This professor is super easy for chem, but teaches the subjects really well. Honestly, if you took high school chem this will be review for you. Just show up, do the labs, do the homework (there's not a ton) and take decent notes and you'll be fine. She even offered an extra credit quiz and lab for those who weren't do great.

Professor Carroll was extremely simple and easy. She has a bubbly personality and is extremely passionate about teaching chemistry. I have never taken an actual chemistry class before this and came in pretty nervous about it, but ended up getting an A in the class. She does not have a final, just larger quizzes which she calls Quizzams every two weeks. The quizzes are straight up and directly from the material she goes over. Labs are fun and you end up getting out at least 30 minutes to an hour early. I recommend taking her!

I was worried about taking chem because I hadn't taken a chem class since sophomore year of high school. Never once did I regret taking this class with Carroll though. She actually helped me enjoy chemistry, which is saying a lot. I'd highly recommend this professor to anyone wanting to learn and have fun! Pros: super easy to understand lectures were easy to follow along very fair and understanding grader no assigned homework problems approachable great in office hours very helpful in labs appropriately paced (she didn't laze through material) class frequently got out early (2 days a week for 3 hours each) Cons: not much tbh General class structure: There's no assigned homework like I mentioned, but there are problems that you can do if you feel like you need the help. There were quizzes every week which weren't bad difficulty wise. Two midterms and a common final. She curved the whole class at the end of the quarter.

I thought Dr. Carroll was great at presenting information clearly! The pace at the beginning of the quarter was painfully slow, and the end painfully quick, but none of the information was too much to handle. The assigned homework served as sufficient study material for the quizzes, and she was always open to answering questions. Her additional study sessions outside of class were immensely helpful as well; she gave a lot of tips on how to study and walked us through difficult problems. A few people I talked to apparently dislike how she tends to "talk down" to her students, but I interpreted it more as a tendency to make sure she isn't speeding through all the material. Overall I'd say she's definitely not the worst chem professor, but she's probably not the best.

I 100% would recommend taking this professor. If I could take her for 217 now, I would. I got a C because o chem is hard as shit and I got extremely overwhelmed in the first half of the quarter. Basically, the first half is weirdly hard (seems like some review stuff, yet I kept failing the quizzes), and the second half is a breeze, really just memorizing mechanisms which is easy enough. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK, even though it's never due, and while I would recommend going to office hours, but they're not ~entirely~ necessary, as Carroll is very easy to come to with questions directly after class, or else she'll answer anything mid-lecture. She is the SWEETEST lady, and VERY enthusiastic about O chem; even better, she truly knows her shit. I also had her for lab, and she was the best lab instructor. She'll post old exams before each midterm/final, which greatly helped me study, and even led some review sessions outside of class before the final. All in all, I studied my ASS off for this class (and I don't consider myself dumb), but genuinely thought I was going to fail (ended up with a C, when I only "needed" a C- though!), but it was NOT the professor's fault, and I definitely recommend her.

Dis bitch..... if you’ve seen Harry Potter than then the closest comparison I can make is to Dolores Umbridge, aka she is evil! She presents the easiest case scenarios in class and tests you on the hardest case scenarios on exams. Plus, she’s actually is clueless! She made us take the ACS exam which is cumulative from all 3 quarters of ochem and when I was studying for it she couldn’t answer 50% of my questions because she didn’t understand the organic Chem behind it! Bottom line is only take her if you want a crazy person who doesn’t know shit! Save yourselve, take Dr. Eagon instead, that man is great!

Dr. Carroll was the best lab instructor I have ever had at Cal Poly. I had taken 4 chem labs before taking Dr. Carroll's major lab for Ochem and I never understood anything that was going on. She lectures for about 10 minutes before each lab and makes the procedure for the labs a lot more understandable and she also explains why we were doing everything we were doing which is incredibly helpful. There are a couple of quizzes and notebook checks but she completely prepares you for them with her lectures. There are a lot of lab reports due because of the major lab being twice a week but they are all pretty easy and definitely manageable. She is also very willing to help during her office hours. I feel like she has definitely better prepared me for future labs. She's incredibly approachable and nice even after you ask her 400 questions a day. She was also the first teacher I had ever felt comfortable talking to in Office Hours. 10/10 would take a class with Dr. Carroll again.

Dr. Carroll does a really good job teaching clearly and making sure you understand everything before moving on. She does a review lecture before every midterm and before the final so that you know exactly what to expect on the test. For our class, she was very understanding of our needs and would go over areas that we needed more practice on. She also hands out a lot of worksheets to supplement the lecture and the book so you don\'t really need to read it. There is homework, but not a lot and she gives credit for completion. Overall, I enjoyed her class and I would definitely take her again.

She's very friendly and I'm sure means well, yet is quite a strict grader. Her exams are pretty tricky and she very rarely gives partial credit. I can recall a 5-8 point-worth question and me simply forgetting to add a hydrogen atom to the structure and her giving me a negative 8. It's like come on, give me at least a point or two. I was better off leaving it blank. A few questions like that can greatly diminish your overall grade on the exam. I would ask friends of mine who studied way less than I did getting C's & B's from other instructors while I struggled with D's & F's. She overly explains things too, to the point where you thought you had it, then she completely re-confused half the class by going into too great of detail. I would take anyone else but her. Besides, its only a support course for me. It has NOTHING to do with my major. its way too difficult of a class for non-chem majors as it is, why shoot yourself in the foot while your at it. Find an easier instructor.

