I loved Professor Frame's class. He's just out of college and know being a student can suck. His lectures are to the point and he manages time well with lectures. You get to use notes on the tests and quizzes are just questions from the homework. His sense of humor too just kept class interesting. He's kind of addicted to smoking though and during exams had to leave the room to smoke--sometimes more than once. I see him walking around campus all the time just rocking out to his ipod. He made class fun overall and I had no problem understanding the material. Hah, and he works at Farmers on Thursday at a bbq booth--just for fun. I'd take another stats class just to have him as a teacher again.

frame is fucking sick!!! he would work out any questions you had in class on the board. his test were somewhat difficult but as long as you study and do the assignments you will do fine. he made learning stats (ick!) interesting and fun because he is such a cool guy! TAKE FRAME ANY OPPORTUNITY YOU GET!!

Do not take Frame for 251 if you didn't take AP stats in high school. Frame's 251 class is passable and is taught entirely from the computer. I didn't like his teaching style and didn't see eye to eye with him, but a lot of my peers did, so I won't comment on that. However, HE IS THE ONLY TEACHER TO TEACH HIS CLASS THROUGH THE COMPUTER, WHICH MEANS WHEN YOU GET TO 252, YOU WILL KNOW NOTHING (unless yo took AP stats). Just to clarify that, he teaches his whole 251 class through a computer program which means that once you get to 252, and you don't have a computer, you're screwed so hard. I'm not one to complain, in fact, this is the first review I've written, but Frame sets you up for failure in 252, even if you did well in his 251 class.

Imagine, you're walking on the beach. The sun is setting in the most beautiful way you've ever seen. There are dolphins jumping in the water and sea shells all over. Then, out of nowhere, a huge meteor comes crashing into the earth and ruins everything. That meteorite is Frame. This professor spends more time talking about the chair chained to the gate for whatever reason, more than class. Want to ask a question? Don't bother. He'll just make you want to drop out. He teaches by doing the problems on worksheets without much lecture time and expects you to use a program he never helps you learn. Just keep in mind, if you want to go on thinking life is beautiful, stay away from Frame. You're welcome.

I have never heard a single good thing about Frame. His tests have curve ball questions that he never covered in class. He said he has to curve the grades at the end of the quarter in order to make the average a C, meaning most people don't do well. His questions are subjective, even though it is a math class. He wants the answers written his way, even if yours are technically right he will mark it wrong because it isn't what he wanted. Going to office hours is pointless because he will not answer questions. He will physically swivel his chair around so he isn't looking at you until you leave if you don't have a specific question and are just looking for general help. His answers to questions are yes or no with no further explanation (even when prompted). I have had a lot of friends take this class and everyone wishes they hadn't. Avoid him!

Frame is a good guy, don't get me wrong, but he honestly hates teaching this class. The first day, I kid you not, he said, "I hate teaching this class." And did it show. His teaching style is kinda weird in that he lectures off of his course packet, which is useful to study from, but gives you no practice problems to go through on your own. Also, the problems on the packet are broken down step by step, but when it comes to the test, there's nothing. A bonus, though, is that you get cheat sheets on the test/final, so you don't have to memorize anything. The only people who seemed to like him were people who were kinda snarky and "bro-ish" with him. Overall, take him only if you have to.

Frame was a very entertaining teacher to watch because he was kind of an a-hole to people in class, which was funny so long as you weren't on the receiving end of his comments. Class consisted of us going through his course notes every day which was basically just a giant worksheet. He claims thats how he makes the class "learn by doing". He's not wrong; its just that we were doing both the learning and the teaching since he rarely went over the material. We would have online quizzes on the reading and homework which usually weren't bad. The most upsetting part of his class was how I had a b and had the 3rd highest grade in the class. He also rounded up the grades of the students above me but I don't think he rounded me up. If you want to work very hard and not have your grade reflect that, than I'd highly recommend Frame.

AWESOME TEACHER!! He went to cal poly for undergrad and then UCSB for graduate work and worked for the gov. and did all this exciting stuff...so hes super knowledgeable, except sometimes, because he knows exactly what hes talking about and you dont, he might seem to be rushing a little bit through lecture. There are labs once a week, which are basically just getting into groups and doing problems which he is totally willing to help you out with and they are actually a big part of your grade which is good, cuz that's where i learned the most. Using minitab for everything was kinda hard but as long as you learn how to interpret exactly what your looking at youll be fine...he expalains exactly how he wants everything written which is nice and is totally helpful if you ever have any questions...PS--> hes super hot...which means he looks and acts exactly like dane cook which makes class extremely worthwhile :)

Dr. Frame is a really fun guy, no question there, I had him at 8am and I was still entertained. Sometimes he covers material pretty fast and you are left sitting there going "wait...what just happened?" But for an 8am statistics class, I wouldn't have wanted anyone else.

