Gearhart is amazing. He is hilarious and loves to use his hilarious stories to teach us things and give us advice. This is an intro class, but if you have the opprotunity to take any of his other classes, you definently should.

Richard is the hottest professor at Cal Poly. I literally get nervous going to his office hours...take him just to stare at his face and listen to him talk about himself. He never replies to his emails, obviously a playing hard to get type. He's so popular in SLO - google his picture right now. And then take his class. You're welcome.

This man is so into himself. Like truly. On the first day of class he asks you to submit questions that you want to ask him and then spends the rest of the quarter kicking off class "answering" the questions- which is just his excuse to talk about himself for 30 minutes. He will allude to being a celebrity around SLO multiple times a day. I can't lie, he's actually super nice and cares about your success so he's not a bad professor. As far as the class, you could not ask for an easier A. Just show up and you can succeed. But that is completely typical in the Journalism department. Overall he's not a bad professor or anything, but he obviously knows that everyone thinks he's hot and just wants to talk about himself and his life and his job working in broadcast all day. Richard- if you're reading this. You're still a homie and I wish you the best.

Gearhart is a good professor for this course. He's very professional but laidback at the same time. This class only meets once a week for an hour where he lectures with a powerpoint. We had weekly quizzes on assigned article readings. The quizzes which were about five questions each & weren't too difficult if you didn't read (although you should to make your life easier). Gearhart tends to talk a lot & get off topic, which probably takes up half of class time, but his tangents are interesting to listen to (although not information that will be tested). The final is a multiple choice test that's relatively short, but hard to do well on if you aren't familiar with the material in lectures/powerpoints.

A great teacher who is willing to help you out as long as you ASK FOR IT! Not going to baby you but will definitely work with you when trying to get accomodated with routines at Cal Poly as well as helping you better understand the subject he teaches. Very fun and enthusiastic, definitely a teacher you will want to go to class for!

Gearhart is an amazing teacher and the class was very relevant to what was going on in the world but incorporated history at the same time. We did most of our tests online, including our final. We had a few quizzes on the readings online also and had to write a historical paper about an older relative who we had to interview about their life and how they used media. We also took a trip to Hearst Castle to learn about William Randolph Hearst and yellow journalism--we did not have to pay for anything, not even transportation. I would recommend this class to everyone, even non-journalism students. It will make you more aware of the world you live in.

I LOVED Professor Gearhart! He made this class so much better than it probably is otherwise. He is really funny and laid back! There is a lot of work for this class, but nothing that is too difficult. You have to make a video, poster advertisement, midterm, final, creating and maintaining a blog and other miscellaneous assignments. He gives you tons of in-class time to work on and finish the assignments. Even if you have no ag background, he makes you feel comfortable. Great class mostly because of the great professor!

Professor Gearhart is a really funny, kind professor. he doesnt really take this class seriously in the sense that it isnt hard. he will come off kind of harsh at the beginning of the quarter but is really nice. if you show up to class and do all the assignments youll get an A

Gearhart is an easy teacher. I don't want to bag on him because I did well in the 2 classes I had with him but the problem I had with him is that he doesn't seem to care about teaching. He doesn't seem to care about his students, he cancels classes because he has to drive to LA or go somewhere else. Most of the time he is talking about himself and how his schedule is so hectic because hes a news anchor. I understand he's proud of being a news anchor, but I wish he used that knowledge to TEACH, especially since I'm paying to take his class. Bottom line- if you want to take an easy class take Gearhart, but don't expect much.

Mr.Gearhart really knows his stuff and he is honestly one of the most intelligent professors I have had. You will not regret having him. The pros of his Jour 205 class are that he really knows what is practical and what works and when he teaches he will teach you important stuff. The cons of him are that he comes across a little self-centered and I don't think that means he doesn't care about his students, it just means that he talks about himself a lot. I felt like he didn't really take the time to know me, but I would highly encourage anyone to take his class and not enjoy his energetic insightful and very intriguing self! With that said, I think he is a great good hearted man who really does want to make a difference in the life of students. I just wish he would have talked more with the students a little bit and not so much at us.

You learn how to write stories for the radio pretty much in JOUR 203, so Richard gets straight to the point and makes you break into groups to broadcast news segments on KCPR. If anything he teaches what SOTs and VOs are. The segments are five minutes, so you have to work together to break up the duration of each story. The best part is, Richard doesn't tell you what to do. He hands you the CD for your SOT and VO's.

Not to rip on Gearhart but don't expect him to get to know you or even care. Do not expect him to put anything he says on PolyLearn, so write it down and hope that when he finally gives you a grade (at the very end) that he followed through on those instructions. He won't put a deadline on PolyLearn so write all those down too, but he will change them so pay attention. Pay attention in general. He does not care what you feel or even think about grades. He does not care if you're trying to maintain a high GPA for grad school (he assumes no one wants to attend grad school) also he will ridicule you if you care about grades. Then after he lectures you about his personal life and the life lessons he has achieved, and the counseling he is going through to cope with all this struggle, he will find some way to relate that back to class because he a teacher. If you can endure that shit storm (you only have one option for J333 so brace yourself) then you will learn a lot. I learned so much from J333 I almost never wrote this until I realized future students should know what to expect from his personality and methods as a teacher. (Also I have a feeling he will read this and be even more upset ad make an example out of it for the years to come.) Gearhart has so much experience in the industry and brings up complex questions and starts conversations in class it's great. He doesn't tell you what to do and you have free range. When he actually does lecture it can be engaging, informational and funny. If someone told me this was the type of teacher he was I would have been ready for this. So good luck!

Richard is a genuinely nice guy. He is very outgoing, lively, and he's very open about his career experiences. The only flaw with his teaching is that he often doesn't respond to emails.

I've never experienced a teacher with such flaming narcissism as Professor Gearhart. I want to slam my head into a wall every time I show up to class at 8am to hear him talk about his personal life for 3 hours. I've learned absolutely nothing, he missed an entire week of class but made us show up, and assigns us work before teaching us what any of it means. I've learned substantially more from the CPTV kids in my class, whom he assigned to "teach the other kids how to do things." TL;DR He passes off the actual teaching to CPTV and leaves the lectures (when he decides to show up) to talking about himself and going on random tangents that have nothing to do with anything. It's week 7 and I'm still unsure what the course standards are, what my current grade is, and what this class is even supposed to be about. Literally writing this in class as we speak.

Richard Gearhart is a legend. He is the father of the broadcast Journalism department whether you like it or not. The relationship he shares with students is something I seek in every professor. He takes the time to understand that we are REAL people who can't always meet a deadline or complete an assignment. He is more than helpful but not intrusive. He is constructive but not insulting. His experience in the broadcast industry is extensive and he shares it all with his students.

Fine teacher, but a little dry in the presentation. I wouldnt suggest having her at 8:00 in the morning, might be difficult staying awake.