LOVE HER! Sweet Sweet woman with a clear love for the subject. She is both interesting and understanding. The pace of her lecture is perfect, she is willing to slow down or go over concepts again if she notices the classes confusion. With that said her tests are haaaard. She once wrote the class average 65% on the board with a smiley face and said she was proud of the class. But hey,its Organic Chemistry what can you expect. TIPS TIPS TIPS: DO your homework, have a study buddy, make study guides, and notecards, and then do your homework again before the test, and check the solutions manual. TAKE CARROLL you won't regret it.....oh and ask her about the HEXANE HANDSHAKE one of her awesome students showed her.

Jennifer Carroll is the kindest professor I've ever had. Carroll is always available in office hours and is extremely helpful if you have questions. She presented the material very clearly. Sometimes she went a little quickly in class but she provides the framework for excellent notes. I highly suggest taking the SWS in conjunction with this course. It is the only reason that I did as well as I did. Tests were very fair. I think that her exams were "easier" than the other o-chem professor's exams. This is not to say that they are easy though. I got A's on the first two but completely failed the third one. Good news is that she has two grading options and you can drop one midterm and make the final worth twice as much. Take Carroll for o-chem if you get the chance!

she is an awesome teacher! she is willing to help you understand material you are unclear about anytime you approach her. and her lectures were very straight forward. her midterms were on the difficult side, but if you actually spend time doing hw problems and get help on concepts you dont understand you will do great! she wants you to know what you are doing and make sure you arent memorizing rxns and other concepts! love her class and her passion for chemistry!

She's Dr. Jekyll when you take her in 316, but turns into Mr. Hyde in 317. She's terrible at explaining concepts, races through material that is already complex and difficult as is, and condescending when you ask for clarification. Don't take her. Also, any extra credit she offers does absolutely nothing to help your grade, and if one random person aces the class, she doesn't curve

REASON WHY MY GRADE IS N/A? WELL SHE HASN'T POSTED THEM YET! GRADES ARE PAST DUE. REAL COOL. So Carroll, nice lady but when it comes to teaching Ochem, I suggest finding someone else. She goes at a nice pace and does cover everything in the allotted amount of time and also gives out helpful worksheets. As for midterms, she takes off a ridiculous amount of points for each question. When she says she gives partial credit, she doesn't. Also, she wasn't there for the second midterm and also the final....

Okay, so like the previous reviewer my grade is N/A because well she has yet to turn the grades in. Its been 2 weeks since the final and a week since grades were due yet she hasn't turned them in, which is torturous and unfair to the students. But on the side of her teaching abilities, I have experienced much better with all my previous gen chem instructors. She is average on most of the material and going to her office hours proved to be frivolous. I found myself relying heavily on the textbook in order for me to learn the information. I didn't find the tests to be too difficult but did find it annoying that her problems were weighed so heavily and partial credit was sparingly given. Overall she is average; leaning towards bad I have heard that for Chem 312 she is much better maybe since she doesn't teach 316 all that often she appeared inadequate.

Dr. Carroll is the best professor I have ever had. She is approachable, understanding and presents the material clearly and concisely. OChem is definitely a hard class and requires time and effort, but Dr. Carroll does a great job at teaching the material. There are quizzes every Monday with questions similar to the homework and her exams are extremely fair. She curves the class to a mid-C average (which is really nice compared to some other professors). I love her teaching style! Would absolutely take her again if I could! Do the homework and see her in office hours for extra help, and you will do great!

Carroll is very nice I have to agree, but the way she presents the material is not the best. She grades the class on 2 midterms, 6 quizzes, and 1 final, plus your lab grade. Compared to other Chem professors here at Poly she did not seem to be interested in her students. Since it is Ochem I was expecting to do a lot of work and I did. She makes you do homework questions that are medium level work, her examples in class are super easy, but when you get to the midterms or quizzes they are completely the opposite thing. There is other professors that are a little nicer and better at presenting the material, and telling you what they expect out of you.

It never seemed that Dr. Carroll was focused on the class. Her daughter called during lecture about once a week (there were 2 lectures a week), students has to correct her mistakes, and she got lost in her notes. Also, what made me lose a lot of respect and hope in this class was when we got back our second midterm and it was an average of 62%. Dr. Carroll said she was, "surprised it's that high." What?! She's a nice person, but I'm not sure what she's doing as a professor.

Do not take her class! Her philosophy is "lecture examples are easy, homework problems are a little harder, and then midterm questions are harder than those". Ummm, why don't you actually prepare us for the midterms, please? I know Ochem is a difficult class, but this was ridiculous. If you can teach ochem to yourself, then I guess you would be okay in her class. But for those of us who need to actually be taught, take a different teacher. Oh yeah, and she told us A WEEK BEFORE THE FINAL that the final would be a test from her and the ACS standardized ochem test (which covers ALL of ochem). Thanks for the heads up on that one, Dr. Carroll.

I had Dr. Carroll for chem 458 which was a really cool class. She was great at learning people\'s names right off the bat and was very approachable. The class was very laid back in the lab, which consisted only of purifying unknowns and running spectra. Since all spectroscopy work could be done outside of class time there were many occasions where it was not necessary to come to class. There were 3 papers to write on the identification of 4 unknowns, two homework assignments and two \'quizzes\' which lasted 3 hours each. Despite the quiz difficulty, the bulk of the grade was in the papers so it didn\'t matter if you didn\'t do so great on the quiz. A very enjoyable class and a great teacher, take it if you would like more experience in NMR spectroscopy.
