Barry is one righteous dude! He's easy to talk to and genuinely cares about students. The best part about Barry's class is you actually learn business skills. He does a great job making class fun and is always there to help. Taking Barry's class is as much fun as "drinking tequila on the beach" as he says it.

My roommate was in Geringer\'s 303 class and I felt sorry for him. We did nothing. Floyd knows nothing about International. I am really sorry I did not stay at Poly and take Geringer or someone else who really knows international. I guess this guy is a Furlough left-over who they can;t find another job for? Why did I pay good money to be stuck with him?

Barry is my favorite professor at Poly. He really understands the material and is really interested in his students\' success. I took international business this last spring quarter in Thailand and loved it! I learned a lot about international business. We had Thai students come into our class and learned about their culture and the business environment and how to be successful introducing new products into their country. The class was project based and we worked in teams. I would definitely recommend this class to all business students!

I was also on the Thai study program. I was intersted in learning about the materials not finding the best suits in town, the best bars and whatever else Floyd offer in lieu of having NO idea what he was talking about. I am taking 303 this quarter from Ramsey so that I can assure myself and my parents that I learned something. Yes, after spendind that kind of money, I am taking it again. Floyd is NOT international. Take a professor who has the training. I would ask the Management department as I wish I had asked before I bought in to such a joke of a course and unfortunately, a person who acts like he is schooled in IB.

I don\'t know who the person is that claims they went on the Thai study program, but I actually did. Floyd is a legit professor that does know his way around international business. He has been to some 50 countries and when he teaches you something, he relates the material to a story that he experienced first hand while working in Saudi Arabia, Germany, etc. Not only did he convey the material in way that we all could appreciate and understand, he made us go out and experience what he was teaching. Do not let the person below deter you from taking this professor because i can tell you that everyone I went with to thailand loved the guy and would take him again in a heartbeat. With that said, his test are somewhat tricky and he downplays the extent of what you need to know. Over study and pay attention in class.

Barry is a really good teacher. He keeps a lively classroom atmosphere and really tries to make a boring (at least for some students) subject more fun. He tells jokes and sometimes brings candy and doughnuts to class. Some of the assignments are easy and some are extremley hard but he is always willing to help, he even gives you his home phone number and AIM screen name if you have questions. He has a helpful class website. To do well in this class you need to really study the study guides and maybe read a little from the book (at least know the major concepts and key terms). Also do well on your assignments, but this is not too hard because he grades them pretty easy as long as you meet minimum requirements. Also come to class because he does take attendance. There are easier teachers out there but Barry really teaches you, so I would recommend him.

Barry Floyd is great. He gives you his screen name and home number so you can get ahold of him all the time with questions, and is very dedicated to helping students learn. He is also pretty flexible and laid back with due dates. He is more interested in you learning the material of the course and being able to apply it in a practical way than knowing all of the "nitty gritty". One thing to be careful of is that he isn't always 100% clear on instructions and often changes them on a regular basis (they're always posted on his website rather than handed out, and the page is updated a lot). The good thing is that despite these changes he's not a nazi about following them precisely and if you find that some change he made is too hard or unfair, just go talk to him and he'll totally work with you. I would definitely take another class with this guy (too bad I'm not an MIS concentration!). So yeah, take him, he's a cool guy.

Barry's class is going to be more work than most other 391 classes but its worth it. I learned so much about computers this past quarter, it was great. Barry is great. Like was said before, you'll do more work in his class, but you'l come out of it with a lot better knowledge of MIS and have a few advantages over other 391 students. He likes to joke around and keep the atomosphere light for the subject, is really fair at grading and is almost always available, be it online or in office hours (I even reached him around 1 AM on AIM, so yeah), and yes, he did bring in donuts for us during dead week. So if you don't mind the extra work here and there, definitely take Barry for 391 or any other MIS course, I know I will

Most definitely one of the greatest professors you can take while you're here at Cal Poly. He really cares about you, and is willing to put in those extra hours to make sure you succeed. If you read the other comments below, they're absolutely right, he gives you many ways to get a hold of him, and will even come out Sunday nights before midterms to help you study and review. Aside from just the 391 class he teaches every now and then, he is a very good guy to get to know, especially if you're and IS(formerly known as MIS) student in the OCOB. He's got a lot of connections in industry, and goes out of his way to help you find internships/jobs and will help get you on projects while you're here so that you stand out as a sutdent. Overall a great professor, and probably one of the few professors you'll actually have fun getting to know.

