I took this class because it was the only section open, now I understand why it was the only section open. I advise you all to please avoid this class unless you are extremely knowledgeable about conceptual calculus. His tests are the hardest tests I've ever taken and he is very particular on what he wants. He is very passionate about what he teaches but for students who struggle with math this class will be extremely hard. But if for some reason you are one of those kids who loves math and is looking to learn it in extreme detail this is probably a good class for you.

Mr. Camp is super nice guy and after taking him once I feel I could do better the second time. He takes getting used to, because he doesn’t do a very good job conveying course material in lecture. He also depends on you to learn from your mistakes on tests and understand your weaker areas (he will go over any test problem in office hours). For students coming into his class, I highly recommend going to his office hours, because this is where he will really dive into the material with you and help you understand everything step by step. Also, Mr. Camps tests are usually very conceptual so I recommend doing the word problems at the end of each chapter to study. If you want to do well in this class, your going to have to put in the work. But regardless of the grade you get, your going to learn a lot.

One thing i can say about Camp is that he\'s fair. he lets you know what to watch out for and is usualy pretty generous with giving partial credit. the home work on webwork (15 problems per week) was kind of annoying but not too overwhelming. he definatly goes over what is on tests and quizes and goes over examples very clearly. hes a good guy overall and i wouldnt mind taking him again.

Everyone did so terrible in this class he had to curve so much that a 63 was a C. Does not require you to attend class, pretty much because he is a terrible teacher and knows that you will be better off teaching this to yourself. He is one of the only math teachers who doesn\'t teach on Fridays, but it isn\'t worth not having Friday class! Class is so boring you couldn\'t pay attention if you tried.

Professor Camp is a very knowledge math professor that is willing to help you if you ask. I never went to his office hours but I can only imagine how helpful he could be. During lecture, class can become very dull when he goes over the proof for most of the equations you will be using in Calculus 2. He provides very useful supplement worksheets on polylearn for your own benefit. I highly recommend you complete the practice problems because they will help you a lot on the midterm/final. Every day, he'll take 10-15 in the beginning of class to go over any homework questions but if not, he will go straight into lecture. He gives out weekly quizzes but they're very straight forward. His midterms are only 5 problems, with a few sub questions but they were very straight forward. Maybe one of the five questions will require you to think a little but if you complete the problems he puts on polylearn, they will not be difficult. His final consists of 15 questions that are straightforward if you study for it. I highly recommend Professor Camp if you are willing to put in work!

Honestly, one of the worst professors I have ever had. He gave me a D+, with a 69.87% in the class. Screw this guy. I showed up to every class and put way too much work into it. my roommate was in the same class, only attending the class when there was a quiz or midterm. He got an A in the class. This just tells you that you literally learn more in the class by not attending, That is just how bad mr. camp is. I even showed up to office hours multiple times, and he wasn't there both times. It was unreal. He just screwed me over during 100% of the times i tried to help myself. Not only that but he has never responded to an email that I sent him, or really answers questions clearly in class. Attend another professor's class. Avoid camp.

I truly don't understand why professor Camp has such low ratings. I had him for 142 and I purposely chose him for 143, and I will next quarter for 241. He gets pretty theoretical at times, but if you ask questions and put in the work do understanding the homework, you'll do fine. His quizzes are medium homework level and midterms and final a bit harder, but nothing he gives you will every be harder than the hardest homework. basically, DO THE HOMEWORK. he drops your low midterm and replaces it with the final if you do better on the final, and drops lowest homework and quiz. homework load is reasonable with short weekly quizzes that are really straightforward. he takes time at the beginning of each class to go over homework problems or whatever you want, and does a two hour study session on his own time outside of class and office hours before the final which are very helpful. he is also very helpful in office hours. awesome professor, nice guy, and really wants you to do well. definitely take him

Camp curves like crazy!! I failed 7 out of the 8 quizzes, failed both midterms, got a C on the final, and still managed to pass the class with a C. Make sure you do all the homework (correctly) and you're golden. Camp goes through everything subject really fast so make sure you're on top of your stuff and keep up with the material. Majority of the time, half the class was absent except on midterms and finals. Office hours didn't help. Sometimes if I ask him to clarify something, he just goes in a circle and never explains it well enough.

Professor Camp is a great guy with an extreme passion for math. With that being said, the guy is a horrible teacher. When lecturing to the class he is much more focused on why the math works the way it does then how the math works. He spends a large portion of class talking about proofs rather than giving examples. His hand writing when writing on the board for the class is illegible making it even harder to follow along. The second midterm was brutal and many students in the class did not do well. Professor Camp is nice guy, but I would not recommend him as a teacher for Math 142.