Well I a feel that Dr. Frame has awesome talent. His methods of teaching CAN be effective, he teaches from all powerpoint, utilizing MiniTab and an activity to practice the material at the end of each class. I enjoyed that routine greatly...however because it was as if we were just watching him do the problems, since they are all on the computer screen in front of us when the activity came around I felt a bit lost. When I would ask a question I felt like he would mock my question and be cold in his answer. That bugged me, I felt like there was no way to confront him on the material. But his quizzes(25% of the grade) are all out of the homework (meaning if you just use your solutions manual at the very least you will succeed) and the homework load is extremely light. His tests are fair and out of the material, but beware on the second test to make sure you know how to correctly state the answers, that hurt me. His quizzes are random, so again if you don't do the already light homework, it will bite you. I am stoked with the grade I got, because the final for me was not what I expected, I was ill prepared...and he pulled through for me. It seems that he gets frustrated with teaching the students who just show up because they have too but he enjoys the subject. I had him at 7 a.m. and that was a challenge for him and us, but overall I highly recommend him.

Dr. Frame is pretty good. He is a little into himself and believes that the job he had in grad school qualifies him as a professor with real world experience, but no big deal. I liked his 252 because it is up to date. He used Minitab extensively, and after talking to others about their 252 professors, I saw that Frame was definitely more concerned with application and analyzation than he was with the details. In today's world, there are always statisticians and computers to "crunch the numbers," and the important thing becomes understanding the results you are looking at, at least I think so. This is what Frame teaches - understanding how to take statistics and make them useful. I also don't think I cracked the book, as his powerpoints and lectures teach you everything you need to know. Just go over the powerpoint problems as they match closely to what he tests on. I would recommend this professor if you are interested in learning how to use statistics and not just how to get answers.

Frame is probably one of the best teachers I've had in a long time. If you pay attention to his powerpoints and do the homework you'll have an easy time. The homework is pretty straightforward and he gives less and less as the quarter goes on. There was maybe one quiz in the second half of the quarter; he would just give in class assignments that would could as hw quizzes. Don't bother asking him questions after his lecture though, he will frustrate you by telling you to look back to his powerpoints which he thinks explains everything. Ask people around you, or ask questions during lecture, when he will actually address your question. I had him at 8am, five days a week. I made it to every class because the guy is awesome. He's the cockiest piece of shit I've ever met, but its pretty funny once you get used to it. Friday mornings were either canceled or very relaxed as he worked off his whiskey hangovers. Despite his flaws, the guy knows his shit and you will too.

Sam Frame is bad-ass with a head full of statistics. I took this course for 5 weeks over the summer and heard him say - on numerous occassions - that statistics is sexy. He even rated certain aspects of statistics on a 1-10 sexy scale. Time series made him mess his pants. Sometimes he would walk into class with his iPod in his ears and then ask the class what song he was listening to. He calls students "dude." But, if you get out of line (as in, talk too much), he'll put you down and shut you up. He teaches fast and to the point. He is very energetic. We spent all of our time in the lab, not the classroom as the schedule had it. Quizzes and a couple tests. He let us either take our grade up to the final or take the final and try to improve our overall grade (though your overall grade would not be lowered). This may be just something he does for the summer - not sure. My only issue with him is that he was intimidating. He was so quick and blunt that I was kind of afraid to ask him for help. He is more than willing to help, but his I just got out of the masters program from UCSB and you can tell I like to party attitude kept me from talking to him much haha. He gives out note packets which are really helpful. He is also currently working on a project that will rip $50mil off the market at one time. He also has real experience in the work-field which he says most stats profs do not. I think he might have done some government work too. He works at a Farmer's Market bbq also. He knows stats like the back of his hand and loves it. Cool dude.

This was one of the better classes I have taken at Poly. Samuel actually presented the material in an understandable manner and he was always available for office hours. I had him pretty early in the morning but he was so energetic that I was somehow able to pay attention. His tests are fair, he lets you know what will be on it and he allows notes. His grading is also fair too. If you try, you will do well...Do all of the homework! It pays off.

Frame was fun to listen too, and it is not that bad to sit through this lectures. There are two midterms, homework that is due in two classes later, and a cumulative final. However I found him a bit arrogant, when we asked him a question he would sometimes just walk away in the middle, wouldn't answer it, or he would be like look in the notes and even if you did already he doesn't answer it for you. His final had too many questions for the amount of time he gave you also.

