hours and he has helped me a lot. His midterms seem impossible because he picks hard problems and the grades are fairly low but if you can think them through logically you will do well

Goldenberg was an awful teacher. I'm not just saying that because I failed, but because he is incapable of explaining things. If a student is confused, he will "explain" the problems in a way which makes sense in HIS mind. It only makes you more confused than you already were. Avoid.

The only reason I got an A in the class is because I was on the high end of the curve and the low end (2) of the ap calc ab test. I knew the material and it still was confusing. He skips multiple steps on everything and the whole course is a blurr. The tests don't even cover the material in the course, he'll throw in a problem that everyone will get wrong just for the hell of it. To make it even more dreadful he has his "aerodynamic helmet" comics on every in class quiz and they are terrible. Luckily you'll pass as long as everyone is more confused than you.

Stu does not explain the material at all. If you have already taken calculus, you might like him, because he doesnt collect homework, and doesnt care about attendance. If you have not taken calculus before AVOID AT ALL COST. His lectures make no sense..he reads straight from the book but doesnt even do that well. If you ask him to explain a problem on the board, he will solve it with a method unknown to the class. I did go to office hours a couple times, and he is more helpful there. He is a smart guy, but really shouldn't be teaching calc 1

Stuart seems like a nice guy but seriously cannot convey any of the concepts necessary for understanding Calculus to his students. He gives a quiz twice a week ( all of them have a comic, which he draws , containing an obscure, bike related, joke that only he understands because its based on a ride he took in the 1970s). If you fall behind you are definitely screwed. He teaches the class assuming you took Calc in high school and spends way too much time on things that are very unimportant. Try to get another calc teacher if you want to learn something. If you know calc already then it will be a breeze but if your math skills aren't up to speed you are fucked from the get go.

A Chinese man and his Jewish friend are walking along one day when the Jewish man suddenly slugs the Chinese man in the mouth. "What was that for?" the Chinese man asks. "That was for Pearl Harbor!" "Pearl Harbor? That was the Japanese. I'm Chinese." "Chinese, Japanese, what's the difference?" They continue walking in silence, then the Chinese man punches the Jew in the face. "What's that all about?" the Jew asks. "That was for the Titanic!" "The Titanic? That was an iceberg." "Iceberg, Goldberg, what's the difference?". Enough said..

Dr. Goldenberg is a confusing teacher. He seems to get a little irritated when you ask a lot of questons. There is homework due every friday, there is a grader that checks it for points. The bad part is that Goldenberg never looks at the homework, the grader determines your grade. It takes a lot of work to do well in his class. I wouldn't recommend him.

Wow, did the other reviewers have the same teacher that I did? I had Stu for 3 quarters in a row my Freshman year, and everyone that I know from my classes still loves him. His lectures were great, he was very willing to answer questions, and every two weeks he provided a "challenge" problem that was genuinely interesting and illustrated the harder points of the material. I was a bit uncertain about his willingness to help until the first time a group of us called him at home and had him help us with a problem for almost a half-hour. He is very personable, approachable, and helpful. I also found going to his office hours helped. One a side-note, did anyone else think that he looked a bit like Gargamel from the Smurfs?

i definitely do not recommend this teacher. He tries very hard to teach, but he seems to have absolutely no idea how to. Sometimes, I feel that going to his class made me more confused. When he explains a problem in class, he turns his back to the class and just does the problem, expecting the class to understand what he is really doing. When people want to ask questions, he does not notice and so they are lost for the rest of the problem. When he makes a mistake on the problem, he will fix it but will not explain how the mistake changes the solution. People do ask question but most people are so confused that they dont know what they really need help on. Worst of all are his pathetic jokes during inappropriate times.

