professor dobson is a very sweet lady. you can tell she really cares about her students and really wants them to learn the material. class is based on three tests-two midterms and a non-cumulative final and a group homework and participation grade. 25 percent each. make sure you get yourself in a good group or you'll end up carrying your team. there are about two fairly involved team homework assignments a week. the exams are fairly difficult but she does allow you to bring a 3 by 5 card to use with is very helpful.

She is a very nice professor who recognizes student difficulties and always tries to help out. She presents the material a bit in class, but most of the learning comes from doing questions. So if you learn by mainly doing practice problems, this will be a good class. Plus, the material is easy and all the tests are very easy. Great class and great professor.

Dobson is a good professor overall. Make sure you get a good group in the very beginning because you do everything with the group for the entire quarter. One thing about Dobson is that she doesn't lecture a ton. For a lot of the time you just work problems out in your groups and then go over them together as a class. One thing to be wary of is the midterms. The first one is super easy, but don't let it set the tone. The second one is not hard per se, but it takes a really long time; it was one of those midterms where the 2 hours is up and everybody is still working. The final is somewhere in between the 1st and 2nd midterm. Also, your grade is mainly just tests. I believe 10% was group work that you turn in, and the other 90% is split up for the 2 midterms and final. Overall not a bad class.

Dobson's class was fair. If you put in the time and study it is easy to get an A. If you get lazy and show up to half the classes, it is still relatively easy to pull off a B+. Just apply yourself if you want an A. The tests are fair and projects, although time consuming, are easy.

Dobson is extremely boring and doesn't teach you anything about accounting. You have to sit through class doing stupid practice problems while hearing her blab on about things you haven't even learned. Everyone says she is the best but that is complete bogus. Her tests are insanely hard and are on things she hasn't even taught. Also she yells a lot!!!!! Take her for marketing, not for Managerial Accounting. DO NOT take her for managerial!!!!!!

Professor Dobson is definitely one of the better professors to take Managerial accounting with in my opinion. She is very enthusiastic about the subject and the class is pretty straightforward. She uses the time in class efficiently and does not try to trick you on the midterms and final, which she allows a note sheet on. The only negative aspect of the class would have to be the Connect homework that she assigns, which I personally did not feel was useful. She also gives you a group project, which I felt was quite beneficial. I would definitely recommend taking Professor Dobson for managerial accounting.

Dobson actually cares about her students which is really refreshing to actually see in a teacher. She genuinely wants you to do well in her class and will help you get there if you want her to. A lot of group work in her class. She is fair though in her tests, theyre hard, dont get me wrong. The class was not a breeze and lecture about accounting can be dry. But im sure having a good professor makes it a bit better. I would recommend Dobson for sure. She gives you candy sometimes and she is a nice lady overall

If you truely want to come away from a class knowing something and at the same time want a chance to get a good grade than this is the teacher. She is very business like and always on top of things. Very amiable professor who tries very hard to make the material understandable. Quizzes are not difficult if you do the work, but the midterm and final are exceptionally difficult. Don't bother understanding concepts for these, because the test only covers graphs and actual calculations. The graphs can be especially frustrating. Participate in class, because this ends up making a difference in grades at the end of the quarter. Very willing to help; take advantage of any extra credit. Get to class on time!!!

I Loved this teacher. she really cared about every student and how they were doing. make sure to read the chapters. If you dont read the tests can be very hard. the average for our first midterm was a %70...so be sure to read! One thing that sucks about this class is the current events (ILJ's) and we had to do 15 one page writeups on them...they are not hard just annoying. Overall i thought the class was really interesting. Mrs. Dobson is a great teacher!

Okay, here's the rundown on Dobson. she's totally fucking cool if you can handle cocky teaching style. she's totally polite, and has a deep investment in each student - she goes out of her way to help you understand the material. the fault with her lies in her testing. she uses the econ pooled quizzes/test questions...and they are often pretty difficult. the homework is wieghed pretty heavy in your grade, so that's nice, just don't miss any assignments. also, DON'T MISS ANY CLASS SESSIONS. in one way or another, missing a class session will screw you - miss a homework assignment turn-in, or receival, or quiz. something happens everyday. so you'll need to be there. no late assignments either. after all that is said and done, you may be kind of scared off, but let me assure you as a complete stranger, it's not that bad. she really knows how to convey the material and she genuinely wants you to learn the stuff. so the odds are really on your side.

Dobson is a very nice lady, but she is a hard teacher. You have to read the book to do good. If you don't read you won't do good. Her hw is hard and her tests are very hard. the class average on the midterm was a 65 and she didnt curve it. Chances are if you read and do all the work and go to class you will get a B. You wont know how you got that B, but because she is fair and nice you will get it. Also she gives extra credit. very helpful.

Her class is full of lame homework, quizzes, tests and projects. She doesn't curve anything, but offers minimal extra credit. I think she is bipolar. She will snap sometimes. I don't think she knows econ well enough to teach it. She is big on current events, but you don't learn the material from spending half the class talking about current events. She keeps attendance. If you are late, you can't turn in homework or take the quiz PLUS she will be a bitch to you in front of the whole class. She makes you talk in class so if you are shy it sucks.

