This man should be fired from Cal Poly, he must be a tenure teacher to be half-assing the class the way that he does. Sure his lectures are informative, but more in a Bill Nye the Science guy kind of way. You might be interested in what hes saying but round comes test day and BAM 1. He didnt review for the test. 2. He didnt recognize the students PROBLEMS with the test/hw 3. Didnt do much to prepare us in the first place. Granted he will go over the theories in a very insightful way, but thats not whats passed me in this class, it was the fact that i sat down and read everything over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...e^100000000000000000000000

I was so glad this class finally finished. Man, i never spent so much time on one subject in my life. I only took this class b/c it was the only one available at the time and it was a support course. Fleishon is an okay guy but makes you feel like an ass when you ask him for help. I knew nothing about physics early on in the class but i did learn a ton from many hours of failed attempts of doing homework that wasn't worth my time. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO. It is a living hell and you'll regret it. I spent over 20 hours each week trying to complete each hw assignment properly. It really sucked to waste that much time on such a small part of my grade. Overall this class was my worst nightmare.

Fleishon appeared to be a good professor the first week of class. I understood what he was talking about (even if it was just adding vectors) Then we moved on. He would spend the entire class period arguing with students as to why he was right and they were wrong, when the entire class KNEW he was wrong. He may know advanced physics information but has no concept of ANYTHING else, He straight up told me that factoring out a variable was incorrect algebra and changed the equation. Thanks I have known how to factor since 5th grade. He would promise that the newest section wouldn't be on the midterm, then 1 of the 4 problems (25%) was from the section he specifically said wouldn't be on there. And he is NEVER wrong, he will waste the entire lecture proving that, and wasting time instead of teaching us what we need to know. Most physics classes spent a few days at least on rigid bodies, we spent 15 minutes, on one example and guidelines then took a quiz on it... He assigns homework before he lectures on it and then grades it for correctness. He called people in class dumb, or told them they would understand if they paid attn. By far the worst teacher i have had at Poly. Not only is he a bad professor he is an arrogant asshole as well.

EXPECT TO STAY THE FULL THREE HOURS...you have to print out the worksheets and the activities...the nice thing is you don't have to buy the lab manual...he continues lecture in his lab...and sometimes lab can run over...so don't take his lab if class right after because you will have to run to the next class...it helps though with understanding the concepts and expect the activitie to be on the quizzes and midterms in lecture...luckily there are no quizzes or tests in lab...overall he is a pretty good professor...

Fleishon's lecture's aren't very engaging. Once in awhile he will present some interesting information, but it usually doesn't show up on quizzes or exams. Study for the quizzes, it's a good way to get points, they aren't very hard. His exams, though, can be tough. Make sure you read the book and are familiar with the labs. He will use material not gone over in class, and expect you to understand the labs for the exams. Your lab grade does matter to him somewhat, when determining your final grade.

Wow. Great teacher. I've taken two years of physics in high school and a semester in community college and Neil is hands-down the best physics teacher I've ever had. He explains complicated subject matter in a way that's easy to understand and he doesn't make things more complex than they need to be. When grading quizzes and tests, he'll give you as many points as possible and his grading scale is very forgiving (100-85 = A, 85-70 = B, ect). Take him if you can. I can't recommend him enough.

Dr. Fleishon was a great prof. I really enjoyed his lectures because they were interesting and I felt that they helped with the homework problems and prepared me for his exams. I don't know why some people bash him, because this guy actually teaches. You will definitely learn each lecture (if you go!) and his demonstrations go well with what he's talking about, so you get a visual presentation of what's going on. He is also helpful in office hours and he knows how to explain things to students. He has a set curve (85 to get an A, 70 to get a B and so on) and his tests are fair. I would recommend taking this guy.

