I really enjoyed Dr. Covey's lectures. We got to read mostly great literature and discuss them in depth. I actually read books differently now and feel able to "get" them on a deeper level. I had a busy quarter while I took his class however and could not devote as much time as I would have liked to the exams and essays. If I had to do it over again I would have gone to his office hours to get help with my own analysis of the works and to refine my writing skills a little bit more. If you like literature already you'll love Covey.

Covey was awesome. He REALLY knows and loves film and he will floor you with his knowledge...This guy is a film nerd!! He really loves hearing student's opinions about the films and is overall just a really nice guy. He is funny, too. The only downside is that he is a pretty tough essay grader so be ready to put forth. I got a B+. Take him, you'll love his class.

For a GWR class it was nothing. We watched movies every week. did 3 essays, one take home. and one vocab quiz. and 5 pop quizzes (they were only 2 questions on the reading) he was really funny and made the movies way more interesting than what i would have thought!!! TAKE HIM

The best non-major class I have ever taken! This professor is an authority on films and film study, but is down to earth and makes the class worthwhile and enjoyable for all. As long as you pay attention to lectures, read the text and attend all the "labs," you'll likely do very well.

I took the film noir class with Prof. Covey because…well, I thought it would be easy and a good way to knock out the GWR writing requirement at the same time. First of all, the class was extremely hard to get into. I took a priority and was still on the waiting list to get in. If you can get in, let me know what you’re in for. The class starts out relatively easy with a quiz on general film terms (an easy ‘A’ and worth 10% of your grade). Let me tell you this is the last easy A you will get in this class. I had to fight for every last point.
From the first day of class you watch a movie after class every week. Attendance is required (worth 5% of your grade). Some movies are fine, but there were a few that were absolutely horrible (I would have rather watched Gigli, they were that bad). Anyways, after three movies you write an essay on them and how they apply to what we learned in the class. The first essay is in class, second is take-home, and the last is in-class on finals week (each worth 25% of your grade). He grades EXTREMELY hard on them. He sees right through BS and will call you out in it. I never broke the ‘C’ barrier.
The last 10% of your grade comes from reading quizzes. God, these things sucked. From the reading he asks you about details from the reading such as what the heading of a particular part of the reading was. Out of the ten quizzes, I never got full credit on a single question and I did the reading.
Despite all of this, I actually liked Dr. Covey a lot as a teacher. He just moved from Cincinnati and is still adjusting to the California life. Appearance wise, he is exactly how you would picture a film geek. He is really knowledgeable about the class and even made me a little interested in film. He is funny and always pokes fun at himself. He will often go off on a tangent and then stop himself mid-sentence and say, “You guys aren’t interested in this.”, and get back on subject.
I just barely passed this class with a C*. So basically, don’t take this class unless you are really interested in film. It is not easy in anyway. If you are interested in the subject, by all means take him. You will learn a lot!
*You must pass the class with a C (not a C- or lower) to get GWR credit.

Even though I'm evaluating Covey on ENGL 372, where we studied Alfred Hitchcock films, I've also had him for 342 and 343 (Modern and Postmodern Lit). Film Noir and Literary Criticism are his specialties, but if you ever EVER get a chance to have Covey as a teacher, DO IT! I'm biased because 2 of the classes I took with him were just to have him as a professor, but in taking multiple classes just to have him as a professor, I've found I'm not the only one; there were at least 5 other people in my classes who were taking his class for the same reasons. It seems he has a reputation around campus, and it's well deserved. Covey really truly cares about the students, especially if you take the time to develop an interest in the subject and let yourself enjoy it -- instead of passing it off as another miserable GE. I've never gotten lower than an A in any of his classes, and I would consider it an easy A (and I'm NOT an english major, for the record). It seems that he chooses books that he think students will find interesting, and analyzes them just enough so that you get what the author (or auteur, for Hitchcock) is trying to say without being overly analytical, which is a big relief considering he's an english professor. Be open to the fact that he's incredibly quirky, and try to just enjoy the class -- it seems that that's how he wants his classes to be. If you can do that, I'm sure you'll just fall in love with him, like most other students who've had him have.