I was 10th rotation so my choice for Calc 3 were basically only this. I remember i was excited because even though i was 10th rotation i wasn't going to have a Friday class. But i was wrong. Alll Camp covers is theoretical stuff or proofs and always says look up the exact formulas because I don't remember them. Anything that he writes on the board is illegible, and disorganized. He also messes up like 3 times per example when he actually takes the time to do one. But in the middle of an example he will literally say oh wait this isn't going to work because heres this exception to what we are learning and then go off on a tangent about it but then be like oh wait never mind this does work. He often said he had to think about homework problems when you ask in class and to see him in office hours because he couldn't think of how to do them. He does problems differently than the book which I found to be much simpler. He spends so much time on his tangents and errors that he ends up having to start a new chapter literally a minute before class ends. If you ask a question or try to answer his questions he will make you feel really dumb. The only plus to taking him is from what I infer from other people's comments here: there may be a curve.

If you are unfortunate enough to be stuck with him, here is what you need to know: the most useful portions of his class are the review sessions before the midterms and final, and nothing else. He knows his math, without a doubt, but what he presents in class is entirely theoretical and not connected to what is on the homework or quizzes or exams. If you're attending class and not understanding him, the best way to begin to understand the material is teach yourself from the book and go to office hours. Class time is pretty much wasted with him, he writes incomprehensible things on the board and keeps the class late almost every single day. AVOID if possible

I have seen lots of bad reviews for Dr. Camp in the past, but in my opinion those are not justified. Dr. Camp is very smart and passionate about math, and this means that sometimes his lectures can be a little confusing because he is understands the subject so well that he explains it on a higher level than the understanding I had of the material. However, Dr. Camp is always willing to elaborate and answer questions, and makes a lot of support material like worksheets etc that can be helpful for understanding. He also holds a lot of office hours and even has special study sessions before midterms/ the final which are very helpful and which I appreciated a lot. The weekly quizzes in this class can be challenging, but if you do the homework which is required anyway, they are usually ok. Also a good way to evaluate how you are doing in the class. Midterms and finals are definitely fair, Camp isn't trying to trick you, he wants his students to succeed. Overall Dr. Camp is a really good guy who goes above and beyond to help students succeed, but can be a little difficult to understand his lectures the first time a concept is introduced. It is clear that even though he may not be the best math professor you have ever had, he is trying really hard, which is more than some professors here. Don't be afraid to take his class

Camp is a bitter guy, but he means well. He may come across as rude but he doesn't intend to be. Yes, he does go into theory quite a bit, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. He makes sure you deeply understand everything, which is ultimately what's important. Midterms are straightforward and oddly enough I found the quizzes harder than the exams. I would recommend Camp if you like math and care about learning it. If you want a professor who is less un-orthodox, don't take Camp. Overall, though, he's good.

Camp is ridiculously dull in lecture, and he always teaches things that you don\'t have to know. A lot of the things I had to teach myself because he didn\'t explain it well in the lectures. His tests are pretty easy, as are his quizzes, but the reading questions that he introduced this quarter are complete waste of time. He is pretty funny though, and is always really animated during class. He really loves to talk with his hands which is a little distracting but mostly entertaining.

I took Camp for Math 142 and 241. Absolutely the most boring lecture at Cal Poly. He knows his material and is very enthusiastic about the material, but does a terrible job at conveying the material. He teaches you the proofs of the subject, but never exactly how to use them. Quizzes are easy but tests are very hard. Teaches so theoretically that its impossible to see how to use it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

If your going to end up with a bad teacher, I would say he is a good choice. Camp likes to put proofs on the board and not actually teach you how to execute doing the math problems. He is overall very conceptual. The homework is never due, however he gives "reading questions" which force you to read the chapter ahead of class (and those you have to turn in, but he pretty much gives you credit just for writing anything down). the tests are moderate, and he gives a good amount of partial credit, but be prepared to answer some conceptual questions. He also gives quizzes about 1 a week. Camp himself is very nice and dedicated to math he just isn't the greatest at teaching it, and is not very interesting.

