She was friendly but not the most exciting teacher. However she looks like Martha Stewart.

Grace is an awesome teacher! She's a really nice lady, and she always brings in cookies and things. Teaching-wise, she's equally as awesome.. The slides she gives you in class, and the online quizzes are exactly what are on the tests. You don't really need to read the text book... I never did. There are 3 exams the entire quarter, and they're not cumulative. The final IS the 3rd test. I definitely recommend taking her!

Mrs. Goschke is a very understanding teacher...great for first year students. She very clearly explains the basics of biology. I only got a C because bio is my weakest subject and I did not put my full effort into studying. If you take this class, don't bother purchasing the text book, you will never use it. This is a good class for non-science majors. :)

she is pretty much the best. she has her slides online and they will help you study. showing up to class is not a big deal but will be more helpful because then you really don't use the book. try not to take it too early in the morning because you could pass out because bio isn't too interesting or you can't really make it fun. but she brings in cookies and stuff, so it's nice.she also curves at the end of the quarter

Professor Goschke is a really sweet teacher. I had this class at 8 every morning and so sometimes it was really hard staying awake in her class. But if you actually pay attention (a huge cup of coffee may help) you can learn something from the lectures. You don't need to buy the book for this class. Professor Goschke gives a lot of opportunities to do well in the class: the tests are fair (based on the lectures/slide shows), extra-credit is given, we have a couple of quizzes to take online (we can take them as many times as we want until we get all the points) which help with the overall grade at the end of the quarter. So yes, even though biology is not my favorite subject, this class made it a lot less painful than I anticipated.

Goschke was a great professor. She was not exactly the most entertaining professor, but she gave out 12 points of extra credit randomly throughout the quarter so I would really suggest going to lectures...often times those points were just for being there...not to mention it will benefit your test scores to go. I would suggest a workshop, as well...it helps. The final was not cummulative, either...and I got a 100...not too difficult of a class if you put forth the effort. Also, she's very helpful when it comes to not understanding a question. If you don't understand the question, she'll clarify it.

So I avoided taking this class my freshman year because i thought i hated biology, but Goschke was a great professor for this course, she made it straightforward and gave us everything we needed in order to do well in the class. She reminded me of a teacher you'd have in high school-- super sweet and caring and genuine. Even though my class had over 100 people, she still was interested in teaching us, even bringing us candy on halloween and making us cookies before the holidays...I mean it wasn't a small classroom, so that just shows how sweet and motherly she was! Her teaching method is off of powerpoint, the book isn't necessarily needed, but I used it to clarify certain things from lecture and used to practice quizzes at end of chapters. She definitely gives you more than enough chances to do well in the class--gives you extra points to help buffer your grades..like the online quizzes which are basically freebies, and extra credit points if you're in class. She's a younger, approachable professor and she definitely made bio more bearable. plus, she has good style! oh yeah, and try to do well in lab because that may be the extra boost to help your grade in lecture

Great professor. Very friendly and understanding and explains the subject material very well. Don;t be afraid to see her in her office hours and ask questions. She was so sweet (she would bring candy for the entire class of 100 and even made cookies for everyone once!) :)

She's really nice. The class was really easily. I went maybe half the time, and never studied and got a B. Not much harder than your 9th grade bio class probably was. She's really cool though.

This class was fantastic. She clearly goes over all the material that you would ever need to know for the three exams. Dont bother buying the textbook though, it is a good reference if you need extra help and cant attend office hours, but I never opened it and got a high B easily. The only thing that held me from an A was the lab score. She occassionally brought us in homemade muffins or donuts. Ive never had a professor that is more helpful during office hours that Grace. The easy, retakable quizzes have questions that are identical to exam questions so be sure you know them. Take her, if you ever have a question be sure to ask she will always make sure you understand.

She is a very kind teacher. She's very hard about the due dates, but she presents material well and offers all the presentations on blackboard. Also, she brings cookies and candy randomly which was fun and offers lots of extra credit if you go to class

She is the sweetest professor I've had at Cal Poly. You can tell she really cares about her students and how they do in her class. The tests are very straightforward if you study her lecture notes. The only hard part of BIO 111 is lab, but that isn't her fault since she doesn't teach that aspect of the class. Take her and you won't regret it!

Grace was a very nice professor. She would bring us treats sometimes, which was nice. I liked the powerpoint slides set-up she had because it made it easy to study. My one complaint was how early the class was. I took Bio111 7:40AM twice a week, with an 8AM lab. Bad choice because I was practically falling asleep. I was like .2% from a B, but she wouldn't give it to me, which was unfortunate.

She is super nice and always willing to help out. The material wasn't too tough and she makes everything super clear. The book is not needed but was a good help. Her tests are directly from the slides. I found the lab a little more difficult, but lecture wasnt bad at all. She gives extra credit to students who come sometimes when not a lot of people show, and she brings treats. Take her if you have to take this class.

It was an easy class. As long as you take the notes on the slides you don\'t even need the book. I didn\'t even buy it, and I got B with not much effort.

Amazing professor. she\'s sweet, caring, and is very flexible with midterms and finals. She\'ll let you take it during office hours if you want to leave for break early. You don\'t need the book, but if you have her early in the morning, buy the book cause i guarentee that you\'re gonna end up ditching all the time like I did. her class is mainly lecture, and if you go to class the book in unnecessary. This class was kinda like bio from the 9th grade.

Professor Goschke Is real lay back professor way nice and chill.. Quizes way easy all on notes/power points and class quizes easy.. A lot of Extra Credit on fridays so show up.. Take her for lab easy lab.. Way chill.. Just do your work and actually study for midterms/final. Straight up midterms on material went over class/book.. Legit Professor I would definitely recommend professor G way nice and chill

Goschke is friendly, and explains the material in a manner that is not difficult to understand. There are online quizzes every few weeks, worth about 10 pts. each. They are un-timed and easy. She also has a few writing assignments throughout the quarter, which are really easy. She gives credit in class for using the clicker and sometimes extra credit. This is also how she takes attendance. The class is big (100+) but yet she is able to answer questions and go back a few slides if needed. She is nice and makes jokes here and there. Overall if you study and go to class you should be fine as far as grades.

Bullshit class. If you want a boring monotone to READ some premade(yea the teachers edition text book slides) lecture slides than this class is for you. The only way I learned was from reading the text book. In my point of view the only benefit of attending lecture is the clicker points (which have weight on your final grade). Other than that I believe the text book pretty much does the job. All in all if you like reading alot of material its an overall easy class for an easy grade >>>IF<<< you study and not get behind.

Her lectures are completely useless. She uses eye-bleedingly terrible powerpoints, and just reads off the slides, adding in \"Umm\" and \"Mkay\" at least two or three times per sentence. The only reason to go is for the blackboard quiz passwords and the i-clicker points. If you read the textbook (which is overly simplified and occasionally inaccurate) you\'ll do very well on the tests, but the lectures are a complete waste of your life.

She needs to learn how to teach her subject. Reading slides isn\'t enough. I can fucking do that. I wish they paid me to read fucking slides and add umm and ahhs. Waste of time.

Basically, it was a boring yet easy class. The lectures are very dull, yet you need to go because there are sometimes in-class quizzes. She gives out a lot of easy points (written assignments, quizzes, participation) which makes it hard to do worse than a B unless you don't put in the effort.

DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! I REPEAT DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. Waste of money. I never even opened it once. Go to lecture, you get clicker points when you show up. She posts the slides up on Blackboard but they are missing a few key items. unless you want to kill your hand bring a laptop or print out the slides and just take notes on anything extra. Slides are not her own but she explains the material fairly well. Test questions are ALOT harder than in class questions so make sure you study. Nice teacher, explains fairly well, falters when asked certain simple questions however, but i recommend her.

she comes off as really sweet but she's kind of a bitch. nevertheless, the tests were pretty straightforward, but the first test was hard as hell but she didn't curve at all. you get points for showing up and using your clicker, so honestly you can't do too badly unless you never show up at all. she's kind of boring but honestly i spent half this class sleeping and didn't do all too bad. oh, and don't buy the book, share it with a couple other people. i actually used it to study a lot but my friends in the class barely used it at all.

Goschke comes off as a nice lady but she's not. Try and get a different teacher because she doesn't present her materials well. All she does is read off her power points that she just gets from the book, and you have to go to class to get her dumb clicker questions. I would rather jump ass first into a dildo factory than take her class again.

bitch that doesnt know how to teach. she takes all of her slides from the textbook website and doesnt know anything....shes supppper boring and words tests so unnecessarily convoluted. i only understood the material only because i went to workshop and worked my but off. this class should be a breeze but she makes the easiest concepts hard to understand

I loved her. I do not know why everyone is giving her horrible reviews but she is a great teacher. She puts all her slides on blackboard so you can print them out and take additional notes during her lecture. The iclicker, online quizzes (you have 3 attempts) and homework assignments are all easy points. Yes, you must study for the midterm and final, buts thats college. You need to know how to study correctly. Reading over your notes one time through is not going to work. Read the book, read your notes, make study guides of the things hard to remember, and do practice problems on prepyou. It only costs 10 dollars and it really helps you prepare for the tests. Take this class! You will love her. I actually learned a lot of biology this quarter.

This course is not too bad IF you read the book before class, print out her lecture slides, and do Prep-U. She takes the tests LITERALLY OFF PREP-U, so that will help a lot if you do it. Also, show up to class. The clicker points end up paying off big time, and the extra credit bumped people up an entire grade level.

First off, there is no need to buy the book. As long as you print all of her slides and bring them to class every day, you're A-okay. You can also check the book out at the library anytime, fo free. Anyway, Goschke has a slightly mean way about her that's super subtle, and you can tell she can be nasty if needed. But she did bring her entire lecture hall candy on halloween, so that's a plus. The exams were like getting slammed into a wall when you're on a nice morning stroll.. be prepared for it or else you're screwed. WAY HARDER than any exams for a GE class need to be. STUDY STUDY STUDY, that's about it. The exams are MC and free response, which is rough. Also, you need a clicker so if you miss one day of class, say goodbye to at least 5 points. Overall, an interesting class and okay teacher.

BIO 111 was a very easy class with Professor Goschke. She offered lots of extra credit, and if you understood the material she lectured on (which wasn't hard) then the tests were very straightforward. Every other week there was an online quiz that you could retake three times. She always answered questions, and never rushed through anything. Overall, a very good teacher for a Gen Ed class.

Goschke presents material clearly, it's just boring sometimes. If you want to do well, pay attention. She follows the book pretty well, so if you follow her using your book you will understand it better. The book was kinda interesting. She does use an iclicker, so you need to go to class, or find a way around it. Points are fair and there is a lot of buffer points/extra credit to keep your grade up. Some of the tests were a little bit difficult, but it was straight forward. The short answer questions were based on the journal questions she makes you do. She has been teaching this class for a while, so she knows what she is doing. She also is helpful in office hours.

If you're finding yourself as a low priority and with minimal options as classes, I would recommend taking this class. I only say that because an A isn't impossible (paying attention and keeping up with the textbook will get you that) and a B is basically handed to you. She isn't a very smart professor though, literally reads straight off of power point slides. One time she couldn't get the projector to work and seemed clueless on how she could possibly teach. 2 midterms, a final, and a bunch of soft points. Average work for a GE, which isn't much.

This class was very easy and a good GPA boost. I got an A on both midterms and the final without much studying. It's all very basic material, like what you learn in your high school bio class. Goschke is a good teacher but she goes through her slides pretty fast. She wanted us to print out all of our lecture slides but I never did because it's a waste of paper. So taking notes can be kind of rushed. I got the book and I'm really glad I did because it helps to clarify some of the things she went over too quickly during lecture. Goschke has cool videos and pictures that she took herself to go along with lectures. As for the lab portion of this class, the first two labs were torture but it gets better after that. I definitely recommend this class. It's easy and can be interesting.

Goschke is so nice and great! I really enjoyed her class and recommend her to anyone. Advice: Go to class because clicker points can make or break your grade. If you can, sign up for the workshop (Ben Buford is really good) and really helpful for tests. Print off the slides to follow along because her lectures are fast. If you have a question, ask in office hours because 1) teachers love that and 2) other students will be angry if you hold up the lecture. Trust me you want all the material she talks about. Most of the tests are based on lecture. Short answer is based on journal questions. She is really nice and a great teacher. If you get the chance, take Goschke for Bio!

This class wasn't too bad..but you do have to study! Bio mostly consists of memorization, so get ready to memorize A LOT. I was originally planning on being in a study session for this course, but it didn't seem too necessary once I figured out that I would just read the chapters and be fine, all of the info that she lectures on comes straight from the book!! She is an alright lecturer and a very nice lady. I found some of the material in the beginning boring but it gets better. Have to study for the finals and midterms, as long as you understand big concepts (photosynthesis, cellular respiration) IN DETAIL you'll be fine.

Let me tell you what I think about bio 111. It's not a difficult class, just consumes an unnecessarily large amount of time. I was in a study session at first, but I realized I wasn't getting anything out of and didn't really need to spend more time on the class than I already was. The lectures go fast because there is a lot of material to cover. This can make it difficult to actually grasp the concepts during lecture. I eventually just gave up on taking notes and I never bothered to print out the lecture slides because they were like 15 pages per lecture. Instead, I would go to lecture to get iClicker points and read my book during lecture. It seems to work. To study for the tests, I just reviewed to readings and did the online practice tests. Now the lab portion of the class is probably the most useless thing ever. It's long and boring waste of time. Overall, not a bad class. Learned a few interesting things from the book, but I can't wait to be done bio after this quarter!

I loved Professor Goschke. Her class actually makes me want to change my major, or at least minor in BIO. She was the only professor who taught this class when I took it, but I would have taken her either way. She takes clicker attendance every day and requires you to fill out bio journals before each midterm/final as well as three written assignments. If you can memorize, you will do very well in this class. She was always upbeat and helpful in office hours-wants you to do well! TAKE HER

Goschke is a great professor and a really nice person. If you ever have any problems she is more than happy to help you out. There are 2 midterms and a final. At the beginning of the quarter she says the final isn't cumulative, it kind of is: 20% of the questions are cumulative and 40% are on the information from the 2nd midterm on. There are a few small assignments throughout the quarter as well as online quizzes and journal questions. I recommend printing out her powerpoints because she can move through slides decently quickly sometimes. As long as you pay attention the class is a piece of cake (even if the class is at 7am).

A lot of memorization required. Mrs. Goschke is a nice person, don't be afraid to take this class. The lab isn't that hard either. Easy GE to get a B in with not a huge amount of effort. I ended up with a B+.

