All I have to say is unfair! His tests are impossible. You cannot get an A in his course - he will not allow it. In addition, he is so very boring. His voice is monotonous, and he is very wordy in his presentation to the class. I simply did not get along with the guy.

This guy knows stats. He could tell you statistically how to write the word "difficult." Which is what his class is if you don't pay attention. There in lies the difficulty of the class. An epic battle ensues when the powers of sleep crush the walls of attention and storm the castle of your brain. If not armed properly, you WILL fall asleep. However, use his office hours wisely, and thee shall prevail. Be warned that his fire-breathing tests have slew many a brave knight before, but you shall be armed with a sheild of curve. Good luck and Godspeed.

Contrary to what some other students said Dr. Devore is a very fair teacher. He did give at least 3 A's in my class- you have to earn an A in his class he doesn't just hand them out. You do need to go to class regularly and read the course booklet in class while he's lecturing to better understand what he is saying. It is clear he knows statistics very well and sometimes he doesnt do a very good job explaining something but he is very helpful in office hours. I went to office hours almost once a week for questions of just to talk to him so he would know who I was and that I cared about my grade and was trying very hard. In the end I think it paid off.

Devore knows his stuff. He presents the difficult material well, in a way that is easy to understand. While his lectures might be a little boring, can you really expect to get a lecture about stats that isn't boring from anyone? If you go in to see him during his office hours,he is extrememly helpful, and you can tell that he genuinely wants his students to succeed. His homework is on the heavier side. However, the questions from the tests are extremely similar to the homework problems, so if you do the homework, you should be fine. I would recommend this course to anyone.

prof. devore knows his stats! however he has a little trouble presenting it in a way that can be easily grasped by the student. i think this is largely due to the fact that he is just so knowledgeable in the subject. i could have done better in the class had i but a little more effort into the homeworks and oh my biggest advice is dont slack in the beginning...you must work hard the whole way though. overall hes a good prof...hes just hard to approach with problems.

Devore is very educated in his field and knows what he's teaching. Be prepared to take good notes but also to sleep. He speaks slow enough to understand him but also enough to put you right into a nice nap. If you have troubles, don't hesitate to go to his office hours. He's not intimidating and doesn't act superior in any way. He's very kind to his students and is interested in where you are headed in your college carreer. I would recommend him if you are willing to do a little extra work. And don't procrastinate on the homework!!!

Dr. Devore is a good teacher, just a little awkward. He presents the marterial straightfoward enough, it's just that some of the material is pretty tough. he's a really nice guy and wants to get to know his students, which i think is admirable. Go to his office hours.

Dr. Devore is very fair and is very generous with his curve. He is not the best lecturer but is very sincere in wanting to help students and having them do well. He wants to know his students and does his best to remember names which is a lot more than I can say about other professors. His tests are the hardest in the world but if you think you're right or that he graded too harshly you can talk to him. He really wants to get to know his students and oh yeah he uses words that you can barely pronounce during his office hours sometimes.

If you want to be a great statiscian, take this professor. Mr. Devore knows his stuff but he fails to recognize that this is a required course, most students do not want to be there. Statistics is an easy material, however, Mr Devore EXPECTS you to know everything there is to know and we are NOT statiscians!!! His homework and his test are extremely hard. I learned nothing out of his lecture. I learned from my STATS lab. I got b's on my first two test and that was 72/100 and somehow I ended up with a C-. He has to curve the test because they are so hard! I put so much time into this course.....ugh it was not worth it!

Devore is the most pretentious and unprofessional professor I have ever had. Don't show up late to class cause he will whine like a two year old about how your interupting his class time when he doesn't even realize that he is doing that himself by complaining about your tardiness. I fell asleep once in class and he threw a piece of chalk at me to wake me up which is completely immature and uncalled for because it impossible to stay awake through his utterly boring lectures. I took stats in high school and learned far more than i did in this class. He grades unfairly on the tests because he thinks everyone has a PhD in stats and likes to see people fail. Do NOT take this professor.

