Jay is the most laid back teacher I have ever had. We did three essays the whole year. Homework was minimal, but if you did the incredibly easy assignments they helped your grade. He constantly let class out early. I recommend him 100%

Probably the easiest english teacher you can get at cal poly. He pretty much only gives As and Bs, and constantly let class out early. We had three essays the whole year, and dumb assignments that were easy. Its a nice GE because you get units but you dont have to worry about so much so you can focus on real classes.

Jay is the man. There were weeks when we maybe had a total 10 minutes of class. I can't say I learned anything, but I still think Jay is way rad. He always cancels class and always lets class out early. There was maybe one class that we went longer than 30 minutes.Sometimes tough on grading essays. He is always down to chat and have discussions and the class basically runs the class, and Jay just grades. He's super laidback and probably the most chill guy teaching at Poly. Take Jay if you need a class that doesnt require any work, and dont expect to learn a lot.

this class is a joke. We met only once a week to have a 6 question quiz over 2 pages of reading. Class never lasted more than 10 minutes. There was no final, no midterm, no final paper. we wrote 2 papers the whole course and they were 4 pages each. Take him if you want to do absolutely nothing.

I don't know what with the problem with little miss Freshman down there is, but Gummerman and his class are super chill. True, class consisted of one weekly 10 minute meeting, quizzes were easy and based on a few pages from a small textbook, and there were only 2 papers. But Jay is a really cool and laid back guy and his class is an absolute breeze. If you're really hoping to find a teacher who assigns lots of essays, makes you do a ton of busy work and challenges your mental dexterity on a weekly basis, Gummerman probably isn't for you. But if you want to get rid of an annoying GE and you won't trip out if you're not that much better of a writer after the class - take Gummerman.

Oh this class is so easy!! Was the best class of my quarter because I didn\'t have to do anything for it! 2 papers which he goes over with you so that he can tell you how to get an A, and we only had class once a week for 10-20 minutes. Gummerman is supppppper chill and a really cool guy. LOVED having 145 with him.

Jay is the best teacher at Cal Poly, or at least for the GE category. I took 17 units while taking this class, and with little to no class, easy essays(2), and no final, I could focus on my major courses which was really nice because I got a 4.0 this quarter!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks JAY

Take him. Don't think otherwise. He is funny in a quirky way, EXTREMELY chill, and the one-on-one appointments you have are very productive. Meet with him enough times and your grade will surely see the increased difference. You meet once a week for around 10-15 minutes to take a True/False 6 question quiz and possibly talk about the upcoming essay and its due date. Just make sure you do the reading because you don't want to miss out on easy points on the quiz. One of my favorite professors thus far in Cal Poly

Although I wish I'd gotten an A in the class, it's impossible to criticize this guy. You go to class for less than 15 minutes a week, and only have two papers, no final, and a weekly quiz. The quizzes are super easy, and the papers themselves are not difficult. The more you meet with him, the better for your grades on the papers. This class is a breeze and not stressful at all.

The reviews are true, Gummerman is the man! Take him if you're taking this as a GE and want to be able to focus on your more challenging major classes.

I'll be honest, I took this class for an easy GE, and that's what it was. Whenever we met as a class it was for less than 15 minutes at a time to take a 6 question true-false quiz, a lot of weeks we didn't even meet. But what is extremely helpful about him, is that he would set up individual meeting times with each student in the library to discuss their paper and offer his suggestions.

Gummerman is the man!!! Instead of having useless lectures like other English teachers, he takes time out of his day to meet one on one with students as many times as the student wants to discuss the assigned essay. On his calendar, there were even some days that he was in the library 8 or 9 hours straight meeting with students! No nonsense and no busy work! Other English teachers need to take notes from this guy! TAKE GUMERMAN!!

Love this guy! There were only two essays for his class and the only class was 15 minutes a week to take some pretty easy 6 question true or false quizes. There is very little mandatory class time, so make sure to use the opportunity he gives with you to meet with him one and one to talk about your essays. Because of this, this class is definitely one where what what you put into it is what you'll get out of it. I went to see him for a half hour once a week usually, worked on what we talked about here and there and then just saw him the next week. At times you can get a lot out of just letting him talk, for one essay he almost wrote my first paragraph. He does sometimes see a lot of people in one day, so other times it is good to come in with specific things you want help with. Its something you feel out, but anyway you go about it I think this class is awesome for anyone. But just remember the more you go see him the more you'll understand what his expectations are and what he wants from your essay, plus the more you'll learn. Its probably different for everyone, but I really, really enjoyed talk to this proffesor. I love listening to someone who can give me a new perspective on something, and jay definitely did that for me with so much of what we talked about. Plus because I went to see him a lot, he really helped me with my writing. Bassically, I really advise taking his class, not only will it not be a very stressful class but if you see jay as much as you can you'll learn a lot! I haven't been in any other English 145, but I'd still without question say THIS IS DEFINITELY THE BEST ENGLISH 145!

Jay is the man!!! I was gonna give him perfect 10's in everything but polyratings only goes up to 4.. Easy class. I met with him in the library a few times a week and we talked about basketball. Then we had 10 minute classes and took easy quizzes and he's such a nice guy I would have not even minded sitting there for the full 2 hours. TAKE JAY GUMMERMAN

I LOVED this class. Jay is a really great, laid back guy. We went to class, did what we needed to get done that day, and got out. Class rarely lasted over an hour. The first half of the quarter consisted of reading literary short stories by accomplished authors, taking a quiz on them, and then discussing them as a class. The second half of the quarter consisted of workshopping our own and our classmates short stories. There are no tests and no final, but 60% of your grade is based on your creative short story that is due at the end of the quarter. I thought this class was really fun and laid back... I wish Jay taught 487 because I would definitely take him again.