He knows his stuff, but he doesn't convey it to his students very well. He uses PDF slides for his lectures that he controls and flips through so fast so if you didn't finish copying something, tough luck. He goes into a lot of theory stuff in his lectures that you do not need to know. Basically sit through his lectures, write down basic things like equations, then work on the activities and do the homework. All you need to know for his class is HOW to do the problems on Minitab. He's not very helpful when you ask him a question, you have to teach yourself how to do things, or ask your classmates. If you have a Mac, you HAVE to buy Parallels or Fusion for your computer so you can run Minitab. I thought I would be dedicated enough to go to the lab EVERYDAY to do the hw that was assigned EVERYDAY, but of course I wasn't. Your call.

frame is a really laidback guy but i'd have to say he lacks the ability to really answer students questions. hes unhelpful in office hours and in class but overall... the class wasnt bad at all. its actaully pretty easy. you use minitab for almost everything so its bascially learning how to use a program to do the math for you and interpreting it. the only reason i got a C wwas because of the final. i went into the final with a solid B in the class and getting Bs on both midterms but the final screwed me over. so all i have to say is STUDY FO RHTE FINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for the stats 252 as a whole, I found it much easier than 251. The class is basally just learning to use Minitab (a computer program similar to excel). It does all the work for you. You just need to know how to use it. As for Dr. Frame, he was overall a great professor. When I took him in the spring he weighted homework and three test equally (each 25% of your grade). I have to admit I wasn’t great at the homework part and was five points shy of a pass in the class. When I retook the class with him in the summer he changed things up and just had four equally weighted tests (if he does this again, don’t bother with the textbook, we never used it). I was able to scrape by with a B-. Anyways, he put a lot of effort into his lectures and it showed. Handouts made great references and gave step-by-step directions on using Minitab. For activities and tests he posted the solutions online afterwards, which made studying easy. Furthermore, for the midterms he gave out past tests/solutions which also made for a great study aide. However, like the person before me mentioned, STUDY FOR THE FINAL, he does not give you any study aides, you just have to know your stuff.

Everyone says Frame is a cool and interesting guy, but all i got was that he was some PTSD loony that worked for the CIA. His tests are pretty difficult but manageable, and his final is not especially traumatizing. However, I would not recommend him AT ALL as I was constantly frustrated at my attempts to contact him by email or in person- even when he\'s saying something totally banal, it sounds like he\'s furious with you. He literally scared the shit out of me and most of the kids in my class. do not even whisper in class...he will tear you a new one. No joke. Save yourself.

Dr. Frame is not an easy teacher and neither is his class. The class is all about knowing how to use the computer program Minitab, and the class notes really help. He is fair, and tells you what you need to do. You have to listent to him and take the class seriously or you will not do well. If you want an easy teacher/class, do not take him.

This class is pretty straightforward. Activities fill up most of the class time, which is nice because it keeps the class moving, and you won\'t get bored. The breakdown for his class is 20% homework (which he randomly collects), 20% for each of the two midterms, and 40% for the final. Don\'t be fooled and think the homework is an easy grade booster. On one of the homework assignments he randomly collected, the class average was a 2 (out of ten) and it wasn\'t because most people did not turn in their homework. That being said, this wasn\'t the case most of the time,he gives you two days to complete the homework, and as long as you go in to office hours and put in time, you will be fine on the homework. He will assign odd homework problems in the book, but your biggest mistake could be to look in the solution manual. On many occasions the solution provided in the manual was wrong. In general, the most difficult aspect of this class was the fact that there were not very many resources. The book is not helpful. As part of the homework he will assign reading from the book, but it\'s not worth your time. Two times I went in to office hours to ask questions about material he had assigned for us to read out of the textbook and when I posed my questions he said he had no idea what that was, and to disregard it. He provides activities in class, but not the solutions, and he won\'t always go over the problems to clarify how you actually solve the problem, so sometimes the class seems a bit ambiguous. The tests are fair for the most part although I found it difficult to study for them because his test questions were a little bit different than the activities we did in class. He really tries to be fair, and is always willing to regrade your test or homework. He comes off as rude, but I don\'t think it\'s intentional. He makes fun of people who ask questions in class, so many of the students in the class were intimidated by him, and wouldn\'t ask questions. If you take this class you can\'t be timid and afraid to ask questions or go in to office hours (where he appears abrupt with you as well). If you take this class just know you\'ll have to have tough skin and work hard.

Dr. Frame telling a student to stop text messaging is not humiliating the student. Dr. Frame asking a student that is not paying attention a question is not humiliating the student. Try showing him some respect first by using the appropriate salutation such as Dr. or Professor - who are you to casually call him Samuel?

Go to class, participate, and do your homework, and when you do all that, make sure you understand the material. If you just do that, its easy to get a good grade in the class. You don\'t necessarily have to do the readings he assigns in the actual statistics book, just make sure you know the material he puts in his own course book. As long as you pay attention and go to class each time, you will succeed in this course. He is also very helpful during office hours, so take advantage of that. Overall, Frame is a really fair and funny teacher. His jokes and attitude will keep you awake and interested in class.

This was the worst professor that I ever had in my life. Most of my grades are A and B in my school history, 3 Cs, never a D, but it was impossible for me to get a decent grade from this man. No matter how hard I studied, the midterms were as hard as can be. The lectures were presented as if the world was going to end at the next minute, as fast as possible. During lecture, he would throw a ton of formulas at a speed of 1000 mph and then would tell us to resolve several problems within 5 or 10 minutes from a packet created by him, which only him and maybe 3 or 4 other students could understand; the rest of the class looked confused and were unable to answer the assigned questions at the time frame demanded. I found him very intimidating. Not a student friendly professor. He appeared to me as a person acting under a high dose of caffeine, hurry, hurry, hurry! I highly would recommend Professor Olga, she makes Stats enjoyable. Frame makes Stats painful and annoying.