When I first came to class, I thought this guy was too harsh on his students but I realized he knew how to teach and throw in jokes to keep the class awake. Some of the material he presented was way past my comprehension but the tests seemed to cover all the material that I understood. I went to his office hours and they were helpful to an extent but what made the class was his course booklet..I barely even read out of the text book. All in all, take this class if stats doesnt come easy to you..I know I suck in stats and I pulled off a 'B'

Great teacher! He understood student's questions well and was able to offer an explanation that was very clear. Tests were straight from material presented and partial credit was offered. He was always available in his office hours and other times too. Always willing to spend the time to make sure that you understood the material. Before taking his class, I hated statistics. I thought there was no real point to statistical information, but he was able to present it in a real-world manner. Statistics is still not my favorite subject, but after taking Devore, it certainly is not as terrible as I had previously thought

professor devore is a well prepared, and very well educated statistics teacher. after all he is the department chair. i was told to try and avoid him, but because of a bad priority, i was stuck with him..... Best thing ever though!!! Devore was probabaly my best bet for stats! his lectures are very informative, the homework was graded (22%) of grade, so that forced me to do it all, which then made me master the material. his test were hard and lenghty for the 1 hour time limit, but they covered the material straight from the HW and class and you get a page of notes per test. his curve is brilliant, where else in a 70 a B, and 85 and A!?! use his office hours wisely, and go frequently, he enjoys chattin with students, and will help them out in the long haul. i would definatly recommened devore for stats!

I would definitely recommend Devore to anyone taking 251. He knew the material very well, presented it in a way that most people could understand it, and if they didn't, he is helpful in office hours, and his course booklet was key!! If you go to class, and do the homework, you'll most likely do well on the tests because it's all the same material. His tests are very fair, and you get a sheet of notes for every one, and all three for the final.

Professor Devore is a genious. He is extremely knowledgable when it comes to the material, and all of his examples come from real life situations. His course booklet is extremely helpful. I would recommend Professor Devore to any business major taking 251. It is a difficult subject but he is very thorough, and very approachable during his office hours. Make sure you go to class everyday and do the homework when it is assigned...do not wait until the last minute because he does collect it.

Professor Devore may seem dry at first, but he is the most fair professor I have ever had or heard of. He presents class material in a very logical manner, which is straight out of his course booklet. His tests are also extrememly fair, and you get a sheet of notes for each test, which you keep for the rest of the tests, so you have 4 sheets of notes on the final, which is also extremely straight-forward. If you are looking for a fair teacher who will actually teach you stats, especially in STAT 251, take this professor.

Dr. Devore is well organized, he presents the course material as clearly as possible, and he is very helpful in his office hours. He also expects a lot from his students. There are seven 5 point quizzes throughout the quarter; the best way to get a 5/5 is to spend a few minutes reviewing the notes before class. There are also seven homework assingments worth 20pts; the best way to get 20/20 is to get help in the free stats tutoring that is offered or visit Devore during his OH. The three mid-terms and the final are all challenging. You have to study, do the homework, and prepare a lot if you want to get an A in this class. It's also helpful to get a study partner. Do not take Devore if you want an easy A, but if you want to be well prepared for Stat 252 then he's the man.

Hated the way he taught the class. Not many example problems, just explained concepts and left the rest to you. Lots of homework which is collected and graded. Doesn't offer to answer homework questions in class. Numerous quizes that are easy to rack up some points on, test are relatively difficult but overall the class is not to bad. With minimal effort a passing C or B grade can be earned.

Devore is awesome. For a confusing course he does a great job of presenting the material clearly. Just be sure not to miss a class because not only does he have pop quizzes, but he also covers a lot in each class session. He can be kind of monotonous at times but he livens things up with his sarcastic humor and a corny joke here and there. The class is based on a series of quizzes, one about every week or every other week of which u can drop you lowest score, 3 midterms, weekly collected homework(which u can again drop your lowest score of these), and a cumulative final with more weight on the most recent material. He curves at the very end and....wow... thank goodness for that.

I managed to get a B in this class mainly because I'm good at learning from a book. The book for this class isn't even a very good one and the course booklet while it includes most of the major points and formulas they are not highlighted at all and you really need to take your own good notes or spend a lot of time reading through the booklet to study the material. Devore also gets really upset if you miss class reguarly and assigns lots of random quizzes to make sure you are on top of the material at all times. Also don't plan on beng able to leave in the middle of class cause he will yell at you and try to make you feel stupid. One kid almost got away with it but Devore chased him down the hall as he yelled at him. Overall Devore is smart but not a good teacher. I'd take him over Kent Smith but not any of the other stat instructors.

