This professor presented the material quite thoroughly. She DID take an interest in students and would do anything she could to help clarify any difficulties. Her class was laid back, but there was a workload. I feel I have a firm grasp on general chemistry even though the course was not cake. I hope to take her class again, and hopefully she will become a permanent Cal Poly faculty member. She does not deserve a poor rating just because a student cannot perform up to par. I recommend her to any student who wants to learn chemistry at a fast, productive pace.

This instuctor was fun and full of energy. She told funny jokes that would all us retain the material in our heads. I did get a C, but I feel no other instructor could have made me understand chemistry any better. I recommend this professor to anyone. Don't take her if you just want a great grade; take her if you want to be prepared for engineering chemistry--isn't that why we are here at Cal Poly...to learn?

This Visiting Professor is one that I hold with upmost respect. She takes the time to individualize most of her students in a fairly large class, this is something that is not required of her. When you respond to her warm personality, you will find that she can be a witty, knowledgable, and helpful mentor. She transcribes much of her sylabus from Professor Bailey so many of her lectures, labs, and assignments are lifted from the much more difficult professor. This supports Baker's unwillingness to consider a curve for the class. Although, she is willing to accommodate a struggling student with the course material. In fact, she has a great way of making you feel like getting a 'C' in her class is really good. Thank you Dr. Baker.

Dr Baker was a great teacher for chem 124. She lectured very well and you could always come to her with any questions(my cluster even chose to ask her advice on matters not pertaining to chem such as girl troubles and she just laughed and never got mad.) she really made class fun and informative. She does not curve so you do have to study and learn your material but if you follow her lectures and examples or for extra help go to open lab hours you should be sure to get a passing grade.

Dr. Baker's lectures are pretty boring, but she makes them neatly on power point and puts them online. But, she goes pretty fast through the material. Her tests are pretty hard...I studied my ass off. One good thing, she's pretty helpful after class.

It seemed to me that Dr. Baker likes to make a hard class even harder. Her tests are long and study guides mislead students to think studying materials from there would make them prepared for tests. There's tons of things that are not in the study guides and she also makes some questions very vague. In an attempt to explain my view on a question, she refused to see it that way and maintained HER WAY on the issue, no matter what. I hope Cal Poly gets rid of her. I fear seeing her.

She is a really good teacher, and I think if I had had another teacher my grade would have been even lower. The course itself is very difficult, but she did her best to help us understand such a complicated subject. She was accesable during office hours and thouroughly answered questions in class. The T.A.'s weren't that great, so she helped us a lot individually also.

She is an energetic lecturer, especially for a morning class. She presents the material clearly and thoroughly. If you pay attention to the lecture and understand the examples you should have no problem in her class. But beware she goes through the material at a quick pace and there is no curve.

This teacher on various occasions went off topic by adding sexual connotations to her lectures. It really bothered me, while other people thought it was funny I felt it was offensive. To make things worse, this teacher did not seem to care much about her students. She took pride in making her tests as difficult as possible. Also, she sometimes would seem like she did not know the material as extensively as she needed to. In short, I would urge people thinking of taking chem 124 to not take baker.

Excellent lecturer, I never had to read the book once she explained everything in class and made easy and understandable. She has quizes and tests but if you go to class everyday and listen then they are cake. I barelly had to work for this class. The way she explains things helped me retain it right away. I did however make flash cards for some material and that helped a lot, I actually thought I was going to get a B because she says she doesn't grade on a curve but I think she does in the end. Great Teacher!!

Dr. Baker is a great professor and Cal Poly should hire her permanently. She cares about Chemistry and she cares about her students. She is helpful in class and also during office hours. Dr. Baker really knows her stuff. There is a lot of information and you can't blame her if you don't put the time into it. Going to her office hours is a garunteed way to feel confident about your knowledge. She is willing to really take time with her students and repeat anything you need until you understand the material. Her office is often full during scheduled hours, but she willingly stays late or will arrange more times so that everyone is taken care of. She is one of the few teachers here at poly that doesn't ACT like a zombie.