Dr. Goldenberg treats this class as if you were a Graduate student in Mathematics. All the homework assignments are the extremely difficult problems(such as numbers 40 and above in your text). Forget the days when you could actually understand and do a math problem. He does not believe in assigning or teaching basic concepts- he goes straight to the complex. He says the tests will be on the homework- BEWARE- they never seemed to be and there were problems no one in his course was able to complete because of the difficulty level as well as the alarming notion you had no idea where the problem came from. There are two midterms- 100 points each. Homework, excruciating time consuming and impossible to do without a supplemental manual, was worth 100 points and graded by a grader who seemed to have never encountered mercy. The final consisted of 13 problems- most people knew how to do about 5 of the problems. One poor soul turned in his mostly blank final after 30 minutes because it all seemed ridiculous. There is neither a curve nor extra credit, but he will make your F's on midterms into D's which does stifle some tears. Dr. Goldenberg is an approachable professor- generally mild-mannered and allows you to make use of his office hours. However, in class, questions seem futile as most people are tragically consumed in a "I have no idea what he is talking about" mantra. If asked, he tries his best to answer your question, but it seemed clarification was beyond grasp. This is not to say Goldenberg is not intelligent- he definitely is and he understands the concepts thoroughly- BUT the problem lies in his making the class understand. His standards are high, which is fine, but it is when those standards are unattainable that students become a mass of discouraged ulcers. Goldenberg's class is only appropriate for those blessed as math geniuses and prodigies. I wish I could say otherwise, because Goldenburg is genuinely an amiable, approachable, and again intelligent person. BUT- For the rest of the human population, I would recommend a different teacher or a handy cache of pepto bismol and aspirin because it will be one of the most challenging and frustrating quarters.

I took him for 142 and 143, and I'm in his 241 class now. He's easily the best math professor on campus. He's difficult, but you learn the material better than you would with anyone else. If you ask a question, he knows right away what your problem is. He isn't afraid to do an insanely difficult problem on the board, and sometimes he'll assign one. Expect in-depth in lectures, difficult homework assignments, and a fast pace. Even failing his 142 class I learned more than when I got my A second time around with a different teacher. His tests relate to the lectures reasonably well, but a problem or two will surprise you from time to time. Don't take him if you want an easy A, but if you're going to be using math for the rest of your life, he's definitely your guy.

Stuie is a funny guy during class and office hours. His sense of humor makes the otherwise boring class seem a little less boring. He has 2 exams and a final. Also, he collects homework once a week, and it counts for like 20% of your grade, so you'd better do it (it helps for the tests). He grades fair and curves the tests. No bell curve, just a straight average. He can write a little fast sometimes, but if you ask him to slow down or explain something he would be more than happyto do so. He never makes fun of you if you ask him a question, which made me more likely to ask him about what I didn't know. I would say take him if you want to learn calc 142, but be prepared to work. the homework problems are slightly harder then the test problems, but do them anyway.

Goldenburg is a very good teacher. He presents information fairly clearly, but more importantly will answere your questions. He does tend to not spend enough time explaining the material, thus making it all the harder to do your homework. The homework load is too much, but it does help you learn, and he does collect it. The test are extremely difficult. He puts problems on the tests that have never been seen in class, and typically require a great deal of algebraic manipulation to resemble anything you've seen before. If your good at algebra, this is the teacher for you. If you did alright on the CALC AB test, don't take this section. If you did well on the Calc AB or BC test you might struggle, but you'll probebly end up with a B or high C.

I really enjoyed this class. He really wants to see all of his students understand the material, and he will take as much time as it needs to make sure of that. His lectures are a little on the boring side, and he tends to mumble a little. He has a quirky sense of humor, but I think he's pretty funny. He does assign a lot of homework, typically with a few problems requiring proofs. However, the homework grader only grades 3 of the easier problems, so it isn't difficult to get a good grade. The 2 midterms and the final are on the tougher side, but he always gives you the grade you deserve (not always good, but it's fair). You will definitely learn from Goldenberg.

Dr. Goldenberg is a very knowledgeable man in more subjects than just math. Specifically in math he likes to use "math magic" which is really confusing. Also, the whole 2 midterms and a final as your entire grade (homework counts for very little) is just a bit rough. Hope you have a class with not more than 1 or 2 overacheivers or else the curve is a lot higher. He is an okay prof, if you have to take him, it's okay...a B is do-able.

