Professor Garcia is a solid teacher. The class was pretty straight forward: online journal posts, group project, midterm, final, and participation all factor in. The homework is pretty simple and won\'t keep you too busy. Keeping up the readings can be challenging though. However, if you dislike power point lectures, be prepared to be very bored. Also, the tests were multiple choice but were not that easy. Some of the questions cover very minor details that are briefly mentioned in one sentence of the reading and not mentioned at all during lecture. You\'ll definitely have to know the material to get an A though its pretty easy to get a B in the class.

Garcia is an OK teacher. She makes you come to class to take the notes that are exactly from the book. Every lecture is just going over what you read the night before, so don\'t bother reading. There are 4 journal entries that you must complete about key terms from the reading and she grades the first one pretty hard. Study hard for her tests though because she is not an easy grader. Overall the class was boring and uneventful. Don\'t take her if you can avoid it.

Dr. Garcia is REALLY cool! I was having a lot of problems in teh beginning of this class and she helped me so much in office hours. I\'m actually getting an A now! I think she\'s famous too. My friend goes to Stanford and he had to read one of her articles for his class.

Garcia is organized and planned out the class well. You just have to show up and take notes and you can do pretty well plus the material is interesting.

Dr. Garcia is a fantastic professor who truly cares about her students. Her class is not easy, but if you follow along with the book and attend all the lectures an A is definitely possible. But like most classes, you definitely need to work for an A! Go to her office hours!!

An okay class... the material was pretty interesing, Professor Garcia was excited and presented material very clearly. I thought the tests would be much easier... but they're not. She grades very fairly on the large project and presentation, though (the Norm Violation). My group got 100% and we didn't have to put too much effort into it. Definitely worth reading the book as there are questions on the test from the book and not lecture.

Fantastic professor. She's really interested in the subject matter, which makes the lectures a lot more interesting. It's a very dynamic class; you'll constantly be getting into groups for little activities and discussions which can be pretty fun. The big project is the norm violation project, but it's a group project so it's incredibly easy and is actually pretty laid back and enjoyable! The midterm and final are pretty straightforward, though a little tricky at times. Most of it comes right from the lecture notes and readings (which I suggest you do, since the test covers things that are in the book but not in lecture), though some requires you to apply what you've learned (these can be tricky). Super relaxed class with very interesting subject matter. Only reason I got a B+ is I was up all night doing nothing and passed out while studying the following afternoon. Messed up on the final, which by the way is NOT cumulative! Chill.

Dr. Garcia is a wonderful professor. She is professional, excellent at leading class discussion and lectures, and cares about all of her students. I am a psych minor and met with her as a minor advisor and she helped me plan out what classes were the best fit for me and what I want to do- something she definitely did not have to do, she could have just signed my paper. I actually loved her class enough to be taking a different psych course with her next quarter. The midterm was difficult but fair, the project wasn't easy but it was also completely manageable. Very interesting class with a lot of real life application. Just make sure you read the book.

Dr. Garcia is an incredible professor. She provides a study guide for her tests in advance, which are helpful when approaching the reading. Most Psychology classes are reading-intensive, but I felt this text was easy to read. What sets this professor apart from others is her willingness to work with students. The catch is, YOU have to seek her out! I encourage all to go to her office hours within the first week, if not just to introduce yourself. She is a great resource for those considering graduate school--even as freshman she offered a lot of great insight. I received a B because at the time I had not fully developed strong studying skills. If I took it now, I would certainly get an A.

Good teacher and pretty straight forward class. A couple minor problems with clarity in what is expected for an A paper, but nothing terrible.

She is a very nice person. Uses overhead for all her lectures. Just one midterm and a final. Three papers which are fairly easy. The tests are 50 questions, multiple choice but are very hard! Definitely need to read the book and memorize almost everything from the lecture. Like I said she is very nice but the way she teaches makes her class more difficult than it needs to be.

In the beginning of the quarter, I was so interested in the topics and she was a pretty nice professor. But slowly I started to realize how biased she really is towards her student's. I didn't really care about that because if I just did my work, I'd pass the class. However, after only studying the lecture notes and finishing the study guide for the first midterm, I learned that nothing she taught in class was relevant to the midterms, and everything is solely from the textbook. There are two midterms, so if you bomb one, you're probably not going to do so hot. Her test aren't extremely hard, but she's the type of person who throws in very similar answers and tries to trick you. She also assigned group work and she doesn't go over the rules and basically sets you free to your assigned groups. I really wanted to like this class because it was one of my first gender classes, but she made this experience horrible. She didn't reply to her emails and never properly answered student's questions (she'd give a vague answer that was unrelated or completely skip through it). This class consist of only three things, 2 midterms and a group project. So you're basically screwed if you don't do good on one assignment. Would not recommend this person to anyone.

I am currently trying to switch my major to psychology, so I initially signed up for this class just to fulfill the change of major requirement. I ended up absolutely loving this class. It was the one of the most valuable classes that I have taken in college and I am so grateful that I took it. The class was very interesting and I looked forward to going to it everyday. Her grading is very fair, it's based on 2 midterms, participation and a group project (so your grade doesn't depend on just test scores). If you put in the effort, you can definitely get a good grade. I recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn about this subject, whether or not it counts for your major. Professor Garcia was one of the best professors I've had at Cal Poly and it is very obvious that she cares about her students and the material that she is teaching.

I absolutely loved the class and the professor! Dr. Garcia presented a lot of interesting information during her lectures and showing up/taking notes was important because exams (1 midterm and 1 final) contained questions from lectures and in-class videos and guest presentations. Her exams are straight forward and if you want a good grade, you have to earn it by simply reading the book, notes and the study guide. Not much to ask, is it? I loved that the papers were graded blindly and I loved the freedoms she gave us in group presentations and the final group paper. I was appalled to read a not so positive review of the class and the professor especially because I had the totally different experience in the same class and during the same quarter. I learned a lot in this class, which is somewhat unusual for a graduating senior because by the last year most classes just regurgitate same theories but in different light. This class put a new spin on many topics and Dr. Garcia was amazing at instructing. I highly recommend this teacher and this class.

I've had this professor more than once and while I aced the course it was not worth the psychological trauma I was put through. At first she seems great, she pretends she likes you and is sooooo supportive. After you get comfortable with her however she starts to rip into you in any way she think will hurt. I can't tell you the number of times I have cried because of this professor and what was said to me. She speaks in a demeaning way while putting on this facade of kindness. She acts helpful but really she is trying her best to tear you down. My recommendation? Don't take her!! Don't put yourself through what I was put through- the details of which I am actually afraid to share for fear of her coming on this site and recognizing me.

Dr. Garcia is amazing! Psy 470 is Special Advanced Topics and Dr. Garcia's section is Social Psychology of Prejudice. This class was great you learn a lot about prejudice from both the perspective of the prejudiced person and the person at the receiving end. I took this in Spring 08 which was the first quarter it was offered. Grades were based 3 exams, all multiple choice and short answer with extra credit available; being the discussion leader for a day which you did with a partner; and a brief (5 pages, I think) research paper and presentation which was also done with a partner. The assignments were interesting and really didn't take much time to do. My partner and I talked to Dr. Garcia before we were discussion leaders to make sure we were on the right page with what she was looking for. She was very helpful and we got a near perfect A. The content really makes you think about how we preceive others. I definitely recommend this class.