For the love of christ, somebody please hit this man with your car. I have no idea where to start with Fleishon, maybe with the fact that he the worst teacher I have ever had in my. If you ask him a question, he will not know the answer, guaranteed, and then he will make you feel like an idiot to make himself feel better. His tests are vague and impossible to complete. While reviewing for our final, he stated two different subjects that would NOT be on the test, and low and behold, they ended up being on the final. I have never been wanted to reallllllly hurt somebody in my life, but just give me the chance and this man will be missing both arms and legs, and I will personally rip his hair out. Fleishon will make you feel like he cares about his student's understanding of the material. He is extremely paranoid of his students being out to get him (who knows why?) and plots anti-cheating schemes for his ridiculously difficult tests. Fleishon has an old case of Napolean's Disease, or small man's syndrome. He tries to overcompensate for his lack of manhood and take it out on Cal Poly students because he knows that we will have more success in our lives than he will ever reach. I withdrew from the course because I refuse to learn from a professor that I do not respct in any regard. I will never register for a class with him again...Lesson learned shithead.

This guy is the worst teacher I have ever had. I was unfortunate enough to have him for lecture and lab. He was totally unprepared in lecture and lab. He couldn't answer any questions on material not covered in the lab manual and would get defensive or hostile if you want clarification on his incoherent explanations of concepts he doesn't understand. The labs would always go over the allotted time because he would interrupt the experiment to ask us all stupid questions that have nothing to do with anything. If you want to do well on lab reports, don't worry about content, deductions are made for punctuation, nomenclature, and other things that could be graded by a 3rd grader. He doesn't understand anything in the lab report so make sure you put in the buzz words, he just checks them off a list. Don't take this teacher if you are at all interested in learning the material, or you have the balls to slap that dumb ass smirk off his face.

Neil knows his physics, talks clearly, but makes everything about the course much more difficult than it needs to be. He spends the entire lecture deriving formulas rather than doing examples. For a beginner level physics class, it's completely unnecessary when there's so much material we have to cover within 11 weeks. The worst part about this course, however, is the fact that we had to follow a professional standardized format for every quiz/test formula and lab write-up as if we were presenting the material to a scientist. I got the answers to the problems correct with units, but I lost so many points because I forgot to include my units WITHIN THE CALCULATIONS. It's extremely distracting to have to worry about every single pencil stroke because he's such a stickler about his formatting. I assume he realizes that he does this to his students because his grading scale shows 85-100 as an A, 70-85 as a B, and 55-70 as a C, which is nice. Overall, neil expects perfection from an introductory physics course; If this was a Junior/Senior level course than I would have no problem with this class-style. I don't recommend him.

I was definitely nervous after reading the previous reviews, but pleasantly surprised. I guess the people only leave reviews when they have either a really bad experience, or a great experience, nothing in between. The material & pace was very reasonable, and as the previous reviewer said, no curve but a 15 point range per grade (85%+ = A, 70-84 = B, etc.). Lectures synced up well with the assigned reading, so if anything was confusing in lecture, it was easy to find the relevant section in the text. He assigned about a dozen homework problems each week, then sent out a copy of the solutions over the weekend. Homework was not collected, but weekly homework quizzes were a single problem DIRECTLY from the homework, just with different numbers (pretty easy if you do the homework and check the solutions). He expects you to show all your work, and you will lose points if you don't, but he also gives plenty of partial credit as long as you show your work. No cheat sheet allowed for quizzes & exams, but all equations are provided. I'd suggest working homework problems using his equation sheet, rather than the book's equations, since those are all you'll have on the exams, and some of them look a bit different than the ones in the book.

He confuses the hell out of people during his recitation then is of little to no help during the lab itself. Half the time I'm not really sure he even knows what we're supposed to be doing. I'm a physics major and even though my grade didn't necessarily reflect my knowledge I thought Dr. Fleishon really knew his stuff. I mean c'mon he received a B.S. at M.I.T. and a doctorate at Berkeley. He knew Physics inside and out. He gave about 5-7 quizzes based on the homework, but his tests seem to drift off into realms of Physics we hadn't covered. His final was however, redeeming. If you can take the time to really read over the book and understand the process of equation solving thoroughly you'll do great, but don't be turned away becuase of hard work, you can learn alot form this guy. Fleishon wasnt too bad. AT first I hated him but towards the end I really started to like him. He is a tough grader, but he really knows his physics. He doesnt collect homework and he does one quiz a week with one problem on it directly from the homework. THe midterm questions are also comparible to the homework, so If you just keep up with that and dont get lazy then you will do fine. He tries to learn the names of the students who participates because he does give participation points, so dont be afraid to ask something. His labs are kind of boring, but he is real helpful in them.. He also doesnt curve which sucks, but he grades on a 15 point grading scale which really helps. Overall I would take him again.