This professor is a very nice man, but a horrible teacher at best. I found his lectures very hard to pay attention to, no matter how hard I tried. Often, I found it more interesting to count the number of people sleeping in class than listen to his voice. Furthermore he talks at you, instead of working with you, and making sure you understand the information. Most people with ok grades have already taken stats in high school, and are still having trouble. His tests are impossible, and account for 85% of your grade. He spends no time reviewing, and instead moves on for three days before the test, leaving you to struggle to remember what u learned last week as well as trying to keep up with the current homework. I would not recommend this teacher to anybody. Every minute in that class feels like a painful hour.

CLASS: based on three midterms, final, and homework is collected about once every week or week and a half PROS: he knows the material well, class is very predictable, doesn't take role, responds quickly to email, big curve, has practice problems for the midterms and finals, get note sheet for eveyr midterm and final CONS: very difficult class, midterms and final seem impossible, homework is very difficult RECOMMENDATION: take SI class (helps a lot!), do all the homework, if you dont' mind working hard and want to learn a lot then take this professor, otherwise try a different one

This teacher is unbeleivably brilliant, but can't teach. He knows his stuff, but it is so hard to follow him in class. He likes to sound all smart with always relating to what a 'statistician' would do. The homework is a lot and you better do it cause that is what boosts the grade. So this guy really knows about stats. What you get out of his class really depends on what you put in. If you're willing to put forth the effort and work hard then you'll most likely learn a lot. He assigns homework nightly and then collects it every 1-2 weeks, but if you wait until the last minute to do it then you will be pretty much guaranteed to fall behind and not know what the heck is going on. 3 midterms and cumlative final, all are bearable if you've done all your homework, paid attention, and looked at his example problems. Pretty generous curve. Lectures can be a little boring, but what math class isn't? He's not always the most approachable but he can be helpful in office hours if you've looked at the problems and are stumped. Basically Devore is a good teacher, but he's hardcore. If you really want to learn about stats and be prepared for 252 take him, but if you just plan to slack off then he may not be for you.

If you go into office hours he's not helpful and gets frustrated with you and treats you like you're retarded. The tests are too long for the 50 minute class and are tough to finish in time. His curve is extremely low.. a 55% is a C which means that the students are not understanding the material which is a reflection of him and his poor teaching skills. I've never heard of a curve that low for a Stat 251 class. He has this set in the beginning because half the class would fail if he didn't. Devore isn't really a great teacher. I thought his lectures were confusing because he packs in as much information as possible in those 50 minutes (we never got out early). He can be an asshole in office hours because if you don't go in there kind of knowing what you're talking about he'll make you feel like an idiot because he asks the same question over and over and doesn't care if you say you don't know. On the other hand, there were times he was very nice and helpful in office hours..I guess it just depends on his mood. His midterms are very difficult and his final was okay. You have barely enough time for the midterms though. Huge curve in the class..like a 70% was a B. Overall a mediocre teacher. If you can, try to get someone else..

Devore knows his stuff. He has a course booklet that is very organized and helps for the two midterms and final. He allows one cheat sheet for the first midterm, then two cheat sheets for the second midterm, and three cheat sheets for the final. He has weekly assignments that take barely any time whatsoever. Devore is kind of tough, but he knows he is tough. He curves like no other. I didn't care too much about this class, so I did alright, but a high B is easily attainable with no stress if you don't think it is an easy class from right away. You will need to do some work. Devore is the worst teacher that I have ever had, ever. All the comments below me are little vignettes of how bad he his that you will experience if you take him. I only signed up for the class because his was the only one available. I heard bad reviews but I wasn\'t sure how true they were, now I know. Its true that he always says how easy it would be with statistical software, Minitab, but we never use it. His monotonous voice you can not pay attention to at all aside from his twitches. He is very intimidating during office hours and asks why you didn\'t check the solutions on blackboard before coming in and says that its a waste for him going over it again. He doesn\'t offer any form of help, the people at the supplemental workshop can\'t help you. Devore feels that they are not qualified to teach stats so does not give them any insight to help you. So basically, he presents the material in class, you don\'t know whats going on, you ask others for help but they are just as lost as you are, and you are banking on the curve to help you out and eat the kids who were previously bad at math. Also, at the end of the year he doesn\'t give you a course evaluation sheet like all other teachers do. Is it because we would all give him a terrible rating? or does his age/tenure prevent him from receiving one. He is ex-chair for a reason.