Professor Dobson is probably one of the nicest professors at CalPoly. First of all she is highly passionate about econ, and strives to make sure every student has a good understanding of the concepts before she gives and exam. Now Dobson gives a mild amount of hmwk, usually a packet to complete each week, that she usually gives you until friday to do, and helps you out with anything if you have a question. She also gives a quiz a quiz almost every friday, and announces what will be on it, but they arent that simple so you do have to pay attention. Lastly, her tests are pretty difficult. The class average was only about 65% for the first exam, however the final is much more simple, mostly because you just go over basic concepts you already know. Dont worry to much about the test however, because she offers alot of extra credit, usually either delete a bombed quiz, or add 5% to your test grade.I got a low B on the first test and got As on all the hmwk and Bs on the quizzes and still easily came out with a B. Be sure to participant in her class however, this can affect your grade heavily

I liked Dobson. She was enthusiastic, and you can tell she really cared about each student. You have to go to every class basically, if you don't, then your grade gets knocked pretty bad. SOO HARD! The class is painfully borring and usually falls on a friday. Shes an extremely nice lady...passes out candy an all that bs, but the class is ridiculous. A good part of the class is spent listening to fellow students relate the news to econ topics, make sure to do it cuz the volunteer points add up in the end! And the rest is slides she copies straight from the book, not helpful. I def recommend that u read before class its a big help esp. since she doesnt show much interest in making sure the class understands what shes teaching! HW is very fair, but you're also assigned a paper and 20 current events that are due at the end of the quarter(make sure u dont save them all until the last week because they take forever). There's 2 midterms and a final which are all extremely hard and theres no curves. The most annoying thing is is that she radomly focuses a good portion of the test on one or two things and neglects the rest of that material that she specifically tells you to study. STUDY THE GRAPHS! For me office hours and that free tutoring was inevitable, so be prepared if needed. If you take this class be ready to teach yourself the material and hours upon hours of studying!

Dobson didn't even teach the class. Instead she had the students form into groups and make little presentations on the material everyday while she sat and held the powerpoint slide remote. Answer more than just the question, she wants more than she asks for. Hell just put every related concept for each question, oh, and hurry as time will be your biggest problem if you are not a freaking speedracers on tests. In order to make the class harder she just made the tests longer.....NOT COOL. Sure you get a cheat sheet with everything you want on it but it doesn't help unless your brain works at superspeed. The point system was cool though, three 50 point tests and thats it. The first one is moderate, the second much easier, the third impossibly long with easy content. In summary, shes a nice lady and thats cool, but you will learn more by going to the library and doing the HW than you will in lecture. Mrs. Dobson completely saved my grade. She took over for her husband in the middle of the quarter (thank God!) and was the complete opposite of him. She made herself VERY accessible by giving us all of her phone numbers, including her home number, in case we were stuck on a homework problem. Ms. Dobson was a very nice person, and really did her best to help us understan the material, however she was obviusly nervous in front of the class and that really detracted from her lectures. Her tests were fair, but difficult, and frankly her grading was inconsistent. She spent 5 minutes before one of the tests telling us that if we could answer the question in a few sentences than we should do that, but when I did that she wrote all over my paper "more detail needed." This woman is the nicest bitch you will ever meet. I didn't care for her much. But she presented the material very well. If you wish to succeed in this class you better know your material. The tests are nothing like the homework or case studies, so be careful. Her tests are multiple choice 25 questions, and can be very difficult. I was dreading this class, but Dobson made it manageable. I took it for four hours once a week on Fridays. As most other students agree, she cares more than any other professor you will have. She wants everyone to do well and will go to any length to help students. She even brought in bagels and cookies. Most of her lecture is off of powerpoint and she knows that students don't want to use the equations, and has us use our calculators for everything. As far as the tests go she allows a DOUBLE SIDED sheet of paper for any handwritten notes and examples. This helps, but the problem is the three non-cumulative midterms (including final) are ONLY 25 multiple choice questions. These are similar in some ways to examples she gives you, but most of them give you way mor information than you need and YOU REALLY HAVE TO KNOW WHATS GOING ON. She does put bonus questions on each midterm which are EASY questions from articles she has given you or things she mentioned in class might be a bonus ----This is what saves you and brings your grade up a lot. Overall a great professor who is perfect if you want to get the class out of the way and not get to involved in the complicated aspects of finance.

She is such a wonderful person, but her class is impossible unless you are really good at finance and/or intend to make finance your concentration. Her tests were 25 multiple choice questions that were difficult to complete in the time allowed. Also, the questions usually had 2-3 parts and if you did one little thing wrong she would have the answer to match up with your answer so you would think you were right. To top it all off, there was only partial credit on her homework problems, not on the test, which would have helped me out. She truly means well, but her tests were impossible. They are 25 multiple choice questions which were, most of the time, nothing like the problems or homework she assigned. I think my grade could have been much better if she had only had some sort of partial credit on these questions, because most of the time I would make a small mistake which would cost me the entire question! She gets really excited about finance and ends up going through the material way too quickly to even grasp. She is always available in office hours for help (she even held office hours on Easter Sunday) and is quite helpful when you do go. I think I went to almost every one of her office hours and still didn't do as well as I thought I should have. I've never put so much time into a class and been so disappointed and frustrated.

Sharon was an awesome teacher for 342. I felt like i was in an easy high school math class. The tests are pretty easy if you do your homework. YOu get a cheat sheet and it's multiple choice. She grades for homework so its always good to go to office hours or email her to check if your answers are right. If you get the homework, you'll do fine on the tests. Some people didn't have enough time to finish but it really isn't that hard if you don't think about each problem too much. grades are 1/4 homework, but if you really hate to do homework, you are allowed to partner up with someone. Meaning you can add your name to someone else who did the hw, but make sure you do it eventually. She takes into consideration improvement. So if you bomb the first tests and do well on the rest she'll bump your grade up more then she should....take her, she's a great teacher.

HARD CLASS! Tests were extremely hard and long. Tough to take the class during spring quarter when the weather is so nice. Ms. Dobson offered extra office hours and lets you bring sheet of notes to exams. I found her to be very knowledgeable about finance and how it relates to other business subjects. Lectures were interesting and applicable to real life situations like planning for retirement, buying a car or house, etc.