The only way that a professor like Frame would have that high of a "GPA" on Polyratings (which isn't that high but still) is if HE HIMSELF goes on this thing and submits his own "good" evaluations. Yes he is 'intelligent', yes he knows his stuff VERY well. But he babbles like hes on speed and does not, EVER, give a student a chance to ask a question and get a USEFUL answer. He is EXACTLY the type of person that would go on polyratings to boost his own GPA. He is an unhelpful teacher, and he is a very rude and selfish person. Frame presents material in a straightforward manner, but that isn't the issue. All professors have a PhD. His problem, and the problem that many of his students have is that he is abrasive (Read: an asshole) and is especially hard to deal with in any one-on-on situations. This guy is a joke. First, you cover a shit ton of material each class and he will never give you the chance to ask questions, and if you do get to sneak one in he will skip over the next section of the course to "save time." The homework assigned is randomly collected, so you can gamble if he will collect it or not. Gives quizzes based on his shitty lectures, so get a group where one member can take the quiz and pass out the answers and rotate for each quiz. As for him, if you try and approach him during office hours with questions, his response 99% of the time is "i dont know, whats it say" no matter what your question is. For homework that no one understood, he tried doing it and failed. Overall he is a cocky, degrading and doesnt mind telling his students how lousy or stupid they are. Does that not seem unreasonable for a pre req? Frame is the biggest ass hole i have ever met in my life. Not because I got a C in his class, but because he truly is. He does not give a fuck about his students. If you go to his office hours he tells you word for word "The answer is in the solution." This man should be fired and the only reason they keep him around is because he consults corporations. Just because you understand stats does not mean that you understand how to teach. He is an arrogant ass hole who tests you on material that you have not learned yet. It is as if his goal is to fail his students. DO NOT TAKE HIM. To be honest, I skipped taking Frame for a quarter because I read all of these horrible reviews. I ended up getting a B+ in his class, and yes, I had to work my butt off for it. His homework is graded harshly and he tends to "belittle" students who ask questions or try to talk to him one on one. If you follow the course pack he gives you, pay attention in class, and go to office hours (though they are sometimes awkward), you will do well in the class. There are two midterms and his final was difficult, but he may curve it depending on how other students do. He DOES sit with his feet on his desk and may seem a little out there, but the work load for his stats 252 class was manageable, nonetheless.

The class material itself is easily manageable and understandable. However, Frame cannot make a good exam for the life of him. Every exam was off topic, covering topics that were neither presented in class nor represented in the homework. That being said, a significant portion of your grade lies in homework and quizzes, both of which he grades fairly leniently. If Frame would simply make exams that were representative of the course material, everyone would get an A.

Frame is a douchebag, no question there. BUT he isn't that bad of a professor as many of these polyratings say. He presents the material crystal clear in class, I didn't have to go to office hours once. He gives online homework and quizzes that are pretty easy just to make sure you're reading the book, plus homework from in the book. I don't recommend going into his office hours, he isn't very nice. His tests are HARD, but very doable if you do all the assignments. If you just do the homework, read the book, study for the tests, and show up for class you will be fine.

Frame is an awesome teacher. he really knows his stuff and is good at explaining it. although the tests didn't always match up exactly with the material, for the most part they were very close. along with good understanding, he is very helpful and a funny guy. you'll enjoy the class, take it with him.

Frame completely changed his course for the quarter i took the class (fall 2012) from what it was previously. All we did was use the JMP program to learn statistics. I was really nervous going into this class because i had read Polyratings and heard how much of a douche he was supposed to be. Well, he's actually pretty nice. He learns everybody's name by the end of the second week and even when i saw him outside of class he would say hi to me by name. If the class is still the way it was for my quarter, make sure you get a good computer partner, because you're with them the whole quarter sharing a computer. There is almost daily homework, so be prepared for that. It is usually between 3 and 6 questions, so not too bad really. There are also online quizzes a few times a week. The class is just a steady flow of a little work. You never get swamped with work from it, but you always always have something that needs to be done. The first midterm was super easy. Study well for it and its an easy A. Then the material starts to get harder. The 2nd midterm was pretty confusing, but still not too bad. Definitely harder than the 1st though. The final is cumulative, but it is really just some stuff from the 2nd midterm and mostly material from the last 3 weeks of class. I think i got a D- on the final. It was easy except for the last question, which was worth a lot of points and i had no clue how to do. I did good on everything else though, so i still got a B overall. Anyways, the class is not bad. Frame is pretty nice and he does a pretty good job teaching.