She was way too hard. I studied every night for over three hours and studied atleast ten hours extra for every quiz and test. She gave out tons of homework and her labs were impossible. I was incredibly lucky to pull an A after working my ass off all quarter. I didn't learn very much because we were always going to fast to actually absorb any knowledge. I would never take her again and would never reccomend anyone to her.

How could anyone NOT love Dr. Baker? She is absolutely wonderful...an awesome professor. The class itself was very difficult and it covered a lot of material. There was a ton of homework, but it really prepared you for the tests and the quizzes, and you got points for it-which helped a lot in the end. The midterms were really hard, but you just have to study everything she gives you. She makes a point of getting to know everyone, and it's obvious she really cares how her students do. And she was very willing to help you with anything you needed during office hours. However, she doesn't curve. Although how I got an A...I'm not sure...she says she doesn't curve... Basically, if you want a good chemistry experience, take Dr. Baker! She's awesome!

I have never worked so hard in a class for such a low grade. She really knows what she's talking about and is really enthusiastic in class. This course requires a lot of time and work; usually you will have an exercise and a lab report due on the same day and you'll have to take a quiz. Her tests are pretty tough and she doesn't curve. Her office hours are excellent. I believe you can learn more there than in class. She will spend as much time as you need on any topic as long as you're serious about learning it. My advice, if you want to work pretty hard but get a good understanding of basic chemistry take her, but if you're kind of a slacker, like me, you might want to go elsewhere. I suppose taking her at 7:40 a.m. didn't help me either.

Baker was a REALLY hard prof but she just wants to make sure you know your stuff. She has really good office hours and those help so much. She's not the prof to take if you just want that "easy A," but she's not the worst. Just keep up with all the assignments and learn to deal with her pickiness about the lab write-ups/pre-labs. If you can manage to get the A, you don't have to take the final.

Dr. Baker is THE BEST chem teacher. She knows her stuff, and you really must work your butt off to get a decent grade. If you want an easy A do not take her class; but if you want to pass the common final, take her class. Seriously, all of the other chem teachers (except Clemens and Christina Bailey) do not know how to teach at all. The class is fast-paced, with hard quizzes every Friday. The Chem Lab with all of the computers is also kind of a cool setup. If you take her class, you will learn a whole lot of interesting information about Chemistry.

What to say about Dr. Brenda Baker...Well, I thought I wanted to kill myself the first few weeks of school this year. The amount of homework she gave was pretty insane. A few weeks into the quarter, though, I realized it was probably more of a freshman shock. Yes, most of my time and energy went towards chem, but it definitely pays off. She's fair, nice, funny, and she can be a real bitch to some people (in that funny sort of way). Her office hours are very helpful, and you are going to need them. Her class did the best on the final, too, so if your priority is to just have an easy year and get a so-so or even low grade, then stay the hell away from her. If you are willing to work and get an A or B, then hunt her down. Just watch out for the conversations regarding alcohol and plunging, friction, and almost any other sexual inuendo.

She was great teacher. If it hadn't been for me being lazy, I could have easily gotten a B. She is fair, nice and shows interests in how her students are doing. I don't know why she gets such high ratings. Since I've only had her I don't know what the other teachers are like. She is motivated to teach the class and she really wants to do it. I do not like the overall format of the class. There were some unfair grading policies (graded diagnostic quiz). She also quizzed on a worksheet she just handed out the last class period (no time for questions or feedback). Her worksheets are really challenging and I find her lectures inadequately explaining for the difficulty of the problems on her worksheets. To do well you need to work hard on the worksheets (make sure you go over your mistake by looking at her keys). I highly reccomend going in to open hours and getting extra help there. I started doing this at the end of the quarter and thats when I really started to understand things. She is really anal about the labs (her grader Everette) so get help on those too in open hours. The good thing is that since you do so many damn worksheets, I found that you dont' really have time to read (you won't have time anyway). Key = open hours, office hours, hardwork and correcting the worksheets.

