Goodman, Anya  

She is a supper sweet teacher and cares about her students alot. If you go to her office hour she will help as much as she can. Lec was a little dry and boring but hey, chem IS dry and boring. Also had her for lab and lab was a lot of fun. she explains all procedures and helps when you need it. exams were really long and tough and came from the book and her practice quizes online from blackboard so make sure you do those. T&F are killers on the exam so make sure you know your stuff. When it came to grading though she wasnt really completely fair. She had different ways of determing the final grade and I think it helped very little. I think I deserved a C but got a D instead and I worked my ass off, but I guess thats how it goes sometimes. Overall she is a good teacher and if I had to do it again (which im choosing not to because "D is for Done") then I would do it with her again.

This was Professor Goodman's first quarter teaching 128; she's normally a Biochem instructor. Anya started off kinda shaky but gained confidence through the quarter. She gives 3 midterms and a final. Your grade on the final will replace your lowest midterm score which is a life-saver! She gives partial credit on the written portion. She also allows you to turn in regrade requests so you can get points back if there was a mistake on the scantron or you found something that counters her answer. If you argue your point well, she'll give the points back. Dr. Goodman is a sweet woman and very helpful in office hours. I would know, I practically lived in there since I struggled with 128. If you show her that you are trying, she'll work with you as much as you need. Her test questions come from the online practice tests and problems from the back of the book. Make sure you do them! I'd definitely recommend Dr. Goodman.

I'd recommend Dr. Goodman as a professor. I had Chem 128 lecture/lab with her, and I enjoyed them immensely. I managed to stay attentive during her lectures because her manner of presenting the material is in no way repetitive or monotonous. The class is very structured, with three midterms and a final. I'd recommend doing the homework because some of the problems are almost identical to those on exams. The class itself is easy and I didn't have to work too hard for an A. Chem 128 was one of my enjoyable freshman classes, due in part to Dr. Goodman's instruction.

Dr. Goodman is not even a Chem phD and she is better than most Chem professors at Cal POly. Her passion is Bio Chem but she teaches 128 so well. She is enthusiastic and excited and knows the material better than anyone. I really enjoyed her class and her tests are definitely doable!

Great professor to have, had her for lecture and lab. She didn\'t use any powerpoints, goes at an easy pace to follow, and spends time to answer questions. Helpful in office hours and she would from time to time make silly comments about random subjects and have some class demos that includes class participation to make the class more enjoyable. Her tests consists of half multiple choice, which mainly focuses on the reading, and a written part, where she provides an equation sheet for every exam. Her tests aren\'t too hard as long as you do the suggested homework and read the chapters. Her final kinda caught me off guard as I thought it would focus more on the last chapter that she taught and spent too much time studying for it instead of the beginning chapters, barely scrapped by with a B. All in all, her class was great to be in , and I would definitely recommended her. Hope this was helpful =].

Teacher was overly concerned with answering stupid questions, wasting time writing questions that she might as well have just posted (cuz nobody was able to keep up with writing or what she was saying, and justify her stupid decision and grading system. One of the worst professors I ever had. I never thought I'd write a review... but there is no sense in punishing tiny little mistakes by giving no credit, ALL OF THE TIME. Nobody learns well when they feel like that are getting dumped on. Overall. Not a hard class to understand the material, (but the way she grades it doesn't take into account whether you know the material or not. I Got straight A's my last two quarters including the intro biology class (which that was a hard class). Not this crap. This a waste of time.

Her grading method is just terrible. Basically what you get on the final is the grade you get on the class. Which makes you think, what were the midterms, lab activities, pre labs, quizzes, homework, etc., for? Overall, she presented the material very well (she is extremely smart, she got her PhD from MIT), but failed to be organized in respect to grading structure. Plus, the website she forces everyone to use called Piazza was very annoying. I did love how she posted the notes online. Heavy Russian accent, but I didn't mind. She is very motherly.

Dr. Goodman got a bad rap this year for having a "hard class", but I found it really easy to succeed in her class. She set up the grading system so that you can make tons of mistakes and still pull through with a good grade. It's really important to make a personal connection with her for "participation points"- go to office hours, speak up in class, etc. She has a great sense of humor and is always very enthusiastic to teach. She has an accent, but it is not hard to understand her at all. I highly recommend taking her for any CHEM classes.