I see there are a lot of negative reviews of Dr. Frame on here, so let me give you my perspective. I am an older student in the midst of a career change, so I've already had a professional career and know what it's like to operate in the real world. That being said, Dr. Frame treats his students like adults, because by definition you are now an adult once you are in college. He doesn't sugar coat things, he may question your logic and reasoning, and he may appear to be "mean". Honestly though, he knows his stuff and all he expects is for his students to put in as much effort as should be expected from an adult. The course is taught almost completely through a computer program called JMP. It's not too difficult to grasp, and is interesting because it is how real world statistics models are generated, so it is a very practical class. There is a decent amount of homework in the class, but it is not too much at any one time. The midterms and final are not easy, but as long as you study and really understand the logic behind what is taught you should be fine. The only problem I really had with the class was on the quizzes after the reading. He will assign chapters from the book that you are to read, and take a short quiz on PolyLearn after. The questions sometimes don't make a lot of sense, and a few times the answers to the questions did not match up with the book. The book says one thing, but Dr. Frame will elaborate and say that it is wrong. However, he doesn't explain this until after the quiz! Not really a big deal though, and hardly enough to really affect your grade. Seriously, Dr. Frame is a great instructor and if you think he is mean, then you are going to be in for a rude awakening once you start your professional career and work around driven people.

Not going to lie, he's kind of intimidating in office hours. That being said, fucking go to his office hours. He doesn't really tolerate stupid questions (hence why he was pretty mean to me), but if you have actual questions he will answer them very clearly. In class he's kind of ... well he's loud and just talks nonstop throughout class. His reading quizzes and homework quizzes are pretty fucking hard at times (for real... it's kind of dumb how hard they are). His tests are very very based off the activities you do in class, so seriously pay attention to that shit he does in class. Your asshole will bless you while the rest of your class gets boned on the tests Hard? Kind of. But you will learn a loooooot about statistics (and he makes it really fucking interesting too). So unless you're one of those bitches that only cares about the grade, you should take Dr Frame. Not impossible to get the A or A-, but it's going to be a fuck ton lot of work

Frame provided his lessons very clearly. He gave packets everyday with clear instructions on how to use JMP and this helped a lot. There are 3 to 4 reading/homework quizzes a week that are annoying. He does not collect homework. He gives a quiz on the answers to the homework as a way to check if you did it. There are also 3 midterms and a final. I actually liked this because each exam did not have much information to study but they were still pretty difficult. The final was cumulative which was the most difficult part. Other than that, he was a really funny teacher and always asked for questions. The class is 5 times a week, but it went by fast and our class had some funny times. Would highly recommend especially if considering a stats minor.

Frame is by far the biggest asshole of a teacher I have had. Every time I asked him a question in class he answered with a condescending remark and never actually helped me out. The same went for the rest of my classmates. He constantly surprised you with stuff on the midterms that he barely every covered in class or even in the book. Although he knows what he is talking about, he does not know how to present it in a thoughtful manner for everyone to learn. If I were you, do NOT get him as a teacher.

STAY AWAY. Frame doesn't care at all about his students. You have atleast 7 online quizzes every week. The midterms aren't awful, T/F, then multiple choice, and then some short answer. You use JMP alot which made it hard for me to really understand what was going on behind all the numbers. The beginning of the class is way harder than the end so try to really work hard at the start and it'll pay off. Don't expect this to be like Stat 251, I would say about 3 times as much work.

I'm not going to lie this class was a lot of work but you WILL learn the material if you take Frame. Go to class every day, find a study group and you should be fine. The final is only worth 20% which is nice and you can pad this with homework and reading and the three midterms - all of which are relatively straight forward. Frame doesn't assign busy-work, and doesn't make you do anything the computer can do for you. You also get a page of notes on all tests.

Frame rocks. Yes -- intimidating as hell at first, but if you're not afraid to speak up, work hard, and participate in class, you will have absolutely zero problem. He is actually a really funny guy and the ultimate bachelor, it's pretty hilarious. He definitely deserves higher Poly Ratings - he is extremely organized, knowledgeable, and will teach you the material better than anyone else. He is EXTREMELY passionate about stats and finance and gives us tons interesting real life data sets to work with. The class consists of 3 midterms, hw and reading quizzes, and a final. Yes, it's a lot of work (get prepared for a midterm week 2) but he spreads it out very well and I never felt like a spent more than an hour a day on his class. If I had one complaint about him it would be that he calls all the girls "young lady," and learns all the boys names. I was so satisfied week 5 when he finally started calling me by my name. But really, he's a really cool guy and a great professor. Don't be afraid of Frame!!

First of all, contrary to many of the evaluations below, I don't think Frame is an asshole. I personally thought he was hilarious. Sure, he can be really sarcastic, especially if you ask stupid questions, but he's not an asshole. Just don't ask stupid questions... If you ask him questions for clarification or further explanation, rather than just repetition (aka stupid questions), he will definitely try to help you out and almost always asks if his answer answers your question. He did do this really annoying thing, though, where he'd answer some questions with "If you wanna learn more about that, you should take STAT ___." But anyway. Frame is very VERY organized. Every class period follows his handouts, which have a single problem (usually) and a bunch of subsequent questions, that he walks you through step-by-step. It's very important to do the reading assigned prior to that class because the assumption when you do the handout is that you did and understood the reading, which you're forced to do anyway in order to pass the reading quizzes. The quizzes are easy peasy points and it's really not that hard to do well on them. I majorly messed up on a couple of the midterms (which are week 2, 4, and 6) so that hurt my grade a little bit, but really use the handouts and a study group to prepare for exams and you should be just fine. Bottom line is, Frame really is not that bad, unless you are a big baby.