Barry is what every bit as wonderful as all the other students before me have described, and more. I took this class as a 5 week course in the summer, and thought it would be a piece of cake. Wrong. It was a TON of work, not necessarily hard, just a lot of work. Barry isn't the easiest teacher you could take to pass this requirement, especially if you hate computers, but I really enjoyed the class. He is concerned with his students actually taking useful skills away from that class that they can use to boost their competitive advantage in the workplace. HTML, Quickbooks, and more than you'll ever want to know about Access and Excel are covered in this course, along with a little optional SQL. Learn it all, it's all useful to at least know what it is. Barry is extremely dedicated to his students, and a really nice guy. If you aren't really in school to learn, take an easy teacher. If you want to learn, take Barry. He's great. (It's not THAT hard.) Oh yea...he likes chocolate ALOT...he'll bring his classes some, and maybe donuts, each qtr.

Barry is awesome...he is like a student, but in an old guys body. He understood that we have other classes and would let us off early sometimes. If you pay attention in class when he is showing you how to work with html, access, quickbooks, and excel you will do fine. The HW is easy, the tests can be a little difficult because the stuff he puts on there are from his lectures and the book and he never really completes all his lectures or tells you to read the book. Definitely take 391 with Barry, you won't regret it.

Mr. Floyd is by far the best teacher I have had at Poly so far. He grades very fairly, dropping the lowest of 3 test scores and grades hw easy. I recommend taking Floyd for this, or any other MIS class.

This class isn't too bad provided you come every day and stay on top of the projects. Make sure you pick a good partner to work on projects with or you will be doing way too much work. Barry knows his stuff and presents is pretty well. It can seem a little overwhelming during the lectures but he gives a great review sheet for what will be on tests. In order to get a good grade on the test you must do this review sheet and go to one of the review sessions outside of class. If you do these things you should be able to get a B.

Barry is the man! He's absolutely hilarious! He is a great person and knows what he is talking about when he teaches. He gives reviews for the three tests (and the final was just another test). If you know the reviews, you should do fine. Knowing the reviews can be alot of work, so don't procrastinate with the reading. If you really want to do well in this class, you can if you study hard. The projects in class are fun, and relatively easy if you pay attention in class. The only downfall of Barry is that his notes he writes on the whiteboard in class are veryyy confusing and hard to understand. But if you talk to him about it, he will always be willing to help. Barry is an EXCELLENT teacher. He reminds me of my teachers that I had in high school since they teach you SOOOOO much and they genuinely care about your learning experience in that particular subject. I almost felt the need to switch my concentration to MIS because of this guy! Fear not, I didn't but he does have a passion for MIS and what you learn is definitely valuable towards your future endeavors. Technology is very important and I had no idea whatsoever that it was fun to learn! I always thought computer programs were a drag, but take Barry and you will learn a whole crapload of stuff. Not only that, he is HILARIOUS!!! If you're looking for a class to sleep through or not go to, DO NOT TAKE HIM. I felt overloaded with work the whole quarter because the projects are pretty intensive (there are 3) and the tests are difficult! I can't stress the importance of attending class AND PAYING CLOSE CLOSE ATTENTION. The tests are not only from the book, but from lecture, lab, and what you did on your projects. PS. good teacher, shitty subject IS. this guy is understandable and funny as hell. I fucked up on some of my midterms and he threw some points my way. He has 3 midterms(written and lab), and 3 projects. The projects were shitty. The access project was the most tedious project taking me almost 20 hours to do. This guy will give you a B if you show him that you give a shit. Barry Floyd is not only a horrible teacher, but also a compulsive liar. He promised on every single class for 3 weeks that he would have our project/test/homework grades posted and they still arent up, even though we just took the final 2 days ago. He also lied about what material would be on the final exam. When you ask him a question, he'll smile, say "figure it out" and walk away. I have no idea why his ratings are so hi...his class is way too much work, he doesnt give enough direction, and, all in all, hes a horrible teacher

I was actually looking forward to having Floyd as a professor because of all the good polyratings he's had, but I honestly have no idea why he's rated so highly after taking him. The class was hard to follow for a fairly easy subject. He was probably the most disorganized professor I've ever had at poly and he's information systems! He was lazy and hardly put any effort into our class at all. He changed his project requirements last minute and never gave clear instruction. Our last test was 95% from online tutorials on subjects we never covered in class; he was too lazy to even write a test! Why would I want to put any effort into such a disorganized, half-assed professor's class? Avoid Floyd if you can. Oh and I'd put my grade up but I haven't gotten it yet even though its been almost 2 weeks since the last test.

