CHEM 106

Dr. Atwood was a very difficult professor. I had to work for my grade, it was not handed to me. I studied for many hours for this class. Her test were just like the practice exams that she gave. I found her always willing to help me in her office. I sat in there for hours everyday getting help from her. I was never once turned away. I am now taking Chem 111. She prepared me for this class so well, that I got a 98 on my midterm. I recommend Atwood, only for students who are willing to work for their grade, and devote a large amount of time to studying.

Dr. Atwood has retired. She came back to teach only Chem 106 this quarter. She should have stayed in retirement! Dr. Atwood was probably a really good teacher in her prime, but no longer. She would make numerous errors during her lectures, and have to correct herself often (even to the point of becoming confused.) She'd say something, change it, and then change it back again. Only the fact that I have a natural aptitude for Science saved me from becoming as confused as she was. (I hardly studied and still got a B.) She makes the class itself too easy, by giving hints on test questions, etc. I don't feel that I am adequately prepared for Chem 111, which I am taking next quarter. She is willing to help students, and really means well, but I truly believe that retirement is a good thing, and that is where she belongs!

First of all, professor atwood has this outrageous attendance policy where if you are absent 2 days, you can't get higher than a B. The material that she presented was very easy to understand; however, she taught it in a way that made it hard to stay awake and want to come to class. This course was just a prep course, and she only sort of knew what she was talking about. If you have a choice for someone else, take it, but if you don't, Atwood is tolerable....for a quarter - 1 lecture. :-)

Dr Atwood seems more confused about the course material than her students. Rarely did she answer a students question and when she did it was an accident. It is more likely that another student would answer a question than it was for her to answer a question. I would stongly advise against taking her class unless you are good at learning things from your textbook, on your own.

Although Dr. Atwood seems like a very nice woman, her style of presenting material makes the class much more difficult than it is really meant to be. With all due respect, half of the class got up and left on the last day when she did a problem wrong and a student had to correct her (a daily occurence). She needs to learn the material herself before trying to help students better understand the subject. All of the sample problems had mistakes in them and she constantly had to be corrected. Take my advice, and don't take Atwood.....I had already taken Chem in high school and should have been a step ahead of everyone, yet the way that she presents things makes them extremely hard to understand and it is not fair to the student.

she was a rel b***h. she taught the class as if we were all chem majors. The tests were ridiculously hard and she assigned homework problems that would take all week to finish. She showed no pity for anyone even though the class average was a D. She didn't even curve the fucking class. She sucked and I would try to take the class with someone else.

She is very demanding and this course is very difficult- Suggest take a different course. Test are 20 multiple questions and is difficult. If students don't do homework she can get angry.

Atwood was indeed the worst instructor that I have experienced to date. She tests from a test bank and sometimes pulls questions from chapters that are designated for tge CHEM 122 course. Her tests have mistakes in the questions which hang you up so that you can't finish the exam in the allotted amount of time. Atwood is rigid when discussing quiz and exam questions. She was not available enough (in office hours or after class) for the number of students in the lecture who had questions or problems. She uses very off-beat examples in the lecture (e.g. the chemical composition of urine...I didn't need to know this). I didn't feel that I learned much from her. Avoid her. She is a frustration for students. Chemisty is a very learnable subject...with the appropriate instructor.

She didn't really explain the reactions. She just went through and put overheads from the book up. We frequently rushed through an entire chapter in an hour without really getting anything from it. And her tests are horrible. She doesn't believe in partial credit at all. For people who aren't always perfect this class is a nightmare. Everything in an answer has to be right or you get nothing. Even if you make a dumb numbering error or something but have the right idea. Since the only grades she gives is four 20 question quizes (5 but you get to drop one), it is torture. You can watch your grade go down the drain and have no control over. Everybody makes little dumb mistakes under pressure and she is no exception. So why do we have to be tortured for being human?

she was very quick with her teaching. she'd spend about 10 minutes on a certain section of material, then on the test there would be 3 questions (out of 20) from that section. while she spends a lot of time on something that may only have 1 question on the test. practice quizes look nothing like the actual test.

Dr. Atwood is by far the best teacher I have had at Cal Poly. I was really stressing about taking organic chemistry since I had a hard time with general chem. I soon found that with her as my teacher I had no problem getting help whenever I needed it. I would go to her office hours all the time and she would always answer every question I had. If you are taking this class with her I suggest one thing, do every problem in the book even if they aren't assigned. That is what helped me the most. I would definately reccomend this teacher.

Dr. Atwood is very nice and enthusiastic about the subject matter. She encourages coming to her office hours and is very helpful. Her tests are difficult but she passes out practice tests everytime. They are very helpful. I would recommend taking this class but you have to STUDY!!!

Dr. Atwood class was the most fruatrating experiance of my collage career. If you take her be prepared to do a shit load of work. She assigns an insane, insermountable amount of homework. I have never worked so hard and failed. I would recommend doing all of the homework, going to all of her office hours and never missing a lecture. I would also suggest getting ahold of as many of her previous exams as possible. Do not expect her to do you any favors. If you stuggle at all in chemistry... take another teacher. Basically, try to avoid taking Atwood if you can, if she is the only option prepare to work your ass off.

Dr. Atwood was one of the best teachers I have had while at poly. I have taken Chem 121, 122, 377, and 477. The two one hundred level classes were required. I found the she presented the material well, gave adequate attention to ALL questions and was available for her students when needed. She was by no means a "easy" teacher; but, this is college! Last I heard students came to college to actually learn, which entails a great deal of study outside the classroom.

I learned that if I were to take up hunting, I should shoot deer, not bears, because a bear will hunt me back if I successfully wound it. Fascinating! I didnt know that the key to production and operations management was so brutally simple!