I was taking this class as a "tech elective" because the Computer Science program went under re-accreditation, which sucked ass because I probably could have taken something a LOT easier. Dr. Baker is an excellent teacher. Even though you will be loaded with TONS of work, you'll be forced to learn the material. I often found myself not having to study as much for exams because they are a lot like the homework. If chemistry is vital to your future career path I would highly recommend her, otherwise I would steer clear.

This class is just hard. Dr. Baker does a very good job of presenting the material, but the assignments and labs are just hard. There are some ridiculously long worksheets in this class, 8 pages on Lewis structures is going just a little bit overboard. The formal lab reports were a true pain in the ass. Mostly because the format they gave on the website was unclear. This leads to an out of order lab, which docks you many many points because of of the TAs difficult grading. He gave absolutely no leeway to the students, but this is grading the professor, not the TA (who was a complete tool, he would always give wrong answers to any questions you asked, instead I would just wait to talk to Dr. Baker about any questions I had). The final for this class is just ludicrous, our class average was just over 50% and that was higher than the average for other teachers classes. I would recommend Dr. Baker if your major requires you to take Chem 124 like mine (CPE), but I wholeheartedly recommend avoiding this class at all costs if you can.

Dr. Baker is an excellent professor. The class is very challenging, and she will expect the most out of you. I think she is the only prof that requires formal labs, which are extremely difficult. I would recommend having the TAs or Dr. Baker look over these at least once before you turn them in, they are very picky about how everything should be. Her tests are fair, but be sure to study HARD because she does not grade on a curve. The final is insane, go to as many study sessions as you can handle and study a lot! There isn't too much homework, but the assignments are usually time consuming, and the TAs take off points for everything, so you should probably check your answers with some friends, work in a group or something. Overall, I really enjoyed this class even though it was before the sun rose. Dr. Baker is friendly and willing to help. Her office hours are a good resource, but they are at weird hours. Be prepared to work hard! Good luck!

Baker is a really nice lady and she really knows her chemistry. Her class is the best prepared going into the Chem 124 common final. Her tests are pretty hard, and the class averages aren't great. The key to her class is to mop up everything else. Exams are about 30% of your grade, the final is about 20%, but the remaining 50% is very ace-able. Great near perfect scores on all the labs and exercises and you will be in good shape. I was able to do good enough on the labs and excercises to make up for the fact that I did not do great on her tests. She claims she doesn't curve, but I think she does a little. If you want to learn chemistry and are willing to work, she's good.

Before you take chem124 make sure you have some high school chem background, so you wont' fall behind too bad in the beginning. HW load was....uhh....i dont' know, jus that there was always hw to be done. the course itself is rigourous. i'm not sure why they want to feed us so much chem, because i only NEED one chem class in my whole outline. she grades really HARD on lab reports, be very DETAILED on ur explaination and especially your conclusion. she grades on a point scale, and doesn't curve the class, which makes the class beg for a mere few points, so pathetic. tests pretty much covers evertying in lecture. the final was comprehensive and hard, because of problems submitted from other chem teaches

Dr. Baker is a hard teacher, but you will most deffinately learn the material from her. The Class: There is a lot of homework, formal labs (which normally take several hours), quizzes every week and a few midterms, plus a final. The weekly quizzes were hard, but made you keep up with material and ensured that you knew what was going on. Formal Labs are graded very toughly, and they need to be perfect to get a really high grade (have a T.A. look over the first few, then use a good lab as a template for future labs). The midterms were tough and the final was a bear. HOWEVER, I think that this is mostly just because CHEM 124 is a tough class. Dr. Baker will do everything in her power to help you succeed. She learned every student's name (80 students) within the first 2 weeks of class, and was always willing to clarify any questions or concerns. She makes sure that everyone really learns the material. Although she grades tough she is a really nice lady. She is patient and truly cares about all of her students. If you have time to dedicate to Chemistry and you are willing to work at it I would strongly encourage you to take Dr. Baker, I remember the things I learned in her CHEM class, much better than I remember what I learned in 125 with an "easier" teacher.

