This review is for both pomology classes. Dr. Garner is hilarious. She is very sarcastic, but means well. She will go to great lengths to make sure you understand the material. Her class is by no means easy, but if you care, and put some effort into it and visit her during her office hours you can get an A. The only remark I have is that that her material requires lots of memorization. If you show up and take notes and study however, you should do fine.

*-HCS 120-* Dr. Garner is a really nice lady and a great teacher. Class consisted of 2 midterms, 1 final, 10 quizzes, writing assignment, and a lab. There was no text book required for the class, just handouts (15 total lectures) that Dr. Garner put on blackboard. The quizzes were randomly assigned, always on the previous lectures material. She sometimes hints when there is going to be one. 5 questions each. Not hard. The last 4 quizzes the class was given full credit (10/10) for just because we participated in the final exam review. The midterms are not hard, but you have to actually study. Make flashcards. They WILL help. Each midterm was about 50 questions each, give or take. The averages on the midterms were around 76% +/-. There was no homework assigned. The writing assignment was a "scientific writing assignment." It takes about 3-5 hours to write 1 paragraph. There has to be 3 different citations (article, book, website). Kind of annoying. The final wasn't all that hard either. There were about 75 questions. Same style as the midterms. Her tests are not tricky in any way. She wants you to get the right answers. The questions are very straight forward (see if you know the material or not type questions). The lab was just like any other lab. That was honestly the hardest part of the class. Making sure you were ready for the "once a week lab quiz" was a real pain. The lab had a midterm and final. They both consisted of identifying items (types of fertilizer, types of leaves for plants...etc.) The plant ID labs were the worst. Break down of grade: Midterms 100 points each Final 100 points Writing Assignment 100 points Lab 100 points Quizzes 10 points X 10 = 100 points Total : 600 points. Would highly recommend this class. I learned a lot!

This class was SO easy. All you have to do is go to class, take notes, and make flashcards for the tests. I got a\'s on both midterms and the final with minimal studying. I really liked Garner, she\'s really funny and a great teacher.

I really liked this professor. I felt that she taught the material well and made sure the class was fully prepared for the tests. She also answers questions in class which is very helpful. The hardest parts are the pop quizzes. Just go over your notes and you will do just fine. I would recommend taking any of her classes.

Just want to start by saying that this is the worst professor I have ever had. Her test are the worst. Sets you up for failure.

The class was AEPS 120 btw. She is an extremely uninteresting weird teacher who only uses lecture material (power point slides) and requires absurd amounts of memorization, the kind of memorization a textbook would benefit greatly especially if this isn’t your major. She also didn’t put some of my grades in two weeks into winter break and I was put on AP cause of it, I’m still waiting for that grade and it’s causing a lot of stress over my winter break, as I’m getting emails about how screwed I am when I know I have a c once she grades me fully. Don’t take unless absolutely necessary and even then... don’t take. I’m also 90% sure she’s a leprechaun

This is AEPS 120 for anyone who wants to know. I think Garner isn't the best but she isn't the worse. For one thing, I think if you want a B it is really easy. She has 10 quizzes for the grade but for like 7/10 it was based on whether you showed up for class and went to office hours at least once during the quarter. However, her midterms are bitches. The wording for them are terrible for some questions and I get the sense that she is deliberately trying to trick you. If you want to do well in this class, make sure you take notes very carefully. This class is based on all her lecture without having a textbook so all her tests are based on her lectures. If she emphasizes or repeats the information, chances are that she will test you on that. To get an A take really good notes, show up to class for every lecture, and write thorough answers for the lab.

Poly Ratings didn't have the correct course type for this class. It was actually HCS 120, but the closest they had was EHS, and as that is one of the majors that this course is required for, I opted to tag it that. Dr. Garner is hilarious, and an awesome teacher. We had some really rude, impatient, and obnoxious people in our class and, rather than get openly annoyed at them, she found ways to mock them without them really realizing. There was no required text, which was nice. There were lecture notes which she posted on blackboard, and if she hadn't posted them she brought copies for everyone. That happened alot, which for students is nice. There were two midterms and a final, all multiple choice, as well as a required field trip, and a paragraph writing assignment. Class was really informative, fun and to top it all off it was gravy.