GO TO CLASS! This is the MOST IMPORTANT piece of information if you want to succeed in this course! She uses the iclicker so there's points to earn for your grade very single class. Besides that, there is minimum outside work besides studying...and btw, STUDY A LOT for the exams!!!

Print out the slides!!!! This will make it so much easier to listen and take valuable notes, as she runs through the powerpoints pretty quickly. Goschke is super sweet, although if you have issues hearing you probably shouldn't sit in the back. She made Bio very applicable to my life and also pretty interesting. I didn't buy the book, but really recommend doing so.

Goschke puts a bad name to what a professor should be. No one cares about her class, nor does she. It is really pathetic that all her years of schooling to obtain the stature of "Doctor" has brought her to teaching a high school level biology class. This class is completely awful. Goschke's grading policy is awful. Tests are ridiculous. I showed up 5 minutes late to a class and she would not let me turn my work in. Overall, she absolutely sucks and I hope anyone who reads this does not get stuck in her pathetic class.

easy class. tricky to get an A, but a very easy B. study for exams do all the work and you're guaranteed a B. Study more for the exams and do good in lab and you are guaranteed an A

Grace is just a nice person and I think that takes her a long way. I'd suggest going to class if you don't want to read, but reading helps a lot. Both reading and going to lectures is ideal because you read about it, but then she explains topics in detail in class. Just don't fall behind in the readings. And actually don't skip class. She has 2 iClicker points each day that are both points and act as attendance. Her midterms are pretty regular, and a few 10 point assignments here and there that are fairly easy. I'd take her again fursure.

She is not only a nice person, but she is also an extremely knowledgeable and gifted professor. She brings in extra visual aids to try to further explain concepts, teaches out of the book so it's easy to follow when studying for exams, the quizzes are easy if you do the reading, and the exams are fair. There really is no reason to dislike her or the class if you put any sort of effort out to do well.

I would highly recommend BIO 111 with Goschke to fulfill your science and lab requirement. Easy and manageable class for non-science majors and Goschke is super nice. Even though your test grades might not be as high as you'd want them to be, she gives so much extra credit and other points that you can end up with a final grade that's like two full letter grades higher than your test average, no joke. I learned a lot about biology too. Print out the lecture slides and pay attention in class.

Professor Goschke teaches BIO well, but expects far too much for a 111 course. Her tests are somewhat difficult and you have to rush through them. If you have another option for this GE, take something/someone else.

Goschke is a great teacher a knows a lot about Biology. She goes very fast on her slides, almost too fast, so I would recommend printing out the powerpoint notes from Polylearn before class. There missing parts in the printed notes so it still causes you to fill in the blanks and helps you learn better.

Pretty boring lectures and hard grader. Go to class to be able to succeed and study throughout the course. Not just the day before a test

This class is pretty much what anyone would imagine a basic Bio class to be. Lectures everyday, little i-clicker quizzes, and 3 homework assignments the whole quarter. Professor Goschke keeps the room relatively alive, but it ends up being a boring hour. She did bring cookies on occasion for the entier (200 person) class, I commend her for that greatly. Lots of extra credit opportunity and fair-ish exams make it real easy to get an B, but a solid A requires a lot of studying for the exams. Take her.

For a big GE class, I think Goschke does a great job keeping lectures interesting. Online quizzes and iclicker questions are throw away points- take advantage of them. Her tests are a bit challenging, but if you read the sections in the textbook that her powerpoints highlight, you should easily pass. Make sure to do well in lab, it's 25% of your overall grade. The best way to get a good grade is just attend class; focussing for 3 hours in lecture is much better than hours in the library the day before a test

Oh, you took AP Bio but didn't take the AP test? Oh, you're not majoring in Biology? Great, here's AP Bio again. Grace is a very nice lady to be clear and does her best with this shithole of a GE. The whole class is online via Powerpoints so attendance would be optional EXCEPT for iClicker points (2 per class). Took this class with 12 other hard units and a job, hardly showed up, was miserable anytime I did show up. Let's get real, I really don't need to know how many ATPs pass through the electron transport chain as a non-Bio major. If you people want to waste your time memorizing useless info, be my guest. I'll happily take my C and leave.

Shit Class, average professor, grades WAY to harshly for a low level GE, I don't know who the fuck she thinks she is. Avoid this class if you can

Goschke is EXTREMELY dull and boring in her presentations. You're much better off just reading the book and showing up for tests, except you will lose participation points (iclicker). Also, she grades EXTERMELY harsh and exhibits extreme favoritism. I witnessed her tell one student that she'd "cut him some slack" and accept an email of a written assignment, and not 2 minutes later another student asked if they could also email an assignment and she replies "well technically it'd be considered late and I don't accept late assignments". I think that pretty much describes her in a nutshell. tldr: AVOID HER! SHE IS BORING AND UNFAIR GRADER!

I wish more reviews would talk about the teacher's grading policies, homework load, tests... you know, stuff you'd wish you'd known before signing up for the class. So here's a useful review. This class is not hard- it shouldn't be. Right off the bat you will need an iclicker, and YES you will need to use your textbook. So buy it! The lab manual is tricky....we never had to turn anything in from the lab manual, though we did have to write in it from time to time, so kind of have to use that. Also, buy 4x6 NOTECARDS as soon as possible! She will not accept 3x5 and you will get docked. Amazon's got a good deal on them, as the library was sold out after the first day of class. And PRINT OUT THE LECTURE NOTES!!! I thought they were a crutch (and waste of paper & ink), until you look at your partner's notes and see how relevant they are compared to yours. Granted it's all about how skilled a note taker you are, but her lecture notes hint at the notecard questions she will ask and give you an idea about where her mind is when she's writing the test questions. You will also need a special type of scantron (not the standard 882-E, a blue page like scantron) for the exams. About the lecture. The class is huge. Sit in the back, and you will have a hard time hearing. So sit in the front when you can. The lecture ALWAYS has an iclicker question within the first 10 minutes in class. So attendance is extremely important. You will have a hard time going to her office hours asking for help when she takes a look at your iclicker section that has zero points (indicating you did not attend class). So attend and participate. Throughout a lecture there will be 2-4 clicker questions: some graded, some ungraded. Usually on Wednesdays (or last minute on Fridays) you will be assigned a pop-quiz sort of thing that you will have to answer on your 4x6 notecard and turn in same day. You get 5 mins to do them. They usually entail explaining the process of photosynthesis or cellular respiration, etc. I think twice this quarter, we got assigned a written assignment Wednesday and had to turn them in on Friday. While the take-home assignments are easy (watching video and answering questions), the notecard questions can be tricky and are graded a bit harshly. They are worth 3-5 points and there are not half points or "sympathy points." The lecturer. Before I continue, I must say that Grace is a phenomenal dresser. I actually am impressed with how nicely she dresses and still remains professional. It was actually kinda cool. Keep an eye on how well she complements her colors. Anyway, Grace is a bit of a machine-gun-lecturer. She goes very fast and powers through her slides. I can't blame her 100% because of the length of the quarter system, but it's something for you to keep in mind. Grace is very open and friendly (in her office). In class, she doesn't like answering questions because she has a schedule to keep to. If you are persistent and ask a question, you'll get a curt, unsatisfying answer with no room for further inquiry. So ask her after class or during her office hours. She is also very friendly with going over the tests and quizzes. The midterms/final. These were very tough to describe. The first final was pretty difficult, the second was easy, and the final was in between. The final is semi cumulative, meaning that there are questions from the previous material, but it's not equally divided. There will be a 80-20 ratio of new material to old old material. The first final had short answer questions requiring you to memorize and draw, among other things. The second I do not recall but was simple. And the final's short answer questions were a bit challenging and required extensive use of in-book examples. Use the pre-made flashcards on quizlet to help you study! All in all, a sweet lady with a desire to work one on one with students. Her class is too short for her to teach effectively, but she provides you with (half-completed) lecture notes (fill them in in class), animations, and will help you if you want to know what to study for each midterm.