The thing that stands out most about goldenberg is how fair he is. The homework load is kinda a lot...homework due every friday, about 15 problems per section. He gives time in class everyday to go over any homework problems you didnt get. Each homework is out of 10 points...at the end of the quarter he takes your percentage of homework to be out of 100 points I think, but theres much more than 100 points altogether in homework. There are two midterms and a final. The problems on them arent from the homework, but if you did the homework and understand the material, you can do the problems just fine. He doesnt choose problems that are extremely hard on his tests. If you really mess up on the two midterms, but you get over the class average on the final, he'll give you a C. Teaching the material, he's not so good at. He does lots of examples in class, but other than that, you're on your own to figure it out.

Professor Goldenberg teaches math so you come to understand the concepts behind the formulas rather than just memorize and punch in numbers. You have two midterms, a final, and 5 point quizzes straight off the homework about twice a week and you can use your homework to help you with the quiz. He has a quirky sense of humor, but it helps make the content a little less dry. The most intimidating thing was the low class averages on the midterms, but most were happily surprised by their grade in the end.

I think Prof. Goldenberg is great. I liked him so much that I planned my entire winter class schedule around his 143 class. He is kind of dorky, but it is pretty entertaining. He is always willing to help if you have questions, even when it isn't his office hours. His grading techniques are pretty fair... The tests aren't usually very out of nowhere. Nothing really hard on the tests, but you won't expect there to be really easy questions either. The class usually averages somewhere between 60 - 70% and he grades on a curve. He also works pretty slow, and he wont go on until the class understands the concept. Chances are if you take Goldenberg and pay attention you will do fine.

Goldenberg was an average teacher. His tests are very conceptual so you really have to know the material. He also gves fairly easy quizes twice a week so do the homework. You are not required to do the hw though but trust me its the only way to nail the quizes. Honestly, his class is really hard, but your grade totally depends on what work you put in to it. He gives homework, but it is not required. He also has quizzes twice a week, one question. The questions he chooses though are really difficult. Maily, the quizzes weed out the people who don't open thier book. His grades are also curved, so even if your doing poorly, there is no way to know your grade. I kept track of my points, and I was about 50%, but I still got an A. I would reccomend him for the people who are self-motivated and test-taking types. There is nothing but tests, so no depending on homework for credit.

I was in Goldenberg's invitation 143 class for those who got 5s on the BC exam. If you're in the same class, its basically its all stuff you've done in calc BC, except instead of doing problems 1 thru 20 odd, youre given 40 thru 60 even. The homework is a good amount. Enough to let you understand the chapter if you do it right. The one great thing about his class is that youre given the homework sheet at the start, and he only takes homework in at the end of the week, which allows you to do it whenever you have time to. (Very good if youre in CSC 109). If youre good at math, take his class - you might learn something. Btw, the theory behind the class is that you do a goodly amount of homework, and then the entire class is spent going over the homework, and talking briefly about the next chapter, which you read yourself. The curve is INCREDIBLE, thanks to the 9am class. But if you werent blessed with a godlike inherent ability at math... If you don't know how you possibly even passed the BC exam, let alone got a 5, and didnt understand the material, then youre in for a 'war hell ride' - to quote Wesley Willis. Because Prof. Goldenberg cant teach. He does problems without looking at the manual, which leads to a scribbled mess on the board - he then steps back, mumbles, and makes the hyperbola into a fish, leaving 26 blank faces and chattering in the right corner of the room. He uses techniques such as the MAGIC ONE, and reviews integration by parts by analogizing u's and dv's to Romulans and Klingons. Have fun. I reread what I wrote, and I think I really am very accurate. You can equate this evaluation with truth.

Goldenberg is a terrible math teacher. I was a math major and loved calculus and tooks his class and he made me hate it. When you ask for help he doesn't explain well at all, I honestly don't think he knows how to. His lectures also don't help at ALL in doing the homework. at first impression, it seems that dr. goldenberg cannot teach at all; however, it is not likely so. He bases his class on problem solving techniques more than conceptual understanding skills. Goldenbergs lectures were confusing, very fast, and frequently went off topic, but his problem solving techniques are brilliant. Tests were hard to do and graded pretty fairly. He curves his tests to the class. For those of you who need to get a firm grasp on the concepts, i wouldnt recomend taking him; however, if you are up for some thinking challenges then hes your man.