I had Dr. Garner for hcs 120, they didn't have that options when rating so I put FRSC. She is willing to help you if you go to her office hours. She is not really good at explaning concepts. She goes on tangents when you ask her questions. It is best if you don't understand what she is taking about then find someone in the class that does. Her class is all on powerpoint lectures. She can not draw at all, and she will soon let you knwo that. If you don't go to class you will be completely lost. So find someone to get notes from. She has quizzes about once a week, sometimes twice. She is really good at giving quizzes on Fridays or "holidays" like Halloween. If you focus on it alot in class expect the quiz to be on that topic. She test are not that difficult but plan on studying for that class. Overall I liked her and her class but I did have to put in a lot of effort. There is a mandatory field trip, that part is sort of boring, and you have to write one paragraph. There are ten quizzes, two mid-terms, and one comprehensive final. Sometimes she will give "free quizzes" so I suggest going to class.

Dr. Garner is a good teacher. Her midterms and quizzes are ok not difficult as long as you do some studying. I would recommend her she is sometimes funny.

Dr. Garner is pretty sarcastic. For some people this may come across as rude but after you get to know her she's pretty awesome to be around. All you really need to do is be prepared for her random pop quizes and go to lecture because she includes things that aren't on the slides on the exams.

Garner's class is a ton of information, 100% memorization. This, for me, would be no problem, but the hard part about this class isn't that you have to memorize so much, but you MUST know every single small detail she mentioned during lecture. To be honest, it was just too much for one person to internalize. Now I'm not saying you don't learn a lot, you do and its all so helpful in the ag field. But at the end of the day, she is impractical in her grading and impractical in what she expects out of her students.

Garner is absolutely one of the most sarcastic and very blunt professors out here, which is fun if you're not at the end of it, and let me tell you, if she doesn't like you she'll definitely let you know. I tried so hard in both 132 and 133 and got Bs in both even though I got As on both the finals and she still gave me straight Bs because if she doesn't like you she skews anything she can like "participation" points or her fake quizzes to give the grade she thinks you deserve rather that what you actually got. Shes very biased with her students so my best advice is to get on her good side because you're going to need it it you want an A.

Dr. Garner is an amazing teacher. She truly cares about her students and their needs. She is extremely intelligent and has a true passion for plants. She manages to get you excited about plant's CAM cycles! She passes on her love for her job on to her students and it shows. She is a fast talker during lecture, but as long as you go to every class and take notes you will be fine. She doesn't test you on anything she doesn't go over in lecture.

Dr. Garner is my favorite teacher at Cal Poly. She is amazing!!! I've had her for a frsc and a hcs class and she gets me really excited about the curriculum. She is tiny and hilarious, I want to put her in my pocket and take her everywhere with me. In all seriousness though, take garner above any other teacher and take her as frequently as your curriculum will allow you, if for no other reason to pad your gpa (it's so easy). Attend class and pay attention to the lecture or you will miss material that will make a difference between an A and a B, and you wont catch her dry but totally witty jokes.

As you ALL can see for yourselves, No One has said Anything bad about this lady! I have now finished and she was my advisor and she never ever let me down or did me wrong. She will do her best for you! And unlike sooooooo many of our professors she is very sensitive to difference in the classroom if your black, red, white, yellow, gay, straight, organic, biodynamic or conservative you can feel comfortable in this professors class. She is wonderful and if you go to class and do your best to be a good student you can easily get an A or a B with her :)

Dr. Garner kicks ass! She is one the few teachers who would do anything for her students..set up office hours right before a midterm because she knows we are all screwed and haven't paid attention all quarter and now decide to cram right before a test. She can tell when we just don't have a clue.. and then laugh about it... makes me feel a little better for myself..ha

Everyone seems to really enjoy Dr. Garner's classes, so I guess I go against the grain here. I had her for 3 classes at Poly and didn't enjoy any of them! It was good information, but the tests suck! A blank blue book is so incredibly intimidating and her labs don't count for much of anything and that's the most practical part of the class. If you get any kind of test anxiety-DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES! A better option for crop phys would be through the Botany dept! She doesn't tell you how she grades until it is way too late and there's not enough time to finish midterms. Also, she seems to grade the guys a bit easier....so if you're a guy or even one of her favorite enterprise students-go for it, you'll get an A.

Nut production is an amazing class. I learned a lot of valuable information in this class and the field trip was very enjoyable. The only problem I have with Garner is her tests were very difficult to finish in the time given and her tests take forever to be graded. Overall, this class and professor are great! 3 midterms, 1 for each crop (walnuts, pistachios, and almonds). Highly recommend even if you already farm these crops.