I'll just go ahead and say this. CHEM 124 is a hard class. It doesn't matter who your professor is, IT WILL BE HARD. But the good thing is that Dr. Baker is one of the best professors at Poly. Dr. Baker knows that the class is hard and that it has to move fast, and she is very willing to help. I never had to go to office hours or open hours. All I did was ask questions after class and I got the answers I needed. I had her at 7:30 AM twice a week, and 8AM once a week. Without her enthusiasm, I would have fallen asleep and never have woken up. Make sure you study for the weekly quizzes and 3 midterms. If you just "study" you will surely fail. Bottom line: take this professor. There's no point in taking an "easier" professor. All sections of CHEM 124 take a common final, and Dr. Baker does the best job of preparing you for it.

Professor Baker is an excellent teacher and perhaps taught me more than I could expect to learn in any future class here. The material is not terribly difficult, but the tests are (often there are questions that haven't been gone over); there is no curve for any of the tests or quizzes and the averages tend to be around 65% all quarter. Nonetheless, she gives a lot of homework assignments that tend to float the grade a little. Also, she gave us the incentive of giving us an A in the class if we got an A on the final (by the way - the final is difficult and the average for all the classes is 50%). Even if you get a C in the class, which about 85% of the students do, the teacher is definitely worth it!

I actually had Dr. Neff for half of the quarter, but she left to undergo surgery and Dr. Baker took over instead. Anyways, Baker is one of those chem professors who does nothing but eat, sleep and breathe chemistry, and it really shows in her lectures. It also keeps you awake for the period too! She is especially helpful during lab. The thing is though, no matter who you take this course with, CHEM124 is HARD, but Baker seems to do the best job of preparing you for the common final (in which the average is anywhere between 50-65%). Exam averages were around 60%, and yes, she does put a ton of tricky questions, but the extra credit assignments make up for it. Overall, recommended, but prepare to work your ass off.

Baker Baker Baker. Hated you all quarter for all the work and very hard exams/quizzes. Came to the common final, I was like, "Oh Sh#$!" I realized that you did in fact teach us all there was to 124 and you must have done a good job, because that final was the easiest thing I saw this quarter. If you get an A on the final, she gives you an A, regardless of what your previous grade is. And thats exactly what she prepares you for... crushing the final. First time I took CHEM124, I was like, damn this final sucks....came out with a D. Three years later, repeating it all over again, I tore that final a new one thanks to BB. This is a tough class, but if a slacker like me can ace the final, anyone can. Take Baker, you might struggle all quarter, but if you put in the effort, she will reward you in the end.

I'll say one thing good about Dr. Baker- she does a pretty good job preparing you for the common final. Otherwise, she sucks. She took over our class (dr neff's) part-way through the quarter and most everyone's grades dropped 10-15%. With Dr. Baker I failed a midterm and and 2 quizzes before I could finally pull a D on one of them. The average on her tests is ridiculous like 61 her something usually. She doesn't curve and writes her tests way too hard. She could teach ok but sure didn't test and grade like she teaches. I was surprised I was still able to keep a B in the class after my grade plummeted a ton. You MUST do the labs and assignments to just to stay afloat in this class, otherwise you will probably fail.

WOW...i never thought i'd be so happy to be done with chem 124. This is probably one of the gayest classes here at poly. First of all, the time you put into this class will not reflect your grade at all. I worked my ass off to get a C and it took up so much of my time. Hw, labs, studying for quizzes and midterms. The material is really tough so i really hope you have a grip on the basics of chem before you enter this class or you will suffer, literally. Baker can teach but everything is graded extreamly difficult and she writes her tests as if she wants everyone to fail. Average midterm scores are around 61 and she doesnt curve. Only does she offer extra credit when she realizes everyone is failing. Summary: Know the basics of chem coming in, do all the hw and labs, study hard for quizzes and midterms, and more importantly show up to every class.