Camp is a terrible teacher and I would highly recommend against ever taking him. He does not teach you the material...at all. Most math teachers will lecture on the section and then do some examples or some homework problems. Camp will do proofs as to why we are able to solve a problem the way we do, i.e. proving theorems and other things that do not really tell you how to do the problem. If you have already taken the class or are a math major, you might enjoy this class. If neither of those things apply to you, be prepared to read the book and basically teach yourself the material, which can be really difficult as camp assigns Reading Questions for the next section due next class. You have to read the next section and answer questions on it before you can even start the hw, as the RQs are collected and HW is not. Who has time to spend 2 or 3 hours on math each day, but Camp expects you too. You do not want to get behind because the sections build on each other. Camp's worksheets are also complete useless as he never really explains the answers and just posts the solutions online. Also the quizzes each week are from the book, not from the lecture making it completely pointless to ever come to class, unless you want to see proofs. Once again, do not take this teacher, even in office hours, he is not helpful as he thinks you are able extrapolate how to do the hw from his lectures. Completely oblivious to the fact he isn't really teaching, but just explaining why math/concepts are the way they are. If you want a full explanation of Green's Theorem or some other expletive irrelevant concept this is the teacher for you. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE teacher. I have taken several other math classes at Poly and have never encountered a teacher so bad at teaching. You've been warned!!!

I have not finished this class yet so I do not have a final grade. However, I felt that it would be nice for people to see a review of Camp before choosing him for a class. So here it goes. I was 12th rotation last quarter and I needed to take calc 4 as well as some other things. Calc 4 was the only thing that had any sections open so I was stoked. Out of however many sections there were originally, there were only 2 left when I was registering. And both of them were taught by Camp. At the time I was like "sweet I am enrolled in a class." I could not have been more wrong. I honestly would've preferred to have been behind a quarter than take Calc 4 with Camp. I have always learned well when a teacher practices problems that you will need to know how to do. The more examples the better in my opinion. That is literally the opposite of how Camp prefers to teach. He spends 45 minutes of class doing a proof (not even simplifying the proof, he uses all the weird math notation that no one knows how to read straight out of the textbook) and then starts an example with 2 minutes left in class. So I figured I would do the homework problems that he assigns to try and learn the material. Even though I can do the homework problems, he adds weird conceptual stuff to the questions on quizzes and tests. I have never been so lost in a math class in my life. Half of the class shows up and I assume that that is because he confuses people. Camp is a nice human being and genuinely wants you to learn the material. He never gets frustrated when trying to explain the material if you do not understand it. However, there have been times where I have asked him to explain something and he makes shapes with his hands... He is passionate about math and is probably the smartest math teacher I've ever had. He honestly tries to convey the material but just doesn't do it in a a way that is easy for a student with no knowledge of the material to understand.

I ended up with a B-. Before the final (33% of the grade), I had a low A. The midterms were completely straight forward. The final, however, was written to be the entire final time of 170 minutes. Nearly the entire class didn't finish in the given time. The questions were not straight forward, he expected us to use tons of subs and formulas (which we thankfully had a sheet for). He wants to test us on our understanding of the concepts, but this test was more like seeing if we could figure out how clever and tricky it was. The final brought my grade down about 10%. I must've done pretty terrible, or he wrote a bad test.

Definitely recommend above others, he made Calc IV my favorite class from last quarter and if you pay attention and try hard, the final will not be that bad even if you didn't do as well on the other exams. Camp is great. The material is not the easiest, but he teaches it well and is always helpful and willing to answer confusion. He really cares about his classes. GO To STUDY SESSIONS!!! CONS:Camp's lectures are very dull, purely hand-wavy conceptual, disorganized and they DONT prepare you for the homework that you should do (not required), much less the exams! He discourages class participation by shooting you down for trying. He's not a mean dude, just not helpful. The exams can be very overwhelming and surprising. PROS: On the flipside, Camp is super generous with the curve (+15%). For example, I FAILED 2/3 exams, including the final and did poorly on the quizzes but I ended up with a C+ somehow. TLDR; Avoid Camp if you can.

I really don't get why he had a 2.7 when I looked at him on polyratings. He is a very good professor. Just a word of advice, don't rely too much on polyratings. The extreme ends of the grading scale definitely show excellence or a lack thereof, but the middle range isn't so accurate. Dr. Camp did a very good job of showing different angles of understanding (e.g. pictures, algebra, calculus) and was extremely thorough. However, this often resulted in time crunches at the end of class, but no worry, it was all worth it. His office hours were underused, and he was helpful if you asked. He has a high mathematical skill level, so it's a little harder for him to communicate complex topics in a simple way, but if you just ask in class or office hours, he is glad to help until you understand. His homework assignments, quizzes, and midterms were all fair (nothing unexpected, but not a cake walk). Tips for the class: pause and think about how to solve the problems before you jump in head first. This will save you lots of time, as Calc 4 is a bit simpler than the previous two classes.

I took Camp back in freshman year, but I wanted to come back and give him an eval because I thought his polyratings were very misleading. I went into the class ready for a bad quarter of math, seeing that his ratings were pretty bad at the time. Turns out, though, that he was actually a really good professor. His tests and quizzes were pretty straight-forward, and when they weren't, the grader was pretty generous (of course, this is just specific to my quarter). Before each exam he held a study session, and they were all pretty helpful. The beginning of the course started out rough with a lot of theoretical stuff, but after that point it was smooth. The only downside: the reading homework. Whether it helps the students or not, it was too annoying for me to acknowledge that it may have helped me. If you have to take Camp and you have a good work ethic, don't worry about his polyratings.