Tests are long! I went to all her office hours, got full credit on homework assignments and invested way too much time on this class to end up frustrated and with a low grade. If you can't work at a fast pace don't take this teacher.

Professor Sharon Dobson was much of an anomoly to me. I have heard the standard Sharon Dobson quote many times leading up to my enrolling into the class: "Sharon is such a good teacher and cares about her students, but she is really hard, but it is so worth it!" There is some validity to that quote, she does care about here students, but did fail in many areas. Her grading seems to be subjective by the end of the class. Her lectures get drier and drier as the quarter progresses and her tests were challenging. I felt that the lectures did not prepare me for the exams. I relied solely on practice problems from the book; I did them 3-4 times over before each exam. The class calander is dynamic as she changes it every week. Her homework assignments are tedious, but very doable, just takes a large amount of time. I recommend, reading the chapters, bringing the slides to class, and logging many hours at the library to secure atleast a B in the class.

Dobson's test aren't that hard IF you study the material. Read the book, do the HW problems, and understand the concepts. Many people just try to find the answers, then they do badly on the test. If you learn the basic finance concepts you can apply them to the tests. If you are well prepared you will have plenty of time to finish the tests. I do agree that due to time constraints, mostly because Dobson spends the first 20 minutes of class for announcements and current events, she doesn

Though the worksheets and projects seem to be a lot of work, they are very necessary in order to get a good grade. Always go to lecture for the sake of understanding the material. The worksheets help for studying for the midterms and final. She also gives additional problems, which should also be done in order to get an A. Dobson is ALWAYS avaiblable to for questions, just take the intiative to contact her.

I am in love with Dobson. She is the number one homie and is actually the most caring person I have ever met in my life. I have her this quarter for two of my classes and she is inspiring me to do the best I possibly can and I am 90% sure I will end with A's in both the classes Im taking with her--not because they're necessarily easy--but because I want to make her proud. She cares so much that it makes me care and want to do good. I have never written a poly ratings and this is probably the only one I will ever write but to anyone who wants to have a teacher that is so amazing and you will learn so much from and also bonus... HAS 8 CATS!!!! take Professor Dobson, she's truly the best person on the planet. Im actually so sad I won't ever have a class with her again wow

I see that Dobson gets great ratings which is why I took her, unfortunately my experience was not the same. This is the first time she has taught 342, or so i've been told, and maybe that explains it. She didn't do much to narrow down the information, she would explain one or two examples and then expect us to have the ability to do EVERY PROBLEM in the back of the book, which included every trick and twist there was. She would also often times assign lengthy accepi homework on topics we had not yet discussed in class which was beyond frustrating and discouraging to try to understand. I think she is a nice person but her teaching of this class was poorly executed. The midterms are also very difficult and most people do not finish, there are 30 questions and each test is worth 30% of your grade, meaning if you miss 1 question your grade will drop an entire percent. Meanwhile the extensive amount of classwork and homework is only worth 10% of your grade. It seems like Dobson is an exceptional marketing professor and I wish she would stick to that.

Dobson TRULY cares about her students. She's one of those teachers that will give out her own phone number, respond to your emails extremely quick and schedule more office hours if you need help. There is no reason to get a bad grade in this class if you understand the material and keep up with the work. Three tests @ 30% of your grade and attendance/homework is 10%.

I also took Dobson because of the good reviews. She does care about her students tremendously and is readily available for office hours. However she presents the material very fast and does not allow enough time for her extensive midterms that are each worth a third of your grade. Many people would not finish! There are some curveballs thrown and she does NOT give any partial credit, in fact she will take points off though if not all the work is shown, which is fair I guess. The accepi assignments are long but not worth many points at all and the tests are not even based off them...Some hw was due before she would even cover the topic. The amount of work and stress does not outweigh the end result even though I liked her as a person.

Dobson is very committed to students' success, in that she is always available for questions. She loves 6AM SPIN classes, working as a TEAM with her STUDENTS, and her 8 CATS. You will understand why these are capitalized. However, her tests were a little too much for 2 hours. Several (including yours truly) failed, and I believe he average on the first 2 exams was around 72%. I studied my ass off for the final and got a B. Came in to the final with a D- overall, and ended up with a C-. The 3 tests are also 30% each, with 30 questions per test, which means each question you get wrong, your overall grade drops by one percent. I feel this class would be fair if the tests were weighted at 60%, instead of 90%. You end up doing alot of work outside of tests that is merely weighted at 10%. Overall a good class and a good professor, I learned alot despite barely passing. Try to do really well on everything, and don't slack whatsoever. Her tests will bite you in the ass if you choose to.

Fact: She has 8 cats from Hell. Overall, Gorman(Kike 100%)<Dobson(Jewish 90%), getting completely kiked vs. getting a little less jew'd, choose wisely.

Ok I have had Dobson for two class (BUS 342- finance & BUS 346- marketing). She is absolutely amazing - I know her tests for both BUS 342 & BUS 346 were hard but she gives her students all she has. For finance she isn't the easiest professor (go take Bing's class) but she will challenge you enough to understand the material but not like Gorman where you will fail the class. Most students receive a B if they come to class and just do the work - which is really easy and she gives you the answers so dont worry its not that bad. The tests did have some curve balls on it & yes she doesnt give partial credit which is a bummer but as a student who is a crappy test taker I got Bs on all three so dont worry, study a bit before & if you are really lost GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. Now moving on to BUS 346, this is Dobson in her prime ugh she is fantastic at teaching this class!!! Yes its a lot of work but if you ever need anything she will help, its almost like she is on your team as well! So bummed that shes not teaching this class anymore (or she might next year)! For this class the midterm and final were hard because it does cover the book and she never goes over that but what I would do is use the class time she gives (which is a lot) to work on your project with your group and when you are outside of the class really focus on reading & taking notes on the textbook!