I don't think Dr. Baker is one of the better professors here. I felt she tended to rush through her explainations. Othe tests and quizzes she would ask harder questions than she gave as examples in the class. I didn't like her test format. The tests consisted only of a few problems, but had many different sections to it, so if you didn't know the answer to part a, you couldn't find part b, and so on, so your grade suffered because you didn't know one part of the problem but knew everything else. She isn't a horrible professor, but if i had known better i would have chosen someone else.

Dr. Baker is absolutely the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. She knows everything very well, and she presents it in a way that's very easy to understand. She gets to know everyone's name and she wants you to do well. Office hours are awesome. There is a lot of work(excerises and labs) and her tests and quizzes are really hard, but if you make sure to know EVERYTHING you will do fine on them. I had her for chem 124 also, where I also got an A, but I worked about 10 times harder for an A in 125. and she doesn't curve. But if you want an awesome chemistry experience take Dr. Baker! I took Dr. Baker for Chem 124 and I got a B. I really liked her and so I took her again for Chem 125. Big Mistake!! She appears to be really nice and I'm sure deep down she might be. However, when I took 124 I was doing very well and she was always very helpful. But when I took 125 I really had to struggle to get a C and she is not very helpfull or very nice if you are not getting a high grade! I went to every open lab session and worked hard but the material was very tough. I went to office hours a couple of times but I didn't really come away with a better understanding. The class was very fast paced which is understandable but what was really bad was when the ta's would explain to her that the majority of the class did not understand something and she'd just be like well I'm sure they will later, quiz tomorrow! At times we would have extra time before a test and when instead of reviewing or trying to make sure we had a good grasp on it she would move on to the next chapter. The labs and the exercises were ridiculously lengthy, frequent, and not very helpful. Any points would be taken off for the smallest infraction. Also on the tests she changes equations around or makes information usually give in practice problems a little goose chase for you to figure out. If you couldn't do the first part good luck on finishing the problem even if you know your stuff. So if you are inherently genius in chemistry and still want to work hard then go ahead and take her because if you do well she'll be helpfull. But if your like me where you have to work hard then run away fast! It is very frustrating and not a good experience at all!!! I don't recommend this professor to the average or above average person, only people who could probably teach the class should take it.

If you already registered for her class, God help you... Brenda Baker is extremely intelligent and proficient. The problem is, her standards are that of a senior level course. She covers all material in depth fairly clearly, however her labs, quizzes, and tests are incredibly hard. The course material itself is hard enough unless your one of those few chemistry people, but the difficulty is compounded by the fact that she requires such detail and accuracy for anything being handed in. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep up in the class due to the large volume of labs and homework assigned. And worst of all, most of the material on labs, quizzes, and homework would be explained only a day or so before it's due, which leaves little time to learn the material, especially if you're like me and very little of it makes sense the first time around. Last, but certainly not least, the lab grader.... I don't know if she's going to keep the same grader (she probably will), but I simply say, we referred to her as the "Lab Nazi". If you ever had Tanikella, whatever you did in his class is not going to work with Baker. Don't misconstrue all my negative statements, Baker is in fact a great teacher with immense knowledge of her field. And if you really want to "learn" the material (which is what we're all supposedly here to do) then I would even suggest Baker. However, if you get/want her class, buckle up, get ready to work and have your ass handed to you after your done. Have fun....

What a class! Dr. Baker is a good teacher, but her class is way too hard. If you really want to learn the material, I wold recommend her, but if you just want to take it and pass, I'd take someone else.