This was an easy bio class, but I was just really lazy. I highly recommend taking this class. The final was comprehensive but easier than the midterms. I wish I didn't slack off because its easy to get an A. (all my friends got A's or B's)

This class is definitely doable, but it was a bit more than I expected. It is definitely not like your AP Biology class (which I got an A). Much more information. DON'T BE ALARMED BY MY GRADE. I got a C+, but it was a 78.5%. The culprit was that I missed the first two weeks of Lab, and that means I did bad on the first exam. Without lab, I actually got a B in Goschke's class. 25% percent is the lab grade, so you can do math and find out what i got in lab. AGAIN: I got a B in the lecture. Here's my tip: GO TO THE BIO111 WORKSHOP! Studying alone will be boring and dull. You need people who are doing Biology as their career and dream. Take brief notes in class (she talks too fast), and review the notes in the workshop. YOU WILL GET As or Bs IF YOU ATTEND THE WORKSHOP. It'll force you to do nothing but Biology. That being said, me doing bad in Lab, all I can suggest is: DON'T MESS UP YOUR SCHEDULE WHEN YOUR LAB IS. It is only once a week, and if you miss 1 or 2 labs, you are basically DOOMED for 25% of your grade. For photosynthesis/respiration and other things with "systems", every day, try to imagine it in your head and write it out on paper. You will then realize what you need to work on. This class is definitely NOT the easiest GE, but not the hardest. In Lab, you get to do cool stuff :)

I had straight A's at Cal Poly before I took this class. Fuck this class. It is so many hours a week just for four units. On the first day, Grace tries to convince you she will teach you about science in the real world and about things like cosmetic products that make claims and not to believe them right away. You literally do not learn a single fucking thing about that. You learn the most complex and useless information that you will never fucking use in life. I do not need to know photosynthesis and cellular respiration in such insanely specific and complicated detail that it's painful. So yeah, fuck this class and how insanely stressful it was. Hours of studying before the bullshit midterms and exhausting final will not do the job unless you kiss her ass.

I really disliked this class and because of that it was difficult for me to succeed. My test scores were awful for all 3 exams the lowest being 54 (first test) and highest being 68 (the final). I studied heavily for the tests but the questions were just more detailed than i studied for. With the 3 awful test scores i still managed to get a B believe it or not. There are plenty of other point opportunities including just showing up to class you get 2 points with ec at least once a week. Those points add up quickly. Hw load is minimal, but still a few assignments. Overall i would take Botany instead if you can.

I put off this class, along with a few other GE's I wasn't especially looking forward to, until I was a senior. Perhaps it was partly for that reason that it seemed pretty easy to me, and as as stereotypical liberal arts major, I definitely wouldn't consider myself someone who is good at science. I found actually attending the lectures to be quite useless, except for earning iClicker points.I literally taught myself everything just by devoting a few hours a week to read the book and stay on schedule. Three hours for lab was way too long in my opinion, but luckily I had a grad student who didn't really care and so I managed to get an easy B without much effort. Overall, Bio 111 was not my favorite class I ever took at Cal Poly, but an ok choice for a GE.

This class is pretty hard for a GE if you aren't a science-y person like myself I bombed the first exam (32%) but she provides a lot of room for improvement (clicker points, easy reading assignments, etc) and I ended up barely getting a B in the class. KEEP UP WITH THE READING. it will make your life soo much easier when preparing for the test cause sometimes she doesn't go over everything in class that ends up being on the test. She's really nice, but its definitely not easy.

Professor Goscke is an awesome lecturer and if you are needing a biology and lab class to satisfy your GE, then this is the class to take with THIS professor. She is always willing to help after class and during office hours. If you pay attention to the slides in class and do the required reading and quizzes you will find that the tests are very fair and compliment the material covered well. Given how many topics we cover in such a short amount of time, Professor Goscke does a great job at breaking down subjects and making them easier to understand even for first time biology students such as me. I highly recommend this professor!

Loved her!! At first I thought she was mean and hated us but as the quarter went on I came to realize that she was awesome and gave us so many buffer points for our grade that it was almost impossible to fail. Her tests were really hard and I got D's on both my midterms but still managed to pass the class. She doesn't give out much work besides online quizzes which you can always get 100% on and a couple written assignments which aren't too difficult. She was always really nice and approachable during office hours. As long as you go to class and do your clicker questions and do the online quizzes and all the assignments you can pass. Definitely would recommend her!

Goschke is an awesome professor and I highly recommend taking her class. She is very fair and nice. She is very approachable with questions and always wants to help until a student fully comprehends the material which I greatly value. She truly wants the student to succeed and gain a good understanding of the material. Her tests can be a little hard, but if you go to lecture and read the book, you'll find the class to be a breeze. Also there is extra credit so take advantage of that! She is one of my favorite professors and I am glad that I had her for my very first quarter of college. She is the sweetest and an A is totally possible!

Grace is a very kind lady and is not a very hard professor for Bio 111. Mind you this is a 100 level course and the material is all found in the text. She moves very quickly through the PowerPoint s, so a word of advice would include printing out the PowerPoint outlines that she posts in her polylearn account. There is a lot of extra credit opportunity and this helps extremely. You do need to buy an iclicker or purchase the app on your phone for the in class quizzes. (Basically it's her way of incentive to come to lecture. Overall Grace is very approachable during office hours and presents the information clearly.

Professor Goschke was better than I thought she'd be. Even though she's been teaching the same thing for a long time, she still gets excited about the subject. Especially if you ask questions. Definitely ask lots of questions. It makes an otherwise dry class interesting. She has you use an iClicker for participation points during class, some in class assignments, a few written assignments, and 2 midterms and a final consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions. The class was not too challenging, but the midterm and final definitely need to be studied for, more than you'd think. And for sure read the chapters she assigns. I would outline then before class, then go to lecture. If you go to lecture for the iClicker points, do the in class and written assignments, and study for the exams you'll do great. Also she allows laptops for notes but DO NOT pull out your cell phone and try to take a picture of the power point. She puts them all online anyways and she will call you out. Other than that she's really nice and knows a lot. If you ask her after class or in office hours about stuff she's pretty good at answering your questions and helping you understand/study. But she really will not accept late work unless someone died or you yourself are dying. Just turn it in on time.

If you're taking Goschke for BIO 111, be prepared to either print out her lecture slides or write down notes like the wind because she goes extremely fast through her powerpoints. This class requires quite a bit of reading and memorizing, the amount of material is no joke. There's good news, however. There are a bunch of reading quizzes that are basically ~90 free points and some of the questions on there are on the exams. The written assignments and clicker questions are also free points, and she gives extra credit every Friday. There's absolutely no reason why anyone would not have a reasonably large point buffer by the end of the quarter. Her tests have multiple choice and short answer sections. The multiple choice is pretty easy if you know your stuff (if you study everything thoroughly and take practice tests online you'll be fine), but the short answer occasionally requires you to remember questions she asks in class. Pay attention to the clicker questions!! I never got anything less than an A on her exams, so they are certainly do-able.