This isn't a rant, instead a non-bias perspective towards Frame and his teaching style. To start off, I did just fine in this class. The reason why I got a B wasn't because Professor Frame was helpful in away actually, rather a result of multiple hours of effort in trying to comprehend what he didn't teach clearly. From the moment class begins he gives off the impression that he doesn't want to be there. I say this because he talks as if we already know the material, and expects us to know the fine details of JMP which he doesn't even know how to teach himself. If you raise your hand in class, good luck, he will talk you down and make you feel like utter shit. I went to his office hours a few times and his office smelled like cigarettes. Our office hour meetings were rushed...I wonder why. Overall this guy may know his stuff, but gives no effort in doing his ONE job, to teach his students.

Worst professor ever and most frustrating teaching style (rapid fire). He doesn't teach much and when he does try to teach something most students don't know what he's talking about. Week 3-10 are hell-hole of confusion and random unexplained equations. He uses a software called JMP and expects students to know how to use it on day one (and it is NOT a user friendly software). I emailed every professor asking if i could switch into their sections and was willing to take a 7 am 5 days a week just to get out of frame's section. He gives a 5x8 notecard for midterms which is the least he can do considering i have to leach myself the entire course from the text. Don't take him unless you are willing to suck up to get the grade.

Frame thinks that he is the smartest human being to ever walk this planet earth. He will sit there and clarify the most simple concepts for hours, then skip right over the most important details. I got all Cs on the midterms and was still in the upper 50% of the class on each one. He blamed this entirely on the class and refused to acknowledge that the reason none of us understood anything was because he was a trash teacher. DO NOT TAKE FRAME unless you are fine with having a 50/50 chance of not passing the class. Worst professor I have had since I got to poly.

Overall take a different professor if you can.He did not have a workshop for his class. He gives you a ton of these online homework quizzes and reading quizzes that are timed. Even if you did the homework and reading its super hard to pass because there is not enough time. The homework quizzes ask questions that are not on the homework so have everything you did on JMP open while you're doing them. Don't bother going to the office hours he just tells you to look at the course notes which are also very unhelpful. I went to two different free tutors with the college of business and they were not very helpful. I also went to my study session every week and still struggled. The only good thing was that if 90% of your class does the online evaluations they send out he dropped the 5 lowest homework quizzes and the 5 lowest reading quizzes, so I only passed one of the 4 test we had in that class and I ended up passing the class.

Professor Frame had an extreme lack of desire to help his students excel. Stats isn't my strong suit, so I would continuously go to his office hours to get help. Each and every time I'd go, he would act as if I was paining him to be there. He would be rude, wouldn't help me solve the question, and would just tell me to refer to my notes. He also would show up to class late almost every day with only his phone, sit on the table in the front of the room, and tell us to split into groups and work on the notes. While we'd work on the notes he'd just sit there on his phone. He is not a good teacher and unless stats is your strong suit, I'd avoid taking him. Professor Frame is actually a pretty good teacher if you read his handouts and do the work. If you procrastinate on readings, the way he lectures will make you feel lost and you probably will not get a lot out of it. Also, the amount of fucks he gives about you and your success is laughable, as his fucks given = 0. So don't expect him to feel bad for you or help you if you are not understanding the material. That is why I would stress going over the material thoroughly before class. If you do this the class is actually pretty easy and his tests really aren't difficult at all. There's a lot of homework and online quizzes, but they are all pretty easy and can be done within an hour at most. He doesn't make you compute anything for the midterms, you basically just need to remember definitions and be able to look at the data and analyze it which is really easy because he lets you use a 5x8 notecard. Overall I enjoyed his class and actually found the guy pretty funny, but he can definitely be a dick.

So a lot of people rated Frame as not a very good teacher, and at first he was exactly what people described. In the beginning of the quarter he was kind of an ass. Pretty rude and condescending when I went to his office hours and asked for help. It wasn't that his class was exceptionally hard or anything but he just didn't seem to understand that some students struggle with understanding certain concepts especially at the beginning. After like the middle of the quarter though, he totally did a 180 and became like a pretty chill guy. Pretty funny, nice, helpful, and WAY more understanding than before. He also ended up giving extra credit which helped my grade a lot. Overall, he ended up being a really, really fair teacher. The class is in no way easy, but you learn a lot, so don't be afraid of these other ratings, he's a changed man lol! More on the class itself: All midterms are straight forward, you get note cards which is nice (they can be typed). You have online reading, activity, and homework quizzes. My only reservation about these is that the homework quizzes are timed (one chance) and sometimes its hard to finish in time because you can't always anticipate what exactly he's gonna ask you, so just write down literally everything about the problem before starting. The class is supposed to be Mon-Fri but he basically makes Fridays online days which is super chill too. He's a good teacher though, I definitely recommend him.