Fleishon was a really good professor. He explained things very clearly and worked problems out step by step. He was always at his office hours ready to help anyone who came. Even when you have a lot of problems you need help on he will go through all of them. You have a quiz once a week. Homework is not required, but I would do it because one of the problems on the quiz is directly from the homework. His midterms are difficult and you have to study hard to do good on them. The problems on them are like none you've seen. I was expecting a ridiculous final, but it wasn't that hard at all. Overall he is very fair and gives a lot of partial credit. This, of course, is an evaluation for his 131 LAB CLASS. Professor Fleshion really REALLY needs work during the lab. He puts the class to sleep and doesn't seem to be a bit energized. He is a smart teacher though but VERY tedious on the labs because it's very difficult to get an S+ that could boost up your grade in your 131 Lecture class. Although his evaluations are great, he's just an okay as a lab eacher but you will RARELY get out of class at least 30 minutes early. Try to take a teacher that will get you out of there and FAST.

I bear Fleishon no ill will...the guy obviously knows his Physics and clearly is willing, if not necessarily able, to convey it. I say unable because he will make simple textbook problems confusing as hell, and gloss over the more difficult ones. It's true, I had him for 131 Lab, and he was not very effective in that (now defunct) capacity. We never once got out before the three hours were up, he loves to talk and that often meant rushing through (admittedly meaningless) experiments. The first hour consists of a problem or two which are suggested or randomly picked from the book or online problems. The second hour involved an excruciating foray into the minutiae of whatever godforsaken task we had to do. Then the weekly lecture on significant figures and report form, which lasts 15-30 minutes. At last, 30 minutes of not having to feel my spinal column fuse together. Do yourself a favor. If Fleishon is taking a lab section, take it with somebody else, if you can. You will not come out with even a modicum of Physics knowledge, only a keen pain in the backside and a headache, and maybe a big red spot on your forehead from sleeping on the desk. Highly disrecommended.

Fleishon was an odd guy, but he knew what he was talking about. The biggest problem was that he was very picky about making sure that we drew pictures and symbols and really didn\'t care if we got the right answer most of the time. Once you figure out what he\'s looking for, it\'s almost impossible to NOT get partial credit for every problem. He gave a short reading quiz each lecture and an additional homework quiz once a week. Bottom line, if you\'re a visual person who likes drawing- take him. If you only care about crunching numbers- don\'t!

His midterms were pretty hard and his final was ridiculous, but the great thing about his class is that he has a set curve, so 55% is a C, 70% is a B, 85% is an A. Easy class to pass. Yes, he may not be a great professor, and he keeps you the ENTIRE time in lab with no exception, but he presents the information clearly. I think the reason why Fleishon gets a bad rep is because mostly freshmen take his class. They don't understand that he's not here to be your friend, and he won't care about your grade if you come in to his office hours for the first time, right before the final. Taking this class as a sophomore, I did all the homework assigned, sat in the front row every class, and went to his office hours once a week. I'm not a genius, but I worked hard to earn a solid B. It seemed like the people in my class were mostly freshmen, didn't do their homework until the night of each test. Fleishon is a great teacher, he explains things clearly, all you have to do is complete each problem exactly how he wants you to, and do all the homework. He gives out a lot of partial credit which definitely helped me during his class. He's not the most friendly teacher, but that doesn't mean he can't teach.

Dr. Fleishon is a great instructor. He conveys the course material really well. He does not require that you turn in homework, but I recommend that you do it anyways. This Lab was pretty easy anyways but fleishon actually writes most of the lab report on the board for you to copy before you turn it in. All teh labs are hand-written and turned in at the end of class so there is no homeowork which is good. The only thing bad I can say is that he actually uses the first hour of class for recesatation, so you will end up staying at least 2.5 hours instead of going right into the lab and getting out an hour or two early.