So here's the deal, Dr. Golden burg is pretty confusing in class, not because he doesn't what he's doing he just expects you to grasp the information immeadiately and follow along...which usually doesn't happen, so you the leave the class with the feeling of "what the hell just happened in there." BUT if you go to his office hours he completely explains everything in a way that makes everything make sense so if you're getting it in class definitely go see him because he'll completely help you. His tests are bitch hard and this is relected in everyones grade, so he gives a really fat curve...unfortunately he does do it until the very end so you'll only where you stand in comparison to the rest of the class (I know I'm above the average right now, I just don't know by how much). He also gives those bitchy conceptual problems for homework. On the plus side, he'll answer every single question you have, so throw them out there it'll help. I'd say he's pretty good overall, if nothing else he's nice guy when you talk to him.

Stuart Goldenberg is a very bright and intelligent man, he tells somewhat funny jokes and he can also write on the chalkboard really really fast; this is the extent of his teaching ability. From the first day of class I was always lost in his lectures. Maybe because his short choppy sentences mimicked that of the fat guy with glasses in the movie "Office Space", or maybe it was because he expected us to grasp concepts of Calculus with little help and guidance (Imagine a parent teaching a child to walk, just by staring and repeating "walk!!" without guiding or showing a different step-by-step view or approach). The only reason I got a B was because I studied the notes of a friend in another class for our finals. If you are so unlucky to be stuck with Goldenberg, I am really sorry for you. Do anything and everything to NOT get Goldenberg. He teaches the honors classes too, so he thinks that the regular students in the regular classes can understand the material just as fast. He doesn't explain the material to you very clearly. He spends most of the class time going over the previous night's homework because he didn't spend enough time lecturing about the topic the night before. He does curve his exams, but they're usually over problems we've never done before. I just got a C for the class because I got a C on the final so he basically gives you what you get on the final if you do better than the grade you had going into the final.

At times in class I may have fallen a step or two behind in his lecture, but I always seemed to learn the material well by the time each midterm came around. All it required was desire to learn. If you are willing to spend TIME with the material and actually TRY like college students should do you will do fine. He grades very fairly and is actually a entertaining profesor. If you are somewhat inteligent and arn't a hudge slacker then take him. This is one of those classes that you might get suprised when grades come out on MUSTANG INFO....because that C you thought you got actually tured out to be a B.

This guy is possibly one of the worst professors that I have ever taken here at Cal Poly. This guy does not know how to teach math. He gives out a ridiculous amount of homework, his tests are unreasonable, but i'll say one good thing about him: he curves. He relates math problems to absurd examples that are more than likely to just confuse the student even more. He is one of the core reasons why I dropped out of the college of engineering for the college of business. Take this guy only if you want to hate math for the rest of your life.

I liked Goldenberg a lot- He really makes an effort to help you, explained things in a way I could understand, and is a really nice guy overall. I have to admit, I did work really hard all quarter, did all the hw, went to office hours, etc. Goldenberg doesn't make you feel stupid for asking questions, in fact, he made an effort to make me feel smarter for that. He never gets impatient, even if he explains something 4 different ways and you still don't understand. Great professor overall, i really wish i could take him for 241.

Goldenberg is a really nice guy, and he'll try his hardest to help you with stuff, he's just not a good teacher. The only reason I passed this class was because I took S.I. with it. He has two quizes a week that come directly from the homework, so they're not hard. The two tests are difficult, but he grades on a huge curve. The class average for one of our midterms was 44%. Some kids only came to class on the quiz days. The thing is, if you take SI or you're good at teaching yourself from the book, he's not a bad guy to take.