BY FAR THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE HAD AT CAL POLY. And that is saying a lot because I have had some extremely bad professors but have never felt the urge to polyrate them. He has the most unrealistic expectations for his students. I was taking a heavy load the quarter I took this class and I would have to completely put all my other work aside to do at least 3 hours of hw for this class every night. I like to get homework because it forces you to keep up on the information however this was just way too much hw and you have it due almost every day. Like I would have huge midterms I needed to study for then I would have to do 3 polylearn quizzes for this class and after I did my 3 hours of hw for this class I would feel brain dead and would not want to do any other work. You also can't work ahead on the assignments because he only opens them to be able to do like 24 hours before. ALSO it was so hard to get good scores on the polylearn quizzes. He misspells so many things in his lessons that when I would type it in for the polylearn quiz it would say I got it wrong because I spelled it the incorrect way he told me to spell it. Also just one capitalized letter or typing in r-squared instead of doing r^2 would get you major points off. Its like hand grade your homework to assure your students aren't getting BS points off. Also he would leave every class for 5 mins to give us time to "work" and come back smelling like cigarettes. Just such a bad professor, I don't even know how to fully describe it with words.

Frame is a really intelligent man and in my opinion is way too smart to be teaching this class. He's straight forward and blunt, but I wouldn't say he's an asshole. Those that think he's an ass are sensitive snowflakes that are going to struggle post grad in the job market when they end up with a boss or supervisor they don't like. He taught the course well and covered a lot of material and made sure everyone understood it. The class wasn't bad at all. Although the class is 5 units, he didn't make us come to class on Fridays and the tests were overall fair considering you get a decent-sized notecard. The homework wasn't bad at all and I looked forward to going to class because he knows his stuff and kept all of us engaged with his brash humor. If you're a student that likes to kiss ass and ask too many unnecessary questions, Frame will probably tear you to shreds so I wouldn't recommend taking him if that's how you roll. However, if you're self-sufficient and resourceful this class is seriously one of the easiest math classes you'll take despite the difficulty of the material.

I took Frame's STAT 252 course online. This is definitely a harder course in general, but taking it online made it that much more difficult. He does not round or curve ANYTHING, even if the class's final grade average was a 73%. His exams are super detailed and very focused on JMP (statistics program you use on computers) that doesn't actually focus on the statistics material, rather how to work the app. He is unapproachable in office hours and makes you feel like you shouldn't be asking questions. In his syllabus, he stated, "Borderline grade decisions will be based on attendance, participation, and grade trends." I was borderline by 0.2% and he said he had considered everything he could fairly consider. He is super unhelpful, it seems like he doesn't want his students to succeed, and he is not understanding or sympathetic, no matter how much effort you put into the class. As far as his assignments go, there were reading quizzes (retake as many times as you want), activity quizzes (retake as many times as you want), and homework quizzes that were all due typically twice a week, 3 midterms, and a final.

Going into this class, I didn't take the former polyratings seriously. From the first day, he came off as a man who doesn't give two s**** about his students. He walks in and rambles for 50 minutes then walks out. He lectures extremely fast for such a difficult course and does not understand that are not all statistics professionals. As well as the horrible 50 minutes I spent in this class every day, there is over an hours worth of homework every night that can consist of 1-3 polylearn quizzes. Frame gives his students a cold shoulder and is completely unapproachable as well. The midterms are hard as well. I don't know how I pulled off a B-. Good Luck future Framers.

I'm writing this review as an alumni. Frame was for sure my worst professor at Cal Poly. I still have nightmares about this damn 252 class I took 4+ years ago. He's a smart guy, and was a horrid teacher who gave a bunch of busy work. I now work with machine learning data scientists on the daily at a large well known video game/entertainment company. I learned a little from 252 sure, but not any thanks to him.. He pretty clearly just wanted to do research and didn't appear to care about students actually learning anything. The thing that still shakes me to this day was the old ratty Arsenal jerseys he wore to class. The entire class bought the workbook he published... Even if he was making 5% off a $40 workbook he could afford to buy a new jersey every quarter so that you could read the number on the back. Not only do I have to reteach myself stats for work since he made me disinterested, but I now have a disdain for Arsenal. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk, godspeed.