As a lab instructor, he seems to be able to talk non-stop for 2.5 hours straight. Not that there's anything wrong with recitation, mind you, but for that long? And plus, it was at 8 in the morning on a Friday too, so I pretty much wanted to go to sleep, and on top of that, it was pretty much useless since my lecture was a Tuesday-Thursday class and we had already covered everything for the week. On the other hand though, he rarely follows the format of the lab manual, which is a good thing and allows us to do the experiment in 30 minutes, however, he seems pretty anal-retentive on small things such as sig figs. Other than that, he's a pretty alright instructor, and it's pretty hard to get an S- from him. I probably wouldn't survive in his lecture class seeing as he wants everything to be perfect. And oh yeah, the way he writes his capital As is funny.

Neil Fleishon was a solid lab instructor...but I can't really be too enthusiastic about him because it was the little stuff that pissed me off. He uses every possible second of recesitation, meaning 2 hours in Neil time. When someone asks a question about a homework problem, he'll go through it and then go off for 30 mins about how important conversions and sig figs. Yeah, it may be okay for the first couple labs but not 5 or 6 weeks deep into the quarter. Worse, if no one has a question about homework...he'll make the class work through a problem he makes up in his head just for the hell of it. I like him because he's very consistent at explaining things, but hate him because he talks forever is so anal about the way people do his labs. On the bright side, he makes it clear that it's almost impossible to get an S- unless you don't show up, so you're guaranteed an S grade. An S+ is more difficult if you don't catch on to what he wants in a lab report right away. Overall...he's a good lab instructor to take if you don't mind following stringent guidelines for lab reports and can stand him talking for 2 hours.

In my four years, this is by far the worst teacher at the university. I did not open my book once during the quarter, which is to say I learned nothing. This may sound appealing, but taking nothing away from a course can come back to haunt you. He is unprepared, condescending to students, and is basically unqualified to teach the course.

I don't know if at any point he was a good professor, but he certianly is not now. For some bizzare reason I have taken him for 2 classes. 141 and 132. I can honestly say that between the two classes the only thing that I have learned from him is how to fall asleep with my eyes open. Most of the time he doesn't even know how to solve his own test questions, so if you make it look like you know what you are doing you'll get credit. Be prepared for some of the worst written tests known to man, complete with grammatical errors, missing parameters, and incorrect symbols, and missing information. If you want an A in a physics class, take him for 141 or something and just study for a couple hours before each test. If you want to feel like a retard in 132 take him for 141. If you like taking tuesday thursday classes and being let out 15 minutes early everytime, take his class. If you want to learn physics, I would probably not take him (and by probably I mean never).

This teacher was by far the worst teacher I have ever had my entire life. He tells the class that there is no right answer to one of his questions. When a student answers the question, he gets irritated because that wasn't the answer he wanted so he threatens to throw the student's quiz away. This guy hates questions and takes our questions as a challenge to his "teacher authority." Whatever you do, don't take this teacher. And if you have to, my apologies to you and good luck to the worst 10 weeks of your Cal Poly life.

Neil Fleishon is one of the best teachers I ever had. He was always very helpful during his office hours and he gives good advise about how to study for the test. His tests are not easy but if you follow his advice (do the homework by your self, do not copy it, do the problems on the book) you will be okay. I really recomend him. Thank you Neil Fleishon I really learned and enjoyed your class.

Neil Fleishon is a bitter man whose only love in life in convincing himself that he knows more than you do. Maybe hes not the worst teacher on campus, but I just plain can't stand the guy as a human being. If you're looking for a professor to constantly put you down and make you feel stupid, then this is your man. He loves to tell you what's wrong with everyone but him, but if you ask me the real proof of how screwed up our society is is the fact that this guy is married with a kid. Neil Fleishon should never have reproduced. Overall, this guy doesn't curve, is a total egotistical jerk, and should be avoided at all cost.