Goldenberg is an odd guy. I FAILED both of his 2 midterms, so i thought i was doomed... but he curved HUGE. BIG TIP: DON'T BE DISCOURAGED EVEN IF YOU GET BELOW AVERAGE ON BOTH MIDTERMS, you still have a big chance to pass... like i did. i didn't realize it, but i could've earned a C or B easy, if i really tried. The big problem was that he DID NOT TEACH. he knew the material SO MUCH that he always assumed you knew that much too, and went really fast. SO STOP HIM AND ASK QUESTIONS... that was my problem, when i got lost, i just left confused. HE WILL HELP YOU, but it takes effort. I wish i hadn't had given up or i could've passed.. now i have Van Lingen again for Calc 143, which is way harder. Although he cannot teach, he will help you if you are doomed.

Stu is a nice guy but he fuckin sucks as a math teacher. He just stands in the front of the class and kind of mumbles and skips through the material quickly. I didn't learn one damn thing from him. The only reason I past his class was because I taught myself the material by reading the book (which was harder than shit). His homework quizzes are easy if you do the homework and his tests are really hard. Don't take his classes unless you're some kind of fuckin genious that can learn from the book.

Stuart is a nice guy first of all. But he reinvents the term sucking. I spent the entire quarter wondering how much more time was left in the class, and now that it is over, i am throughly happy. I would never take a class from him again. He can't teach. When explaining problems on the board, he skips steps and is very hard to follow. When questioned, he just says that "what do you mean you don't know how to do this?" He assumes that we understand everything he is explaining, and just lightly goes over the subjects. He has 2 quizes everyweek but does not collect homework.

Well...what can I say about Mr. Stewie? He gets a lot of crap ratings on here which are accurate. Nevertheless, I thought he was SOMEWHAT adequate. There were two midterms, a bunch of little pissy quizes ,which actually help out a lot, and a final. I got a D on the first midterm and a C on the second and probably about 80 percent or so of the pissy quiz grades. SO there is defintely some curving goin on here. Bottom line is if your a person who can pick calc concepts up quickly and dont mind visiting an office hour or two, he's not a bad teacher. If you come out of the first day of class thinking he's goin to teach you in lecture, your highly mistaken. Oh, and if there is a workshop offered along with stewie's class, take it!!

Dr. Goldenberg is a very nice guy, but a horrible teacher, everyone relies on the curve and extra credit to do well in the class. I ended up having to teach myself a lot of the material, or get help from other professors. Classes are super confusing and tests aren't always reflective of what was done in class. . . ask lots of questions to make him clarify things that he skips over.

Interesting guy, and he definitely knows the material, but he doesn't explain it very well. Often, I would be doing the homework, and had to look up a concept that he didn't mention in class but was stil required for the homework. As a person, he's fine, but I would have preferred better explanation of the material.

Avoid him at all costs if you need to take more calculus beyond his course. If his class is the only math you need to know then he might be ok... just because he'll confused the hell out of you, you fail the class, then he curves you to a C or B so he doesn't look so bad. Honestly I had 1 test where the class average was under 50%, that is just wrong, it means a hard test, yes, but more importantly it mean that he cannot teach. Going to his class only confused me and in the end I found I did better in the class if I stopped going and learned the material from friends who had better teachers. Overall he is a horrible teacher but might be ok if this is the only math class you'll need here, otherwise you will not learn much, come out of the class confused about math and struggle in you next level class.

Mr.Goldenberg taught the most stressful math class I have ever taken. His lectures were short and he never really explained what we were doing or how to do it. He would often just start writing on the board and often skip steps that are critical to comprehension. I could never figure out the homework, so since he didn't collect it, I stopped doing it. I have never been lost in a math class. I got a 5 on the ab calc test and an A in 142. I barley understood the material, so I got Cs on the midterms, and those grades were of the highest in the class!! He curves it at the end so that those with the highest grades get As, but there is no reason why a calc three midterm can't have a decent uncurved average. The final was so tricky that he practically told students how to do the problem if they asked a question. I would spend a lot of time teaching the material to myself, and when it finally clicked I could think of tons of better ways to teach it then he does. He is a very sweet man, but I would never take a class from him again.