Camp is not a neither good nor bad and I will leave it at that. If you are generally strong in math, his class won't be too hard for you but you will not learn anything from him. His lectures are incredibly dull. He essentially will repeat what's in the Text book but in a more convoluted way. That being said, his quizzes are straight forward and the exams are rather easy. If you struggle with math and need a good instructor, this class will be hell for you. He is one of nicest professors I've had, but just cannot teach for shit. Very very average

What I have noticed while talking to several peers in this class is that, despite Camp\'s passion, he did not present the material well. He was very unclear and confusing in his presentation, to the point of where I would just zone off and do much better not attending class and teaching myself the material. During office hours Camp can be rather intimidating when explaining the material, and doesn\'t really support students trying to interact in the explanation process. To me, that\'s a sincere drag, because students need to come to conclusions themselves. Repeating things over and over simply won\'t make it sink in. The thing is, he\'s not a bad guy and he wants his students to learn... it just seems like he doesn\'t have enough patience to let the students mentally catch up.

Dr. Camp has good intentions, however, that does not make him a good professor. He seems unable to bring to material down to an understandable level, so you might as well avoid class and just read your textbook. In office hours he rarely lets you speak and if you don\'t understand a concept he just repeats himself over and over instead of clarifying it. It is clear that he wants you to learn the material, but he is awful at explaining it. He has a slightly pompous attitude during his lectures, making him not only confusing but irritating to listen to. Also, he has terrible penmanship on his homework solutions and on the board, not to mention he writes incredibly fast and stands in front of what he writes and speaks into the board. My advice would be to AVOID this professor for any upper division math courses and wait for somebody better (ie. Morgan Sherman for math 304). Some other information: Quizzes are roughly once a week and there is no collected homework. Also, with our class he allowed us to replace our lowest midterm with our final if the score was higher. For me, I would have preferred assigned homework and no quizzes, but that\'s just my preference.

The most difficult thing about Mr. Camp is realizing that the level of difficulty of his lectures is far above that what he expects from you on quizzes and tests. As soon as you realize that you only have to learn the basics of what he lectures on the class becomes much much easier, because you stop trying to think at his level and take in only what you need. Nice guy, projects his voice, fair on quizzes and tests. The class is 6 quizzes, 2 midterms and a final. Overall hard to follow in lecture and doesn\'t make it completely clear what you need to know, but all it is every time is the basics so as soon as you figure him out its a really easy course.

I do not want to judge too harshly, because this is his first time teaching this course (And only second quarter teaching), however I must say that I have never had a course where I have ever struggled this much ever before (Im a Engineer major with a 3.4 GPA). He almost always strictly sticks to the theories of math, then when it comes time to do the homework, you find yourself lost on how to apply the theory to real problems (And I mean COMPLETELY LOST). Hardly does any examples in class, and admits that he assigns the hardest homework problems. Every time I have been to office hours (Which is 5 or 6 times, and were in the 5th week), it seems like half the class is in there as well (which isnt a good sign). I asked 7 or 8 fellow students the day before our midterm how they felt, and every single one said they were clueless to what was going on in the class. Class average of the midterm was a low D. Like I said, it is his first time teaching this class, and he is passionate, but it takes more than passion to be able to teach this type of material.

Good luck if you have him. It only takes a couple minutes for him to lose track of the class in his lectures. He has awful penmanship, goes too fast, uses too many unnecessary and confusing variables, and skips many steps when writing work/solving problems. His tests are extremely hard, mostly since you have to teach yourself the material. In fact, the one lecture where we had a substitute was the day I learned the most. There had to have been a massive curve on the final exam because I'm sure I failed it, but somehow still got a C in the course. It hurts that he is the only Professor available right now for this course so there are no alternatives to him. I've taken Camp for 451, got a B, and now 452. Last quarter it was ok that his lectures were completely incomprehensible because the text book could teach me what I needed to know. This quarter the homework and exam questions often as not come from a non required textbook or his lectures. He did his post graduate work in mathematics at Caltech. This means he's one of the smartest mathematicians in his field I'm likely to ever encounter. This says nothing about his ability to teach however. If you are the type of student who just needs someone to present the material once for them to master it then he is likely ideal for you. If however you need a teacher who can help you actually learn this professor will be a nightmare. In my opinion he would thrive as a professor at a University where he can have his graduate students teach his classes while he conducts research. At Calpoly he is a poor fit.
