She was always helful in her office hours and she rewarded students that showed effort in her class. Her lectures were very informative and I always felt like I had a handle on the subjects that she explained. She desinged the whole Chem studio and it shows... she knows her stuff.

A lot of people I talk to say that Bailey is a really hard prof. Now, I had a pretty good chem background in high school, so I expected this to be a breeze, which it was. I didn't take any notes for this class. I relied on what I already knew and what she said, so I figure she was able to explain the material well in class. Tests were more on the hard side but graded fairly relative to the class. I took this class awhile back before the new studio lab, but I did have her for the lab component as well. She has personality in her teaching style and I'd say a fairly well demonstrated mastery of the material.

The tests cover information which was never really done in class. Everything is theoretical in class, and no examples are done. Unless you are a chem head, my advice is take someone else, anybody else

The class was well set up and she knows her stuff. I took Chem 124 before the studios were set up but I had her for lab, too. Her lectures explained the material well.

Dr. Bailey is probably one of the hardest professors at Cal Poly, but she sure knows what she's talking about. She is always prepared, and able to answer questions. Her lectures are easy to understand if you don't sleep through it and pay attention the whole time. Her classes tend to move a little faster than most, so not all material is covered in class, you got to use her web page and find out what you need to know. She grades extremely fairly. She weight improvement into your grade, i went into the final with an F and got a C because I just tried hard. My Advice: Go to open lab, her office, and if you have questions email her, she answers back in like 5 minutes sometimes.

Dr. Bailey was one of the worst professors yet. She had a difficult time understanding what the students were doing, and thinks everyone is on the same level as she. She couldn't teach worth a lick, but offered so much extra credit, it was impossible not to pass the class. This made up for her poor teaching skills. Tip- Do not ever take Bailey for anything!

Professor Bailey knows her stuff and it shows. Her lectures were a little hard to follow, since I am not a chem genuis. She presents the material well, but supplemental reading is required for the average student. Be warned: Her tests are hard! Not all material on the tests is covered well in class. Also, I didn't like her use of a ton of extra credit to balance out the low class grades. Make sure and do all of the extra credit, or you will be in trouble.

It is a difficult class and Baily does a poor job of prepareing you for the tests. She will usually pick the hardest material to focus her test questions on. You must study absolutely everything to be prepared. Sometimes extra credit is available, and labs can raise your grade. It is very possible to recieve a good grade, but most of your preparation will be done on your own and without her help.

Bailey is a teacher that gives a lot of extra credit on the tests. That is good, but the extra credit keeps you afloat. She doesn't explain everything THAT clearly, but I was in a SI so my grade was helped by that. I would recommend if you have her take a Supplemental instruction and go to office hours. But if you don't have that much time, take someone else.

Many students feel that she is a bad teacher...I disagree. Yeah she might be hard, but that is not because of her it is because Chemistry 124 is damn hard! You work your butt off and she will like you and sway her grades accordingly. Go to her office hours at least once a week and take the SI and participate in class and you will at least get a C+. I had an average of a 74% at the end of the quarter and she gave me a "B". Just be ready for a hard class, and long LONG classes:)

I feared this class. It was kind of a second hell. She never did any examples. Nothing was ever clear. She gave pop quizes. I've heard all bad things about her, but heard all good stuff for Mr. Meisenheimer (Poncho), so take him instead. Please.

Many students do not give this professor the credit that she deserves. She knows her stuff and is more than willing to help you master the material. All you have to do is: (1) ATTEND LECTURE (I can't stress this enough); (2) visit her during her office hours (she is VERY helpful one on one); (3) stay on top of the reading; and (4) JUST BE NICE TO HER -- and I'm not saying that you have to brown nose! What I am saying is that she is human, just like the rest of us, and I guarentee that if you are polite, she WILL show you kindness in return. But like with any college class, you wil only get as much out of these 2 classes as you put into them. BE PREPARED FOR HER QUIZES!!!! Doing well on these will REALLY make the exams and the final less stressful. The reading isn't essential but it will REALLY help you if you read the material before the class. Finally, make sure that you pay attention in the labs; they compliment the lectures very well!

Dr. Bailey is an awesome teacher and an awesome person. She is really good at lecturing, and even better at helping you one on one. If you don't understand, you can always email her/go to office hours. The tests are really hard, and have averages around 50-60% but if you put effort into the class, she'll know and most likely give you the grade you deserve. I wish I could take a class with Dr. Bailey again, but sadly I'm done with Chemistry.

