I had Daniel in S08. For intro painting the assignments were as follows: 2 black and white acrylic paintings of blocks. 2 black and white acrylic paintings of paper bags(the first focused on the general while the second focused on the specific). After that you have the option of moving to either color acrylic or color oils. The oils can be expensive; my set cost $245, but that is because I bought the larger volumes of paint. You could get the same amount of paint for mid 100's. For color projects: You have to do 3 paintings of food. Then we had a large painting of colored blocks. Finally, we had 2 self portraits due. He has changed the course some since when I took. As far as an instructor. Daniel provides good feedback on your work. He intentionally made an effort to talk with and learn every student's name in the class over the first 2 class days. On the downside: he has this annoying habit of reading his handouts(course outline, assignments, etc.) This gets to your psyche after some time.

Despite the fact that Daniel did not give any formal lectures, I feel that I learned a lot in his class. He makes sure to go around and talk to every student individually and discuss their ideas and technique. He is very straightforward, insightful, and helpful. He is also very personable and understanding--if you\'re having trouble or are falling behind, he will do his best to help, though he is by no means a pushover. I strongly recommend this professor.

I was surprised D. Dove didn't have more reviews... He is probably one of the best teachers I have had at Cal Poly thus far. I've had him for two classes now and have really enjoyed them, even when I didn't like the projects. His curriculum for beginning painting is pretty fair but a lot of work. We had two black and white still life paintings and three color paintings. We were supposed to have four color paintings but he got sick and missed a week of class. For color paintings we did a color still life, a self-portrait, and a self-directed content two spaces painting. I feel like he grades pretty fairly for a subject that is hard to grade. He looks to see if you are using the techniques we talk about in his mini-lectures and if you are improving, not how good you are at painting. We had two critiques, both of which lasted the whole of class. He is fine with going on tangents, which makes the critiques really interesting if you participate. He is really personable and fun to talk to, as well as direct and helpful with his advice. He is very good at articulating what needs to be changed to make the painting work. Sometimes he says really interesting things... I can't even explain but those moments are hilarious. He also plays great music during class. The only downside to the class is that the materials are really expensive and messy and you have to do a fair amount of work outside class.

Like most art teachers at Poly, there isn't much to complain about here. Dove is a great guy, with a good sense of humor and understanding of every students strong and weak qualities. Very down to Earth, and a total closet hipster. Also, he is WAY talented! That's the only intimidating thing about his classes, but nonetheless, he's a great painter and teacher.

Daniel critiques artfully and gives advice well, so win-win. If you don't know how to paint, that doesn't matter because he'll teach you how. A bit of a warning to all procrastinators, definitely take time to go to studio outside of class. We can all tell which paintings are allnighters.

I've had Daniel for two art classes now and I really can't say enough good things about the guy. Basically he's very knowledgeable and a very talented artist. On top of that he's a fun guy to be around. Take him. And if you don't.. good! ill get him again

Having an affair with a student. Manipulated her into breaking up with her long distance boyfriend so he could take advantage of her. This man needs to be dropped from the university staff, disgusting person.

Daniel is definitely an interesting professor to say the least. He is not a very hands-on painting professor, that is to say he will not necessarily be teaching you any physical skill sets with a brush, but is extremely helpful in terms of conceptual development of the ideas, motifs, and methods behind your work. He will not touch your work, which is great, I have had too many teachers in the past that just start working on your piece in the way they see fit; Daniel is more encouraging of experimental practices and allows students to discover that within their own work over time. You have to keep in mind that though he has his own preferred visual vocabulary, he is extremely professional and is open to the ideas of all students and is helpful in every way he can be. He is understated and the classes are rather large, so I recommend speaking to him outside of class during his office hours as an effective way to take full advantage of him as your professor.