Take her if you are willing to be completely ignored by a professor. I have never been so disrespected as a student by a professor.

I'm a business major so at first when I started going to this class and receiving the first grades on the first mid term and some quizzes I thought I wasn't going to pass. I finally started to buckle down and DO THE READING and I started to get a grip of the class. I went into her office hours a few times and she was very helpful, I fucked up and hadn't registered my iclicker and she went in and gave me credit for the points I missed because she recognized me from lecture, very homie move. Overall this was not an easy class but I busted my ass and got a B-. There are tons of other ways to get points in the class if you suck at the test, like I did. On midterms I got a 69, 78, and on the final got a 72 and still got a B- in the class.

Ok. Here's the real deal on Goschke. She's someone who takes powerpoints directly from the makers of the book and teaches from those and only those. The first test was VERY hard and very large portion of the class got Ds and Fs on it. Honestly went into this class thinking t would be an easy A if I read and it wasn't. I would take Bio from another instructor, but if you have to take it with her it's not the end of the world.

Professor Goschke is very passionate about biology. She is more than welcome to answer any of your questions both inside and outside of class. While her lectures do tend to repeat the information stated in the book, you will find her lectures more valuable if you have completed the reading assignment before the lecture. Professor Goschke tends to lector rather quickly, so it is a good idea to listen for key points/ ideas/ examples that she gives that sometimes may not come directly from the book. The exams were extremely fair and can be passed easily if you do the readings. Overall, this was a very interesting class and it was taught relatively well. However, it is a course in which reading the book is extremely helpful.

While sometimes apparent that she knows that most of us don't want to be there, I actually really enjoyed Grace as a professor. My C+ is totally on me; I definitely did not put enough time into the readings. Regardless, though, she is a pleasant woman who heads a difficult ship, but I think that she does it well. I really learned to respect her as a person. Just take the material more seriously than I did! It's by no means an easy class!

Although Goschke is a fairly nice teacher, she definitely teaches in a way that does not prepare you for the exams. Her lectures are very vague and her exams are extremely detailed so be prepared to read. Also, her grading is based on the mood she is in. If she feels like she can't reading your writing and doesn't feel like putting any effort into reading it, she'll just give you an automatic zero. Again, nice lady but horrible professor.

This class is the ideal general ed biology class. Your grade is made up of online quizzes (80 points), 4 small written assignments (60 points), I clicker points (50 points) , two midterm exams (200 points) and a final (150 points). The answers to the online quizzes can be found on quizlet. The written assignments are a breeze and will take less than 30 minutes. I clicker points are simple and you get an extra credit point if you answer an I clicker question correctly on Fridays! The exams questions come straight from the text book. If you do all of the assigned textbook readings and take detailed notes the exams and final are VERY manageable (I got A's and B' on all of her exams). Best of all, Goschke offers a total of 10 points of extra credit for filling out the SAIL evaluations and writing a short paper about a growth vs. fixed mindset. Overall, Goschke is a very sweet and understanding professor and she wants her students to succeed--she even let me turn in a written assignment late under special circumstances. Her lectures are however, straight from the textbook. The textbook is VERY VERY well written--easy to follow along and understand. Because of this, I didn't pay that much attention in class--I simply relied on the textbook when studying for the exams. If you are looking for a science general ed class I would definitely recommend bio 111 with Goschke. TIPS FOR GETTING A GOOD GRADE: take the quizzes on time, stay on top of the readings, allot 2-3 days when studying for exams, do the extra credit (it bumped me up from an A- to an A), attend Friday classes and get the extra credit point, email Goschke if you have questions or concerns--she is very accommodating, and finally use quizlet --test and quiz questions are on quizlet!

Grace does know her material. She is a very smart woman. But she is not meant to be a teacher! She does not feed the information to her students in a successful way. Her tests are ridiculously hard. And she can be very rude.

I read a lot of the reviews on here and honestly I'm disappointed, i absolutely loved her and this class. The people who are bashing her are people who didn't do the work so they don't understand and are failing. She is very sweet and its a very easy class if you do the reading in the book and go to class.

Her lectures are kind of dry but she is really sweet. Also pretty helpful during office hours. Just make sure you get the right sized index cards 4x6 I think. The tests are kind of on the hard side but if you study and ask her questions you will do well in the class. The Bio Lab also helps boost your grade.

When I think of a stubborn old witch, Grace Goshke pops into my head. She has absolutely no respect for students, I went in to her office hours to look over my midterm and out of nowhere she told me "Maybe if you weren't on your computer messing around so much you would be doing better in my class." Coming from the kid who is surrounded by other people on their computer.....The class itself isn't too hard, a lot of her midterms are floating around and you should be able to get some help from that, but wow she was so mean and just gave her shpeel and would leave. Obviously, I would say I would not recommend taking her...

I went into this class not wanting to take her because I saw all of the terrible reviews. I stuck with it (even though it was a 7am) and she is actually really good. She is a fine lecturer and is knows what she is talking about. In office hours she is alright but pay attention in class! She moves pretty fast but is super cool! She is an awesome person and has done a lot of traveling. However, she can be pretty harsh when it comes to wanting to argue a grade. Overall the class is pretty fair and doable. Just stay on top of the work and you should be fine! I recommend taking her!

Grace is really mean. It's hard to approach her and ask her for help because she really does't care how your doing. She made me extremely uncomfortable to talk to her and every time I went to ask her for help, she seemed annoyed with me and didn't seem to want her to help. If you can, I would avoid taking her at all costs. Her tests are also very hard.

BY FAR the worst professor I have ever had at Cal Poly. She does an incredibly terrible job at teaching the material, not to mention her lectures are created by the textbook, not even herself. It is unfortunate that a GE required for most students has to be taught by such a horrible teacher. Goschke is very unenthusiastic and unknowledgeable about the subject which makes it hard to learn. She expected us to learn 6 new chapters for the final which is in addition to all the 6 chapters of material on the first two midterms.

Grace is not an approachable teacher at all, especially during office hours. She acts as if she hates all kids and her job. I think I saw her simple once last quarter. She goes through her power points way too quickly and then does not post the entire thing online. Her study guides are helpful but do not always specify what will be on the exams. Overall, this is an extremely stressful class. The lectures are beyond boring. I wouldn't recommend this professor.

Grace means well, she's got that grandma vibe about her, but she isn't very clear with her teaching. Granted I had her at 7am, but her lectures were very dull and she went over some topics so quickly that no one even knew what we just learned. Luckily I took a work shop along with the class (highly suggested) and had previous bio background so I was okay. This class is not impossible by any means, very do-able, so if you do get this class, don't sweat it, you just have to kind of apply yourself the day or two before the midterms and final.

A lot of people have written that Goschke is not an approachable professor, but I had the complete opposite experience. The few times I went to her office hours for help or to review a test, she was eager to help me understand. She does go through slides pretty fast in lecture, so it helps to print them out beforehand and follow along. You can then take your notes to office hours and clarify anything you might have missed. You have 2 Polylearn quizzes every week on the textbook reading (but they are super easy), there are 2 online reading assignments that you just have to fill out a worksheet for, a couple small written assignments that are slightly hard to get a good grade on (you just have to explain different things on a 4x6 flashcard, but her graders are pretty strict on your answers), there are daily iClicker questions in class that you can work together on (she also uses these to take attendance), and then there are 2 midterms and the final that are all mainly multiple choice with only 10-20 points of short answer. She's a really sweet lady, and she will be more than willing to help you if you put in effort. But if you slack off or are disrespectful then don't expect her to treat you with her natural respect.