Dr. Bailey was one of the worst teachers i have ever had. Her tests were extremely hard, you have no idea what to study. she doesnt give many examples in class and then will put that same material on the test that she only spent 2 minutes going over and there was no multiple choice.the lectures were incredibly boring. Her one good point was that she was friendly and willing to help students during office hours.

she can't explain anything, expects YOU to check her online syllabus daily for announcements...like the prelab quiz that was worth 10 pts that only 3 people knew about! She does that kind of stuff all the time, and bottom line, she sucks at getting the information across on a level the students can comprehend!

Bailey starts off by being really intimidating and her first couple of tests are. You've got to take this class seriously, you've got to put in the hours, and you've got to go into her office hours. She doesnt curve, so when you fail the test, you FAIL the test, no curves, nothing to make it easier, nothing. About Mid-quarter, when everyone is failing she emits a ray of light in making there more points available on the test then the test is out of (example: 115 points available, on a test out of 100) and she starts to be really nice and caring. In the end, you feel like there's a possibility that you might actually do OK. She's also funny and throws in funny things like, "I'll hit you with a whipped Strawberry Twizzler" and in those situations, theres no reason to do anything other than laugh and pray that she's in that kind of mood when she grades the comprehensive final...

FUCK YOU BAILEY!!! This was a travesty of a class. I have always been a straight A student, but this quarter I got all A's and one D, from Bailey. Her lectures were extremely dull and uninformative. The material she tested for was often not even touched upon in lectures, and it was almost impossible to do well on the tests or quizzes, which were given once a week. I only recommend this class if it is your only class during the quarter and you are willing dedicate ten weeks, night and day to studying this bullshit material.

Chemistry sucks!!! The lecture/lab is a novel idea but it turns out that there wasn't that much lab. Truth is that she just talks for 3 hours. It's boring and hard to pay attention. She doesn't let you know what is going to be on the tests, and as a result the class average on most tests was between 50 and 60%. The class is hard so put some effort into it and form a study group, because otherwise your going to end up taking the class over.

She is a very difficult and demanding professor in all aspects. Most of her quizzes and all of her exams are impossible but in the end she messes with the grading scale to compensate. I would still recommend her over others because she developed studio chem at cal poly.

She is the worst teacher i have ever had, both here at cal poly and back in high school. She can't explain the material, so if you like to learn by reading the book and teaching yourself then it's fine. Also the tests/quizzes are on less than a quarter of the material that woould be covered in a section, and all tests and quizzes are cumlitative, so she will ask specific questions about topics covered a month or two prior. Terrible. Avoid at all costs. Spawn of Satan.

Christina Bailey might have a bad rep, but she is actually a pretty good teacher. Chem 124 is just a hard class in general, so expect to do a lot of studing. Christina Bailey is very helpful at her office hours, and she will try to answer any questions you have. She is very reasonable and easy to get along with. Out of all the Chem teachers, I would suggest you take her.

Heres the deal with Bailey: she knows her stuff damn well...so im not going to argue that she doesnt, because it is obvious. However, her ability to teach is so shitty its a joke. Not ONCE has she explained something clearly, and then given us the assignment. She ASSUMES that everyone knows what shes talking about and that they already know the material. This is such a joke. Cal Poly needs to rethink hiring her or whatever. They need to have someone sit in the first week of her class and THEN they will understand why so many students fail and have an extremely stressful and difficult time with her. With Bailey be prepared to do a lot of self-teaching, as conveying material to the student clearly is where she gets a FAT F.

I dont understand why everybody on this website says professor bailey is so bad? i thought she was the best professor i had for the whole quarter. she was nice, very willing to help and she is a totally cool teacher. i thought i was going to fail after the first quiz, but then i went and saw professor bailey in her office hours and she gave me hope, she cleared up things i had questions about and then she started adding extra credit possibilities on all the quizes and midterms. The quizes arent bad once you learn how to study them and if you study your ass off for the midterm you will pass them. I found the final to be real hard but i was on sleep deprevation...no surprise when it comes to finals week. For all of you that dont like bailey and think she is mean...screw you! if you talk to her and ask her for help she will help more than you could ever think. "she's ms. Bailey ooo wooo wooo she's ms. Bailey!"