We were his first class to use the computer program \"R\" instead of Minitab. To be fair he put together really good lecture notes but he was the most unapproachable man I have ever met in my life. He argued that you didn\'t have to have any prior computer program skills, but I had never seen a program like this so I needed some help in the beginning. I went to his office hours and he acted like I was intruding on something important, but isn\'t the point of office hours to get help?! He makes you feel stupid any time you have a question and then doesn\'t actually answer your question- just tells you to look in your notes again. If you took AP Statistics in high school then this class will be a breeze for you because it covers the different kinds of tests and what not. I would say 1/2 of the class is teaching the course content and the other 1/2 is learning how to use a program called R or R Studio, which allows you to visualize data. He heavily emphasizes the use of these programs in class and in the homework but the tests are entirely different. Rather than knowing how to actually write the code or functions from R, you just have to have a vague understanding of how the program works on the exams (which are MC with some free response). There are two exams and one final, if you briefly review the class notes and workbook (what he uploads each classes' activities to) then getting A's on them are very possible. The final has about 20% recycled questions from the exams. I would recommend taking Frame for an easy A if you can sit through boring lectures.

Dr. Frame is arrogant. Going to office hours does not help at all, as he is condescending towards you and makes you feel stupid if you don't know what you are doing. The point of office hours is to help your students, not belittle them. He might be a good teacher if he slowed down in lecture and took more time to explain things to students. Also, if you ask a question in class, he doesnt help at all. He just looks at you like you are stupid and is in disbelief that you are doing a problem wrong. His grading is ridiculous too, as he takes points off for EVERY single mistake you make, no matter if you get the actual problem correct. Dr. Frame simple put is somewhat anti-social and it comes through pretty clearly. When presenting material in front of a large audience he is able to crack some jokes and generally be a friendly guy. Much of what others have said about him true though once you try to go to office hours he is somewhat completely different and stand offish to be nice. He knows his stuff, and for what had to be the first time teaching 313 he did a good job. The Class is overall fairly easy if you show up consistently. His mid-terms are finals are pretty much examples you do it class on mini-tab with a few small (Say, 15% of the tests) explaining why something happened. Which again will be in the notes. Also he allows a full page of notes for the first midterm, 2 for the 2nd, and 3 for the final so studying comes down to making sure you write down all the instructions you need. He grades homework fairly hard, so put some effort into that, show up to class, and you should almost easily get a C. Put forth any amount of effort to study and you should get a A/B.

Frame is knowledgeable. Beyond that, I don't really have too many great things to say about him. He's acerbic to students (often straight-out rude), and an extremely rigid grader. You may know MINITAB in and out, but if you don't say certain magic words in your answer, be prepared to lose gaggles of points. Screwed up at the beginning of a problem? Be prepared to lose points for the entire problem. Missing out on a couple words could very easily net you a C or D on a homework or exam. I'm not here to complain, but just understand what you're getting into. Honestly, that issue is very minute though compared to his completely unapproachable personality.

He mostly assumes that everyone is on the same page, which obviously isn't always true. It doesn't seem like he purposely tries to be rude, it just comes across as blunt when students ask what he interprets to be dumb questions. If you ask for a small piece of clarification, or what would happen is an example was slightly different or something like that, he's not rude in his response. In terms of grades, it's 7% swirl quizzes, 13% reading quizzes, 20% homework, 30% midterm, and 30% final. Swirl and reading quizzes you can take as many times as you want and the highest grade is recorded, so essentially 20% of your overall grade is free points. The homework is extremely time consuming but not ridiculously hard (Stack Overflow and Google will be your new best friends), and the hw quizzes can only be attempted once. The midterm was way easier than expected. It was mostly matching, short fill in questions, or multiple choice, with only about 3 or 4 actual coding problems. He said the final would be relatively similar, but with more coding. Overall, Frame isn't horrible, but if you have a lot of trouble understanding RStudio, then maybe try to avoid him.

Avoid at all costs. I spent the entire quarter teaching myself R. The homework load is dreadful for the first few weeks, but then it calms down for the rest of the quarter. The midterm wasn't that bad but the final was virtually impossible to finish in the 3 hours. I would highly suggest moving this class to another quarter if he's your only option.

Holy shit. I've never seen such a piss poor professor. You teach yourself an incredible amount of information and receive an awful grade. Luckily I escaped with a B, but I really wouldn't let him near students. He is the perfect combination of everything you can hate in a professor: pretentious, assigns a ton of work, grades good work in a tough manner, socially retarded, and mentally handicapped. He's the definition of unearned arrogance. He's a major liability for Cal Poly and the statistics department. I wouldn't be surprised if he is fired soon, and I know a few students (including me) talking to the department to start this process. I hope he's looking for the door, because that's the direction he is heading.

Frame is a rude teacher who doesn't actually care about students or their success. He is very demeaning and doesn't provide feedback that is useful. This guy is on a powertrip. He loves telling students how "terrible" their work is in the comments without telling them how to improve.

Frame is a good professor. This class is all done in R, but you don't have to know the program to do well in it. He gives a ton of lecture notes as well as frequent, but not painful homework assignments. The final was insane but overall not too bad of a class.

Frame does a mind blowingly horrible job at breaking down complex concepts into simple terms. Does very little to establish intuition, i.e., it's week 4 and i still have no idea what the fuck we are doing. The guy talks at the speed of light and I almost feel like he's recapping time series concepts with a bunch of his buddies at a drunken dinner party because he assumes everyone's on the same page. EX: he derived four models in class without writing anything on the white board.