So I took this class to fulfill my GE requirement and I am pretty decent in BIO. I know the material and I know the subject pretty well but on the midterm she gave me a D because I was too specific in my answer. The way she words her questions can lead to multiple answers and she goes about grading the test as though we would know which answer she wants. She searches for specific answers and doesn't regard your interpretation of the question. As a lecture teacher, she is pretty decent and the material in the class is easy to follow along in the book but her grading is way too harsh. She doesn't consider how she words the questions and how you might interpret her vagueness. If you can understand what she asks and looks for in tests, then you're perfectly fine. If not, find a different teacher or course to take.

She left the class for 3 weeks (9 lectures) and failed to ever answer questions about the material covered when she left. She goes so fast during the lecture that you can't take accurate notes and leaves blanks on the slides in PolyLearn. If you are going to go through the slides at a blazing speed, please post full and complete slideshows onto PolyLearn. DO NOT take this class early in the morning unless you want to fall asleep-very monotone. She is a very nice lady but a terrible teacher.

She was not a good teacher, take Bio 111 with someone else. She never allowed students to write down the notes on her slides because she went so fast. She took the class way too seriously and her teaching style was boring. Don't take her early in the morning unless you like to fall asleep in class. The tests are tough and the lectures aren't very clearly explained. She left for 3 weeks due to a medical emergency and yet didn't really clear up the information that we were taught by another instructor when she wasn't there. Try to register for another professor.

I thought she was a good professor. Her teaching style doesn't always resonate with everyone because it's very much information based and you have to actually do the work to understand the material. She assigns reading, which is not that hard to keep up with and you do quizzes on PolyLearn based on it (but you get 2 attempts to do it which I think is fair, they're not that hard). The midterms were a mix of multiple choice and free response. I only missed one on the first one and got a high A on the second again. She will curve by a point or two depending on the class average (got over a hundred percent on the final because of this). Lectures were fast-paced and I had her at 7 am but overall, they're manageable, if you try hard and actually pay attention. The biggest part to her class is applying yourself honestly. I really liked her class. I will say that she's fair and she is nice lady who will try to explain and clarify information. She cares about students who care about the class.

If it wasn't for the lab, I would not have passed this class. The tests are ridiculously hard, and if you do take this class try to get into like a study group or something. Not only are the tests impossible, but Goschke plays the favorites card pretty hard. Get on her good side.

I was nervous taking Goschke for Bio 111 because of some of the polyratings I read on here. But, it did not turn out bad at all. Goschke is an extremely nice professor and she cares greatly about her student's success. No, this isn't the type of GE where you can put in a few hours of work the entire quarter and get an A. But, if you stay on top of the workload this class is extremely manageable and I actually feel like I learned a LOT of applicable information this quarter. My advice is to print out the slides before lecture, read the sections she tells you to read each day (it's on the syllabus), and do each poly learn quiz (super easy, you get 2 try's). Also, show up to lecture!!! She gives out a whole midterm worth of free points if you do the polylearn quizzes and show up for lecture. One Friday lecture there were barely any students there and she gave us all 5 extra credit points for showing up. There are also 2 assignments you have to do throughout the quarter, but these are fairly easy, about 10-15 short answer questions that takes no more than 30 minutes. As far as studying for the midterms and finals, I recommend working through the study guides she posts and creating your own study guide with the answers. Draw out diagrams and re-read sections of the textbook that confused you while figuring out the answers to the study guide. Also, do the recommended practice problems in the textbook that she tells you to do at the end of each study guide!! There are some questions on the midterms that are literally the exact questions from the textbook. Overall, I LOVED Goschke and I do not regret whatsoever taking her.

Grace is a very nice woman and seems easily approachable. However, her lectures are a real struggle. She presents her own PowerPoints which have slides full of useful information, but she spends only 15 seconds max on each slide and mentions a lot information not on the slides; so much information it's impossible to write it all down before she moves on. When no one in the class knows the answer, she tells us to study it because it will be on the test rather than explaining the answer. Though nice, avoid taking this professor.

Fuck this bitch. DO NOT take this professor, even if it means having to wait a quarter. She doesn't know how to teach, she mumbles and you cannot hear her, and her exams have a ridiculous amount of material, not to mention she covers 6 (yes--SIX!!!!) chapters in the last 2 weeks of the quarter, that you are expected to read and know every single painful little detail on top of the other 6-8 chapters covered throughout the quarter. What a fucking disgrace to Cal Poly this cunt is

Goschke was seemingly a nice professor at first but as the quarter went along, it became apparent that her lectures were very unorganized and too fast to really learn anything. She's a very accomplished biologist, but she fails to demonstrate that in a class. Per class, there was simply too much information on the slides for us to sort through and she does not make it clear at all what she wants us to know. She also has a tough time treating this class as a GE. Many times this past quarter I recall her recognizing that many students in class are not BIO majors and that we all come from different academic backgrounds, but she holds us to the same standards as BIO students which makes her midterms ridiculous. This class is definitely not an easy A, maybe a B, a C is definitely achievable but you'll still have to work for it. She grades on two midterms, a final, participation (iClickers), 2-3 written assignments, and online quizzes, and the lab grade. If you fall behind in any one of these categories, your grade will likely fall apart too. This class requires you to spend a lot of time outside of class with your notes sorting out the information and making sure you can apply it so that you'll be ready for the test. Overall, the class itself isn't too bad but she is not the right professor for this.

I just would like to say that this is by far the worst teacher I've ever had here at Cal Poly. I took her as a sophomore and obviously still think about her, and how awful this course was. She does not care if you cannot read as fast as everyone else. She does not care if you don't understand something. She will read from her powerpoint slides that she created, and teach as though she's teaching a room full of Bio major who know everything already. She has a very terrible attitude towards teaching. She acts like she doesn't like her job and is just trying to make it through one more lecture without having an emotional breakdown. No, this class isn't necessarily difficult, if you plan to study thoroughly each day for at least an hour-2 hours. Yet, you won't want to. Also, don't plan on being a study athlete in her class. A student athlete walked in less than a minute into lecture (at 7:00 a.m. mind you) and she went off on a tangent about how student athletes feel entitled to do as they please and come in late whenever they feel like it.....while other students were still filing in..... In my opinion, the teacher makes the class, in general. The hardest subject can become reasonable to any student if taught with happiness and joy for the sake of joy. Thus, this class was like walking into hell for 2 hours every Monday and Wednedsay at 7 a.m.

At first glance, Professor Goschke appears to be a kind and relatively understanding person. But as the quarter progresses, her horrendous teaching ability begins to show. Her lectures rarely go in detail, and she also flies through the slides she is presenting. I always have my laptop out with the slides out because I can not get all the information down in time. This causes me to fall behind in lecture, and lose track at where we are. She is super picky with your answers and how you explain your thought processing during the short answer portions of her exams. Every time I go to her office for help, she gets visibly annoyed with me showing up. I have sat down with her and told her that I have not taken a Biology class in 3 years, but she still expects me to perform as if I am majoring in Bio. She has little to no understanding that her class is very demanding (at least for those who have not taken a BIO class), and has no patience for those who do not get a concept on their first or second time studying it. I am putting more effort in time into this class than any of my major or support classes. It sucks that this class will hinder my GPA, even though I have no interest in pursuing a career in the Biology. TL;DR This class is a purple nurple if you have not taken a bio class recently.