Sharon Dobson is a great person and made 8 AM class on mondays doable. She's a tough grader but is super fair and will tell you that from day 1. No, its not Gorman's class but Finance is still a pretty tough class. Make sure to do each of the book questions she assigns for tests. Its also super important to understand exactly how to use a financial calculator so the plug-in questions don't take time away from the ones that are harder. She tends to throw too much information at you to make sure you really know what you're doing. All of this being said, I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on how money grows and learned a ton in this class

Although Dobson's class is difficult and she sometimes struggles to get lessons across to students successfully, she is probably the most caring professor I've had in my time at poly. Dobson is such a great teacher and such a sweet lady. Her lectures are informative and are a good mix of presenting conceptual info and practicing problems. She can be a bit unclear at times, especially when explaining the concepts, but she's always willing to answer questions and clarify. Her grading scale is a bit scary (90% midterms and 10% homework), but study a few hours for the midterms and they should be relatively easy. Plus, she lets you use a cheat sheet and the tests are all formula/calculator/easy conceptual questions, so you really shouldn't be failing them. The homework is just 20-30 online questions that takes like 30 minutes to finish if you know your stuff. To summarize, Dobson is the best! Probably my favorite teacher at OCOB other than McDowell. Plus she invited us all to her house for Thanksgiving this year. How nice is that? If you like finance and want to concentrate in it, take her and it should be easy. If you don't like finance, still take her, because she's easier than Gorman and she's SUPER helpful in office hours.

Dobson is a very nice person and professor overall. She does try to make the class about the students and their interests, as well as current events. I found it a little difficult to learn sometimes because she would have us start working on problems in class without her even doing the lecture for those problems but I guess it is because her highest expectation is that you do very thorough reading beforehand.

Dobson is such an awesome lady! Very approachable and a high-achieving women! This class is kind of pointless- just a lot of number crunching and busy work, but not too difficult. Do all the practice problems and you will be just fine on the tests. However, people always run out of time and I knew multiple people who failed midterms (each one is worth 30% so it really brings your grade down). You just need to put in the work, show up to class and don't waste time during tests.

You can basically expect three noncumulative tests, homework which turns out to be pretty helpful, and deliverables which are not helpful in learning anything but are due like every week. The classes themselves are extremely boring and she doesn't teach it very well to you.. she will go through the powerpoint and then ask you to do problems which you will struggle to do with your group for the majority of the class and then she will go through them quickly assuming everyone knows how to do them and move on. Luckily she gives you practice problems and a note sheet for the tests, or we would all fail. If you are good at teaching yourself then you should be g but if not take someone else

Professor Dobson is one of the coolest teachers I've ever had at Cal Poly. She shares a huge passion for finance and is very approachable and easy to contact if you have trouble understanding something (go to office hours or text/email her!!!). On top of this, provided you pay attention and digest her lecture, the corresponding practice problems correlate quite well with what you are learning at the time. There is an overarching project for the class that is pretty hands-off as long as you meet the timelines and show a little effort. The online homework (Accepi) is an absolute breeze, but DON'T USE IT TO STUDY as the book practice problems she provides as a study guide are much more helpful. Her second midterm is WAAAAY harder than the first one as the concepts are more abstract so don't let it blindside you. Other than that, nothing much more to say. Fun, straightforward lectures, a relatively simple project (@marketing......), 2 midterms and a final all of which have study guides. What more can you ask for?

Class was extremely fast paced. You are required to get into teams at the beginning of the quarter in order to finish assignments. These are long and tedious. When I say that there is a lot of work in this class, I mean it. 535 points worth of assignments only worth 15 percent of your grade. Her tests are ridiculous and at ALL times students do not finish. Everyone seems to struggle and you can tell when 2/3 students you talk to outside of class say they are struggling to even pass. I have no idea what these polyratings are talking about. Professor Dobson is a sweet lady. She truly is- very nice. However, her tests are ridiculously hard. The rest of her work is worth 15% of your grade. She gives you problems to practice prior to a test and you practice them and know them very well. Then, you go in for the test and you have an hour and 50 minutes to do a 33 question test. It is not enough time... You are also expected to show work so if you run out of time and have to guess on a few multiple choice, you will still get these wrong. I had class the same time as her office hours and expressed this to her. When I was falling behind she wasn't very responsive in my attempt to set up extra help outside of class. When we did meet one time she merely let me look at the material and didn't explain much. All in all, you can get good grades in the rest of the classworks and homeworks, and attend every class, but if you don't do well on tests, which have little to no relation with what is gone over in the other realms of the class, you are doomed. It is an unfair class. Don't take her.

The class is fast paced, and often you are covering one chapter in a single day's lecture. However, you can blame that on the quarter system. There are 13-14 chapters to cover in ten weeks, what would you have her do? I have to agree that there isn't enough time on the tests. The problems themselves are pretty much what you should expect, with a couple of really hard ones out of left field, but the second exam in particular does not give you enough time unless you're naturally a whiz with a financial calculator. I got an A, but it was a close call and it wasn't easy. Isn't that why we're at Cal Poly? On the personal side, she is extremely nice, energetic, and responsive.

TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN! Finance is a somewhat difficult class for most students based on how quickly the challenging course material is covered. Even the testing is a jam session - I did not fully complete even one of the 3 exams. Professor Dobson is a genuinely-energetic, passionate teacher that truly puts effort into her lectures. She cares about the students and is committed to her work. Here is how to succeed in her BUS-342 lecture: Do your best to select quality team members, as you will be with relying on them all quarter. Attend every lecture, pay attention, and take notes. Try to group study, meet with free tutors (they can explain things a bit slower), and go to office hours at least a couple times. For testing: get comfortable with the calculator you will use on exams and consider creating custom scratch paper to help show work on exams, as this is allowed and showing work is required (and time-consuming). *The course is CURVED - class participation, extra credit, and group participation can be the difference between passing with a C and retaking the class. A friend of mine may or may not have gotten much lower than a C on all exams and still pulled a C in the class... Keep your head up and stay positive! (15% assignments, 25% exam, 30% exam, 30% final)

If your only options are Gorman or Dobson, choose Dobson. However if you can take someone easier (and aren't super serious about finance), take someone else. This class is hard for most students and requires a lot of work. I have spent 15-20 hours studying for each exam and STILL haven't aced one, and this is my second time taking this course. Dobson moves fast and her tests are hard, however she is a great professor and very very sweet and empathetic. You really need to pay attention and attend every class, as she takes attendance every day in some form and assigns 10-30 points for each class period depending on how she sees fit. Tests are 85% (broken up into 3 midterms) and participation/hw is 15%. One benefit is the final is not cumulative, however the course builds on top of preceding concepts. Accepi is pretty worthless for studying for exams, and the best way to study for them is by doing ALL the book practice problems she assigns. Don't go into this class thinking it will be an easy A.. or easy to pass at all for that matter. This class requires time and devotion and should be taken with a light quarter.

Prof. Dobson is extremely nice and generally cares about her students. However, the class is really difficult. I think that the company analysis should be taken out and focus more on the general concepts of finance. The project seemed like a lot of busy woke and got in the way of studying for the tests. I feel like there is too much material to cover in 10 weeks and I end up having the memorize rather than learn and apply. If Prof. Dobson lightened up on the material and did away with the company analysis I feel like the class would be much more enjoyable and I would actually learn most of the material. She is a great professor and I feel that this class has a lot to offer students it just needs a few key adjustments.

I loved having Professor Dobson. She is clear with her powerpoint and lecture. Her "fiscally fit" problems prepare you for the quizes and exams. I've heard she is easier to take than the other Professor teaching BUS 342. I would suggest taking her if you are not a Finance concentration. I still learned a LOT and loved the class, but I've hear the other professor expects you to put much more time. She is enegetic and very helpful and I would strongly recommend her for any non-Finance concentrations such as myself. If you are a finance concentration, take take the other professor as he is more demanding and you will be forced to have a better Finance foundation because of it. Otherwise, she is excellent!

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Let me just start off by saying if you are reading this, I am sorry because you are in for a horrific 11 weeks. I would rather jump ass first into a dildo factory than take this class again. It seems not too bad at first, first midterm won't seem too impossible; I got a B- on it. I studied at least 30 hours for each exam and knew the material very well, however she makes her tests too long and you don't have time to finish them. You have 2 midterms and a final, which are 85% of your grade and then 15% is showing up to class, completing Accepi homework assignments (don't use these to study for the tests, her questions are like the questions in the book), and a group project that you have portions of due weekly; all of which took lots of time and effort and should have been worth more than 15%. Advice: 1. Do all end of chapter problems to study for the exam 2. Go fast during exams 3. Prepare from your ultimate demise. If i read this review I would probably think to myself something along the lines of "oh this person got a C+ they didn't try hard enough" however just know that trying my absolute hardest gave me my first C so good luck.

Prepare yourself, because you're in for the some of most unnecessarily frustrating 10 weeks of your college career. I have very mixed feelings about Prof. Dobson. Personally she is on of the sweetest most caring professors I have known. However, the fact that she purposely makes her exams so they CANNOT be completed in 2 hours is an enigma to me. I've never had an INTRO course give me so much anxiety. The way the class is structured is most definitely NOT conducive to actually learning the material, memorize and regurgitate is the name of the game for this course. Overall This class is WAY to unnecessarily difficult for an INTRO finance course. I mean if you want students to NOT pursue finance, keep this up, I'm sure she's already crushed a number of peoples dreams. This is in no way an attack on her character, like I mentioned earlier she's a really nice person.

Really nice lady. Warning: She is intense but she truly is a very nice lady. She has like a permanent scowl on her face from how intense she is. I only ever saw her smile twice the whole quarter. Her lectures are very serious and intense. When people have a question and raise their hand, she doesn't respond right away. She first finishes her thoughts and then, 5 minutes later, she calls on the person. But she knows everyone's first name! Amazing. Do NOT be intimidated or afraid. I swear she is an awesome wonderful person and just give her a chance to show that to you. Very understanding and accommodating to help you. Her exams are very difficult and you need every second of every minute of every hour to try to finish them. Even then you will run out of time. Guaranteed. You will have to guess at some. Gotta show your work or no credit. Lots of group work. Pick your own team mates and pick hard workers. This class took over my life from how much work I needed to do for it. You can survive with the power points alone but if you want the book, it's online as a pdf for free. The chapters are 40 pages and all text. Tough reads. You'll need a BA-II plus financial calculator. If you're not a finance major, pick her over Gorman. Unless you want to really really really learn finance thru super hardcore learning and study. He will try to kill you but in the long run it will be good for you and your career. For us non-finance majors, Dobson is savage but you can survive if you stay strong. Fantastic lady.