She is quoted as to saying "If I ever teach you anything raise you hand and tell me and I will stop". I am not joking. Learning will come from the book, other studnets, and yourself. Tests are fair but the grading is not (from both her TAs and herself) (there is zero curving). By my calculations 50% of our class got a D or an F. Class averaged a 56% on the common final, I wish I knew what other classes averaged. I also disagree with the course itself, the material is worthless.

I hardly passed this class, but it is NOT because I didn't study or try hard. Many days she would sit there and lecture for 3 hours, and didn't care that half her class was falling asleep. I went to her office hours MANY times to get help, but she was no help there either. She did not try to help you understand the material, she just did her lecture and that is all she cared about. The only reason people pass her classes is because she has to give everyone like 75 extra points at the end because she can't have the whole class fail...

Any professor who tells the class that it is not her job to teach is in dire need of a reality check. What did we used to call them in high school...TEACHERS? oh, i guess now that they are "PROFESSORS" their job is no longer to teach anything. We must rely on our fellow students who are just as lost as we are, and our Tom Clancy-like thriller of a chem textbook to teach to us the intricacies of thermodynamics. Tests and quizes in no way relate to the labs or class work we do so thery are impossible to study for. Just dont take her, its a simple as that. Class averages on tests in the low 50's? Just think about that.

I don't know if it was just the integrated lab/lecture setting, but this Bailey is HEll. Don't mind my grade, I only survived because I studied my ass off and went to the SI workshop every week. She admits she does not teach, I believe it was "If I teach you anything, tell me so I won't do it again." Labs take up the whole time, so you learn nothing valuable, like, say, what will be on the test. If you get stuck with her, GOOD LUCK!

DONT TAKE DR. BAILEY! DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET ANOTHER PROFESSOR.

Chem 124 is going to be a hard class no matter what, it is a weeder course. We covered everything i learned in high school chem in the first fifteen minutes of class. But Bailey wants you to pass her class and is always willing to help and is actually quite easy to talk too even if it doesn't seem like it. All the hand outs and what not are worth doing even if they are not graded. Material is presented clearly even if it is hard to pay attention. I started with single digit percentile grades on the first couple tests but still pasted the class. All you need to do is show improvement, go to her office hours, and show her that you want to do well in the class. Warning: The final is PAINFUL. After taking it, I had the distinct feeling i had just been kicked in the balls.

This lady should be fired, but of course that is impossible because her husband is a Dean at this school!!! She is horrendous at conveying information in a clear way. She clicks through her Slide show in NO PARTICULAR order, gives NO examples in class and expects students to get them right on homework and quizes. But the thing that really sucks is the lack of learning going on. I had a 62% going into the final, and because of the rest of the class's poor performances she had to curve the class to save her ass and I recieved a 76%. If there is one thing she taught me it was that bad teachers can make it, and maybe that's why teachers don't get paid much.

The class is tough, bottom line. The weekly quizzes help to keep you on your toes so the midterms won't kill you. Study the quizzes because they build upon each other and are similar to the midterms. The final will kill you, however it's the same for all professors so you can't get around it.

Professor Bailey does not deserve all the low reviews for Chem 124, they come from students who think they can just show up to class and easily pass. She is not the best teacher, but she is extremely smart and willing to clear up any questions or concerns. If you want to succeed, you are going to have to do a lot of learning outside of the classroom, mainly from reading the book and watching chem videos online. The lab was also helpful in clarifying concepts, and the lab/lecture setting is state of the art. Overall she is not the greatest teacher at poly, but compared to other Chem teachers, she is one of the better ones. She really cares about her students, even if she seems somewhat intimidating at times. Definitely go to office hours if you need help and she will be more than willing to work with you. I had never taken chemistry before this class, and in the end i really enjoyed it

FAR AND AWAY THE WORST PROF AT POLY

Bailey is a challening professor, however, she is an excellent teacher and communicates with her students well.

With no real desire to have her students understand why or what they are doing, she seems to know that no one will pass her exams. Be aware that 55% was the average grade on them. Her solution? Put 150 points on an exam and only grade it for 100 points. Don't take her classes if you're at all interested in learning chemistry, 'cause it won't happen.

All I have to say is........THE DEVIL!