Professor Goschke is probably one of the nicest professors I have had at poly, she is seriously a sweetheart. That being said, this class is definitely not a walk in the park. The homework she gives is 100% not correlated to what she puts on the exams. Everything on her exams is from in class lectures, so you really have to go to all the classes and her test material is pretty detailed so you should really take good notes. The way she weights the homework and attendance makes it so its not that hard to get a good grade if you do the work though. The highest grade I got on any of the 3 exams was a 65%, the other two being in the 50%'s, and I still passed with a B-.

She seems like a great person but her tests are not based off of her lectures at all. I have never gotten a C but her test have screwed me over. It honestly might not be that hard of a class, but she just tests of stupid things that don’t relate to what her lecture slides are. She deserves to be fired because of her teaching. Just take B2B4 online or any other class. Again she seems like a nice person but she can’t teach for crap. very stupid class.

At first I believed she was a nicer Professor with just a quieter tone, realized into the semester she was really just not enthusiastic about her class. After she referenced being "a bad professor" multiple times, I began to see how many people were really having random troubles with what should be an easier GE class. Would not recommend unless you want to put in extra effort.

This teacher taught the class as if it was a class for Biology majors. Everyone in it basically had to for General Ed and she made it so difficult. I only ever learned things from reading the textbook because the lectures are so dry and boring it’s ridiculously hard to follow. Not to mention the fact that she stays on each slide for 0.03 seconds, but then expects you to answer clicker questions on that information??? I only went to class for the clicker questions because other than that, I learned nothing. Sure, she’s a nice lady and I would probably grade her a bit higher on a “PersonRatings,” but as a professor.... just no. She should stick to her own research instead of ruining kids GPAs. It’s pretty ridiculous actually.

If you have the option to take this class with another instructor I highly recommend it. Grace seems irritated to have to teach this class. She describes it as "basic" and yet it is really really difficult for non-science majors (the hardest class I have taken as a psych major- harder than Freberg's biopsych). I think I will end up with a B or C in the class, but mostly, I just want to pass so I never have to take it again. She is really unclear, goes through slides way too fast, and just seems irritated to be here. There are 3 midterms and a final, and two short assignments and iclicker points. Most of your grade is tests and they are not easy. I am studying for the 3rd midterm and have a 20 page single space typed study guide.

I'm sure Goschke is an awesome mom and she seems like a great person but holy hell does she need some help in her presentation of information. She tends to put up a lot of information on slides and then speeds through it on to the next. This would be totally fine because she does put most of her stuff on polylearn, but she also talks about info not on the slides which you also don't have time to take down. When students would ask her a question it seemed as though she would make an effort to answer by talking for quite a while, however she never really answered questions clearly if at all. A lot of the time I ended up more confused than I already was. She does clicker points which I hate (but that's besides the point) and her questions never really make any sense. She spends a lot of time correcting herself, or apologizing for mistakes pointed out by students, but never gives any points back. I get it, its an "upper division course" as she likes to remind us, but this happened way too often to be excused by course level. Lastly, her final is cumulative. Only 45 questions with a few free response and a couple definitions leaves you wondering why you are studying a 30 page study guide. I love genetics but this class made me want to hate it. It could definitely be worse, but there are a lot of avoidable issues that limit a positive experience.

I'm sure Grace has good intentions, and she knows a lot. The way she conveys that isn't always clear. A lot of what is in the lecture, is broad. This class you really have to teach yourself. Start doing the study guides as soon as you can, and also hope that you answered the study guides in the way that Grace wants you to answer them. This being said, be sure you go in her office hours after tests and go over it with her. There has been many times where you get the right answer but she marks it wrong because you didn't word it the way she wanted it to be worded, but if you don't go in, you don't get the points. So if you don't study for your grade and then argue for it, this class really sucks. This class sucked regardless, but it sucks more when you think you're right, but you're not textbook/Grace wording right. All in all, you have to study your butt off for this class, and you come out hating genetics, when it's actually a fascinating subject. Grace just kills any wonder and coolness of the class.

This class was awful. I was really excited for it because I think genetics is fascinating. However, Grace is not successful in teaching the class. The way she conveys information seems like she's just telling it to you rather than teaching it to you. If you ask a question, she takes forever to answer and it feels like she hasn't answered it directly. She also makes a lot of mistakes on quizzes, tests, and clicker questions and you have to bother her a million times to get them back and then maybe she'll remember to do it. The tests were really hard even if you do the study guide, go to class, participate, and read the textbook. I ended up just hating everything about the class by the end of the quarter because it was a major source of stress and frustration.

I've had Professor Goschke for both BIO 111 and BIO 302, and have had good experiences in both. BIO 302 was surprisingly easier in my opinion and was also extremely interesting. However, this was more of a survey class so we covered a lot of information without delving too deep into each topic. Her exams were all reasonable as long as you attend lecture and read the book. I am an English major and felt like I had a good grasp on the material. One thing I really appreciated was her study guides. She didn't make these for BIO 111, so it was a nice surprise and they all reflected the information we were tested on. She also does a really great job at posting our scores promptly after taking the exams. This was her first time teaching BIO 302 and overall I think she did a really good job. I highly recommend taking this class with Professor Goschke if you have the chance. You do not have to be a science major to do well!

I had Grace for both Bio 111 and Bio 302 and I loved her. Her teaching style takes getting used to but she is a wonderful teacher and everything she does is in the interest of her students. Go to her office hours and you will be fine!

Professor Goschke's class may not be the easiest class in the world, but if you are required to take it for your major, it is completely doable. As a person, Goschke is fascinating, kind, and intelligent. If you go into office hours, she will take the time to make sure you understand the concepts. She spent over an hour going over one of my midterms with me, during a time that wasn't even her normal office hours. Make sure you print our her lecture notes and pay attention in class, because if you are on your phone or laptop not paying attention, she will be less likely to help you if you do poorly on the midterms (which makes sense). Also, the clicker points and quizzes really boost your grade! So attend class and do the assignments and this is an easy B, super doable A.

I would not recommend this professor for people who are not science majors. She is not good at presenting info clearly and is not helpful in her office hours. She is a nice lady, but a terrible teacher overall. Also, her exams are a lot more difficult than her lectures prepare you for.

For all of you who are complaining about her, and for who are reading those mean comments, she really isn't that bad. She is a sweet lady who really cares about her students. While others are saying her lectures aren't clear, honestly they are. Her exams are just brutal if you don't read the supplemental required reading, which makes sense. The previous time I took this class I got a D+ with D's and F's on the exams and final. This time I should get a B- with C's and C-'s. She really is a sweet lady who tries her hardest to accommodate her students and help them succeed. If you study a few days in advance and don't try to cram you'll do fine in her class. This class is an upper level GE for a reason. She also brought coffee candy to class one day, which was sweet of her.

I took both BIO 111 and BIO 302 with Goschke. I intentionally took her again, as I liked her teaching style. I'm not sure why she has so many bad reviews- she is a sweet lady and honestly neither of these classes are very hard. I am a biology minor, and both of these classes fulfilled minor requirements. Both classes were structured essentially the same. I did really well on her exams by filling out the study guides she gives you and listening in class. She pulls a lot of her questions directly from the study guide, so if you actually fill them out yourself you'll do well. Both of these classes had 2-3 midterms and a final, which all contained multiple choice and free response. I went to her office hours a few times for clarification, and she was extremely helpful despite being swamped. Overall, Grace is a sweet lady who is willing to help and both of her classes were enjoyable and pretty easy.