Barry definitely knows his stuff and provides so many tutorials of him demonstrating everything that you need to know becuase there simply isn't enough lecture time. We were assigned about 3 little homework assignments and three large projects. Be prepared for the Access project, my partner and I put in well over 20 hours. We did it in 3 days, 2 of them were days in the library computer lab. I gave him a low score becuase of the following: Don't expect to ever know what your grade is in this course. He didn't grade our second project or our second midterm before we took our final midterm, so I had no idea what my standing was. Additionally, he 'lost' our lab part of the third midterm so everyone just got 100%, which is cool in a way but at the same time, what was the point of studying then? He is simply very unorganized! In fact, I don't remember ever doing an evalutation in his class, he must be tenured, or he lost them as well. However, if you have any questions, he answers emails fairly quickly and at all hours. I would take him again for this course, but I wish I knew these things before hand.

This class is very hands-on. He spends the majority of the class demonstrating how to work a certain program/software, so you can go home and start your projects asap. Three projects in 10 weeks is a lot, and you usually only get 2 weeks to do each because he spends a week demonstrating and lecturing about information systems vocabulary and concepts. This class is fairly challenging because he asks the trickiest questions on the written exam, but lab exams tend to be pretty straightforward. He is a funny teacher, so you will not be bored during class. He cares about his students. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN! but he might be reserved for the freshmen green light program. Did not really enjoy this class. There are 3 projects in the class and 3 exams. The exams are worth a lot more than the projects and the lab exams. The first project was very pointless in my opinion but the exam wasn't too bad. The second exam was using Access and the project was very difficult and in my opinion so was the exam. The averages were about the same on the first two exams. The last project was using Excel and he did not explain Excel very well. A lot of people struggled through the project but the lab exam and the multiple choice were fair. He tends to curve scores randomly and then not curve them when you think he should so it is very confusing. I would recommend taking him, especially if considering doing IS as a concentration.

Barry was pretty good overall. He moves really fast in the 393 class so if you fall behind early it's hard to catch up. He also had a tendency to email assignments the day before he wanted them due. Other than that his tests are pretty fair and the project is fair, just make sure you are comfortable with SQL. Also if you get SQL certified he will raise your grade, even after the quarter is over.

I have mixed feelings about Floyd. He goes beyond what most other teachers do to help students. Hes lenient on grading, he gives everyone an SQL book which he puts together himself, which would otherwise be very expensive. However, during class lectures he tends to ramble and interrupt himself constantly. His directions for the project are very half-assed and vague, he doesn't explain things that need explanation and just tells you to contact him on skype, which is sort of an inconvenience that could be avoided if he took the time to give better directions. He is one of the better teachers in the IS dept, but he can be frustrating.

There's lots that can be said about Barry and this class. On one hand, Barry is very busy with his own consulting work so he can be very flustered and unorganized with the material. It's not that he's a bad teacher, quite the opposite, he just seems scatterbrained a great deal of the time. But Barry is also one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. He will go very far out of his way to help you understand the material (think skyping you at 3 am), and truly enjoys mentoring students. If you are looking for an internship or job he is THE professor to get to know. His class, and particularly the final project are incredibly applicable to industry work that IS concentrations will do and was incredibly useful. I can say I truly learned a lot, mainly about SQL. This is one of those classes where if you go out of your way to ask questions and actually do the work, you'll do fine.