Dr. Bailey is one of the worst teachers ever. She reams people on tests, and unless you are ***..., and love to kiss ass, you won't get an A. She couldn't explain things, and her labs were for 5th graders. Her tests were way different from anything done for the class, and unless you were a super genious, then you won't understand. My suggestion, try taking a different proffesor

First and foremost, Dr. Bailey is a HARD teacher. Her test ARE difficult. However, I also learned more about chemistry in her class than I ever thought I would. There was only one instance that something was on the test that I didn't think I had seen before. I HAD seen it before, I just wasn't paying attention at the time. Bailey was very willing to answer my questions and help me out whenever I needed it. However, she IS a strong woman and I can see some lesser males being intimidated by her.

You can tell that she does know a lot about Chemistry and is quite excited about it as a whole. Other than that, though, her lectures were extremely rushed and just power points of the book, she doesn't care at all about her students or answering questions. Her lab reports are a damn enigma to figure out what the hell she wants, and she has no moral dilemma in giving people a 15 out of 100. For the first half of the quarter, everyone will have F's, but then she tries handing out gobs of extra credit so people can try to pass. It was hell, quite frankly. Plus her aides were dumb as hell and didn't help one bit, only to be her guard dogs and try to see if you cheat on a test. In order to pass this class, you must be able to read the chapters by yourself and learn chemistry by yourself.

This quarter was hell!!! She seemed to be an ok teacher, however, her midterms were impossible! She would give us lists of what to study and then the majority of the test would be on the material she didn't mention. When asked for help on e-mails she would e-mail us back in a condescending way, telling us that we should allready know this by now, making us regret having even asked for help. Her labs, likewise took forever to understand, plan on spending at least 6 extra hours outside of class working on the lab just to understand the directions. She does seem to know a lot about chem but doesn't care if her students ever do. She spent a lot of time proving to us that she knew her material, but none of it helping us learn it. Trust me, if you want to have a good chem quarter, stay away from Bailey!

Ok, so this whole quarter just plain sucked. This class was much of the problem. I had a firm grasp of 124 and thought that this class was going to be just the same. But, my god, Bailey was horrible. Everything that is on her tests and quizes she does cover. However, some of the reoccuring stuff that was on them she covered for a whole 3 minutes. I think that's how she gets by when you say that she never covered it. You have to be paying attention for the whole 2.5 hours in order to stand a chance. She grades horribly. No partial credit. Not even for attempting the problem. I had never heard of that. Listen to me when I say that you want to avoid Dr. Bailey. In fact, drink some Baileys before you go to her class. It's the only way you will be able to tollerate this class.

Bailey doesn't want to be your friend, and she probably doesn't even care if you like her. She knows that she is there to teach, and that's it. The class was a lot of work, but it would be with any teacher. If you're not too lazy to do the reading in a text with lots of pretty graphics, you will get a good grade. Checking the online syllabus regularly is not difficult, and worth the time.

If you are good in study independently....choose her! She's really friendly. She really knows her materials. She gives good explaination on how chemistry relates to health or funtions in our body. If you are looking for "curves" on exam, don't take her. The materials she present in class are mainly from her print out, hardly from the text book. Also, if you are the type of person who needs to see every rxn or calculation in details, she's not your choice. She is not the type that will sit down with you and write out every single detail. JUST BE READY FOR THE BIG LOAD!

Dr. Bailey is a frustrating professor to have. She loves to pull little tricks on her quizzes and exams. She is constantly giving in-class and online quizzes, online assignments or exams so you have to be on your toes the whole quarter. And each time she tests on anything it's cumulative. So basically, the last quiz we took was like studying for the final exam. I don't think I'd recommend Dr. Bailey for biochem because the notes she gives in class often do not match what the textbook says -- which isn't good when she tests on very detailed information. She uses her webpage a lot but isn't well-organized which leaves students confused a lot of the time. This class was extremely difficult, especially with the lab.

One thing up front: Chem 371 is a very difficult class. The lecture is packed with information, and the lab should be a 5 unit class by itself. Dr. Bailey knows her material. You will learn a lot of interesting informations. She will help you out if you show effort. The test grades are available almost immediately. The online quizzes are easy, but the midterms are tough. The reading material will supplement her instructions. Dr. B doesn't curve. She will grade you on your performance and improvements. This class will shape you and prepare you for the more difficult classes to come. Don't expect an easy ride! Stay in touch with her and you'll do fine.

I don't think its that Dr. Bailey is lame, its that Chem 124 is lame.