If your option is between Dobson and Gorman, and you don't want to be a finance concentration, choose Dobson. That said, still don't go into this class expecting it to be easy. I made that mistake and struggled right off the bat. Dobson is a really really nice person and bends over backwards to be accommodating and helpful (lots of office hours, gives out her personal phone number so you can text or call her if need be, encourages students to reach out) and she's very helpful in class overall. This class has a relatively heavy workload (at least at first, it lightens up towards the middle-end of quarter), but the busywork isn't worth a large percentage of your grade so don't waste massive amounts of time doing it. The tests are kind of difficult because time is an issue, but she does allow a one sided formula sheet which helped a ton. Her test material comes from (for the most part) the review problems she assigns, so do those once or twice thoroughly and you should be okay for the tests. The class breakup is about 15% homework/class work, 25% first exam, 30% second exam, 30% final (non cumulative). I'd recommend this class be taken during a lighter quarter and be prepared to put in work, but at the very least a B should be doable.

Finance is hard but Professor Dobson is literally so AWESOME. She is the cutest most intense professor I have ever had but even though her presence is intense you can tell she really cares about her students. She is a very very busy woman however she has really gotten the hang of teaching this class. Material is hard you just need to go to class and be engaged. She is really good at also relating all concentrations to finance (i personally am not a finance concentration but I still found the material interesting). I do recommend getting the financial calculator because the tests you will run out of time and the functions on the calculator allow you to compete problems faster. Accepi problems take forever and are not very helpful for tests (if you are having a hard time just ask for the solution right away because they take so long). I recommend practicing book problems she gives you to study. If you are struggling with the class talk to her, she is a very understanding lady and really wants her students to succeed. She will remember your name very quick as well. I never attended her office hours however within a week or two she remembered my name. She also talks lot about fitness, the opera company she's involved in, and her cats. Its so funny because her voice and presence is so intense but then shell go off about her cats or a more light hearted topic

Overall Dobson was an okay professor. Pros: she was very helpful and willing to help us out as much as we needed outside of class. She gives you her cell number in case your stuck on any hw problems and encourages you to do so. Cons: she always went SO fast teaching the material, we would have to work out the book problems at the end of the chapter with our groups without her explaining how to do them and have to turn them in for credit so it was always so stressful getting it done in time nonetheless not knowing how to do any of it we would have to ask nearby groups on how to do them, the Accepi hw is SO unnecessary and takes SO damn long to finish!! I would spend anywhere from 2-5 hours finishing it cause I had no idea how to do any of the problems but I would usually meet up with people or ask around to see what people got for some problems and sometimes would text Dobson asking for help and she even says it's not useful to study for the tests so I have no idea why it's a thing it wasted so much time >:'( Study ONLY the end of the chapter book problems only for midterms and final! I did that and did very well on all the tests. Also, a lot of people are saying on here that they had no time to finish the tests? I finished 2/3 tests 10-20 min early so idk what some people are talking about. Do keep in mind the 3 tests make up 80% of your grade :( I think 10% was Accepi and the rest participation and in class work or something. Overall, I did retain some info but not as much as I expected. I'm a finance major and know other people who didn't take Gorman and did well or even better in the rest of their finance classes.

Prof. Dobson wasn't the "easier" finance teacher due to the fact that her curriculum changed in the past year. Overall I read the textbook before class and still found myself a little caught off guard with her lectures. She went through stuff pretty quickly as we did go over 14 chapters of Finance in less than 10 weeks. If you are struggling in her class I would suggest getting a tutor or going to her office hours as she has plenty of availabilities throughout the week. There was quite a bit of material to learn and go over and the work load for this class was easily double if not triple the average 4 unit business required course. I recommend hitting the books the first day and DO the back of the book problems, because that's what really helps for the exams, not accepi. Do not think it is going to be a breeze of a class, because if you are behind the first couple weeks, you will definitely be playing catch up the whole quarter. Show up, do the book problems, participate in class, study and don't slack off and don't think this class will be a breeze. Just an FYI the average for my class' first exam was a 69% and the second was close to a 63%. No curve or partial credit on exams so class participation and possibly attending a play is the only extra credit offered.

Well where do I start with her? Lets start with the short list of positives! She is very nice and approachable, that's it! Each class we have lecture and then a fiscally fit problems we do together. On paper it sounds like a great way to teach except she flies through everything and if you have a question well that's too bad it wont get answered. The online homework is a complete joke, it takes forever and is useless for the test. She provides back in the book questions which can help to prepare you for the 3 tests you take throughout the quarter. The tests are multiple choice BUT you must show all your work to get credit. You could get a 90 on MC and then get a grade blew 70 which happened to people I know. I had a similar case but didn't get marked off that much. You most likely wont finish because some of the problems she asks you are difficult and there are about 40 per test. This class requires you to put in a lot of effort and time to understand the material. Looking back on the class I suggest you read the chapter before lecture. Also, at the start of the class you will be asked to follow a publicly traded company in which you are assigned weekly to do some type of analysis with your group... not hard just time consuming. My biggest complaint is the fact the tests are MC yet you have to show all your work and if you don't well kiss your grade good bye.

I thought Dr. Dobson was more than accessible to her students by providing additional office hours during midterms and finals week! She was nice and friendly to her students and really shows her care! I think Dr. Dobson did a fine job teaching the principles of marketing to her students!

Professor Dobson is an excellent professor. Although her exams are quite difficult, she makes the class entertaining. I especially enjoyed the candy that she brought for the class almost regularly. There are homework assignments and reading. She grades homework assignments pretty hard, so you can't slack you way throught them. She has high expectations from her students but she handles the course material fairly well.

Prof. Dobson was awesome. She understood that not all of us were marketing students and that most of us were just taking it because we had to. She was very helpful in class and very nice in her office hours. She totally helped me for our participation portion of our grade when I went to see her during her office hours and she encouraged us to call her at home if we ever needed. Overall a really good prof. I hope her husband is just as good when I have him for finance!!

