She is very entertaining. The class environment was fun and easy to learn in. She really knows what she is teaching.

Professor Frantz is awesome. She taught very clearly and made sure that the entire class understood the material, even if it ment putting you on the spot a few times. The tests were based on knowing how to speak German, not weather or not you knew the 200 vocabulary words per chapter (which you did need to know for during class). Overall the class was extremely fun.

She was very funny, but it will take interest in this class to get an A. Effort is required, but she's a real good teacher who will help you learn it well. Very fun class.

I would recommend her. I had no German experience before this but it wasn't bad. If you had german before then it would be cake, otherwise its a bit of work. You are expected to go to every class but they are pretty fun.

Don't fool yourself into thinking you can learn a language without working on it (at least a little bit) every single day. It blew me away to see people in my class acting surprised that they had daily homework! It's a fast-paced class, so failing to do the work will result in being left behind. Such is the nature of a language class, and that is made very clear on the first day of class (hence my switch to cr/nc grading which I do not regret). Dr. Frantz is a good teacher with a fun personality. She is helpful outside class and takes a genuine interest in all students. Cultural information was tied in with the regular work, which was nice. And grading is fair.

If you haven't already taken german for like 5 years, don't take this class. She has no idea how to help the people in the class that have never had German, regardless of the fact that it is German 101! I worked my butt off and ended up with a C-. Everyone elase in the class that was new to German had the same. Everyone else had had german for 3+ years in the past and got better grades.

I disagree about the comment that Dr. Frantz can't convey German well enough to new learners. I have never taken German before, but maybe my having taken a different language before in some depth helped me out in this class. The class was fun, but you have to be prepared (only about 15-30 minutes out of class were necessary to learn the vocabulary and grammar). A lot of the work is done outside of class and if it isn't done beforehand, it can be a bit humiliating, since we're always put on the spot. She was really understanding with all of our concerns and really wanted to help us. I would definitely take a class from her again!

German was soo fun! you get to meet a lot of cool people and the language was interesting. the only downside is that it's a 2-hour lecture, so it can get boring sometimes. Dr. Frantz is a really nice lady, she jokes sometimes and overall she's a pretty good german professor. i would definitely recommend her/this class.

Dr. Frantz knows her German very well, although I don't think she's especially great at teaching German to students who don't know a word of it. The first day of class, I was so overwhelmed at how fast the pace was. Do the homework because you always go over it in class and if you don't know the answer, she'll make fun of you in German. 2 midterms and a final, plus workbook assignments. Keep up. If you don't constantly review vocabulary and grammar, you're definitely going to fall behind. Entertaining professor, though. Watch out for the outdated, corny grammar videos!

Dr. Frantz is very helpful, but she won't put up with anything. If you don't do your homework, she will yell at you in front of everyone. She is creative and has a dry sense of humor. Her tests are fairly hard, but not awful. DO THE LAB BOOK AND WAS VIDEOS!!! But where did that final come from???

Really quirky professor. She has this funny sense of humor and always does weird things in class. In class she gets everyone involved, and its actually a pretty fun class.

This class was based on turning in the workbook pages for each chapter and 3 tests. This was my first time taking German & she wasn't always clear on teaching a few things. I felt I could learn a foreign language easier because I am already fluent in another. Tests didn't seem too difficult. You don't have to learn very much vocab, which is a major disadvantage if you're actually taking this class to learn a language (and if you don't really want to learn a language, then I don't recommend this class at all). So to learn German, you have to do a bit extra studying to pay off in the long run to study what she doesn't require on the tests.

Dr. Franz is a no-nonsense instructor who will work with you as long as you are willing to do your part. We had lecture everyday, group work and discussion as in any beginning language class. We had WAS videos to watch and the workbook outside, as well as actually memorizing the vocab and new rules. DON'T WAIT to start learning new vocab and grammer rules. We also had a culture project (a 2-3 page paper written in English about German culture). The class was straight forward. Go to class everyday and spend at least 1-2 hours studying new concepts (the excercises are very short) and you will do well. DO THE WORKBOOK AND WAS!!! Dr. Franz is very approachable outside of class but will get upset if you aren't coming to class or doing the assigned homework.

Frantz was an excellent language teacher, and as a native speaker i found her able to relate to the students difficulties with the language well. I highly recommend her if you want to learn the language, not if you want an easy A

Frantz was such a witch! Although she may know the language as a native speaker, not everyone has had that much experience. She is extremely critical and intimidating while having very little synpathy for her students. Don't expect anything to come easily.