All the homeworks are like take home quizzes that you are bound to fail. I have NEVER gotten full credit on homework, it asks you on things that have nothing to do with what was said in class. The supplemental workshop people can\'t help you and Devore wont tell them anything about the lesson plan. Don\'t worry, theres someone in the class whos struggling a little more than you are. Thank god for the curve. avoid this class

Seriously, he\'s not that bad. Don\'t let polyratings scare you out of this class. If you aren\'t completely incompetent when it comes to math you should do well and the curve is crazy and he even makes it more generous if you have tried hard on your homework and show up to class.

very very hard class. I thought that I could do it, and disregard the comments left before me. WRONG. This class was so ridiculous. I liked Devore a lot but I just couldn\'t do his class, unfortunately. He is retiring though, so no one will ever take him at Poly again.

This was quite possibly the worst STAT professor in the history of professors. Trying to stay farthest away from hearsay, this man is a horrible teacher, who has no idea what he is doing. first day of class: slaps you in the face with a 700 page manual of DRY instructions, comparable to a manual explaining how to assemble a motor home from nuts and bolts. This guys monotonous tone made the class no easier. I had no idea what was going on the entire quarter, and he was of no help. He would assign homework BEFORE the lecture, and would GRADE HARSHLY on any errors you made. So when I had no clue what was going on, I had to turn in a paper with my name on it just so he could give me a 0/5 every morning. He also wrote me some nasty emails when I asked for help on an assignment. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Study his supplemental material! He's a good, fair teacher. Not too animated in front of the class. Very helpful in office hours and interested in each student individually.

Worst prof I had at Cal Poly. He was very cold and kinda bitchy to students. He didn't give a single A in my class, so you know what kind of guy he is.

The major emphasis for taking this professor is CONFERENCE HOURS! Expect to his office hours frequently or learn the stuff on your own. His lectures tend to be very in depth with alot of terminology. Its like he has a language of his own, but he is a very fair teacher. Show that you are trying your best, and he'll treat you with respect and mercy.

Devore has written many books he knows the stuff but isn't the best at explaining it. His tests are extremly hard and too long, I never finished one. I never got above a 68 on the test but the homework helped and he curved alot. I feel as hard as he was I was better prepared for STAT 252. He isn't as bad as others say but you have to be willing to work and go to office hours and you will do fine.

Although he takes some getting used to, Devore is an excellent instructor. It can be intimidating, given that he is the Department Head and the author of the 321-322 textbook. However, he presents things clearly and even has supplementary material to go with it. His humor is dry at times, but still entertaining. Perhaps if he only learned to type out some of his notes instead of handwriting them...

Teaching style/content was bearable, but teacher's attitude sucks. He belittles people and is extremely arrogant and full of himself. He also has an annoying facial twitch that distracts from his lectures.

The biggest problem I had with this class was the textbook and course booklet were written by the teacher, so all three sources I had for information on the material came from the same person. This meant that if I had difficulty with a subject it was almost impossible to find help for. There is a reasonable amount of homework and two fairly difficult midterms which I suggest you study for using the sample midterms in the back of his booklet. Overall he is a decent teacher, but not one I would reccomend for this class.

Devore is an OK professor... I think he gives a lot of work for a support class though. And his personality really bugs me. Anyway, if you're going to take him, be prepared to spend a little bit more time than i did on the class...ie more than 5 hrs/week or so.

I don't have him as a professor but I'm forced to use his Stats 321 book. His book is crap and full of garbage! I spent hours trying to figure a problem because I though my answer was wrong, but in reality his solution is wrong(both in the answer portion of the book and in the answer key). For example Problem number 5 in chapter 7.1 part D.... You would figure that this moron would fix all the the errors in the the text book, after all this is the 5th edition.

SERIOUSLY, let me break this down. If you are a student looking for a prof. who is going to stimulate you and keep you interested in the course lectures with his overwhelming zeal, then this is not the prof. for you. It is true he is dry. BUT, the fact that you are paying hundreds of dollars to take this course should be enough motivation to put forth a serious effort. If you are a dilligent student who pays attention in class, takes good notes, goes to office hours, and studies for tests then Dr. Devore will be a GREAT teacher for you. He has a great understanding of the material, presents it very clealy in lecture, and tests straight forward. So a good student should have no problem getting an "A".