Goodman may be a good teacher for upper level physics classes but for a class like 128 she is terrible. She overloads information during lecture, she is very unorganized, and if you don't understand something she will not go back and help you. For someone who is not good at chemistry and only needed this class as support, she is the worst teacher for you. Take any other teacher if possible.

Goodman was a solid professor. She is incredibly organized and sticks to her syllabus pretty well. All of her lecture notes are always posted on Poly Learn if you missed a day, and she's pretty good about helping you with a concept if you are confused. Also, if you are enrolled in this class, I 110% recommend that you buy the Sapling Learning homework she offers it because it can replace your lowest midterm (my average on it was a 99%, so that was SWEET!) and it is INCREDIBLY helpful. The lab reports are a bit picky at times with some of the things you will get docked for, and her tests do focus on both conceptual ideas and math problems, so be prepared for both. Also, her final is very heavily weighted, so make sure you study! Overall, I would take Goodman again, both for her teaching skills and for her cool accent!

Goodman is a nice and understanding professor, but sometimes her lectures were a bit hard to follow. This is not a good class to take if you do not test well because the exams are very heavily weighted. If you do not do well on labs and homework, but do well on exams then this class may be better suited for you.

Professor Goodman was fairly good at presenting material - although her notes are rather messy, it was mostly understandable. However, her grading policy makes it nearly impossible to do well in this class. I recommend going to her office hours as much as possible and talking to her if you feel that you deserve points back. Occasionally she will give partial credit but it is extremely difficult to do well on her exams. Not the worst professor ever, but I can't say that I highly recommend her either.

Dr.Goodman is an extremely intelligent woman, in fact, she received her PhD from MIT. However, you shouldn't let that fool you because she does not know how to accurately present and explain the knowledge that she has. I believe that she is a brilliant woman, but because her lectures are extremely unorganized along with the fact that she gives barely ANY partial credit, it is almost impossible to succeed in her class. I spent at least twice as much time as most of my peers on her class, and ended up with a C in her class. I wasn't sure if this was my fault, maybe there was a possibility I was doing something wrong. However, as quarters have gone on I've realized that this was all on Anya. I spent only a fraction of time I spent on Anya's class in my later chemistry classes and passed with flying colors (mostly A's). Again, her disorganized nature leaves students so confused and not sure where they should focus their time and energy. Her accent isn't super heavy, but because she mutters and barely uses the microphone in class, it is hard to understand what she is saying. She gives many quizzes, almost every week, however they only make up 10% of your grade and are extremely extremely difficult. Most of the times they include near impossible questions only one lecture after it has been taught, leaving most students even more confused. I will say though that she is helpful in office hours...maybe it has to do with the environment she is teaching i do not know. All I can say is that even though she is a very sweet and brilliant woman, I wouldn't recommend her for Chem 128 (unless you are very good at teaching yourself).

Oh man, where do I start. So I took 308 because as a biochem major it fulfills and upper division elective and an Area F. Of course, now I'm adding on a microbio major as well so it'll actually count as zilch for me in the GE department. Anyways, Goodman set up this class so she can do as little work as possible. She "lectures" for the first 4-5 weeks about very basic biology and she touched a little bit on CRISPR this quarter. Then, all the students do long presentations (~30 min) for the next weeks through week 9 about genetic engineering technology. She sits back and does nothing. Her assignments are unclear and she is so technologically inept. Also, she cannot tell any of her students apart, I swear. I don't think she actually grades the class, she just gives you an overall grade at the end of the quarter. She told our class that she would put in the grades by the end of Thanksgiving break. She never ever put in the grades. After finals, she listed a couple lump-sum categories "participation total, short presentation, long presentation, paper, final exam, overall class score." Never mind all the quizzes and other activities we did. Her final is easy, the class is pretty easy overall. It's also a joke and she is very frustrating. Take your pick.

Though knew, she identifies her teaching style and asks input for next quarter. Really helpful on office hours.

Dr. Goodman is the best professor to take for this class, she is very clear and explains everything important in biochemistry. I\'ve had other professors for this class, who had trouble clarifying certain questions. With Dr. Goodman I was able to learn how everything worked and why. Take her for this class and you\'ll never have to take it again. She is the most amazing Biochemistry professor ever. I am an engineer, so having Biochemistry clearly and thoroughly explained was very helpful.

