This class is a strange class because their is no structure. Dills is a very smart guy but sometimes what he says goes right over your head. Every class meeting he will show you about 15 slides then you watch a movie. Make sure you know not only the slide names but info about the artist. He is not good at being very clear about what he is going to test on. His tests tend to be very hard and I do recommend staying and watching the movies even if most of the class leaves... and they will.

Ok...Dr. Dills is, well, a little weird. I don't know where he is most of the time. Let me first say that I dont particularly enjoy art history, so my response is a little biased. Anyway, I thought the guy was funny, but his lectures were really really boring. They didnt have a thing to do with what was on his tests either. His tests come 100% out of the book. But it gets weird. I had a C in the class going into the final. Right before the final, he says "I think Im just going to give all of you A's." Now, there's no way that I got an A on the final, but when grading time came around, I had a A in the course. Everyone else who took that class got an A as well, whether they deserved it or not...hmmm.

Very easy class. You have to go to class because he takes attendance. You watch slides everyday. The test come mostly from the book, and you also have to identify 6-10 slides. You get to write a research paper to replace your lowest test. Professor Dills is kind off weird, but is a very nice guy. If you want an easy class take ART 111

This instructor is the worst teacher i have had in all my career as a student. The title of doctor does not fit him because although he may know a lot about the subject he is teaching, as a professional, he lacks all skill of reflecting this knowledge. He came to class unorganized most of the time and when he set test dates, they were often changed at the last minute. This man tried to fail me for a misunderstanding that he was not willing to hear the other side of. He is irrational and lacks the professionalism that i feel is part of Cal Poly's main attraction.

Beware! This teacher is extremely difficult to understand. He goes through the entire lecture mumbling with his head down.

This professor sucks! He is a compleate idiot that has no business teaching a collegel level course. If this were a major course I would be complaining to the Dean. He had no control over the class and he picked on particular students. He just stood infront of the class and mumbled (seriously), you could barely hear the guy. He annoyingly tried to take role every day, which was stupid and pointless. His tests were a joke, and cheating was rampid. If you can put up with his bullshit for a whole quarter it is an easy A.

Dude, this guy blows. He is boring and he mumbles a lot. Seriously, this guy sounds like an alcoholic when he speaks. I did enjoy a nice hour-long nap each lecture though....

Dr. Dills is a really eccentric guy, but I think he's great. The worst thing about this class was the other students. The class had a ton of people in it, and most of them were rude and didn't want to be there. It was like high school all over again. He has no tolerance for immature students who aren't interested in the class and isn't afraid to show it. He takes attendence and gives away test answers that you would not be able to know unless he told you the answer. So, you'll either have to go to class, or know someone who does. The exams are a serise of slides and you have to know who painted/created them. He gives you a list of which slides to memorize. Knowing the artist is like 95% of the exams. There is a big writing assignment that is worth a large portion of your grade. He must grade it pretty harshly, because I had all A's and one B on my exams, but got a B in the class. I would often talk to him after class about questions I had regarding the art we looked at. He was very nice gave me his perceptions. I'd take him again if I took another art class.

Art 111 is about memorizing art. You will learn very little from lectures and it figures that Dills is old and computer-retarded. He is funny but turns out to be more of a jackass than a comedian. Make sure that if you do take the class, you must go, no matter how boring he is. And trust me he is boring.... people leave periodically and fall asleep. TO learn about the art... better just read the book and memorize all the slides.

This teacher is a complete joke and so is art, the class made me hate art even more then when I started class. Art sucks stay away from this class, and an art major as well. This professor doesn't know how to run a class, reminded me of high school all over again except he cant even grade the tests correctly. So if you are thinking about taking this class dont trust me it sucks. For all you art majors get outside and do something, life is too short to waste on art. ONE FINAL REMINDER STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS!!!!

ok, dr dills, how he even got a phd is beyond me, but this is by far the most confusing teacher you will ever have. i actually did get an "A" and this class is an easy "A" but its also nap time. i rarely went, and when i did, i slept. he is a cenial old man who mumbles out any random thought that goes on inside his head. it is actually very entertaining sometimes just to listen to him talk, he'll blurt out funny commments like "triple shit" and half the time, he cant figure out how to work the projector or computer so he'll let you go. basically this class is easy, teacher is aweful, and cheating is a frenzy.

This guy has no business teaching a college level course, or any course for that matter. Though he is knowledgeable about art history, his ability to convey information is substandard and he wastes more time than he actually lectures. He mumbles, fluctuates the tone of his voice constantly and for no reason, and hasn't a clue about anything technological (which sucks when his lectures depend on powerpoint). His tests border on ridiculous and his final is absolutely absurd (he calls it "an experimental format"). This course has potential but he turned into an absolute waste of time. Avoid Dills if at all possible!!

Prof. Dills was a little odd, however if you pay attention in class and respect him, he is really nice. The material was easy, you memorize artists of paintings that he puts up on the web. Just don't talk in class, he will embarrass the crap out of you for about 10 minutes. I really enjoyed the class and the material.

