Brian Altock actually reads the papers and essays that are turned into him, sometimes spending thirty minutes on each paper. His comments that are written on the papers provide excellent insight into his thoughts as well as showing how to improve your writing. he takes this help even further by being open in office hours and spending as much time as needed to help you understand your writing (the good and the bad). In class he is understanding and often brings fresh media/topics into discussions. He renewed my interest in wrinting and the importance of discussion. Pick him if you can

Altrock is incredibly cool in class and in office hours. However, when it comes to grading, he's a little bitch. He always promised to give us our papers back "tomorrow," but would come up with excuses every day of why he didn't have them. "Tomorrow guys... I was real sick this weekend (cough, cough)." Bullshit. The beginning of the quarter I thought he was totally cool, now I think he's a total douche. Everyone I have talked to has had chill teachers, so definitely avoid Altrock if you can. He makes me hate writing and his comments are so discouraging.

Alright so I read what the other two said and i agree with parts of both but that one is harsh so im here to defend Altrock. He is a great guy, very funny and pretty understanding if you actually go to his office hours. But he is a rough grader although Im not gunna lie most of my papers were done the night..morning of. Anyways I know if I actually put in a decent amount of effort, I could have swung an A. All in all Brian's awesome and your grade is reflective what you put into the class. Oh and hes VERY Irish so if ya tease him a lil bout that you're in, but in moderation.

This guy is unusual but he is a great professor, who actually reads essays papers you submit, so don\'t BS. The best part is if you get a bad grade you can go into his office hours and then redo a paper for a better grade, and he doesn\'t even average the grades. I really liked his class, and he made me like English. He also understands student stresses, and one day showed Finding Forester and then had us write in our journals about it, which the journals are graded based on what we did. Bottom line try to get him if you actually like writing about your personal opinions/topic you like, if you like to BS papers for a grade don\'t take him.

I have the Beyond Words textbook if he is still requiring you buy it for way less money than at the bookstore.. You barely use it during the quarter anyway but he has a couple of journal assignments you need it for.

He teaches the course as if it is the only class your taking and assigns papers as you come and go from class. Also if you do end up taking him, it doesn\'t matter when you choose your class times because he make mandatory visits into his office hours to turn in your papers. BTW don\'t ask him questions because he will go on a rant for 15 minutes about random stuff barely relating to your topic.

Brian Altrock is a TOOL! he might seem cool at first, but beware! He will lay more papers on his students than any other English teacher. And he grades papers like a bitch. And he\'s a ginger. Ye be warned!

Brian is a HORRIBLE professor. He\'s not even a professor, he\'s a grad student. At first, he seems cool, like he\'s \"one of you.\" But don\'t be fooled because he starts dishing out the work right away. There\'s writing assignments almost every class, not including your four major papers. He may mention some assignments the first day on the syllabus and never bring them up again so you\'re screwed when they are suddenly due. He also makes the class sit in a circle as if you were in preschool. He does offer office hours a lot if you would like to revise your papers for a better grade and makes himself fairly available by email. However, office hours with him was one of the worst experiences of my life. I have never felt so humiliated and discouraged. While I admit I\'m not the best writer, there are ways to be constructive and kind when helping a student. DO NOT take this class with Brian. Oh and he was beaten up in downtown SLO the day AFTER st pattys day. wtf.

Brian gives out tons of homework and grades papers very hard so you have to revise them all. AVOID HIM! Also tons of short papers due weekly besides your 4 major ones.

First off, i recommend you AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. He seems chill because he is young, but he gives out the most work of any English teacher in the department. Kinda ruined my first quarter here at poly. No one in my class received above a B- on their papers. He never explains the prompts for his journals or short writing assignments, he just says them once out loud and expects you to remember them over the weekend. DONT TAKE HIM!