Horrible teacher. He comes in looking like he is pissed off and after about 30 seconds, you can tell He is. He explains nothing and yells at those who ask questions. Lecture consists of him scrawling a bunch of crap on the board. He writes on the board faster than I can take notes, let alone pay attention to. According to him, it's merely our fault for being a bunch of lazy students who have no business attending a school like cal poly. By the end of the quarter, the class had loosened up and would regularly chuckle or laugh as a group at his expectations. It's amusing in a sick way to watch him demonstrate what mechanical waves looked like by waving his arms around. He belongs on the streets with beggars and thieves, and not in our education system. If you're forced to take his class, look on the bright side, it can only get better from here on out.

I don't understand why everyone on polyratings hates Fleishon. He was a good professor. His lectures were fairly clear, his tests were fair, and his grading policy is straightforward. He never did anything to condescend students in class. Maybe hes changed this quarter? I don't know. I never went to any office hours. He brings physics toys to class to demo what the lecture is about, he presented material well, and the tests / quizzes were reasonable. I could have easily gotten an A if I had done the homework. There is nothing wrong with Fleishon, so take his class.

This man should not be allowed out of his house, much less allowed to teach people anything. He is a mean, bitter old bastard that should be forcefully retired. He has a major need to be superior and will do anything to make sure that your answer to a question is wrong. If you are forced to have him as a teacher STAY OUT OF HIS WAY. Sit in the back, remain silent at all times, do not let him know your name and don’t make eye contact. Do all of this and you can get a good grade, but you’ll be reduced to a mere shadow of your former self by the end of the quarter.

The first thing Neil told my class is that it was not his job to teach, it was the book\'s job. Unfortunately, he meant it. His lectures are BASIC overviews that do not serve you well whatsoever. That being said, everything graded (tests and quizes) can be found word for word in the text book. just do the reading and HW that he assigns and getting a B in the class is not too hard at all.

When he actually taught he was ok. Teaching for him though was going over two sections of a chapter covering and covering the most basic concepts. The rest you had to teach yourself. Physics 132 is not a very difficult class, but it is harder when you have to teach it to yourself. He is very anal about how you answer free response questions on tests and quizzes too, taking points off for things that do not even represent your understanding of the material or affect the answer. I found the subject pretty painful and the fact that I had to teach most of it to myself made it worse. Fleishon is a nice guy, but his teaching philosophy is not very effective.

Wasn't excited about the quarter having read the Polyratings for this guy. He wasn't the devil like some people here would have, but he's definitely not the guy that's going to inspire you to be a physicist. Yeah, you're gonna need to teach yourself about half of the material, but you've gotta think like a test-taker, not a student. He pulls his quiz and test material from the topics covered in his homework, so do the homework. There's easy ways to get the solution manual for the physics book, so there's no reason you shouldn't be able to figure it out. Understand how they do it, not why they do it. Pass the class. Don't be a physics major.

He is very picky about some things on his tests (i.e. you have to draw a picture for every problem) but if you pay attention to these things, and you understand all the homework problems (which he posts solutions for), you'll be fine. Whatever you've heard about him here, his lectures are clear, and he readily answers questions in class and during office hours (even dumb ones). I wouldn't jump to take him again but compared to some of the other physics professors here he's pretty solid.

I really don't think Fleishon deserves as bad of reviews as he's gotten on here. Ultimately, if you're someone who doesn't need extra help and takes good notes, he's great. If you're a person who doesn't respond well to a traditional lecture, he's probably not for you though. His lecture is just what that word means: a lecture. Non-stop material for an hour and a half. Because of how much material he presents, everything that could be on a quiz or exam will be covered in class. If you're someone who can't learn well in a traditional lecture setting, then you need to go to his office hours or you're going to struggle. He's a fairly difficult professor, but his grading scale makes up for it, with 15 point benchmarks instead of 10 (85 for A, 70 for B, 55 for C, 40 for D). Overall I liked him pretty well, but be wary if you don't like taking notes for the whole period.

I had Neil for the lab section of PHYS 132. I wasn't thrilled about getting Neil after seeing his poly ratings. Overall, Neil is pretty average. He is really stern, but he takes his teaching sort of seriously. He will pound you down hard for small things such as not writing down units or not including a title in your graph. As long as you pay attention to detail you will be fine. Just don't miss a Lab or you will automatically fail the class.