5th week of the quarter, just got first midterm back. Weekly homework out of the book which he wrote. Lecture out of the course book which he wrote. Knows stats really well, uses good examples. Although I think he conveys the material well, he won't/can't rephrase the material differently if you don't understand, tells you thats the best he can do and leaves it up to you. Calls out everyone for being late which is distracting. Called out one person for texting quietly in the back of class. Hope it pays off later this quarter because its annoying and distracting for others. Hard grader, good curve. Will take off points for spelling his name wrong on the front of the blue book for exams. TL;DR: Good teacher, kind of stuck up - not too bad.

Devore is old and weird, but not a bad teacher. I don't think he deserves such low ratings. I thought he was just an alright guy until three fourths of the way through the quarter I pop an email to the entire STAT 321 class asking what we did in class the day before and he shoots an email back denouncing my use of such an email distribution list and threatening to contact the "appropriate campus authorities" because of my "breach of privacy"... yea right. Anyways, probably the worst thing about Devore is how little time you have to complete the midterms ... our section was only an hour long and everybody always ended up staying until the end. Not really his fault, but he could make the exams just a touch shorter. His final was pretty long too, and because it was worth EXACTLY twice as much as a midterm we were given EXACTLY twice as much time... what a joke. Just give us the whole three hours you weedy fuck.

Don't let the fact that he's the department head, and the author of the book scare you. He presents his material very clearly and chooses his words very carefully, and KNOWS HIS STUFF!

Dr. Devore is a really good teacher. While he does have problems, at least he is someone you can really learn stats from. Business majors may not think highly of him, but majors and minors do. His lectures are no nonsense and he knows what he is talking about. He can put people to sleep, but that depends on how highly you think of the subject. After all, stat courses drive business majors insane. His tests are not too difficult if you do the homework with care, but they are awfully long. The worst part of the class are the projects where you are required to look through a research journal to find suitable data for a certain subject. Those projects are more trouble than they are worth since it is like looking for a sewing needle in the haystack. Grades are curved so that an 85 is the cutoff for an A and 70 for a B. His course booklet is hard to read because it is handwritten, so it may or may not be useful. Office hours are useful IF you know what you are trying to do. But overall, he is a great teacher to take if you are serious about learning stats. Devore is great for stat majors and minors, but not fit for teaching those business majors. After all, his article on the Mustang Daily is to warn people to use Polyratings as only a guide. He should just stick to teaching stats and not make such derogatory comments about this system, but you must consider your position as well.

Dr. Devore is an excellent lecturer who obviously has a lot of experience in the subject and knows how to explain it in a way that is easy to understand. He is well organized and answers questions well in class, and his tests are fair. I will be the first to admit that all this was quite a surprise, as I had read plenty of the textbook in 321 and was scared stiff of actually taking a class from this guy! Apparently, quite a few others were as well, since the class was surprisingly small. While the book is formidable and not a very good learning aid, I can assure you that the author isn't the same. He has a habit of using Latin phrases and other odd stuff in his lectures from time to time, but it's easy to get used to. The most important things are to come to class and do homework. If you do both, the tests shouldn't have serious surprises. Coming to class is also necessary because it's very difficult to learn the material from the text alone. Also, homework counts to your grade, so it's in your best interest. You are allowed a full page of notes (both sides) on each exam, cumulative. Take advantage of this- full advantage.

Devore is an incredibly intelligent instructor. He has a very good grasp on the material and in general does an ok job of lecturing...his examples are fairly good and he stays organized. When it comes to social situations though, Devore is a horses ass. If you ask a question in class that he thinks is even remotely a dumb question, he won't out and out tell you that you are stupid...but will certainly make you feel like it. He really likes to give his opinion on different subjects and in general is a pompous, arrogant jerk. If you did less than great on an exam, expect to see comments like "I liked your last test score better" or "Hope you do better on the final" written on your tests.

This was the first time he taught this class and I thought he was a veteran in it with how prepared he was. Damn hard class though, and tests just as well. Let me put it this way - the smarter you are the better off you will be if you take this guy. I did great on the first test, got below average on the second test and could have sworn I failed the final, but pulled off a B+, therefore I think he gives a lot of attention to how you do on homework.

Devore is excellent. He is highly intelligent and cares that you do well and that you come out ahead in this class within his power. His style of lecturing may not suit everybody as his lectures tend to be very technical, but he will make sure that your lingering questions will not be left unanswered. His class may seem very difficult, but they really help you learn.

friendly, cares about student learning, asks for questions or if people need further clarification often. if you're willing to put in the work (evidently a big if for some) , there's certainly a lot to take away from his courses.