Great teacher. Extremely nice and helpful, both in the classroom and in lab. Her quizzes and midterms were always straight forward. As long as you study and ask questions in class if you are confused an A should be no problem.

While Dr. Goodman is a very intelligent and funny woman, her ability to lecture and explain concepts clearly is severely lacking. Even though she has taught this course for I think 8 years she said, (correct me if I am wrong), she comes to class disorganized and asks the class what she should go over, as if we have any idea. Her objectives are good to have to study for the tests, but she still will put difficult questions on the test that weren't on the objectives even though she swears she won't put anything not from the objectives. A lot of the questions are very vague on the objectives, lab worksheets and test questions, so it is easy to misinterpret what she is asking. Overall, this class is not hard, you have learned everything already in bio 161, and gen chem series, yet she manages to make even the simplest concept extremely difficult. The lab and OLI quizzes are a waste of time and rarely coincide with what we are learning in lecture. The book is also a waste of money, just check it out form the library every once in a while.

Dr. Goodman is possibly the friendliest and most helpful professor at Cal Poly. Her tests are very fair and straight forward.

Going through chem 313, I think she could be considered one of the worst professors I have ever had the luxury to study under. This is survey class meant to combine topics from biology, gen chem, and ochem. That being said, these are all something that should have been at least touched upon in previous classes. Dr. Goodman somehow has managed to make this class extremely difficult by failing to integrate multiple subjects and creating a concept understandable to students that can be applied to real life situations, especially ideal for biology students. She has successfully lost quizzes, miscopied both tests and lecture notes making a page missing for some students, not even universal to all, and fails to define key topics or to help make the connection between huge concepts from the board to the students. The only time she was utilized her power points were during the lecture her colleagues showed up..how miraculous! Yes, her objectives are helpful in studying for tests, but shedoesn't ask always questions from the objectives ( that were supposedly the only things that would show up on the test) I do not understand how she has managed to make this class so difficult and scattered. If she had supposedly taught this class for so long, how has he not learned how to teach it in a comprehensive way to her students or managed to recognize what is needed in lecture to help make connections or students?

To the senior who posted an evaluation of Goodman on October 21st, YES. Very accurate description. I am sad to say that I will take nothing away from Chem 313 with Goodman. The purpose of a survey class is to understand general concepts and the significance of what you are learning. Goodman failed to address these two very basic objectives. It astounds me that she never connected the course concepts that she was supposedly "teaching" us. Instead of providing us with the overarching theme and relation between the many different systems, she provided us with scatterbrained lectures regarding the insignificant details. Class with Goodman is a waste of money, time and energy at its finest.

This lady is extremely smart and understands the material theres no doubt about that, what her probelm is, that she can not convey the material to the class. She writes the worst notes, she draws biological processes so sloppily and uses abbreviations that we don't know. The second midterm 54% of the class failed the midterm and when asked if she was going to curve it she said "No, I dont give free lunches". There is online homework which is extremely time consuming and this is the only thing that helps with your grade. Overall i would not take her again she is to unorganized and unable to see student difficulties.

In the beginning of her course, i was definitely overwhelmed by the material, it all seemed a bit scattered. However, once you realize her lectures are based directly on the study guides she provides you are golden. I really enjoy her and her teaching style. She does her best to help students. For the second midterm of the quarter some students did so poorly she created a retrofit assignment that helped boost your grade a bit, this allowed me to get 100%! She is very open to you questions and concerns. I would definitely recommend you visit her office hours!!!!! they are extremely helpful, surprisingly there was only bout 8 or so people that i saw regularly at her office. I honestly, think she is one of the top 5 best professors I've had at Cal Poly.

Let me start off by saying Dr. Goodman is such a sweet lady! She really wants all her students to do well but she is big on working hard. The class consists of 2 midterms (you get to drop 1), a final, and participation which is basically one question group quizzes at the end of each class. The lab is 20% of your grade as well and do not expect to leave any earlier than the 3 hours. She makes the lab dreadful, and in my opinion challenging. Dr Goodman is an MIT graduate, so she is really smart. She has trouble understanding that the students are not as smart as she is, so no one gets anything she says in lecture. Her midterms are so hard... I think our class has an average of a D or F on both of them so she has to curve it by like 10%. She also adjusts grades at the end of the quarter depending on what she thinks is a fair grade for you. I don't think she uses any mathematical equation when doing this, but she tries to make the students who work hard get the grade they deserve. I always felt like lecture was pointless, but after studying it on my own time and going to office hours I started to understand the material better. Although Dr. Goodman can be a little disorganized, she is a very approachable lady who genuinely cares about her students' success