Barry is one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. He really goes out of his way to help, encourage and work with you. Whether it be for homework or a project Barry wants to see you succeed. He is a little unorganized due to the fact that he usually spreads himself so thin between teaching, student projects and his own projects (which he travels a lot for). He does kind of just give you an assignment and then expects you to just go do it with no help even though you are standing there like" wtf" however now that I look back I am glad he has taught this way because it has made me learn such an incredible amount about the subject and probably more than I ever have in most classes. He is definitely the one to take if you want to be successful in your career. This is the first class I have had with Professor Floyd. He has such a good reputation so I was shocked by how terrible of a professor he was. I don't think he is inherently this bad of a professor, but I think he has way too much stuff on his plate currently to dedicate the time to even kind of teaching the material well. The class consists of homework, a final project, and three midterms. He does not grade any of your assignments and his midterms are far from what he tells you they will be like. He doesn't understand how to properly teach the material and fails to let you know what you need to do to succeed in his class. I was able to get an A because I taught myself everything by watching people on youtube who barely knew how to speak English, but were still lightyears better than Professor Floyd's lectures. You don't go from having this good of a reputation to being such a failure as a professor. I truly think Professor Floyd is a good professor, but unless he is able to get his life outside of being a professor together, I would not recommend taking him.

Barry's a bad teacher but HANDS DOWN my favorite professor at Poly. He cares about his students and genuinely wants the best for us. At least once a week he sends us emails from recruiters for internship/job opportunities. At office hours he'll gladly help you with your issues. He's incredibly smart, enthusiastic, funny, and understanding. I've talked to him about future classes, career paths, senior projects, etc. And he loves tequila. Unfortunately he has way too much shit to do. Our HUGE class project has vague directions and hasn't been graded, our homework and labs haven't been looked at, and other assignments have zero feedback. His lectures can be found in the textbook that he gives us for $15 (instead of the original $200-something price). But his lectures are WAY too fast and unclear. It's also hard to ask questions at the pace he speeds through. His potential is like a SpaceX rocket, his current performance is like Mentos + Coke.

You know when you were a kid and you did something wrong and your mom looked at you and said she wasn't mad but she was disappointed? That's pretty much how it is taking Barry's class. You can't be mad at him because he clearly cares and tries. You're just disappointed that he sucks so much. He doesn't grade anything besides the midterms you take, and his directions for things are practically non existent. He expects so much yet offers so little. You're basically on your own in his class. Even though he's a good person he just really, really, really sucks as a professor right now.

Honestly, I think Barry is a rare teacher. He cares about his students and replies to emails pretty quickly and at odd hours, even DURING Thanksgiving Break. Wow. What a great guy. I learned a lot about SQL from him, and if he didn't make this class tough and somewhat of a hands on approach outside of class; then I wouldn't have learned so much. If you don't understand something, then don't hesitate to ask; don't be afraid okay. Barry is always readily available to his students and you can talk to him beyond just coursework. For example, Barry has great philosophies and I even can quote one of the great sayings he has spoken to me during office hours, "Don't just do the bare minimum to skim by." And also when I felt conflict about losing my individuality due to the ideals and molds of the professional business world; Barry told me I had nothing to worry about and that I could still be who I am as long as I can separate my work life from my social life; he even gave me examples of people he knew. Basically, Barry = Great Person.

Barry is awesome! He's knowledgable and is very helpful when answering questions. He is dedicated and wants his students to succeed. His office hours are great because he is so approachable and will help with any question. The 393 end of the quarter project is difficult but he works with his students to make sure they have all the tools they need to do a good job. If you're an IS concentration, make sure to get on Barry's good side, it isn't hard!

Barry is a good teacher and I recommend taking him. After you pass this class, you must know a decent amount about SQL. But you will suffer a lot for the project so please, please, please start it at least 2 week earlier or you will cry blood. His lectures are not very easy to follow unless you have read the materials before hand. However, when you need, the textbooks and powerpoint are great resource to reread and apply for the project. He is always available for email and office hour, caring and always want to find us (IS students) job, don't hesitate to come to him and ask for help. He answered a lot of my email during the Thanksgiving and has been super supportive to me as it has been a rough quarter and I am starting to find jobs. He kept in touch with alumni and wants to give us the connection as well. He will inform you all the classes available the following quarter and give incredible helpful advice on lot of stuff. His performance is not great yet the results are amazing. His class 391 inspired me to make decision to change the concentration right away and I am happy with IS <3

Barry is the GOAT, enough said. Probably the best professor at OCOB along with Jimbo McDowell, Maber, and Burleson. Sure loves his tequila too.