This course was awful. Dobson is enthusiastic about the subject and has the potential to be a great teacher, but the format needs to change. Homework assignments are very time-consuming and teach nothing. (Sorry, word-processed summaries of 3-page articles are a waste of toner, and new product ideas that are written down and not used for anything are a waste of time). I suspect they were designed to make us keep up with the reading, but between the daily assignments and the tally marks for mandatory comments in class it was like being in junior high again. Tests include trick multiple choice questions and 4 essays that you can't do much to develop in the time allotted, especially when they each consist of about 7 concepts to discuss. Review sheets list every idea in the book, and they're ALL on the test. When are teachers going to learn that it's more effective to pick out a few key concepts for students to remember after the course and emphasize those throughout the quarter than to force feed a bunch of details that we memorize, regurgitate and promptly forget after the tests? That said, she is readily available to help students during extended office hours during test weeks and any time via her home phone number. Dobson is bright enough to handle a discussion analyzing our ideas and input, and that would be much more effective at instilling knowledge than reading from PowerPoint slides at every class meeting. (Hey, some teachers aren't capable of discussion at all so she's already ahead of many professors). Once she relaxes into her abilities the course will be much better.

There are very few teachers at Cal Poly like Sharon Dobson. I was surprised to read some of the other reviews on her, and would like to let people know a little bit more about her class. First of all, her class is not the drill and kill class that people made it out to be. Yes, there is homework, and yes, you have to study for the tests, but this all contributes to something that people don't care too much about anymore; the LEARNING PROCESS. I learned so much fromthis class and will retain most of it. She brought in guest speakers and took us on "field trips" and certainly had wonderful class discussions that was more like an open forum in which she played the moderator. If you want to actually learn the material, take this class. Although the class is not very difficult, don't take it if you are a slacker. Coming to class, participating in discussion, and doing homework are all required, and they are used as learning points. I highly recommend this class to anyone who would like to learn some very interesting things about marketing. Sharon Dobson is an endangered species in my eyes. We would be lucky to have more teachers like her.

I will say that Dobson honestly cares about her students. However, her teaching methods need to be re-evaluated. She basically lectures entirely off of the power point slides provided to her by the book's publisher. This makes lecture entirely boring and completely unnecessary to attend. The catch is she keeps a record of whos been to class, and scores a point next to your name each time you contribute in discussion. There were some highlights throughout the quarter though, just to be fair. We went on a field trip to the dump, and a very entertaining guest speaker came in. My largest complaint, by far, is the HOMEWORK. Welcome back to 5th grade. Please summarize several five page mini articles, do discussing the issues questions 1-5 at the end of the chapter, and mapping the concepts 1-4. She needs to put a little effort into the assignments if shes going to make you turn them in. The minimum length of a hw assignment was 3 pages, typed and single spaced. Several reached 8-10 single spaced pages. Tests are somewhat difficult, in that she covers a very wide range of material. See earlier posts directly below for more on that. She is very willing to help, but I find that marketing is a bit like learning the latin names for animals. You already know what they all are, just not what theyre called in latin. If you put in the time to memorize, there are no real concepts here. Bottom line: If youre stuck, you'll deal with it. If you have a choice, take someone else.

Prof. Dobson is a goos teacher. This isn't a class you can expect to get an easy A, but overall it is worth it. She is extremely caring and anytime she sees you outside of class she loves to stop and talk to you. If you become friends with her, she is willing to go the extra mile for you in any way shape or form. A warning thought, her tests are diffucult in the fact that they are very thorough. You cannot BS your way around a question. You either know the answer or you don't-trust me, she can tell the difference. Homework can be long, but such is college life. This class is a good inftroduction to marketing.

Dobson is a teacher that you will not find very often. She cares about her students more than any other professor I've had at Poly. She supplements the powerpoint presentations with videos and other class discussions about marketing. You also go on a few fieldtrips and have a guest speaker. All of this is very insightfull and helps you understand the subject better. As far as grading goes....make sure to do all the homework assignments and when it comes time to do the tests FOLLOW HER STUDY GUIDLINES and you will be set. Each of the three non cumulative midterms (including final) have about 25 multiple choice questions and then three or four writting questions. The multiple choice is straight forward, but the writting questions require A LOT OF writting, but nothing you can't handle. They are not meant to trick you at all but rather to show you understand the big picture items from the study guide. Overall, a really good professor of marketing and if you participate and follow study guidelines you'll be set.

Sharon Dobson was a pleasure to have as a teacher. Her class was so nice it made me decide to go into the marketing concentration. She is pretty tough the first few weeks but that is to just set a standard. After that things are very cut and dry. As long as you study the study guides exactly for the tests you will do just fine. She was easily accessible and very enthusiastic and lectures were easy to follow. The tests pretty much convered the power point slides that you were also able to get on-line. I liked her class so much that I took her husband's class for finance because I thought he would be the same kind of teacher.

Ok I heard great things about this lady from polyratings, WRONG. She is terrible. Everyone says "oh well she's really helpful in office hours". Great just what I need, a teacher who can teach outside of the classroom. Lot of fucking help that does for someone who can't make it to office hours. She has made me have finance. Her tests are unbelievable. There are 25 multiple choice questions and majority of the class finished 15 of them at the end of the 2 hours. Whatever, if you are an office hour person I guess try her out otherwise skip it.

The workload is hard sometimes but she is really willing to work with you, some of the assignments are fun. Her exams are difficult because she asks many in-depth essay questions (as well as some multiple choice), just make sure you read the green sections in the book (as well as the rest of what's assigned) and review the video cases. If you need help on anything she'll be there for you, you can call her at home if you want as well. One suggestion I can make is read the video cases ahead of time. She started doing pop quizzes near the end because no one was reading them and it took a heavy toll on my grade. She is a sweet, caring woman, the material is not difficult and if you attend class and follow the study guides you'll do fine. You can also go to her with any question imaginable during the group assignments and she'll review your project ahead of time and tell you what corrections to make to ensure you'll get the grade you want. Basically, take her. You won't regret it.