Dr. Anya Goodman is amazing. She clearly works very hard to provide clear and straightforward lectures, that double as fun and interesting. She cares so much about her students' wellbeing and that they understand the information. Her stories about growing up in Soviet Russia are so riveting. My favorite is how she would get moss from the forest to insulate the cracks between the logs of her grandparents' cabin. She spends an immense amount of time and effort optimizing office hour times to fit a majority of students, and even includes a "floater" hour to meet the needs of students who can't make any times. Her worksheets and handouts are very helpful in furthering our understanding of topics, and the animations she shares links to and plays in class are really helpful. Her work ethic and compassion stood out the most in relation to struggling students. She reviewed material from general chemistry and BIO 161 for students who hadn't had the classes in a while, or at all. She made sure she reinforced/build a foundation for those students to succeed on before moving forward. Her tests are very straightforward, concept-based. Multiple-choice and short answer. Often, if a test goes badly, she has group quizzes of the question missed most, and students will receive points back. She encourages participation and discussion, and even if a student gets an answer or comment wrong, she helps support them into understanding; she never shames them. Dr. Goodman is a wonderful person and professor, and I feel very lucky to have spent a quarter learning from her.

I was shocked to see such negative reviews on Dr. Goodman! Perhaps several years ago she may have not had it together as much, but I took this class with her in Winter 2016, and it was great! It sounds like she has improved a lot as a professor in a short period of time. She never miscopied anything or forgot to bring things to lecture, she lectured off of very clear slides with note outlines provided, and the tests all seemed extremely fair. I have a great understanding of biochemistry now. In fact, Dr. Goodman made me retroactively understand concepts from ochem that made absolutely no sense at first. She also very much cares about student struggles because a few times she asked us to write down what concepts were confusing us on these note cards and hand them in, and the next lecture she directly addressed exactly what I had written down. It was so helpful! She's one of my favorite professors at poly! Don't let previous years discourage you from taking her because she has fixed a lot of what sounds like people had issues with in the past.

Dr. Goodman is the BEST. She is so incredibly nice and funny, which makes her really helpful in office hours. She genuinely cares about her students, and wants everyone to succeed. She has two midterms, but only counts one of them which is really great. This class is a lot of work, but she will definitely help you along the way if you put in the effort. I would absolutely recommend taking Dr. Goodman, you will definitely not regret it.

Goodman is the kindest human ever. Yeah Biochem sucks, but all Chem and Bio classes suck at Cal Poly and it's just a tough class. She really cares about her students and wants you to do well truly. If you go to her office hours she will be so helpful with any question and walk you through something multiple times until you understand it. She brings her dog to class like once a week and it make it so much better because its so cute. She really respects students as human beings and tells us all the time how smart we are and how proud of us she is. She is really amazing and I can't recommend her enough. There are 4 midterms but she drops your 2 lowest ones so that is clutch too. If you have to take CHEM 313, take it with Goodman, also take her for lab any other lab professor sucks. She is the best!!!!

Anya goodman is one of my favorite professors at cal poly. don’t be mistaken this class is very hard and you have to put a lot of time into learning the material, but AG is such a sweetheart and just wants her students to do well. office hours are super helpful and she brings her dog a lot. if i has the opportunity to take another class with her i 100% would.

One of the best chemistry professors at this school. Her biochem class was dope and she presented everything really well and does all she can to help her students. She makes it practically impossible to fail as long as you do your work and learn something. She teaches you to think on your feet.

She is the most adorable and kind hearted woman ever. Seriously. It took a while for me to warm up to her teaching style (she lacks structure and really pushes thinking out of the box), but she's so helpful when a subject is confusing and her presence is so calming. I thought Biochem was going to give me a lot of stress, but she does literally everything she can to make a tough subject easier. Brace yourself for a lack of grade structure and study whatever she brings up in lecture!

Decent teacher, HORRIBLE grading. Talks about curving all quarter and how certain percentages would be As or Bs, then when it comes down to it she grades on a regular grading scale... Unless you're one of the lucky few she favors and curves you up a few percent- completely unfair.