Altrock is the type of teacher you want to take if you actually want to learn something and improve your writing. Everyone who rages on him probably only does so because they got worse grades, and yes he is a grading fiend, but if you actually put the effort into revising your papers, he will let you revise them multiple times, until you have an A. So if you are willing to actually improve your writing skills and get the A, be prepared for alot of hard work. Talk to him during office hours. I spent way more time in office hours with him than most kids did, but it was way worth it because my previous C grades were never below a B as of that moment. Altrock wants you to succeed, and if you put the time in its worth it. Do not take his class if you bullshit your way through your assignments...(I realize thats like 90% of you readers). He doesn\'t like it very much because he dedicates his very existence to reading every word you write...

Altrock is a smug, ginger, piece of ----. I wouldn\'t recommend him to anyone who cares about their GPA unless you have countless hours to revise papers every day during finals week.

its good to have a professor that understands what your going through since he was just there. he is very passionate about what u do and respect is very important to him, so if you can put effort into your paper and not be a total slacker youll be fine! he likes rants and has a good sense of humor and im pretty sure iv seen him grading papers at a bar in cayucos.

This guy is a ginger moron. First off he alternates between wearing a New York yankees hat and a Boston Red Sox hat, second he is always so nervous that when he lifts up his arms, his armpits are dripping wet. This guy teaches nothing, often times giving readings for class that he forgets to discuss during class. Don\'t take him. He grades like some sort of moron also, no matter how many revisions you do, your grade is how much he likes you.

Obviously the last guy was not a basketball fan... Come on, Yankees? It was a Mets hat! But Altrock is a great guy, if you actual care about taking classes and what you are learning then he is a great guy to take. There is a lot of writing, but it is a COMPOSITION class, perhaps you need to look it up in a dictionary before whining about the amount of writing. If you are serious about school and not just dicking around at poly like so many of us do, take him.

Mr. Altrock is one of those rate professors who really cares, and he\'s sexy too boot! I hate to admit this but I\'m going to really miss his class and seing him during the week. brains office hours our nut to be missed!!! His lectures are not only stimulating but also educational. I honestly feel that I\'m nit only a better writer but a better person for taking his class!

Definitely a tough teacher, but he was really nice to me and provided helpful advice when writing my paper. If he seems harsh in class, go to his office hours and be surprised. He\'s really nice and cares about how you\'re doing in other classes. Participate/share insight at least once a class to stay on his good side. If you don\'t participate at all, HE WILL call on you. Guaranteed. So save yourself the embarrassment and actually do the homework so you have something to comment on in discussions. The essays aren\'t bad, but you can\'t breeze through it the night before and expect a good grade. Drafts are key.

Dont ever take this teacher. He doesnt know how to explain anything at all and he asks you the most irritating questions that you dont really know how to answer. he'll say what do you think about this and when you ask him his opinion he basically just repeats what all the students said which leads be to believe he doesnt know anything. he also grades your papers a grade lower than what the should be so you have to come to office hours and talk to him. he makes you come to office hours to rewrite your essays and asks you what youre going to change and im like everything you marked..... also if you ask him why he made a correction he just stares at it and it really looks like he's thinking he has no idea why he wrote that because your essays are fine. i got a B in the class but thats only because i went to office hours and to fix my essays but i dont think anyone got an A on an essay without rewriting it. douche.

This guy was the biggest waste of time I have ever seen. He will ask you the most abstract question and when you finally get around to an answer he was just ask... why? like he is a 6 year old kid. He asked me a chain of Why's that were probably 5 long. Why this, why that why why why why. He also knows nothing and expect the harshest grader known to man.

He actually reads you essays and challenges you. Just because it\'s not an engineering class doesn\'t mean it\'s not hard. It is a different type of hard that may actually cause all us cocky engineers to appreciate how written communication works. anyways, he is chill, takes new media and real world events and puts them in class. He is a fair grader that probably errs on the side of hard, but no impossible at all. he offers revisions also so if you can\'t improve on your grade you are just lazy. Pick this guy for a solid experience.

By far, the best architect/professor I've had. She is an excellent teacher and an encouraging critic. Her classes are stimulating, and hard, but worth it. She totally rocks and makes you want to rock harder! Take the class and become a real architect-- if you can't handle, drop out, wimp and give your spot to someone else.