Goschke is a joke, she puts up power points that have huge chunks of information missing and goes through the lectures too fast for you to type/write down the missing information and seems annoyed if someone asks her to go back. She puts up study guides that take a while to complete and then her exams don't reflect the study guides and you end up studying things that weren't even on the exam. She doesn't really explain things she just reads what's on the slide and goes on to the next one. I wouldn't recommend taking her, especially if you have other difficult classes because this class is going to take up most of your time.

Grace is a super nice person, but not the best lecturer. She goes through slides extremely fast and doesn't explain the subject matter in depth- just reads off her slides. The exams are very difficult and hard to study for. She is willing to help in her office hours though. I found this class to be most difficult so far at Cal Poly! :(

Basically AP Bio all over again but not as hard. 3 midterms and a final with online quizes throughout. If you take her make sure to print out the powerpoint notes ahead of time because she goes pretty fast through the slides. Shes a nice person but managed to confuse the whole class about mitosis even though we were all learning it again for the 10,000 time.

While I agree with my peers that she goes through power points and a lot of information incredibly fast, you HAVE to give her some credit. She is teaching a detailed science based course to NON BIOLOGY majors (And yes, she waters it down quite a bit so non-BIO majors have a chance at passing). That being said, it is still difficult but very doable. She has a crap ton of information to cover and over 100 people in a lecture. She responds super fast to any emails and is very helpful in office hours. Additionally, there was nothing on her tests that are NOT on the study guides. Her study guides are lengthy but if you do them and the practice problems, you'll do just fine on the tests. Also, for the people complaining that she goes too fast through information & slides....just read the book /view her slides BEFORE CLASS. ***Shocker*** No one wants to do this but I swear if you take some notes from the book that follow her power points prior to class, then you can actually just add here and there to your notes while you're in lecture and not scramble to write down everything last minute because you didn't preview the lecture and chapter like she tells you to do. 3 Exams, 1 comprehensive final, Clicker points and 2 small (easily graded) writing assignments.

She is honestly so terrible. Sure, she does provide a study guide but there is absolutely WAY too much information to learn for a test. Not only that, but her final is cumulative. Too much information on her slides, study guides, and overall a very bad professor. She is boring to listen to and she in turn looks bored teaching. Unfortunately, she was the only professor option or else I would have taken anyone else!

There are 3 midterms, one cumulative final, 4-question quizzes due before each class (based on that class' lecture material), a couple assignments, iClicker/class participation and potential extra credit. If you actually pay attention during lecture, you'll do fine. I went into office hours every week and that was really helpful. She hands out 'in class quizzes' (not graded) that contain content similar to what's found on the tests.

Though the actual material of this class fascinated me, and also made sense, I did extremely poorly in the class despite working my ass off. Goschke's tests are dumb hard- it'll be the type of multiple choice that gives answer A and B and then C is "A but not B" and D is "B but not A" and D is both and E is neither on almost every question. With this type of material, it was as if she wanted you to fail. I would always feel so confident in the information going in to the tests and leave feeling like a huge failure. She throws backhanded remarks to you in her office hours, "such as 'oh, you're a psych major? what are you doing taking this class?'" ummm...I'm required to. She doesn't consider that students haven't been studying this stuff for decades like her and makes you feel subordinate for it. I wish I could take this class with a more competent, approachable professor.

If you are a science major, getting a good grade in this class is extremely doable. It is similar to the genetics portion of BIO 161 but watered down. If you are not a science major, definitely expect to study more. Goschke is very sweet but it can be difficult to understand her concepts sometimes. Not a bad class though, totally doable!

I wasn't planning on leaving a review for her but she just gave us a quiz in class to check our understanding and one of the questions was "what contains the genetic code" A. DNA B. mRNA C. protein D. amino acid. Most of the class said A. DNA but she said that was wrong. I'm a nutrition major so I've taken my fair share of bio/chem classes (Gen Chem series, biochemistry, organic chemistry, cell and molecular bio, microbio) so I know my shit. She told us the right answer was B. mRNA and wouldn't hear it from anyone who argued for A. Besides that, she is one of the driest lecturers I have ever taken. Genetics is an interesting subject and she does a disservice to the topic. She isn't clear, and usually I have to rely on what I learned in bio 161 or even AP bio because her lectures are so unclear. Honestly, reading the textbook is more interesting than sitting through her class.

Today I counted how many filler words she used in 10 minutes: “Um:” 80 “Right:” 38 “So:” 58

To the last two reviews above... y'all are weird and/or salty. mRNA is actually what contains the genetic code lol... the GENETIC CODE table IS LITERALLY SEQUENCES OF mRNA. I don't know why so many people have written bad reviews. If you put in the effort and go to her office hours and actually get to know her, she is really cool and super sweet. She is patient enough to sit with you and help you understand concepts you don't get (even outside of her normal office hours). Yes her lectures are generic and simplified and she goes through them fast, but a lot of the times there were exam questions that were straight from her lectures, or something she said during it. In my opinion you have to read the book in order to do okay. A good amount of her questions were also from diagrams/statements from the book. I don't understand why people think her class is boring. Although I am a science major she taught certain concepts that I have never heard of or learned before. When I actually paid attention in class I realized learned a lot. She is really straight up and lays things out clearly in her lectures. This class isn't too bad if you are a science major but it is still challenging. Some of her questions can be tricky and she doesn't explicitly go over, but it makes you think out of the box, and isn't that helpful instead of memorizing a bunch of facts? If you read the book, do the study guides, ask her about the questions you don't understand on the study guide, do the in class quizzes, pay attention, and take good notes you can pass. Don't be swayed by the mixed reviews!

AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!! I had to take this class for my major and avoided it until now and survived but barely. I went into her office hours weekly from day 1 and by the last week she still didn't know my name!!! She doesn't care about her students at all! This is a bio class for BIO MAJORS. Even though theres many different other majors in the class, it is a strict bio class that only bio majors will understand the material. This was the hardest class I've taken at cal poly by far. There are 3 midterms and a cumulative final. The class got an average of a C- on all midterms... There are also 2 quizzes a week online and participation every class and homework assignments. It is A LOT OF WORK! TOO MUCH! I wish you luck. She needs to be fired.

I don’t know if she knows but some people actually have other classes, jobs, extra curriculars and also need to sleep. Not everyone is a geneticist. Reading for one exam 5 full chapters (Cummings), 8 required supplemental readings, 4 chs (Francis) , and 3 chs (polylearn). Exams every 2 weeks, 5 total. That’s all that reading in a span of less than 2 weeks. Quiz due before & 1 during lecture. There is no such thing as partial credit on exams. Posts study guides that are longer than the chapters you have to read. She is so nice that you cant hate her to her face but deep down the resentment will build until you quit Cal Poly and settle working at Starbucks or whatever minimum wage job (or stripping) for the rest of your life. Ask me how I know (ps I’m premed and this class was just wat too excessive. Ocehm and Biochem didn’t have this much work....)

This class was amazing. There are 3 tests and a final, quizzes twice a week on PolyLearn (there's a quizlet), 4 assignments that are NOT time-consuming, and readings in the textbook and a small book that are time-consuming but incredibly helpful. I definitely recommend this class and completing the assigned reading before lecture. The reading would give an overview of the material and the lecture would reinforce the topic and answer any questions you may have. There's a previous evaluation that said Goschke asked for super detailed answers or something, I feel the material and the class was very fair in what it required to do well.