Appearances aside, he's about as understanding as a bullet and as intelligent as a stop sign. In fact, he IS a stop sign. You'll walk into his office, hoping to get maybe five minutes of his time, and he'll send you packing in three seconds, but not without making you feel like a piece of shit for coming. 1) he doesn't consider you class to be important. 2) he is locked up in his office all day long, and hates all of humankind because the fumes from the chemical stockroom next door has altered the chemistry of his brain. 3) There is an upside: if you don't care either, he'll give you B's. BUT if you try your best on an exam, he'll stare at you with his lazy eye and defend his notion that you must have had prior knowledge of the exam from someone in another section, and staunchly defend his theory. Just don't take him. If you have to, then maybe you should consider that God's punishing you for something.

Honestly, the bad reviews are totally right. First day of class he LITERALLY said "My job isn't to teach you anything". ??????????? Unless you remember everything from highschool physics like the back of your hand, don't expect to get a good grade by doing the homework and showing up to lecture. His lectures are 100% useless and vague, he makes you do iclicker quizzes at the beginning of EVERY SINGLE CLASS which count for your grade, homework quiz every wednesday, and never lets you make any of it up. He does it to make sure you show up, because he gives you a break at the end of the first hour during which 95% of the class leaves knowing that the next hour is only a waste of time. avoid this class at all costs. seriously.

Fleishon clearly stated that it was not his job to teach, and he did follow through on that statement. You are expected to read the book and comprehend the material on your own. In his lectures he quizzes you on the assigned reading and has a weekly math test on the assigned homework problems. It is hard not to pass this class because he grades on a 15% scale meaning an A is 85-100%, a B is 70-85% and so on... But in order to do well, you have to spend countless hours teaching yourself the material.

On the first day, the first thing he had to say to us was "My job is not to teach you" (it was also in his syllabus) he is a very nice teacher (he let me withdraw from the class no questions asked) and is easy to talk to, but that doesn't change the fact that he cannot/doesn't feel the need to teach... He gives a chapters worth of homework on monday that is due by midnight sunday, but the real problem is that he doesn't even begin to cover the first section until the last class of the week and then finishes 'teaching' the next week after the assignment was already due. There are also reading and homework quiz's each week. He is just not a good teacher, AT ALL.

He keeps his lectures decently interesting, but they aren't really much help on the homework or for the tests. This guy is a nice guy. He has a set grading scale, but it is pretty forgiving, so dont expect any curve at all. Physics 211 is fairly interesting, but can be pretty complex, and dull sometimes. Avoid this jackass at all costs, switch majors if necessary. All the stories you hear are probably true. Here's a few that I know are true, either firsthand or from very close friends. A student goes into this guys office to withdraw from a class after the drop date (for family reasons), and Fleishon forces him to write "I have to drop because I'm not good enough" on the slip. Another; Fleishon falls asleep (snores) during a grad student's thesis defense (Fleishon is one of a panel of three). Another; Fleishon pokes fun (in class, in front of the class, while lecturing) of other teachers. Another; Fleishon decides to give a 2 hour exit-exam to a grad student instead of the regulated 1-hour one (and tells no one, not even the student), and the student doesn't graduate. Fleishon is miserable and lives to make sure that everyone around him is as unhappy or more so than he is. He tries to pass his laziness and apathy off as "tough-love" but the disguise is so flimsy you wonder why he even bothers. Why not just show your true colors and be an asshole outright? Come on Neil, own your shit, be the Dr. Dickhead that you know you can be if you REALLY try, at least then you'd be good at something instead of a broken-down old jagoff.

At the end of class he says, have a nice weekend, even if it's tuesday and we meet thursdays... The tests are pretty much impossibly hard now that it is open notes, and average is probably going to be around 30. Don't worry, we are all competing against eachother. Third place gets a B+ and second place gets an A-, unless you have over a 93%, but you would be cheating if you got that. Even Dr. Fleishon "wouldn't do that well on his own test".