She gives you study guides that basically tell you everything you need to know for the tests! And the group work does take some time but it is sooo easy! Do get a good group though cuz if you go with people you know they are such slackers and you end up doing everything! The tests were soo easy! I don't know what others are complaining about! She's very enthused and so willing to help you with anything. She actually remembers your name and gets to know you and even out of class and after you've taken her course she remembers and is always excited to talk to you. I only looked over powerpoint slides for tests and never read the book and got a B! Even if you don't do well on her tests, just do good on all your group projects and you're guaranteed a B! OK, wow, where to begin. I need to say first of all that I am going to try to be fair and objective, but this is going to be extremely difficult. PROS: Sharon Dobson is smart, dedicated, and a good speaker. She presents the material clearly, and what needs to be done is clear. I have read in numerous other posts about how dedicated she is to her students, and I would venture that this is true in a way. CONS: Her dedication seems to manifest itself as unrealistic expectations on her part. The amount of work was absolutely ridiculous. We literally had 3 group projects (one huge and 2 smaller), 3 quizzes that are really like small midterms, two journals that we were expected to update multiple times a week, individual papers, etc. It seemed like she thought that Cal Poly's "25-35 hours a week" slogan referred to her class only. The grading was very very vague. With all of these different assignments, I have no idea how my grade was calculated and how these assignments were weighted. This is spelled out in the syllabus, but only in general terms. And, with all the things that she had due towards the end of the quarter, I highly doubt that she read every paper completely. It is extremely frustrating to write what you believe to be a professional paper and be given an arbitrary grade. OH, and you can't miss a single lecture or you will be docked 2.5% on your grade. This is in the syllabus. All in all, I don't think that I would repeat this experience. I think the people in this thread that say it's a lot of work but it's worth it are either Marketing majors (I'm not) or masochists (nope). I think anyone who took this class and actually made an honest effort should be given an A in the course. I ended up with a B after working my @$$ off all quarter. Hardest four units EVER, Poly or not. It's not difficult material to understand, but just the sheer volume of the work that she assigns boggles the mind. I cannot recommend this class to anyone at all.

She is a pretty chill teacher on the personal side, easy to talk to, and really tries to help students learn. She gives a good amount of chances for extra credit (to erase bad quiz scores) as well. However, requirements for this class were mile high for a basic marketing class. Although there were no midterms to stress out about, bi-weekly quizzes tested the book material and the hands-on projects took a great deal of time and effort. A bunch of individual projects are listed in the syllabus to be due by the end of the quarter, and those assignments are demanding. Little things like participation and especially perfect attendance will probably help you out to get an A...which will be hard earned. In addition, the group work part can either be a full-force marketing experience or a just-get-it-done thing, and that all depends on the morale of your group--which definitely will not be comprised of all enthusiastic students interested in marketing. In short, good teacher, but harsh class.

This class is a lot of work, but is manageable if you stay on top of things. If you procrastinate, then you will hate yourself at the end of the quarter. The class is heavily based on group work, especially the final project which is most of your grade. Make sure you pick a group with people who don't seem like slackers. There are no midterms or a final, but quizzes almost every week so you have to keep up with the reading. The best piece of advice I can give is to not procrastinate put off the final project until the very end of the quarter. It can be very overwhelming if you wait until the last minute. Dobson is very helpful if you contact her for help though. She usually responds to email within a few hours. If you like group work, take this class.

Mrs. Dobson is VERY passionate about teaching and you can tell she loves marketing. Her class isn't too difficult but if you don't stay on top of your stuff you will be screwed. Most of your grade is based on a group project and you have weekly assignments with your group that pertain to the final project. If you want good grades on the assignments make sure you write a lot!! My group started out recieving poor grades on the assignments at first but once we figured out she likes your responses to be long we started getting As. Make sure you start the final paper early and practice your presentation and you should get a good grade.

Second, Dobson takes time out of her day to help you. She's scheduled appointments where I can meet at her office and discuss grades or the past tests. The only thing is: Her tests are kind of difficult because they encompass so much material (4-5 chapters). Dobsons marketing class... UGH. Let's cut through all of the crap and get to why people read these reviews, is this class a lot of work for an A? YES. The exams are very specific in terms of the points you need to know to do well, and the marketing plan project can take over your life for a solid week at least. This is a 300 level class, fair enough, but it is a lot of work. Sharon is a great lecture, but it was apparent teaching 4 sections of BUS 346 was not a priority. She took forever to grade assignments and let her mentors do all the grunt work. Mentors are amazing though. They truly care and they like to get to know their students, or at least they pretend to! Three words of advice: First, get to know your mentor, they will help you out a TON with the papers that are due weekly; second, the focus of the final presentation should be the WAY you present, less on what you present, practice on being funny, entertaining, and original; third, there are some extra credit opportunities, take advantage of them. Sharon is a very caring person. I was intimidated the first day based on the workload and her tone. The class was one of the best i've taken and if you try hard to get the material down in chapters one and two, you should do fine. There are two tests that require light studying if you come to class and pay attention. She hands out study guides for these so you know exactly what to study. You will be put into a group of four or five people and have to present to the class twice, each time on a new chapter's concepts. There are four or five large projects due the last day of class, but if each person of the group does one, the work load is quite light. If you want to understand how interest rates, inflation, and currency valuation correlate this class will be fun. I took it while also taking econ 337 (money banking and credit) and it helped tie stuff together a lot. This is a great class and sharon is a good, caring instructor. Pay attention the first few weeks to understand the main concepts that the rest of the quarter depend on.