Dr. Frantz is one of the greatest teachers I have had ever. Granted, learning a foreign language (Deutsch = German) involves a lot of grammar and vocabulary, but she has this way of somehow making it interesting and fun. During her office hours she is willing to spend as much time as need be to make sure that her students understand the material. If you want to learn a language, take Dr. Frantz' German classes!

Frantz definitely has favorites, and you'll be able to tell, especially if you're in a smallish type class such as 121. The good news is that she likes most of her students, but she definitely treats you different if you don't make an honest attempt at the homework. Her style was different than what I was used to (I had four years of German in High school, with very little bookwork) but acceptible. I felt like I learned something, which is cool. I'm going to take German 122 here pretty soon. She's worth taking twice

Dr. Frantz is a very good teacher who expects the students to come to class prepared and accepts no excuses. The daily homework is not turned in or graded, but does affect the participation grade as you cannot answer the questions without having done the homework. There were two vocab quizzes, two midterms which coverd reading, vocab and especially grammer as well as had a short answer section. The final was really a chapter test like the previous tests and could be easily completed in an hour by most students. There were also two essays on a very open topics selected from material related to the chapters as well as an oral presentation. For the oral, the first part of it came from a section in the book, not covered and you had to do some research to find more info on your own. It had to be about 15 minutes long and include 3 questions to provoke discussion in the class. We also had the lab book with video and listening sections, but she cut the number of sections down to a reasonable amount. Her tests are NOT easy, but fairly difficult and require thought and study. Even the vocab quizzes were challenging. Attendance and participation is REQUIRED and IS part of the final grade. We had only 15 students and about 5 had been to Germany for three months or more and thus had an extensive vocabulary. She allowed those students to talk, but geared the class to those of us who had only taken the 101-103 series. We also had a German Music day during dead week and several students brought in their favorite German CD's. The class was stimulating, except when my limited vocabulary made discussion difficult.

I dislike this teacher soo much it is hard to even describe it. Unless you are a teachers pet, she absolutely dipises you and pick on you in class. She always told me to speak up more in clas but whenever i did so she ridiculed me and made me feel like a complete idiot. One day she yelled at a guy because he was smiling. Attendance is a MUST or she will have it out for you. All of her lectures cover is readings from the book and going over homework but she rarely covers the actual grammer for that chapter because she expects you to learn it at home. Her tests are not that bad but depending on how much she likes you depends on how hard she grades the test. She completely picks favorites and is unfair to over half on her students. Most of the class completely dislikes her and i would recommmend trying to avoid her for german... but unfortunately she is the main teacher. My suggestion.. MLL majors should just take french.. i wish i would have.

Dr. Frantz once again showed that she expects you to work, but is also willing to work with you. We had two tests, two vocab quizzes, two essays (one at home and one in class), an oral presentation and a final which was really a ch 10 test. We also had lab work which counted like the homework grade. Other homework included reading and working grammer exercises, reading short stories or poems from the text and answering comprehension questions. On one test there was a section we didn't get to in class and everyone bombed that section. She threw that section out of the test. This demonstrates her fairness. We also watched the movie Der Versprechung (The Promise) which our text had part of the script for. Overall the class was a positive learning experience and professor Frantz was flexible and allowed us to discuss current events as well as text material. I highly recommend this instructor to anyone with a true desire to learn German and who can take sarcastic humor well. It's a shame that Dr. Frantz isn't teaching Ger 233. She would be excellent, so TAKE HER WHILE YOU CAN!

I've had Dr. Frantz for 4 out of my 5 quarters of German here at Cal Poly. She is overwhelming at first. She picks favorites and attendance is really big to her. Some of her assignments are very tedious and our big projects (presentations to the class) weren't very effective learning tools. She also avoids answering questions sometimes. However, at the end of the day, Dr. Frantz is genuinely concerned about student difficulties and tries to negotiate with students about due dates, material covered, etc. She also has a very lighthearted side. There were only 7 students in the 122 class that I was in, and we always had a good time laughing and joking. She has lots to share, so get on her good side and you'll enjoy German.

I've had Frantz for several quarters at Cal Poly now, she is an awesome teacher. As people before me have said, you cannot take her classes lightly, for she will kick your ass. She loves class participation, and if you don't volunteer, she'll get an answer from you anyways. She is very fair on homework; however, if you let her know it was too much and atleast made a decent effort she will forgive you. She is very approachable in her office hours and very personable. One of my favorite professors at Cal Poly. 301 is a pretty easy class if you do the work, there is grammar as always in German, and an one page essay associated with every reading in the text, and several other essays on different topics. This class is mainly about writing and improving your German composition and grammar. We also watch several films in the class, and the final was an essay writen on the last film. Too bad this class is only offered once every 2 years.