Barry genuinely wants you to learn the material, so he will help you out. Although the final project is not easy, it's worth the time put in.

The ONLY Teacher that matters. Barry is awesome! If you have an opportunity to take a class with this guy, take it! If you get a chance just to speak with this guy, do it. ( Especially if you are an MIS major ). The job market was looking pretty pathetic when I graduated and if it wasn't for his help I wouldn't have had a job after commencement. He is so good, that I actually left school in the middle of my final quarter to start my job and he helped coordinate with other professors, so that I could finish my last couple of classes from afar. Barry is awesome!!!!! Thanks for all of your help Dr. Floyd....

I get it, 464 is a senior project class, and is 100% self-led by the student. But it is now going into the 4th week after graduation and I have now been denied my diploma because of this guy's inability to submit my grade change. He doesn't respond to contact attempts, and always seems to be out of the country. Not only does his lack of caring about the situation bother me, so does the fact that I am now stuck with no official degree to apply to jobs with. The job market is tough as it is, so do yourself a favor and find a more thoughtful, and less negligent professor to mentor you through your senior project. #ThanksForNothingFloyd

I think I got Barry on an off quarter. I knew him before I took this class and he seemed really awesome. Unfortunately this class was way less than i expected. I did learn a lot, but not thanks to his teaching. All you do in this class is create a business plan and learn quickbooks all on your own. We basically taught each other in this class and he made a test on our presentations. It just seemed like he was very distracted this quarter and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he's usually more active in his class and his students success. To me it just felt like he didn't care much, but maybe that's just because it's a 400 level class. I wouldn't take this class though unless you plan to someday start your own business because that's all it's good for.

I am in shock by all the positive results for Barry. He sat in class doing absolutely nothing everyday we met (if he wasn't hanging out in his office). We were provided with Quickbooks and expected to learn it completely on our own and create a business plan based on a very poor outline of requirements. The test he created on what he "taught" us was an absolute joke. I had no idea of any of the information, but thanks to the curve because no one knew anything, ended up with about a C. But, alas, this class is cake to Ace because he passes out extra credit like candy on Halloween. I will account my A in this class to attending various IS club meetings. I am just amazed at his ability to do absolutely NO teaching yet still be employed at this school as a professor. Thank you Barry for not enhancing my education and not giving a crap about your students. I took this class to decide if the IS concentration was right for me, however you and 'Professor' Griggs proved that the IS department needs help in many ways.

Barry is a very intelligent teacher who helps to clarify the material in students' minds. He actually cares that you learn the subject material. He showed up at the computer lab at 11pm on a sunday night the day before a big project was due. how many instructors do you that would do that? 1st midtem was straight forward, second midterm was a little tricky. He mostly tests on concepts, not specifics.

Barry Floyd was one of my favorite professors. He genuinely cares about how much you are learning. He makes sure that the stuff he is teaching is current and applicable to the business marketplace. He was active in bringing in companies to the ISA meetings and helps students get jobs with these companies. I hope everyone in MIS gets a chance to take at least one course with him!

Great Teacher. Teaches you to be prepared for the real world. Don't be late or you will have to bring candy to the class. If you have a chance to take him, Do it. You won't regret it.

Bus 498: You are screwed if you don't have tons of free time. The whole class is about SQL and PLSQL. If your not great at it, then your work load will be that of 2 to 3 classes worth for this single class. Start everything early! He may have revised this course a little because he asked us at the end what we thought he should change. If not, then the final project will make you cry at times. Hang in there.

Professor Floyd is easily the best professor in the IS department. Barry truly cares about his students' education and wants us to be successful. Barry is super helpful and will always take the time to help you out in office hours. You will actually learn useful skills in his classes that will prepare you for the real world. I HIGHLY recommend Floyd and it would be in your best interest to take his classes whenever you can. Too bad other IS professors aren't half as competent as Professor Floyd...

This was his Business Modeling and Analysis with Excel class. Frankly, it's not very hard if you can keep up with the material. He goes pretty quickly. He covers all HW in class the next day so it's never graded but we get instant feedback. Basically, if you do all or most of it you'll get 100% HW. The midterms were all decently easy and there were no curveballs. You either know excel or don't so this class isn't very hard BUT IT'S VERY USEFUL FOR THE REAL WORLD. And Barry is standard Barry