This is an extremly easy class. the only work i did outside of class was study for tests and i slept most of the time in class. It's really easy to look at other people tests during tests. This guy is way out there but kind of entertaining too. Class usally starts about 10-20 minutes after it's supposed to so don't worry about being on time.

Ok let me just say, Professor Dills is probably one of the weirdest people I have ever met in my entire life. He stands in front of the class and just starts speaking even if the whole class is talking. He mumbles all his words and you cant understand anything he says. You basically sit in class trying to figure him out while he shows you slides of different art. Over half the class would leave early, but then sometimes he would give hints for the tests. If you read the book and go to class its easy to get an A, you just have to be able to put up with his Jeopardy information and how his livestock sometimes escapes. He is funny at times because he doesnt make sense but overall I would not take him again.

This class was really easy. However, Dills is strange. Our first day of class he got through half of the attendance sheet, got tired, and gave us a break. The next hour is tried getting everyone to be quiet, gave up on that, and let us go. He really likes art and wants his students to do well. 4 tests, and he drops the lowest one. Easiest class I have ever taken. Definitly recommend for easy A GE.

Lecture consists of starting 10-20 minutes late due to too many people in the class talking or Dills getting on a tangent. He then lectures on some slides or showing a video until he decides it is time for a break, during which half the class leaves. When class resumes 10 minutes later that it was supposed to, he comments on how many people left, and then gives clues for the next test. Know the slides, glance over the book, know the art from the book, and know the key words. There are five tests including the final, noncumulative. Tests usually consist of a scantron portion to identifying artwork and some fill in the blank and short answer questions. He may randomly throw an essay on one of the tests too. If you're lucky, he may give out a sheet the class period before the test with information to study, specific artwork to know, and whatnot, but you can't depend on him remembering to do that. An 8 page essay can be written to replace a test score. Not a great class, but its an easy GE.

this class was fun just because Dills was a crack up. He's random and mumbles funny stuff. It's even better because it's in a huge lecture hall half the people aren't even paying attention. It's not a very demanding class atmosphere. you just go there, sit and look at slides. there's a test probably every other week, sometimes they're reallly easy and sometimes they're actually kinda hard if you haven't studied in depth for the week. Sometimes it's hard to study in depth because there's a lot to look at before each test. But most of the time the class just helps each other out on the tests, so it's cake. Make friends in that class and it'll be a fun class.

If you're honestly interested in or want to learn about art I recommend you stray away from this class. You look at slides the entire time while listen to Dills ramble on about the absolute most random shit. I'll give it to him tho, it is kind of funny to listen to him ramble as he mumbles about the most awkward topics, but again not the class to take if you whole heartedly love art as I do. I would skip atleast one class in between the exams, and the ones I would go to I'd leave halfway. He attempts to take roll but he doesn't actually pays attention to it. For exams they can be pretty hard as he incorporates things from the text and the slides in class, but it's extremely easy to cheat. You can either get away with looking at other people's exams, talking to the people by you, or even having the book at your feet and flipping through the pages. I warn you, lectures are dull as in the class in general.

AHA! He's gone now anyway... I'm pretty sure he didn't record grades, the final asked us what grade we thought we deserved... and we all got what we wrote. I would do the same for my last quarter of teaching. He was a little crazy too...

the only way you will appreciate this professor is if you have a sense of humor. he mumbles a lot, but he's unknowingly hilarious if you listen. his lectures can be quite boring because it's hard to hear him, and he tends to ramble. but if you have the discipline to go to every class and go over the text, you can easily get an a.

Dr. Dills has a way of presenting art history with a flair. I took several of his classes because I found him very knowledgeable, personable, and witty. His lectures are interesting and his choice of textbooks are very helpful in studying the appropriate era of art history. CAUTION: Art history is not a subject that everyone enjoys (at first). However, Contemporary Art was definitely one of my favorites. We studied Fauvism, Expressionism, Dada, Surrealism, Pop Art, and even some of today's computer-generated art. This class brought to life the bridge between fine art and commercial art through artists like Warhol and Lichtenstein. Also, studying the works of expressionist Willem DeKoonig gave me a true appreciation of his genius and his insight to the human spirit. Dr. Dills discusses the social and technological influences that affect art and architecture. Thank you Dr. Dills for a rewarding learning experience.

Professor Dills has been a joy to take. I've had him for two classes and while in both classes I missed the midterm for different reasons, he was more than willing to let me make them up. His sense of humor is pretty unique and sometimes he's hard to follow along with, but overall, he's quite interesting. For the tests, you will need to know artworks by artist only and it's multiple choice, so way easy. Then he'll ask several fill-in questions and an essay, which is sometimes open-book. Be ready for the essay as much as you can and you'll be fine. He grades on a curve too, so it's easier to get a better grade! Take him, he's great!

I've had him for more than a couple of classes, and I have to say he is one of my favorite lecturers. He's charming and funny and he know's his stuff. He reminds me of Santa Claus. I think he tries to come off as a bumbling old man who's senile, but its all an act. If you read and study the book, watch the movies, and write a serious art essay (meaning you really thought it out and explored the subject, and researched with various resources), you can't go bad. During class, just sit back and enjoy- while taking notes, of course! You must study for the tests- they are difficult to fake through if you didn't read at all.