If this is your first time taking calculus, I highly recommend picking another teacher. This teacher will write equations on the board without ever explaining what they are, and what they actually do, so it's anyone's guess when to use them. Once he has sufficiently taught one subject, rather than moving on, he will just make that one topic difficult by creating impossible problems and tests on it, rather than just making sure the class understands it, and move on. Expect to be finding the limit as h goes to zero until the very last day of this class, even though that is something that should be abandoned after the power rule is taught. Also, make sure you have factoring mastered, because when he does it on the board, he skips multiple steps, which about 1/3 of the time result in him making a mistake, getting to the end of problem, arriving at the wrong answer, and saying "well you get the idea."

I took Goldenberg for Modern Physics, and it was very obvious that he was a math teacher. He spent most of the classes doing long, involved, incredibly complicated proofs of wildly difficult equations, which didn't make learning the course material any easier (because phys 211 is a hard class.) He would answer any and all questions you give to him, and he usually can give a very simple, consise, very good answer. The only problem is, after he is done explaining the problem, you're left scratching your head wondering why you didn't figure that out on your own. The answer is usually because you didn't quite catch it in lecture. My recommendation is this. He is not a 'kill-you-with-hard-stuff teacher, so don't panic if you have to take him. Just be prepared to study lots and lots, give the homework questions at *least* a good look-over and try your best to follow the lectures, it isn't easy.

I had Dr. Goldenberg for 241 last spring and am currently enrolled in 242 this fall quarter. I strongly suggest him for students whose major requires a lot of math. He is one of the most genuine teachers around at Poly. Whether it's in class or office hours, he'll answer any and all questions ANY student has. His tests are tougher than the average math test, but then again, a math test isn't supposed to be easy. If you give it your all and he sees that, you won't get an F in his class. TAKE Dr. Goldenberg, you'll be glad in the long run.

This guy goes fast, and expects a lot out of his students. MATH NERDS, THIS GUY IS YOU IN 20 YEARS! Any other teacher and I would have had an A, but this guy challenged the hell out of me and what can I say, I didn't study enough. Interesting guy, very hard tests, not much else to say.

Goldenberg is a smart guy, and you have to be really smart to get a good grade. He jets along in lecture, expecting you to grasp total knowledge of a subject by an 2-minute explanation and a simple example. His tests are unfair, sometimes asking 142/143 questions. He is also very unpleasant (to me at least) and sometimes condescending in office hours. Our class was 2/3 freshmen who scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam, and I was from the other 1/3, so this could be the reason for my disdain. Bottom line, if you're an honor student, you'll like him and he'll like you. If you're not an honor student, you'll hate him and he'll hate you.

I absolutly loved Dr. Goldenburg! I was in the honors section for 143 and 241. I unfourtunetlly could not take 242 with him seing as how it was at 9am and I'm so not the morning person. He is a wonderful professor and I would take any class that he is teaching. He is a very challenging teacher (not hard but callenging). His desire is for you to learn the material and not worry about the grades. He has an wonderfully friendly personality and the classes were very enjoyable. I sat in the "noisy" right front corner with friends, and he could notice very quickly if we were not understanding the info. I once made a quiet "what?" in class and he stopped in the middle of the problem to make sure that I was still following what he was doing. The man is very helpful and genuinly cares about the students. Get to know him and utilise his advice and experience. I still go to him with random questions or complaints and I always find a helpful listening ear. My math skills are definitly stronger after having him (spelling still sucks). The test are very callenging, most of the time we wanted to cry after leaving a midterm, but we were always plesently suprised at our overall grades. He is a great professor who is fair and friendly.

If you are not a math major, do not take this guy's class. I got through calculus pretty well (it's definitely not my strong point), but this class made me hate math. The lecture's are impossible to follow. I quit taking notes because I just got more confused with his explanations, but the Differential Equations book we use is horrible, so I couldn't make anything out of it either. Also, his tests are worse than the lectures. Imagine a test with nothing but challenge problems. His tests weren't written to see how well you understood the principles, but to see how well you could figure out ridiculously difficult integrations, and get past his tricks. I got a good tutor, and I still couldn't get a C in his class. Anyway, he doesn't understand that we're all not math major caliber students, and he needs to take it down a couple notches so that people like me can get through this class without a bitter hatred of mathematics, and absolutely no comprehension of what I spent a quarter studying.