This class was a tough one. The quarter goes by very fast so you have to keep up with it. The course material may not have been that hard, i just didn't dedicate that much time for it. Her tests are pretty hard but she does her best to help you learn the material. Labs are hard....formal labs required a lot of work and time.... and they are graded pretty hard. Overall, Baker is a great teacher, you just have to be ready to spend a lot of time in that class and study really hard. Office hours help a lot, and she is always willing to help you, work problems with you. I'd recommend her for 125, but be ready to put a lot of work in it.

Baker is a really nice lady, but her class moves really fast. It is not a difficult class material wise, however if you fall behind you are in trouble. That's what happened to me and I was left with a Dynomite. Take her, but stay on top of everything.

I really like Prof Baker as a teacher but I must say I didn't care for the material and I couldn't stand how the class was graded. This was by far the most effort i've never had to put into a support class. The lab reports (which i believe were graded by T.A.'s) were rediculous, extremely inconsistent and very nitpicky. I give Baker an 'A' but her class a 'C-'. Oh yea, that's the other thing i didn't like, no +/- grading.

What to say about Dr. Baker? Well this is what one would hope the college experience would be. Dr. Baker puts as much effort into the course as she expects from her students. The Grading: Labs are nitpicky. Homeworks are slightly more lenient. She does give partial credit on exams. There is no curve. It is difficult to get an A because of the sheer volume of work (expect to study and do labs/homework 5-8 hrs per week). The Good: Dr. Baker really cares about this class and it shows. She is well prepared and obviously is very familiar with the subject matter. Her office hours are also helpful. You will also learn lots in this class, including how to write a good lab report. The Neutral: Tests are difficult. Also, even though I got an A, I had to go to open hours a couple of times to understand the labs. The Bad: Test don't neccesarily test how well you know the material. You must know the material to do well on the exams, but time is a critical factor on the tests. Lots of people complained that they knew how to do a problem but didn't have time for it. You must also memorize a fair amount of stuff to do well. Overall, if you want a great, yet difficult chem 125 experience I would recommend Baker. If you are looking to cruise through chem, stay the (W#$& away.

Honestly, Baker is a pretty good teacher. Everything you follow in class will make pretty good sense to you if you go every day. There are two problems with this class that make it a problem. First, the labs. You have to staple your pre-lab to the back of your lab, otherwise you just get pretty much screwed. Even if you have the stamped, pre-lab there is pretty much no mercy. Also, she doesn't curve the tests which are pretty hard. If your class gets an F average well than that's too bad. So, overall you will learn a lot but just expect to putting a good amount of work into this class to come off with a decent grade.

Dr. Baker is a great teacher but she is a hard teacher and pushes you to achieve as much as possible. She knows what she is talking about and does a good job teaching it. Thier is alot of homework for this class and a good deal of studying but if you do all the work and show up to class(DO NOT MISS CLASS), you shold do fine.

Baker was a good teacher I thought. She teaches the subject before she lets you work on the lab and as you do the lab she walks around and answers students questions. She was very friendly and took the time to learn everyone's name which is a sign of caring teacher in my opinion. The quizzes and tests are not easy though. But overall I found the class very enjoyable.

Baker is definitely one of the nicer professors and understands that the class is hard. But she wouldnt have to do that if she didnt make her midterms and quizzes so fricken hard. I know that Baker is a challenging professor and so is chem 125. Time, time, time, is what this class takes and understanding chemistry. Study yur ass off and a decent grade is possible. Some useful tips: do the hw and labs and show up for class. O yeah, dont be late, she doesnt like that. Overall, a decent professor.

This professor seems to lack interest in her students. I wish she showed as much compassion for the success of her pupils as she does for the material. I hope that I never have to see her again.

She really wanted everybody to learn and do well. Visiting her in office hours are very important if you are having a hard time. The only things that were not too great was that she would always go back in her notes to ammend something or add more info and she had a hard time getting the visual aids to work, which wasted time.