Dr. Bailey is a very nice lady and a great professor. Her knowledge of biology is quite impressive, considering she is a chemistry professor. At first I really didn't like her, but over the years I have come to really appreciate her and her professorship. I think she is a strong asset to the chemistry department and the college of science and math. I would highly recommend her for any upper division biochemistry class.

I was afriad to take Bailey again after having her for biochem but 377 was an extremely interesting class and Bailey seems to know a little bit about everything. Tests were pretty reasonable and we had to do a small webpage at the end. Overall, I'd recommend the class as an elective for science majors.

Im sorry for anyone who is reading all of these reviews by students who have taken CHEM 124 and 125. Christina Bailey is a wonderful professor who knows alot about chemistry. Granted, I did not have her for general chemistry, but I did take her for 377 and 477, and I learned ALOT in both. The only complaint I have is that the class didnt really match the class description, but regardless, they were both very interesting classes. I reccommend both of these classes as electives for any biochem major. I am currently interning at Stanford and I have found that both of these classes have come in great use. Im sorry that these fresshman engineers are having such a hard time with general chemistry.

Dr. Bailey is extremely well informed about the course material, but that is exactly what makes this class so difficult. Even if you have a good grasp of the concepts, she can kill your grade on the memorization. Be prepared to know minute details pulled from her online text (don't by the required text by the way, because I'm sure she never asked a question that didn't come from her own text in progress). That being said, she is a very fair grader. I received almost a full grade higher than my percentage. If you are a biochemist, you will probably have an advantage on the material, as it deals mostly with drug interactions with the body and vice-versa. There are 3 quizzes (with increasing point value), 2 midterms, several online quizzes (repeatable), and a webpage. Do NOT put the webpage off, because it is a pretty heafty project. Overall, Dr. Bailey presents the material clearly, but her tests are much more detailed than what gets covered in lecture. Be prepared for a tough quarter, but it is still one of the most interesting and informative classes you will take.

All the reviews for this professor seem to be skewed by complaining Chem 124 students. Tina Bailey is an amazing professor with a huge chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology knowledge base. In Chemistry of Drugs and Poisons, we were able to ask her specific questions about the most obscure drug treatments and 9 times out of 10 she could give an informative response and direct us to places where we could research more. She was friendly, approachable, and always willing to help. Also, when the class was struggling, she gave us extra credit opportunities on quizzes and exams. She has high expectations, but she should since she is teaching college-level chemistry courses.

She knows everything! She is such a nice lady and a wonderful teacher. She is very straight forward about what is going to on the test. If she says know this then you better know it. Don't complain about it being hard if you don't study. Drugs and poisons is a very cool course and all Chem students should take it as an elective. It is difficult, but very interesting. Dr. Bailey is awesome.

First of all, I think that Undergraduate Seminar is an awesome course and I wish that all majors here at Cal Poly would be required to take this course! I came out of this course feeling MUCH more confident about my public speeking abilities than I did when I took Speech Communications. Plus, this class requires for you to put together a formal resume that can be submitted for a summer internship or a job in the chem field. I have to admit, the first day of class I was terrified by the two seminars (one short 7-10 minutes and one long 15-20 minutes presentations, both with powerpoint slides) and teaching a lower-division chem lab that are required throughout the quarter. For the most part, everyone did fairly well on at least one of their presentations. This class can also help you find a senior project. I didn't even know about the list of Chem/Biochem Faculty Research Interests list (located in Dr. Bailey's office box) that lists most of the teachers in the Chem department and a description of their senior project research. Using this list, you are also required to interview 3 Chem professors (not due until the end of the quarter - but don't put it off and wait 'till the last week).Also, everyone in the class is required to fill out an evaluation form giving a grade for each person, both short and long seminars. Also, you get to self-evaluate. (Your grade on your presentation is reflected with the following ratio of yourself:students:Dr. Bailey = 1:1:2) I taught a Chem 312 lab (melting points) and I had the best time teaching those students. Even if you aren't interested in teaching, this experience turns out to be a good one. Dr. Bailey is the perfect teacher for this course not only because she loves teaching it, but because she provides constructive criticism on the presentations. Although Dr. Bailey grades fairly hard, she ends up "curving" in the end. Our class averages on presentations were C/C-, but the overall class average GPA ended up being around a '3.4'. Take Bailey for this course and have fun with it!

Taking this instructor is like being in a Twilight Zone episode. You just can