Dr. Goldenburg is great. Everything that he teaches is very straight forward. He does move a little fast through the material, but he does cover it all so that you know every section. Another good thing that he does is that he goes over any homework problems that you had problems with during class. I can think of days when all we did was homework problems. He did come across as intimidating in office hours, but each time he was always more than happy to help. If you want a straight forward proffesor who will do everything in his power to help you learn, then take this man.

I took Goldenberg for Math 143, 241, and 242. I took the honors version of the class, but don't be fooled, I'm still a bit of a slacker. Dr. Goldenberg is still one of my favorite professors at Poly. The guy is extremely fair on grading and will probably give you a higher grade than you expect. He collects grades homework, but I have my doubts that it affects your grade for the quarter. I missed probably 30% of my homework and had C average grades on the tests, but still managed a B in the class each of the three quarters I took it. If you want to learn math, this is definitely a good professor. He will always spend extra time in class to explain anything students are having difficulty with. If you ask questions, he will work at a pace that follows yours; he is very adaptable. I found the tests to be somewhat challenging, but often surprised myself. He is definitely a fair guy that will give you some slack if you need it. As far as a personality goes, as far as math teachers go this guy is awesome. He's very very friendly and does all he can to keep his class from being silent. He involves his students and gets to know everyone personally. Nearly every day I went to class, he would ask various students about how their weekend was or what they did the night before. And he doesn't pick favorites either. Go to class, do your homework, study, ask questions... Dr. Goldenberg is awesome

He is not the worst professor ive had but he's not the best. He is funny and likes to keep students interested by telling really dumb jokes and drawing pictures. His lectures are somewhat clear, but only become clear after you read the section in teh book. His homework is my biggest complaint. He assigns 2 hrs a night, no joke. Its one thing to make a student do homework, that i dont mind, but its completly another thing to make them do Way too much homework. The line between busy work and constructive work is fine, but he steps wayyyy over it. All together, the grades come out a bit better than you might expect at the end of the quarter. If you put in your share of work, he's fair and will recognize that.

Goldenberg was a darn good lecturer. Though diffy Q is a very hard and boring subject, he made sure his students understood key concepts and was able to keep many of his students interested in the class by throwing in a couple of jokes every now and then. The homework load was absolutely crazy; about 15-20 problems a night. The test were fair and represented homework problems, mainly from the review sections. Just as long as you keep up with the homework, tests shouldn't be too bad. Overall, he is a great teacher. You should be surprised when you get your grade at the end of the quarter. But beware; he is not hesitant to fail you!

OH man, this guy is f*cking ridiculous!!! One of the worst teachers I've ever had, although not a bad person at heart! He teaches things differently from the book, so when you're completely confused on Thursday night trying to finish the 5 assignments due EVERY Friday, you can't even go back to the book for help!!! Let's put it this way--I failed the first midterm, barely passed the second one, felt like I failed the final and ended up with a C. Not too bad, but it's still hard to believe that half the class was doing worse than me, I thought I was at the bottom for sure. Maybe this is a clue on how this guy teaches--OR DOESN'T!! I appreciated his attempts to make us laugh, but it just didn't make up for how freaking lost and confused the vast majority of the class obviously was, considering a 49% on a midterm was average!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This guy runs this class like you are a math magor. EE's are required to take it and all you do is prove formulas and do no applications that may apply to what you want to do. What to say. This guy expects alot. On the other hand he is VERY fair. The test questions were expected and none were surprises. He understood that the class was for grad students and treated it as such. He spent extra time when it was required and ultimately was there for the students. I worked hard but thought I was getting no higher than a C. A few days prior to the final I found out I had the second highest grade in the class. I got an A and wont complain. The material was VERY interesting and VERY hard to understand but I walk away with an increased intrest in the subject area
